Housing:
-Ferris Mansion
607 W Maple St
Rawlins, WY 82301
county: Carbon
region: Southeast
-Public description:
The George Ferris Mansion and carriage house are excellent examples of the popular Victorian
architectural style known as Queen Anne. The design of the building came from a well-known
architectural firm, Barber and Klutz, located in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Ferris House is a locally
prominent landmark which derives its significance from two principal areas: commerce and architecture.
The historical significance of the building lies with its association with George Ferris, one of Wyoming's
more prominent businessmen. He gained statewide political prominence as a member of the House in
the 1873 and 1875 Territorial Legislative Assemblies and as a delegate to the Wyoming Constitutional
Convention from Carbon County. By the time ground was broken in 1899 for his house overlooking
Rawlins, Ferris had acquired sole ownership of the Ferris-Haggarty mine in the Grand Encampment
copper mining district and was at the zenith of his financial success. Designed by an architect nationally
known for opulent houses, this small mansion was intended to represent the family's ascension into the
ranks of the state's wealthy elite. Ferris, however, was killed near his mine the following year, and it was
left up to his widow Julia to complete the building three years later. Architecturally, the house is an
excellent example of Queen Anne residential design. Completed in 1903, nearly two decades after its
architectural peers in Cheyenne and Laramie, the Ferris House is perhaps the last of the great Victorian
mansions built in Wyoming. (Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office)

Ranches:
-Buck Brannaman Ranch
Sheridan, WY 82801
county: Sheridan
region: Northeast
-Public description:
Buck Brannaman is the original "Horse Whisper." He travels the country teaching horse owners how to
train their horses and holds clinics on his ranch, as well. Bucks ranch is interfaced with both a horse and
cattle operation. Buck keeps 10 to 15 horses on his ranch and actively breeds the mares (around 10 colts
per year.) Three of the colts then travel with him on the clinic circuit. The horse barn and corrals are
near the house, while the cattle operation is based out of his partner's ranch, which is several miles
away. The horses are kept outside all winter, with the horse barn used mainly for colting and doctoring
(also dry storage.) The relationship between the barn and the corrals is between the barn and the round
pen. A side door from one of the horse’s stalls leads into the round pen. The round pen then opens into
the larger arena beyond. Buck operates his ranch almost entirely on horseback, without farm machinery.
Because of this, he has gates which can be opened from horseback, special footholds in the pen fences,
and other details which facilitate this style of ranching.
Usage restriction:
Year round with owner’s permission.

-Sunrise
Guernsey, WY
county: Platte
region: Southeast
-Public description:
As it stands now, Sunrise is perfect for shooting your horror film or period piece. The property boasts
beautiful, abandoned brick buildings, homes, landscapes, a YMCA (complete with auditorium, activity
rooms, and beat up bowling alley), and ruins of what was formerly the worlds longest garage. Once a
model mining town in the early to mid 1900's, Sunrise was forced to close in 1980 when the price of iron
was too low to sustain the mine. Buildings were knocked down and nature was allowed to take over.
The richness of the iron and excavation in years past have shaped Sunrise’s landscape into what it is
today - a blend of forested areas, rocky terrain, and sweeping valleys, all bright with color. Sunrise is
located one mile east of Hartville, Wyoming (home of the state’s oldest bar) and six miles north of
Guernsey, Wyoming, the small railroad town home to Wyoming’s Army Reserve.

Cheyenne, located at the north end of the Front Range, enjoys a “best of both worlds” atmosphere with
the benefits of both Colorado’s growth and Wyoming’s slower pace. Clean air, little traffic congestion,
relatively low crime, affordable housing, low taxes and cost of living, good schools, recreational and
cultural activities, and quality health care make Cheyenne a good community in which to live. A number
of organizations work to build Cheyenne as an economic and cultural center for the area. The city
maintains the comforts of a low population with friendly people and driving times less than twenty
minutes to any location in town. Its cultural opportunities are abundant, though, with concerts,
symphonies, theatrical performances, and other events occurring each day. Cheyenne is a comfortable
alternative to metropolitan living. Cheyenne has more than 600 acres of parks, plus 15 miles of the
Cheyenne Greenway, offer plenty of places to play or relax. Cheyenne has 14 baseball fields, nine
softball fields, 12 tennis courts, five golf courses and two municipal swimming pools. Cheyenne is the
gateway to Wyoming.

Western Towns:
-Broken Wheel Ranch/Ghost Town
130 West Dimwoody Lane
Dubois, WY
county: Fremont
region: Northwest
-Public description:
This 34-acre property is located 18 miles east of Dubois, Wyoming and just short of a two-hour drive to
Jackson Hole. Surrounded by beautiful unspoiled views of the Wind River Indian Reservation and
mountains, there is only one small cabin visible from certain angles to interrupt the eye. The rest of the
land is protected by the Reservation and is completely undisturbed. To the south you can see the Wind
River Mountains and to the north the Absaroka Mountain Range and Owl Creek Mountain Range. The
source of Dinwoody Creek, which runs adjacent to the property, is a glacier high in the mountains and so
water levels vary according to the time of year and irrigation needs of the ranchers further along the
line. One extraordinary feature of this site is the marshland that opens up just above the ranch house
which turns a brilliant emerald green in early summer. The water is highest in late spring and early
summer and by fall and winter it has dropped considerably. Snow can be expected at any given moment
from September through June although a significant accumulation is rare. Aside from the main house
there is a contemporary ghost town that was built by the previous owner. The harsh weather has aged
the structures considerably and one could easily be fooled by only a casual glance. Recent renovations
have been completed to insure its continued survival and safety. The town includes a Livery Stable,
Saloon, Bank, Hotel, General Store, Jail and a separate detached Church where many local residents
have been married (often holding their receptions in the Saloon). All kinds of wildlife pass through this
spot –eagles, swans, geese, herons, sand hill cranes, coyotes, rabbits, prairie dogs, free range cattle,
antelope and trout.

The Museum of Flight and Aerial Firefighting is located in Greybull, Wyoming. Greybull, located at the
base of the Big Horn Mountains, and the surrounding area have long been magnets for lovers of beauty
and adventure. The scenery varies greatly from high mountain vistas to painted deserts. The Museum of
Flight and Aerial Firefighting was founded in 1987 and incorporated in 1992. The purposes for starting
the Museum are numerous but the major reason is to preserve a part of history that other aviation
museums do not. There have been many types of aircraft used to combat forest fires since the late
1920's and many different designs for fire retardant drop systems. The Museum of Flight is dedicated to
educating people about the numerous types of aircraft and retardant systems that have evolved over
the years into the awesome aerial firefighting capabilities used today.
Site condition:
The museum has been closed for a few years now since the last caretaker died. However, several of the
aircraft are still out there.
