Much of the work I do is concerned with the human spirit. In this painting the girl is a wild redhead
Graham Knuttel
clutching a cat to her heart in a gesture of defiance she wishes to appear aloof and in command.

Graham Knuttel was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1954, of German and English parentage.
Among his mother's family were several noted architects and artists including
Thomas Cooper Gotch who co-founded the Newlyn School of Painting.
He mentions also his great uncle, Archie Leach, better known as Cary Grant.
His father's family roots are cloaked in secrecy and Knuttel considers himself to be Irish
or more specifically, a Dubliner.
Initially renowned for his large wooden mechanical animated sculptures, Knuttel has more
recently emerged as a painter with a rapidly growing international reputation represented
in many important collections in Europe and the USA as well as many public collections
worldwide.
Some of his collectors include Sylvester Stallone, Eddie Jordan, Christy Moore, Colin Farrell,
Michael Stipe, Bill Gates, Joanna Lumley, to name but a few.
He is a prolific worker spending up to 15 hours in his studio every day. He works from first light
until darkness and beyond. His paintings represent the human predicament as he has seen it:
his figures appear in an urban landscape and he tries to use colour and form to express the
emotion of his figures.

Re d S ky at Night
I like sheep. They are sturdy animals but vulnerable. In this painting they find themselves in the corner of
an Irish field waiting for night to fall. The dry stone wall protects these soft white animals from the
dangers waiting in the landscape beyond.

Th e Hur r ica ne Hotel
I passed a sign in a remote part of Southern Spain one night,it read ‘Hotel Hurricano’. I imagined in this painting,
what might possibly be going on in there. I painted a scene of stormy passions and seas lit by the moon. I used
colour to give a sense of drama and the shelves at the front show a hidden dimension. I never went there in the end.

Fish
Fish and the sea are a recurring theme in my work. I paint them to relax and enjoy their world which is ever
changing and colourful. It gives me an opportunity to use pattern and light in a restful yet lively fashion.
I have used the fish motif in many works in bronze, wood, textiles and other media.

This Image depicts that creature of legend, the ‘Siren’. Feared by every sailor, she exists to lure them to the
rocks with her melancholy music.
