This 1.9 km long viaduct forms the start of the Hofplein line route, a 28.5 kilometre railway line linking Rotterdam with The Hague and Scheveningen. As a technical inovation the hofplein viaduct was the first elevated railway that consisted only out of reinforced concrete. The former hofplein station including café loos was a starting point for travellers from all over the netherlands to discover the city. After beeing destroyed during ww II and the rebuilding in 1956 the station building was demolished in 1990 for a railway tunnel. In 2010 the station was finally shut down. The task was to revitalize the hofbogen area into a site that provides office and housing as well as culture, youth services and education and to find a proper way to establish the hofplein as a linking point between the fast growing southern part of the city and the suburbian north. Our first step was to stretch the hofplein area to the pompenburg street to use the left over space next to the railway tunnel. This urban takes over the functions of a connector between suburbia and downtown rotterdam in terms of accessability and communal living. The hofplein was transformed into an urban cell and lifted up to the maximum volume given by the housing program of 36000 m2. This maximum volume was gridded respecting the proportions of the stock building and will be used as a static rythm to be able to react on external influences. These external influences such as light, noise situation and accessability defined the location of each item of the housing agenda. Retail as well as education facilities need a direct connection to public spaces so they are placed on the lower levels. Due to the sun movement and working habits of the inhabitants the western side will be used as a housing area, having the light of the apartments situated when the inhabitants spend their time at home. Offices with a high demand on similar floorplans and a subordinated connection to public spaces will form a tower in the north where the casted shadow doesnât influence the neighbourhood in a negative way. Furthermore the nothern tower completes the newly established axes of the hofplein sights. Parking facilities will be located next to the railway tunnel and can be entered from the pompenburg. The new area in front of the hofplein building will take over the grid of the facade but transfers it into a larger scale in the south and a smaller scale in the north regarding the scale of the urban development of each parts of the city. housing program education/youthÊcenter 3000m parkingÊ 6500m office 13000m detailed floorplan_1:50 art/Êculture 3000m entrance scheme hostel/Êappartment 14000m retail/Êgastronomy 3000m housing program classesÊ0-3ÊyearsÊ2ÊxÊ100m 200m Siteplan 1:5000 indoorÊsportÊutilities 400m classesÊ3-12ÊyearsÊ2ÊxÊ150m 300m staff/Êmanagement 100m education kitchenÊ350m supplyÊ/ÊdisposalÊ50m technicalÊsupplyÊ50m managementÊ100m loungeÊ2ÊxÊ100m hospitalityÊ250m standardÊroomÊ50ÊxÊ40m hostel retailÊ6ÊxÊ50m Ê-Ê200m 775m restaurantÊ8ÊxÊ100m Ê-Ê300m 1250m clubÊ2ÊxÊ100m Ê-Ê500m 600m barÊ3ÊxÊ50m Ê-Ê200m 375m retail/ gastronomy parkingÊlotsÊ(bycicle)Ê300ÊxÊ1m 300m parkingÊlotsÊ(car)Ê230ÊxÊ13m Ê+ÊtrafficÊspace 6200m parking conferenceÊroomÊ4ÊxÊ120m 500m auxiliaryÊareas 3603m north workplaceÊ(419)Ê 6494m technicalÊfacilities 4399m east south west office library 3000m culture familyÊappartmentÊ30ÊxÊ100m 3000m singleÊflatÊ145ÊxÊ55Êm 8000m +57,20 15 +57,20 15 +52,20 14 +52,20 14 +47,20 13 +47,20 13 +44,00 12 +44,00 12 +40,80 11 +40,80 11 +37,60 10 +37,60 10 +34,40 9 +34,40 9 +31,20 8 +31,20 8 +28,00 7 +28,00 7 +24,80 6 +24,80 6 +21,60 5 +21,60 5 +18,40 4 +18,40 4 +15,20 3 +15,20 3 +12,00 2 +12,00 2 +6,00 1 +6,00 1 ±0,00 0 ±0,00 0 housing
