Sanilac Building Ties is a community non-profit agency established in 1987 to improve the availability and utilization of health services for the elderly through cooperative interagency action in local communities. Today, approximately 32 area healthcare, home care, hospice and medical supply agencies work together to enhance the shared responsibilities and coordination of senior services and events. Deckerville Community Hospital, along with informational booths and free senior health services saw 751 area seniors enjoy Tai Chi Exercises with Sandra Martin, RN and a Craft Workshop with the Human Development Commission. The informative Presentations included Advanced Directives, Planning Ahead; Senior Scams, Protect Yourself; and It’s the Law, Your Right to Choose were very well attended and received. Another FREE Fun Filled Day in Sanilac County for Families Saturday June 27th, Deckerville Community Hospital, alongside other area community organizations participated in the Sandusky Thumb Festival Kids Day. Undaunted by the gray skies during the Kids Day event over 200 children and their parents enjoyed the many carnival games provided by Countryside Free Methodist Church of Sandusky, learned about neighborhood safety while riding kid size tractors provided by the Sanilac Sheriff's Department, jumped and giggled in the 4 giant inflatables, and were infatuated by the games and giveaways offered by the area human service agencies. Parents and care providers were given information about services and programs available to them and their wee ones. Many Sandusky High School National Honor Society students volunteered all day to help kids navigate the inflatables. Everyone was entertained by Oehrlein's Dancers, Lesley Durik demonstrated mad hula skills and shared her hulas with the crowd and Misty Waun Roberts got kids dancing to her Zumba steps. The Sandusky Fire Department provided kids hands on experience with the fire truck hoses. McDonalds provided cases of healthy apples slices free to everyone, Justin Faber loaned his snow cone machine and the Sandusky Chamber of Commerce handed out refreshments all day long. The Sanilac Great Start Collaborative wishes to thank all those who helped assure that the families had fun, received valuable information and walked away feeling good about all the physical activity they were able to enjoy with their children. Through collaboration and connected partnerships good things can and do happen.
