Letters to the Editor....
Dear Editor
Recently, as I was driving up the Hospital Road, I saw a sad site
of a bloody, squashed adult hedgehog at the turn off to Atlantic
Lodge. Last Spring I saw the same thing near the Pobalscoil.
Knowing they are mammals and thinking the victim of the
roadkill might be a female my heart went out to the young that
might be starving now in their nest.
Having removed the poor thing off the tarmac, I thought to contact
Kenmare News to ask all locals to Brake for the Hedgehogs! Not
only are they very cute but they also do great job in pest control
for in our gardens. We are very lucky to have them in our town,
as in many areas they are long gone.
Hedgehogs are nocturnal... they think it is safe to cross the road at
night so please pay attention if you see a little brown ball on the
road... BRAKE, WAIT...and let pass.
Thank You!

Pobalscoil Transition Years run to say thank you
The Transition year class of Pobalscoil
Inbhear Scéine visited St. Joseph’s
nursing home and sang and played
games for the residents as part of their
project for the Kerry Diocese Youth
Celebration Day (Ceiliúradh Na nÓg)
which was held in the Brandon hotel in
Tralee on March 10th 2011.
The transition years felt that after the
fantastic welcome they got at St. Joseph’s they
should repay the residents and staff in any way
possible and they decided to participate in the
Race Day
Killarney Lion’s club 10k run as a way of
raising funds to buy buns, cakes and flowers
for the residents of St. Joseph’s. The entry fee
for this run was in aid of Kerry Charities
(Kerry Hospice and Kerry Life Education —
The Harold Project) which the students paid to
enter themselves.
The class began to train during Easter in
preparation for the race which was held on
May 22nd. The Class trained hard and it really
stood to them as they all excelled on the day. To
raise money for St. Joseph’s the transition
years held a stall at break time and lunchtime in
the school during the preceding week. Students
could place €1 on whether they expected the
transition years or a teacher to finish first with
the prize being €20 phone credit. When it
reached the day of the race conditions were
clear and it was impressive to see how high up
the field the transition years were finishing.
Our race between students and teachers
finished with John Hayes (TY student) first in
a time of 41:53. The week after the race the
transition years bought buns, flowers and cakes
for the residents of St. Joseph’s nursing home
using the money they had raised.

reports...
Kenmare Hospital Will Go Ahead
Because of the legally binding agreement nogotiated and put in place by myself and
Glenbeigh Construction with the HSE prior to the Budget in December of last year,
Kenmare Hospital is going to be included in the Capital Plan and will go ahead.
Glenbeigh Construction aim to be on site and begin construction in July. It will be a 70
week building programme and will see the project built by Autumn 2012. As you are all
aware, this project was in doubt over the last few months. Indeed, the Kerryman ran the
Headline saying that the Hospital may be put off until 2014. However, these worries can
now be put to rest, as an official in the Department has informed me that as a result of
the legally binding agreement which I helped to negotiate between Glenbeigh
Construction and the HSE that funding for the construction will continue until
completion of the project.
When talking to Glenbeigh Construction this this week they said that from talking to
other construction companies that only those projects that the HSE were legally tied into
through similar agreements would proceed, and that they are certain that had we not
secured the legally binding agreement between Glenbeigh Construction and the HSE that
the Kenmare Hospital project would not have made the Building Plan for the
Department of Health.
I wish to praise the efforts of Una O’Neill, Michael Harrington, Richard Doran, Mary
Fitsgerald, Maeve O’Sullivan, Mairéad Doyle, Bertie McSwiney, and all the Doctors in
the area and the many others who have supported this campaign over the years. Their
commitment over 36 years has ensured that we will get our new hospital. Their
campaign started in 1975 when I was only 2 and I am glad that I am able to play my part
as a Public Representative to ensure that the hospital proceeds on this occasion.
Minister for Transport called upon to ensure installation in Valentia of €5m Worth
of Coast Guard Equipment which is currently lying unused in storage in Dublin
I have called upon the Leader of the Seanad to bring in the Minister for Transport,
Tourism and Sport, Deputy Varadkar to address the shocking, yet persistent waste of
lifesaving coast guard equipment and money. Nearly €5 million worth of equipment
which was purchased by the Coast Guard service less than two years ago is still sitting in
boxes at the coast guard facility in Blanchardstown.
This communication equipment is used to coordinate the rescue of people in need of
coast guard assistance on land and sea. It should have been installed in the Coast
Guard’s Marine Rescue Coordination centres in Valentia and Malin. The current
equipment in both Valentia and Malin centres is dangerously obsolete. In 2007 the

manufactures of it, Motorola, issued what is termed in the industry as Death Certificate
which stated that “the equipment is liable to catastrophic failure at any moment.”
Despite being aware of the current equipment’s certainty of failure at any time the Coast
Guard has failed in its responsibilities. It is hard to understand why an organisation
given the duty for protecting lives is knowingly putting them at risk. Over the June Bank
Holiday Weekend alone, Valentia Coast Guard responded to over 50 incidents.
Equipment failure would indeed have catastrophic, yet entirely avoidable consequences.
It has recently come to my attention that the warranty has now run out on the
communications equipment in storage in Blanchardstown and it is my information that
the coast guard service is paying 1000s of euro every month to the manufacturers to
maintain a warranty on idle equipment.
Moreover, should this situation persist any longer, the equipment currently in storage
could itself be out of date before it is installed.
I am calling on the Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar to address this matter without
any further delay.
Government urged to Support Legislation on Mobile Phone Labelling
I have called on the Government to immediately announce that it will support legislation
presented to the last Seanad which would bring about labelling for mobile phones to
inform users, especially those under 16, of the risks posed by prolonged use.
Lloyd's insurance of London has refused to indemnify mobile phone companies from
claims related to health issues caused by mobile phones. A working group of 31
scientists from 14 countries said a review of all the available scientific evidence
suggested mobile phone use should be classified as "possibly carcinogenic."
The World Health Organisation have finally come forward in the past week and
announced that mobile phones possibly cause cancer. I believe that the Government
should ensure that the public is made aware of this and pass legislation to put warnings
on mobile phones.
The WHO has now put mobile phone use in the same cancer risk category as lead,
chloroform and coffee. While I fully support the WHO view that more detailed research
is needed on this issue I believe Ireland can take a world lead on this issue by ensuring
the public is aware of the developments in this area.
This is about applying a 'precautionary principal' advocated by the European
Environmental Agency EEA in relation to mobile phones use by children. I urge the
Government to adopt this practical proposal to warn the public about a potentially
serious health problem. It is better to be proactive rather than reactive.
In the last Seanad I, along with Senators Niall Ó Brolchain and Mark Dearey, published
Mobile Phone Labelling Legislation to make Ireland the first country in the World to
enact Legislation to warn of the dangers of mobile phones, particularly where children
are involved. This week I got the Legislation republished and will continue to push the
Government to give it their support.

Notes...
With
John O’Hare
Most people have heard of the Snowy River and the Snowy
Mountains but mistakenly believe them to be in the USA.
Actually they are in Australia, south of the capital Canberra, and are
famous for their trout fishing and, believe it or not, skiing in the
winter. A lot of the area is in Kosciuszko National Park called after a
Polish engineer / adventurer who explored and surveyed this part of
Australia in the nineteenth century. Just after the second world war a
huge feat of engineering was started, tunnels were bored through the
Snowy Mountains and several dams were built to form big lakes on
the Snowy River. The two biggest being Eucumbeon and Jindabyne.
All this construction work was for water storage, the water being
pumped through the tunnels in the mountains to irrigate the desert on
the far side, this has been a great success and has opened up millions
of acres of land for agricultural use. As you would guess men from
every country worked on this huge project. Enemies; English,
Germans and Italians all together including, naturally, the Irish. A
goodly number who stayed and settled and raised families in and
around the town of Jindabyne. As a matter of interest Colm Clinton,
who went to school with me, was Parish Priest in Jindabyne for a
number of years and John O’Shea, also a product of Kenmare Boys
National School, was a lecturer in Canberra not too far way, We are
like ecoli, we get everywhere!
However my story is about the year 1999. I was fishing in the world
fly fishing championships which were being held in the
aforementioned Lakes Eucumbeon and Jindabyne and the
Murrumbidgee Rover, sometime I will get around to tell you more
about the event but at a later date. 1999 was also the Golden Jubilee
and Grand Reunion of workers on the Snowy project. What this
meant was that the town of Jindabyne was a hive of activity all
through the year but was starting to quieten when we anglers arrived.
The local Irish Association took our angling team under their wings

and could not be faulted for their hospitality. One night they put on a
big party and presented us with gold medals, produced for the Snowy
Golden Reunion as mementos of our visit, what a sing song we had
and sick heads the next day (I mentioned to someone that my
favourite drink was Jameson Crested Ten and none was to be had in
Jindabyne. He came to the party with a case of it!) On examining my
gold medal in the light of day I discovered inscribed in the back was
‘Tug of war.’ Checking with the lads their medals were the same.
Obviously the tug of war never took place and we got them instead!
We are unique in being the first, and possible the last, Irish fly team to
fish in the world championship and come home with gold medals for
a tug of war! People ask ‘how the hell did you win a tug of war? You
are too light to be on the team.’ I tell them that I was the person with
a white handkerchief egging them on to pull harder. But now you
know the truth. I am still proud of my medal though.
A customer from the Glengarriff area was in the other day getting
some fishing tackle and was telling me that mackerel were as
scarce as hens teeth at the moment. He said that himself and a
companion were fishing around the harbour in their boat all day with
no success. As you know that area is home to a multitude of seals and
one seal in particular kept following their boat around, and now and
then lifting itself up in the water to have a good look at them.
Eventually it came up to the boat and, rising up, studied both of them
and the boats interior keenly. Then it dived deep into the water,
coming up with a mackerel in its mouth which it tossed high in the
air, catching and swallowing it on the way down. Then, with a look
that said, ‘The fish are there but you two can’t fecking catch them,’
the seal was gone off to join his friends or to find better fishermen.
Fishing in general is starting to improve, the brown and rainbow
trout catches have been quite good, the salmon fishing is not up to its
usual quality but you would be hopeful of better numbers similar to
last year late in the season. The sea trout though have show a
remarkable improvement in Waterville with a new Irish specimen
record of 131/2lb landed by one angler who I have been told caught
one of 11 lbs the next day which he sportingly released back into the
lake. These were all caught on a Bibio Fly. Dick, our editor, on
Tuesday June 7th visited the lake and in dire conditions (high winds
and heavy rain) was lucky enough to boat a nice one of 31/2lbs.
The sea fishing is also coming good with reasonable catches of
mackerel and pollock plus other mixed species. Also the closed
season of bass finishes on June 15th so, no more excuses, get fishing!

At our last meeting we spent a
very pleasant and interesting
couple of hours in Christine's
company listening to her words of
wisdom about organic gardening.
She took us around the garden and
tunnel at the AEC showing us the
benefits of using nettle and
comfrey sprays and feeds,
seaweed and green manure. There
were plenty of maturing crops
proving the point of good
husbandry. She also told us how
we could best utilise the later
months of the year for growing
most crops some of which like
salads could be harvested early
and how overwintered crops
benefit from the early start over
spring-planted ones thus
prolonging homegrown
production.
This was the Garden Club's last
meeting until the 1st September.
However, there will be the trip to
Derrynane and Glanleam gardens
which had to be postponed last
year due to the weather. This will
take place on Sunday, 10th July bus leaving Kenmare 9am and
Sneem 9.30am and anyone who
has not already signed up should

assistance for people on low incomes to access further and
higher education. You may apply for a means-tested
maintenance grant if you are planning to take an approved
full-time third level course or a Post Leaving Certi cate or a
course leading to a Higher Certi cate or Ordinary Bachelor
degree in an Institute of Technology. Previously, there were
4 different schemes but the Department plans to run a
single uni ed scheme of maintenance grants in 2011.
The maintenance grant is paid in instalments throughout
the academic year. If you have quali ed for a maintenance
grant, you will not have to pay tuition fees or the student
contribution. Depending on your family’s income, you may
qualify for a full grant or a partial grant.
There are two different grant rates – adjacent and nonadjacent. You must live 45 km or more away from college
to qualify for the non-adjacent rate. There is also a special
extra grant for disadvantaged students which tops up the
ordinary grant.
You should apply for a maintenance grant as soon as the
application process is open. Do not wait until you get an
offer of a place or enrol in college. Grants are currently
administered by Vocational Educational Committees
(VECs) and local authorities. Guidance notes published
with the application form will give details of where and how
you should apply.
You can read more about maintenance grants by visiting
student nance.ie. This site will also give you information on
other forms of student support such as scholarships.
Your parents can continue to get an increase for a quali ed
child with their social welfare claim and this will last until
you are 22 if you stay in full-time education and your
parents remain on long-term payment.

Kenmare means business
Kenmare Adult Education Centre is currently
launching a new programme aimed at those who
want to get back into the workplace, to go on to
Higher Education or to set up their own businesses.
A full FETAC Level 5 Business Studies Certificate is a direct
route to a Degree course and covers 8 topics including business
law, entrepreneurship, psychology, spreadsheets, bookkeeping,
presentations and work experience. It takes place over 4
mornings per week from September 2011 to May 2012. Contact
the Centre for an information pack, closing date for applications
1st July.
A group of students from Kenmare Adult Education Centre
officially launched several new businesses last Friday by
showcasing their new ventures at the Centre.
The group who have been meeting regularly since January
and completing a FETAC Business Skills course under Kerry
Education Service are led by tutor Alison Winfield. Alison
said: “The range of businesses is wide and reflects both the
times we are living in and where we are live. Several people are
planning small scale food businesses, offering party catering,
and growing organic vegetables. Others are involved in craft
businesses, making handmade christening gowns, traditional
wooden kitchen stools and exclusive knitwear.”
One member, Cathy Teahan of Dragonfly Crafts based in
Kilgarvan, was featured on a recent edition of RTE’s
Nationwide programme with her range of gifts for the home.
People may already have spotted Eva Grafstrom with her
traditional homemade ice cream stand at local events and we
can look forward to Shirley Pryce’s new venture kicking off
later in the year – an experienced fitness instructor, she hopes
to bring her fitness classes into the Mart in Kenmare.

Summer arrives at Kenmare Beauty & Wellness
So what has been
happening at Kenmare
Beauty & Wellness since it
opened in April this year?
The girls, Linda and Celine
have created three
gorgeous rooms on the top
floor above Jam cafe, and
they have managed to
combine a bright and airy
atmosphere with a very
different loft style setting
lending itself to peace and
tranquillity.
Clients always mention how
peaceful it is there and have
also commented that the very
affordable prices have meant
that they can add on even more
treats especially with the
pampering specials. So well
done girls, you’re off to a good
start.
Having reduced prices has not
meant compromising on the
quality. For example a really
firm and deep massage starts
from €25 for half hour with
Linda paying particular
attention in resolving troubled
knotty and painful areas that
develop from stress, overuse
and bad posture. These trigger
points are an incredibly
common cause of chronic
muscle pain and often a course
of 3 to 4 sessions will resolve
Mety Zantigh
the problem, however with
weak spots caused from
unavoidable situations such as
work and home life a regular
visit will help keep the muscles
stretched and toned. The
ultimate stress buster for only
€55 is a 90 minute treatment
that really does what it says on
the tin, busts all that stress by
using a stretching and clearing
technique on the back,
shoulders, neck and head totally
realigning the body and making
you feel really centred.
Another favourite is the antiageing facials and acne
treatment facials. Using
essential oils to suit individual
needs these facials are very
uplifting and a targeted massage
is performed to tone the face
muscles leaving skin looking
and feeling clean, fresh and
much firmer.

Then things to
cheer you up -
do try this at home!
As a Colour and Style Consultant and Life Coach I support my
clients in living their best life.
Life can be challenging and we all need a boost sometimes When
bad things happen, as they will, it’s helpful to have an arsenal of
useful interventions to raise your spirits and improve your attitude.
Here are a few tried and tested ways (by me!) to get some joy
back into your lives when things aren’t going as you‘d like them to.
Mety Zanti ng h
Dance! Put on your favourite music, turn it up loud and dance! This is guaranteed to make you feel good. If you
are unable to dance, don’t let that stop you having fun - sing at the top of your voice instead.
Smile! Force yourself to smile even if you don’t feel like it. This tricks your brain into thinking that you are
happy.
Spend time with children. Their natural zest for life is infectious. As well as the pleasures of a spontaneous
hug or a chubby little hand in yours, try to take away with you some of their joy in simple things.
Reward yourself. If there is task that you hate to do don’t keep putting it off so that it is constantly
bothering you. Just get it done. Then reward yourself with whatever you love, a shiny new magazine, a bunch
of flowers, a long soak in an aromatic bath, a bar of chocolate or an evening in front of the tv doing absolutely
nothing. Or even all of the above if you can afford it. The peace of mind that comes from having got the job
done will be the greatest reward of all.
Clear out your clutter. The ancient art of Feng Shui believes that getting rid of clutter rids your home or
work space of negative stuck energy and allows space for positive energy to surge into all aspects of your life.
Whether you believe in this or not it is an undeniable fact that clearing out what you no longer want or need
makes life easier. Your home is neater, looks more spacious and is easier to clean. There can also be a
tremendous feeling of freedom as you let go of the past and trust in the future to bring you what you will
need.
Take action. If something is worrying you, be it a health problem, debt or a relationship problem- make that
doctor’s appointment, get some debt counselling, go for professional help. The reality is often less stressful
than sitting alone worrying about it.
Wear bright colours. There are certain colours that can just make you feel alive and energized, red is one
them. If you are feeling blue- don’t wear blue. Choose red for example, it’s bright, colorful, playful and it’s
also very sexy and alluring
Paint or accessorize a room that you spend a lot of time in a lovely bright yellow. The colour of sunshine will
lift your spirits and bring positive vibrations. We subconciously know about the effects of colour on our
emotions which is why we talk about the future looking rosy or having the blues
Take the happiness option. You have the choice whether to spend this day, which you will never live through
again, in a state of happiness or unhappiness. Choose to spend it as happily as you possibly can.
Last but not least don’t hesitate to look for support. In times of stress and anxiety, sharing your
feelings with a supportive person helps to lift your spirits. The act of verbalizing what you’re thinking and
feeling is often enough to help you get past initial negative feelings.
If you would like to talk to me about how I might be able to help you please contact me for a free
consultation at

Clever Kenmare students
bring home bronze
The Kenmare Under 14 Community Games quiz team
represented Kerry at the National finals on Saturday the
28th of May and won a bronze medal.
The team was Grace Meagher (Kenmare), Daragh O’Siochru
(Tuosist), Marguerite Riordan (Kilgarvan), Joey Quinn (Blackwater),
and Sandra O’Sullivan (Kilgarvan).
Each team member put in a lot of work over the last 3 months
studying various different topics. The team met 10 times since the
start of March and special thanks goes to The Brooklane Hotel for the
use of their facilities.
There were 25 teams representing their various counties and the
quiz involved 16 rounds of 10 questions. There was a round on
photographs, puzzle / maths round, voice recognition round and
music round. There was one question on community games rules for
all the various competitions in community games in each round (16
in total). Then you had 12 rounds of general knowledge questions.
It was a nailbiting finish for the Kenmare team. Galway won the gold
with a score of 151/160 and Sligo took the silver with a score of
149/160. The Kenmare Team finished with a score of 147/160, level
with Longford. There was a tie break round of 5 questions. Both
teams answered all questions correctly. There was a sudden death
question and again both teams answered correctly. There was a
second sudden death question “How many States in the USA begin
with the word New”? Both Teams had 30 seconds to come up with
the answer with Kenmare answering correctly.

Cllr Patrick
ConnorScarteen’s report
Kenmare Hospital. I have met with Health Minister James O’Reilly and emphasised the importance of the new Kenmare Community Hospital going ahead to construction. Brendan Griffin TD has also been very proactive in relation to progressing
the hospital to construction; he has made numerous representations to the
Department and met with the Minister in relation to it. Great progress has been made
in terms of planning permission, contractors being appointed etc however no money
was ever “ring fenced “ for the project at any stage. No announcement has been
made in relation to the Hospital and I believe it is not until early July that such projects in the capital plan will be reviewed. We will keep the pressure up, Brendan
Griffin TD is to meet again shortly with the Minister.
Water Schemes update.
Tuosist Water Scheme. (140 houses, 8km of pipes and a new treatment
plant/reservoirs) These are 100% grant aided upgrade works, including the planned
provision of a new treatment plant and reservoir and the replacement of 8km of
pipes, prior to take over by the Council. The pipe laying and road restoration have
been completed. The electrical supply, chlorine pumps, a chlorine alarm and analyser
have been installed. The provision of a reservoir, chlorination house and an access
road has been completed. Funding has been received and the new treatment plant is
to be provided in 2011. Tenders received in late may are currently being accessed.
Rossdohan Water Scheme. (70 houses): the group has applied for take over by the
Council. The chlorination system has also been upgraded and further minor works
on improving the controls on the disinfection process have been completed in
February 2011. The administrative and legal process associated with the take over by
KCC is ongoing.
Bonane Water Scheme. (140 houses): these major upgrade works on the existing
scheme, which is to remain private, are complete. The instillation of a further back
up and Chlorine pump and chlorine alarm is now complete. The scheme is supplied
from an upland stream.
Killarney road Footpath. I have submitted a further motion in relation to extending
the footpath to Ard Bhearna Estate on the Killarney road; the Council reply was that
they propose to continue the footpath on the N71 National Secondary Road in the
fourth quarter of this year.
Wall near Morley’s Bridge, Kilgarvan. The wall on the Kilgarvan side of Morley’s
bridge has now been repaired after being knocked a few months ago. I am glad to
have ensured it was repaired in the interests of safety of passing motorists.
15th August Fair, Kenmare. The following was the reply to my notice of motion at
the meeting on 3rd June “as the 15th august falls on a Monday this year, we are
expecting that traders will attempt to move in during the weekend leading up to the
fair day. It is Kerry County Councils intention to provide additional staff to monitor
Kenmare News
the situation during the lead up to the fair and to deal with each situation as it arises.
Any offenders will be dealt with through the parking bye laws and the roads act
1993. the support of the Gardai in enforcing this legislation will also be requested”
The Chamber of Commerce, Local Gardai and Kerry County Council will be cooperating to ensure that as little disruption as possible is caused to local businesses
and residents in Kenmare on the run up to and during the 15th August.
Bring Banks at the creamery car park. More collections will take place and the
Environment services department will wash down the recycling containers and the
general area within the next two weeks. The Environmental services Department in
conjunction with the Kenmare Roads Office are preparing a design and estimate for
an upgrade of the facility. This upgrade would be dependent on acquiring the necessary funding.
Kenmare Waster Transfer Station. I recently asked for an update in relation to
recycling facilities, Kerry County Council stated in their reply that they will accept
the following list of materials from both domestic and commercial sources,- cardboard, scrap metals, steel & aluminium cans, lead acid batteries, textiles, however in
relation to Kenmare Transfer station, we are currently not in a position to cater for
commercial cardboard, we expect to rectify this in the near future”
Sheen River: An Bord Pleanala decision. The Boards decision on the proposal to
extract water from the Sheen to supplement the Kenmare water supply has been
delayed and a decision is not due until 15th July.
Kilgarvan to Loo Bridge Road. Surfacing Works are currently underway on the
road, and the Government has recently allocated a further 235,681 for the road
between Loo Bridge to the junction of the main Killarney/Cork road. I have requested that improvements are made to the junction at the main road to make it safer for
motorists; I have also requested that better signage is installed.
Kilgarvan Water Supply pipe. Work on putting the water supply pipe underground
from Coomclogherane to Kilgarvan will commerce on the last week of June or early
July. I am glad to have ensured Kerry County Council allocated 200,000. for this
project and associated works.
€15,000 grant for Young Entrepreneurs. Local entrepreneurs between the ages of
15 and 22 should submit their ideas on job creation to the Minister for Children and
youth Affairs to win a research grant of 15,000 and a week shadowing a top Irish
Entrepreneur. It would be fantastic to have local participation in this programme
which offers some exciting rewards for winning proposals. Entries are being evaluated by leading Irish Business people and Entrepreneurs. The competition is being
organised in conjunction with TV3’s “every Job Counts” campaign and in line with
the Governments focus on job creation. Many young people have huge energy and
ideas for economic development and this imitative will help them structure those
ideas into workable proposals. To enter this competition e- mail your proposal to
[email protected] or send it to Minister Frances Fitzgerald, Dept. of
Children, Mespil Road, Dublin 4.

a retail outlet - producing the very items that are on display, and
that's what makes a visit to Paul's shop so special.
"It's as much a gallery as a shop, "Says Paul, "And I'm quite happy for
people to come in just to look around. a lot of people are quite interested in
seeing the items being made."
Certainly his work has been noticed and has featured in many national and
international publications.
Over the years Paul has crafted some very personalised pieces for local
customers. "Tourists usually buy what is already made but with local people I
often get the chance to make something which is special to them. We pick out
a birthstone or an emblem that represents them, and work a design around it."
"It might be cufflinks for a graduation or a ring to mark an anniversary, and
of course wedding and engagement rings are very personal. It's nice to have
something unique."
Paul's door is open so do drop in and have a look, He has enjoyed the past
fifteen years crafting jewellery on Henry Street and is looking forward to
another fifteen years, and more, there.

Week end
We were delighted to play hosts
for the walking event in Kenmare,
over the June Bank Holiday
weekend. The feedback was
very positive and the marketing
will start in the next month for the
2012 Walking Festival to ensure
next year’s event is bigger and
better. The event could not have
been delivered without the
tremendous support of the
Kenmare Walking Club and their
fabulous ‘nothing is a problem’
approach.
There was a competition to
promote the weekend, sponsored
by Dream Ireland and D’Arcys
restaurant. The winner was Mary
Horgan, from Cork and an email
received from Mary convey her
thoughts….
“I would like to offer you my
thanks for making my days in
Kenmare more enjoyable last
week and to let you know the
house in Sheen View was perfect.
After cycling 65k on Friday from
Kenmare to Sneem, Molls Gap
and back to Kenmare, the meal
in d’Arcys was absolutely terrific
and the staff couldn’t have been
nicer.
It was a great surprise to win the
prize and it was much
appreciated. My thanks again.”

offenders will be dealt with
through the Parking Bye-Laws and
the Roads Act, 1993. The support
of the Gardai in enforcing this

Global Pharmaceutical Centre of Excellence
As everybody knows these companies were going to locate in County
Kerry bringing thousands of much needed jobs. Unfortunately the
previous and present Governments and the IDA have not done enough to
ensure their location here. In contrast to this Invest Northern Ireland are
doing everything they can to attract the jobs north. I really feel we are
missing out on a massive opportunity by letting these jobs go.
I raised this issue in the Dail on Tuesday 7th June and I called on the
Taoiseach and his Government to, even at this late stage, become more
pro-active in trying to secure the jobs for our region.
Following on from raising this important issue, a meeting will take place
between the IDA, Enterprise Ireland, Shannon Development and Kerry
Oireachtas Members regarding the GPCE project at the Department of
Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation on Tuesday 14th June. I welcome this
move and I thank Minister Jimmy Deenihan for his co-operation on the
matter.
Parliamentary Questions
The following are a selection of parliamentary questions that I recently
put forward:
I asked the Taoiseach to make a statement with regard to the uncertainty
of the funding of the Fair Deal into the future.
On behalf of seasonal workers/unsociable hours and the issue of the
proposed changes in wages, I asked that an amendment be made to
exclude these workers from these proposals.
What plans are in place to implement the National Carer’s Strategy?
As a result of the loss of 60 jobs in Fexco, what plans do the Minister
and the IDA have to try and create jobs in the Caherciveen area.
Are there any proposals to organize a cull of mink along our waterways?
Request to open Castlemaine Harbour to commercial salmon fishing once
again.
What can be done to stop the practice of receiving unsolicited texts on
mobile phones, which incur unnecessary expense on people.

Query with regard to the undocumented Irish in the USA and how the
Government can help them.
I am very sorry and disappointed that the Ceann Comhairle has
disallowed the following Dail question which I wanted to raise :
“To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and National
Resources the reason why Eircom workers should accept a 9 day
fortnight while at the same time the CEO of the company is on an
increased salary of €800,000 per year and a bonus of 4 million”.
I asked the Minister to make a statement on the matter. The Ceann
Comhairle replied that the Minister has no official responsibility to Dail
Eireann for this matter, which is a day to day one for Eircom itself.
While on one hand I can appreciate where he is coming from, surely
considering that this one time state asset was ours, there must be
someone responsible for this great anomaly whereby the workers are
being treated this way and management are enjoying an abundance of
money in these times of severe cutbacks.
The issue of the installation of rumble strips on our local roads has
often been brought to my attention and I previously raised it with
Kerry County Council.
Kerry County Council always gave the impression that the installation of
these rumble strips were against a national policy. This is not factually
correct as when I raised the matter with the new Minister for Transport
Leo Varadkar the reply that he gave me is that the provision of any traffic
calming measures is a matter for each local authority. It is in the interest
of the safety and convenience of road users to provide such traffic
calming measures as they consider desirable in respect of public roads in
their charge. These measures would include traffic signs, road markings,
ramps, rumble strips and measures to prevent, restrict or control access to
a public road or roads by mechanically propelled vehicles. In the case of
national roads the consent of the NRA is required.
I would ask people to please note that he clearly states that ramps can
also be provided. I know of many locations at schools where ramps such
as these would be desirable in the interest of the safety of our young
people in particular. Indeed I have numerous locations in my books that
have actually asked for such ramps in the past and have been refused by
the council. I am glad to get clarity on this matter and I will be raising it
at council level to try to get the policy that the council are implementing
changed.
Working in conjunction with Johnny Healy-Rae, we are dealing with
the following issues
We are glad that remedial works are to start on the Eastern Relief Road
in Kenmare within the next two months, starting at the Supervalu side.
A full flood study of Kenmare is being carried out by the OPW. To be
honest I think it is ridiculous as the time for studies should actually be
finished as we all know what works are required to relieve any flooding
in Kenmare. It is the same situation with regard to Sneem – we know
exactly what is wrong there, all we need is funding to carry out the
works.
The Bord Pleanala review of the proposed extraction order for the Sheen
River has been put back until the 15th July 2011. I sincerely hope that
Bord Pleanala will take on board the views of the people of Bonane and
indeed the greater Kenmare area in that they do not want an extraction
order to be put on the river.

ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY
After a month of constant rain we are now promised some
good weather which hopefully we will actually see. With
this season we see the return of the ticks and fleas and
these need to be treated or prevented as otherwise they can
be harmful to your animals health. Please get medical
advice when purchasing products for this treatment as it is
important to buy the right product. Also it is vital that you
know the weight of your animal as to use the wrong
dosage can be a waste or actually harmful. Also remember
to use a product meant for a dog on a cat can cause serious
problems.
We are desperate for foster homes for dogs and cats. If
you can help with this or know someone who can please

EVER WONDERED WHAT
EXCATLY IS PILATES?
PILATES is a mat based exercise system, it was originally
pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates, a team of physical
therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals have
spent over two decades refining the PILATES method of
exercise and equipment. This resulted in the inclusion of
modern principles of exercise science and spinal
rehabilitation, making it one of the safest and effective
methods available. It’s used by rehab and prenatal clients,
athletes, celebrities and everyone in between.
Who will PILATES benefit?
A. Everyone! It can be modified to suit your abilities. It
improves your flexibility and strengthens weak muscles. It
works specifically on strengthening your core muscles as
well as creating more mobility in your shoulders, knees,
back and hips. The pace at beginner’s class will be easy
enough to do regardless of your fitness or flexibility.
What do I need to bring?
A. All mats and equipment is provided! You will be best
of wearing comfortable clothes (tracksuit or leggings and tshirt).

Well, we are still waiting for summer ! Not much joy in the weather situation over the
last few weeks with the below average temperatures holding back growth in the
garden and some of the earlier planted bedding plants and vegetable plants are
making no effort to put on any spurt of growth at all until it warms up a bit. So at this
stage growth is lagging behind time. Lets hope for a good spell of fine weather by the
end of the month at least so we can enjoy those lazy, crazy dayz of summer !
Anyway, no more talk of weather, down to business....This is a busy month for the
garden when we should be getting the lawn in good shape for the summer, planting
up the summer patio containers and flower beds and getting the vegetable garden
fully planted with seeds and seedlings.
1. The LAWN as mentioned in last monthsʼ article should have received a dose of
lawn feed and weedkiller by now. If not, you can still do it now. This will allow the
grass to reclaim ground taken up by the weeds and will then look far healthier during
the coming winter. Very stubborn perennial weeds like thistle and dock that may not
succumb to the regular lawn weedkiller can be sprayed for with a specific weedkiller
individually or can be dug out of the lawn.
1. The planting season for SUMMER BEDDING and window boxes and other
containers has been in full swing since May and will continue into July. There is a
wide range of summer bedding and patio plants available in the Garden Centres for
making all kinds of colourful arrangements. With all the rain we have been having
lately you should remember to use a liquid fertilizer when ever you can to help perk
up the plants. Watch out for slugs and early green fly(aphids) attacks ! Deal with them
appropriately before a pest build up causes serious damage.
2. Over the last few months a lot of SHRUBS have been replaced in the garden
over the last few months and remember to apply a couple of doses of fertilizer during
the summer to encourage growth and establishment. The flowering buds of next
springʼs Camelia and Rhododendron are formed after midsummer so keep the plants
as healthy as possible to encourage good bud development and flower displays next
year. Some interesting plants to add to your garden at the moment for increased
colour would be the bright leaves of Escalonia Gold Brian, Photinia Red Robin and
the smaller leafed P. Little Red Robin or the soft arching branches of Spirea
Snowmound covered in white flowers and the various Hebes that will be coming into
flower from now on. Roses have been growing well since the spring and are bursting
into flower.
3. The range of Herbaceous and PERENNIAL plants in flower is increasing as
summer progresses with Lavender, Nepeta , Campanula and Geraniums providing
various shades of blue and purple, Cerastium and Arenaria providing a good white
groundcover and taller spikes of Astilbe , Delphinium, Hosta, Lupin , Libertia and
many more adding interest to the garden. All of these plants put on a fine display
during the summer before fading away in the autumn only to reappear again the
following spring forming an even larger clump than the previous year. All of these
perennial plants came through last winter unscathed and are a great asset to any
garden.
4. The VEGETABLE garden should be in full swing now with summer salad plants
ready for harvest. The early growth in the garden has come to a practical halt in the
recent weeks but will make a comeback as soon as the weather picks up... ! Potatoes
will need to be sprayed against blight as soon as the temperature picks up a little.
Sow further sowings of carrots, parsnips and beans if there has been to many
fatalities in previous sowings. Salad crops like onions, lettuce , beetroot, radish..etc
can be sown in regular intervals throughout the summer so as to provide a constant
supply of vege into the autumn. It is also a good time for the various pests in the
garden so keep a watchful eye on slugs and protect your cabbages from caterpillars
by using a net to prevent the Butterflies from laying eggs on the leaves.
5. In both the fruit and flower garden keep an eye out for the beginning of greenfly
attacks. The greenfly, or aphids, will normally attack the softest part of the plant
which is normally in the shoot tip. In roses they will be found in the young leaves at
the shoot tip and along the stems of the flower buds and even in the flower itself. The
shoot tips of peas, under the youngest cabbage leaves and in the lettuce head are
also their favourite eating grounds. These need to be controlled in the early stages of
attack so that damage is kept to a minimum. Soapy water helps deter greenfly as
does a Garlic spray whilst Liquid Derris is a good spray for flowering plants if needed.
Roseclear spray also contains a chemical to control greenfly on Roses.
6. If you have patches of moss on pathways or on the driveway now is a good time
to give it a spray. The moss would be already under pressure during the summer and
a chemical spray would give good control.
7. And, remember , if the sun does manage to break through get the Barbeque out
and enjoy the evening ! make the most of it....CHEERS !
Simon.

Gnomeo & Juliet
The greatest love story ever told - starring garden
gnomes! In Gnomeo and Juliet Shakespeare’s tale
gets a comical makeover. When feuding
neighbours go at it, the garden gnomes join the
fight and it’s Red V Blue. Blue gnome Gnomeo
meets the rebellious red gnome Juliet when they
are both outside their yards on a quest for a rare
flower in a near by abandoned yard. Each
disguised for their secret mission, nether realises
the other is actually the ‘enemy’ and both are
smitten. Once they discover each others true
identity they must convince their families that
there is no reason to hate each other. With the
help of cheeky frog Nanette and a hilarious
plastic pink flamingo they return to their yards
only to find world war three has broken out in
the garden complete with smashed gnomes and
the killer uber-lawnmower ‘Terrafirminator’ bent
on total destruction.

Talk 7pm /Screening 8pm. Admission €6
'Arise, You Gallant Sweeneys!' documents a road
trip made in late summer 2008 by an unusual
and memorable band of travellers.
At the core of this film lie the experiences of a
group of Irish working men who travelled to the
UK as very young men in the 1950s and 60s, and
who never made it home. The documentary asks
what happened to these men, who built the
motorways of post-war Britain, when they
reached the end of the road.
However, this is not just a film about the men, it
is a film by them. The film is unique in that the
group retains directorial and collective
ownership over all the material produced.
Members of the Long Distance Gang (named in
homage to a shared working history) have wideranging experiences; amongst them musicians,
artists, film-makers, activists, survivors of
orphanages, care systems, street homelessness,
alcohol dependency, sectarian violence, domestic
violence, and enduring mental health problems.
All proceeds from DVD sales and screenings go
towards the Stor Mo Chroi fund which supports
holidays and other social opportunities for older
Irish people.
'Arise, You Gallant Sweeneys!' is a Long
Distance Gang/OutSideFilm production.

Falvey and Spillane unite to Walk
the Way for Cancer Research
World renowned adventurer Pat
Falvey and legendary Kerry
footballer and sports pundit Pat
Spillane put County rivalries
aside to launch the Kerry Way
Cancer Research Walk 2011 in
aid of Cork Cancer Research
Centre. Both men will take to
the Kerry Way to lead over 250
walkers out during the 3 day
hill walk which will take place
on July 22nd, 23rd and 24th.
“There are still too many people, family and friends who are
affected by cancer. The research this walk supports is the kind of
cutting edge research that will change that. Having heard about the
work of the Cork Cancer Research Centre, I am delighted to join
these trails and raise vital funds for their work. The Kerry Way
provides a spectacular setting for this fun event and the three
routes for 2011 are both stunning and challenging. I’m looking
forward to it.” said Pat Spillane.

The Kenmare Karate Club has recently entered two
karate tournaments and has done very well in both.
We also hosted our very first annual competition on
the 28th of February of this year.
There was a good number of competitors all bringing their family and
friends to watch. Our training dojo was fit to burst which only helped
the atmosphere of the day. Of the seventy entrants, four were world
champions. The Kenmare Club came away with sixteen medals. Some
of the local students pushed the world champions all the way and on
three occasions beating them to gold and silver medals.
In the next karate tournament, which was held at the Eccles Hotel in
Glengarriff and was hosted by the Glengarriff and Bantry Karate Club
seven Kenmare students won a total of ten medals between them. A big
thanks as to be given to Sensei Les Elliot for inviting Kenmare students
and for providing such a well run tournament with some very good kata
on display and some spectacular sparing techniques on show.
On a more personal matter I would like to thank the parents and
students for their support and commitment over the last year for making
the Kenmare Karate Club a success. We have also joined the F.S.K.A.
(Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association) which is one of the world
governing bodies of karate. For further details on karate you can

Sixteen year old Katie Moffatt from Kenmare chieved the
biggest win of her career, winning the Junior class at
Tattersalls International 3 day event at the end of last
month.
Riding her striking coloured gelding, Pick and Mix II, Katie led
the Junior group after the dressage section. She then jumped clear
inside the time over Ian Stark's imposing cross country course and
then jumped an immaculate clear show jumping round to secure
victory.
This was the second International class the pair have won in the
last six weeks, having previously won the CIC* class at
Ballindenisk International, becoming the youngest rider ever to have
won an open international class in Ireland.
Katie and Pick and Mix II have been in the top two positions all
season, and are now strongly fancied for a team place to represent
Ireland at the European Championships in Portugal during the first
week of September.
Katie is trained by Sue Smallman, International Dressage rider,
Ian Fearon senior showjumping coach and Sue Shortt, Irish Olympic
team member. She is generously sponsored by TRM, Ireland's
leading supplier of horse supplements.

Kenmare Athletic Club enjoys continued success
With the season barely half way through, Kenmare Athletic
Club can look back on the past few weeks with pride. We won
our first Munster track and field medal on 30th April when Elinor
Dennison took the bronze in the U11 multi-event quadrathon at CIT.
This was followed by 17 individual and 2 relay medals at the Kerry
county championships on 14th/15th May. Medal winners on the day
were Liam Palmer, Christian Casey, Daragh Murphy, Asher Grant,
Leon O’Sullivan, Cian O’Sullivan, Conor O’Brien, David Murphy,
Aodhan Coakley, Aisling Rochford, Serena O’Sullivan, Ciara
O’Sullivan, Siobhan Murphy, Elinor Dennison, Hannah
O’Donoghue, Helena O’Sullivan, Mary Theresa Burns, Mikaela
Mulcahy, Catherina Murphy, Stephanie Burns and Laura Hallissey.
Before we’d had time to relax we were hosting our own Primary
School Sports on 22nd May. This was very well attended and the
first 3 in each race and top 2 in each field event were put forward
for the Kerry Primary Schools Final on Saturday 28th May in
Castleisland. 65 children made the trip with many of our young
athletes competing for the very first time and 7 individual medals
and 2 relay medals were won – a step up from the results of last
year. Gold went to Cian O'Sullivan (St Francis N.S.) 3rd class 80m.
Silver went to Kate Murphy (St Clare's N.S.) 2nd class 60m, David
Murphy (Sneem N.S.) 5th class 600m and Ben Crowley (Cahir
N.S.) 4th class 200m. Bronze medals were won by Elinor Dennison
(St Clare's N.S.) 4th class 200m, Christian Casey 2nd class 60m and
Denis Cronin (St Francis N.S.) 6th class 600m. St Clare's Girls N.S.
were 3rd in both the 2nd class relay (Eve Roberts-White, Clionadh
Daly, Aibhin Whelton and Kate Murphy) and 4th class relay
(Kaitlyn Moriarty, Cara Daly, Emer O'Sullivan and Elinor
Dennison). More results and pictures can be found on the club
website www.kenmareathleticclub.com.
Training continues at the GAA sports field every Friday from 6:307:30pm. The Community Games finals will be held in Castleisland
on 25th/26th June. All athletes who will attending should come to
Friday training sessions between now and then.
Don’t miss the Sneem Primary School Sports Day on 16th June
at 5:30pm at the Sneem Sports field. The event is confined to
primary schools in the greater Kenmare area and will be run under
Community Games age limits with medals and perpetual trophies
awarded to best overall schools. Entry 2 per child, 5 per family.

Tommy Healy Cup Semi Final Replay
Inter Kenmare B 1-1 Sneem Santos
Inter 3-0 on Penalties
Inter and Sneem met on Sunday in Kenmare to decide who
would go through to the final of the Tommy Healy cup. Both
sides have had successful seasons, with Sneem being
crowned Division 2A champions, and Inter finishing a close
third behind them. There was a great crowd in Kenmare for
this game and a noisy atmosphere. The game was frantic
from the start, with Inter possibly getting the better of the
early exchanges. Sean Sheehan had his man in all kinds of
trouble down the right wing, and forced a number of
corners as Sneem were forced to defend under serious
pressure. After one excellent move after ten minutes, a
flicked-on cross found its way to Ger O’Dwyer, and he
finished left-footed into the corner of the Santos net.
Even after scoring, Inter pushed on, and always looked likely
to get a second goal, whil keeping things tight at the back.
Donal O’Sullivan and Mark Granville were solid in the centre
of defence, while Marcin Urbisz and Joseph Sheehan had
superb games in the full-back slots. Sneem have quality in
their team though and couldn’t be kept quiet for 90 minutes.
Shane Cremin was moved out to the right wing for the
second half, and both him and the no. 9 started to cause
problems. Inter seemed happy to defend the 1-0 lead, and
retreated into their half of the field from early in the half.
Jimmy O’Brien tried hard all half, but couldn’t get the break
or offside call that he needed to get past some very alert
defenders. Inte had chances on the break, but as the half
wore on they seemed to get more and more trapped in
their own half. Sneem got their chance to equalise in the last
minute, with Shane Cremin picking up the ball in space just
outsite the box. He made no mistake and put the ball right
into the top corner.
Extra time was 10 minutes a half, but nothing much
happened over the course of the 20 minutes. This brought
us to penalties, where:
Sneem – Jimmy O’Brien, good shot saved by Ronan
O’Tuama
Inter – Mark Granville – Goal
Sneem – Wide
Inter – Marcin Urbisz – Goal
Sneem – Ove the bar
Inter – Robert Hodnett - winning goal.
Inter now travel on to the cup final, and would appeal to all
our supporters to try and make it to the game.
Kennedy Cup This Month
The annual Kennedy Cup will be held in UKL, Limerick from
Monday the 13th to Friday the 17th of June. This is the most
prestigious underage inter-county tournament, and Kerry are
seeded 6th, in a group with Sligo/Leitrim, North Tipp and
South Tipp. Inter Kenmare’s Ray O’Shea is in the squad,
having recovered from a bad injury to take his place, and
hopeully the number 1 jersey for the games. Best of luck top
Ray from everyone at Inter Kenmare.
Under 10 International Friendly in Kenmare
St. James the Less from the Manchester area of England
came to Kenmare on May 26th for the annual friendly with
Inter. This turned out to be a brilliant game, with both teams
trying their heart out. The final result was 1-1, with Ben
Crowley receiving a special award from the visiting team for
his man of the match performance. Tadgh O’Siochriu also
had a super game showng some great skills.
Tuesday June 7th
Reserve Cup
Inter Kenmare B 1-1 Ballymac Galaxy
Inter Kenmare’s B team stretched their unbeaten run to 15
games on Tuesday night, with a 1-1 draw against Ballymac
in Kenmare. The visitors took the lead early on, but Inter got
to grips with the game and were on top for most of the 90
minutes. The equaliser came from Commie Cremin, and
Sean Sheehan had a nailed-on penalty turned down with 10
minutes left. The run goes on, but Inter are strruggling with
injuries at this stage, with Mark Granville, Dermot O’SullivanCasey, Mike O’Connor, Gearoid O’Brien and Sean O’Leary all
doubtful for the big cup game against Sneem.
Summer Soccer In Kenmare
FAI Summer Soccer is coming to Kenmare again this
summer, with a 5-day camp starting on August 15th. This
camp has always been a great success and is very well run.
This year we have the added benefit of indoor facilities for
those wet days, so the days of worrying about eating lunch
in the rain are gone. To book your place on the camp, go to
www.summersoccerschools.ie. Book early and you can get
names printed on the set of kit you receive at the camp.

Continental Irish Car of the Year 2011
The Nissan Juke is the Continental Irish Car of the Year 2011
The Juke is a Compact SUV meets sports car and challenges small
car traditions. Developed from Qazana concept car the Juke is tough
on the streets yet agile and athletic. With powerful new
turbocharged direct injection petrol engine and new torque vectoring
all-wheel drive system this new addition hosts a technologically
advanced information system.
From a design standpoint, the lower portion of Juke is pure SUV,
with chunky wheels, wide tyres, extended ground clearance and a
robust stance. But the top portion is unadulterated sports car, with a
high waistline, slim visor-like side glass graphics and a coupé-style
falling roofline. The coupé effect is further underlined by the rear
doors which have their handles hidden in the frame of the door.
The Nissan Juke has been designed and developed to give customers
an alternative to the traditional small hatchback in Europe.
