Letters to the Editor....
Dear Editor
Further to our conversation I want to thank the
people of Kenmare and surrounding districts for
the brilliant support that they have given to me in
my efforts to raise funds for the Kerry Life
Education Children’s Charity over the years.
Kerry Life Education visits primary schools in all
communities with their Mobile Classroom and
Harold the Giraffe, helping young people to make
informed healthy choices around a range of issues
including personal health, hygiene, diet, exercise and lifestyle, self
awareness and self esteem, peer dynamics and bullying and
substance and alcohol misuse. They also provide an interlinking
follow on service to second level schools to help young people deal
with the many challenges that face them as they grow older
In the five years that I have made my annual collection on their
behalf, I have collected a total of 16,500 for this excellent service
and this huge amount reflects the amazing support and generosity
of local people.
So a big thank you to you all, at the age of 80 I can now retire
knowing that together we have made a real contribution towards the
future of our young people.

Optimise your health, personalise your diet
with Christine Bender-Pototzki
When it comes to chronic conditions such as bloating,
irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, eczema, joint pains
and fatigue there is growing evidence that what goes into
the mouth produces a reaction in the body, and that food
is a really important factor.
Tests for allergies are sometimes carried out, but food intolerance, which is
less easy to diagnose, is frequently overlooked. Intolerances to foods are very
common with up to 45 % of the population suffering. Food intolerance is
associated with many different chronic symptoms including headaches,
intestinal and skin symptoms. You will know if you suffer from a full-blown
allergy to a food, strong immediate reactions to foods such as nuts and
shellfish are typical of classical allergy reactions. However, other effects of
food sensitivity are more subtle and less well understood.
Currently the best accepted method for confirming food sensitivities is by
elimination diet. This involves eating a restricted diet for several weeks. If
there is no improvement during this time, it is assumed that the food type
that has been restricted is not causing the symptoms, and the process is
repeated with another food type. This method is very time consuming and
because it is impossible to test all the different combinations of food types
that may be causing the problems, it is a very ineffective process. Every
individual person is unique with a different biochemical make-up, even to
others with similar conditions. For example, cow’s milk, nuts and yeast may
be responsible for Aoife’s eczema, but safe for Katie, who also has eczema.
Eggs, strawberries and lentils may contribute to John’s irritable bowel, but
they will be fine for Patrick to eat, even though he regularly suffers from
bloating and diarrhoea.
One approach that is available is a blood test that measures food-specific
IgG –antibodies. Antibodies are substances produced naturally by the body to
identify and neutralise foreign objects such as bacteria and viruses.
Antibodies to foods are found in the body when the immune system has
identified a particular food type as being foreign. Antibodies are also known
as Immunoglobulins (abbreviated Ig) and one type of antibody is the IgG
antibody. Measurements of IgG antibodies to foods in blood show that the
body is “fighting” that particular food. It has been shown that removal of
foods from the diet that the body is reacting to in this way can reduce ill
health symptoms.
If you require more information about food intolerance testing or would
like to make an appointment please ring 064-6679880 or call into
McSweeney Pharmacy Kenmare and we will be more than happy to answer
any query you may have.

Kerry families begin to feel the
pain of Budget cuts
Families across Co Kerry will soon begin to
feel the pain of a range of cutbacks and new
taxes in Budget 2013 and it is lower and
middle income families, and particularly
those with young children, who will bear
the brunt of the cuts as they begin to take
effect from this month. The reality of a
budget that was riddled with broken
promises and deeply unfair cuts will hit
home in households across Co Kerry in the
coming weeks and the bottom line is that
the package of measures in Budget 2013
amounted to an attack on lower and middle
income families who are already struggling
to keep their heads above water. If you
would like more information on how the
budget may affect you or your family,
please do not hesitate to contact me.

Notes...
With
John O’Hare
I loved night fly fishing on the Lower Roughty River, my
quarry was the elusive sea trout. There is something both surreal
and mystical about casting a fly into the darkness and retrieving
slowly and cautiously, then the explosion of sound in the still night
as you hook into a fish unseen but by his power a good one of
maybe two pounds weight, the battle, too much pressure and you
will lose him as their mouths are soft when they come into the
river first. Eventually landing a beautiful fish, a successful
outcome to a nights fishing.
One particular night I had just started fishing, when on the far
bank I noticed a group of people. They were impossible to
recognise as firstly it was dark, secondly they wore beanie caps
pulled down, and lastly the collars of their coats were up. They
proceeded to unfold a big net and put it into the river. This was too
much for me, I had been looking forward to a nice peaceful night
fishing.
‘Stop,’ I shouted, “I do not know who you are but you surely
know me. Please do not blatantly poach the river in front of me. If
you want to do it atall go where I cannot see you.’
This had the desired effect, they pulled the net back in and then sat
on the bank smoking and obviously discussing their next move. A
light mist started to fall, that meant the fishing by me would be
useless anyway. I crept into the bushes and took down my rod and
tackle, then I quietly slipped away in the gloom and went home.
Fast forward twelve months, a local comes into the shop to buy a
pair of thigh waders for fishing. I had his correct size and they
were the type he wanted. Just one small problem, he was short of
cash to pay for them, €10 to be exact.
‘I will take them,’ he said, ‘And give you the balance in a couple

handmade soap.
The scent and the label of the soap should be reminiscent of
Kenmare, and the wining soap which will be called ‘Kenmare Soap’
will be sold in the shop.
The money raised (after costs for ingredients has been taken out)
from the sale of the soap will go to the new Kenmare Family Center
run by Joy Clifford.
Entry forms are available shop Bath and Crafts, 2 Rock Street or
from local schools. Closing date for entries is February 27th.
It is hoped that the soap will go on sale by March 15th, or to
coincide with the opening of the new family centre.
of weeks. You know I am as good as my word, do you remember
asking my friends and I to pull our net out of the water last year
when we were fishing and we did.’
‘Yes,’ I said, ‘I remember it well, how could I forget.’
‘There you go then,’ he said, picking up his waders and out the
door with him.
I would love to tell you that he came good and paid up, but that
would be asking you to go a step too far in trusting people.
As I mention every year the salmon fishing season opens on
different dates all over the country. The first Spring salmon on
January 1st this year were caught on the Drowse River in County
Donegal. Two lovely salmon, one of ten pounds and one of six
pounds, both by anglers from Northern Ireland. The first one was
on a red flying C. and the second on a yellow one. Killarney Lakes
and Waterville Lakes opened on January 17th so we will have to
wait a bit for a report on them. The fishing in the Kenmare area
does NOT open until March 15th.
There is a perfectly good reason for the closed season in
fishing. It allows the fish to spawn, also if you kept on hammering
the fish the whole year through there would be none left to catch
in the finish, common sense would tell you that.
A fellow came into me during Christmas week.
‘I was up in Caha Lakes for a spot of fishing,’ he said.
I looked at him, ‘During the Summer was it?’
‘No, last week,’ he replied.
‘And did you catch anything?’ I asked
‘Four fish on the fly, ‘ he replied.
I told him that if he was caught he could have got a hefty fine and
had his gear confiscated to which he replied, ‘Boloney, I was
doing no harm I just wanted to see if I could catch trout up there
in the Winter time. I am leaving the country for a while looking
for work and I wanted to carry a memory of the mountain lakes
and fishing with me.’
Can you imagine how dangerous it is climbing up and down Caha
Mountains in the middle of Winter? On one hand I condemn
fishing out of season, yet on the other hand he has my complete
sympathy. It is a dilemma, with no straight answer.

Know Your Rights
I’m living alone, aged over 70 and getting the
Household Benefits Package. I understand it has
been affected by Budget 2013. Can you tell me
what the changes are?
Yes, the Household Benefits Package has been changed in
Budget 2013. The value of the Electricity/Gas Allowance and the
Telephone Allowance will be reduced for new and existing
recipients from January 2013.
The Electricity Allowance is being adjusted from a unit-based
allowance to a fixed amount of 35 per month. The Gas
Allowance was previously paid at different winter and summer
rates. From January 2013 it will be paid at a new standard
monthly rate of 35.
These allowances can be paid either as a credit on your bill or
as a cash allowance, depending on your supplier and your
payment method.
This change does not affect your choice of supplier and you
can choose the supplier who can best meet your energy needs.
There are various commercial websites that allow you to compare
energy prices. The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER)
accredits cost comparison websites if they meet certain standards.
You can check accredited websites on energycustomers.ie.
The Telephone Allowance is a payment towards your mobile
phone or your landline phone bill. The value of this allowance
will be reduced from 22.58 to a new monthly rate of 9.50. This
will show as a credit on your bill or can be paid as a cash
allowance.
There is no change to the Free TV Licence, the Fuel Allowance,
Free Travel or Living Alone Allowance.

are born around June and we have normally homed all the smallies
by around October-lst year the kittens did not stop. The bad news
is, that mating season will be upon us anyday so please get any cats
over 6 months old spay or neutered males and females. We will
never eliviate the the problem of unwanted litters if we dont
continually spay and neuter. If there are wild cats in your area,
please help us to get them done too as 2 cats can very soon lead to
50 cat. It is everyones problem and easily fixed if we all play our
part! If you can give a cat or kitten a loving home as a family pet
(the cat must be allowed into the family home) and if you dont live
directly on a main busy road, then please give us a call. So many
cats and kittens are currently being kept in cages as we have no
foster homes for them

Nollaig Neidin 2012
Sometimes all you need is….
Christmas Lights, a choir or two, 50 plus children
dressed as elves, stars, boxes, nativity characters,
Santa and Mrs Claus and a reasonably dry night to
kick off a wonderful Christmas Festival.
Nollaig Neidin 2012 began with a magical evening of music we
were so lucky to have the choirs that were participating in The Choral
Festival join us in the parade which was bigger and better than ever
this year. What a great crowd turned out to watch the parade which
makes it so special for those taking part and especially all the children.
Huge thanks to the many people who participated and helped both
with the parade and the concert afterwards. For one night The
Courthouse was transformed into a stage and what a beautiful
backdrop the building proved to be. The choirs, the children and of
course Vida Randles welcomed The Christmas Spirit to Kenmare with
their beautiful Hymns and carols.
Tasty treats, mulled wine and hot chocolate were once again
donated from so many of the local business’s and it really the night to
have this available to everyone following the parade.
Thank you to those who organised one of the many events that ran
throughout Nollaig Neidin from storytelling and yoga to Christmas
Food & Wine Fairs, treasure hunts and organised walks ensuring that
there was something for everyone. The Nutcracker Suite which was a
great success and huge thanks to Bibbity Bobbity Boo and Mrs Claus
for their time and effort. There are still some stockings to be collected
and they can be picked up in O’Donoghue’s Henry Street until 4th
February.
The Kenmare Social and Family Events committee organises the
Christmas festival, Easter Egg Hunt and the Halloween parade.
Please contact any of the committee members if you would like to
make suggestions for future events or if anyone would like to run an
event, all feedback and views are welcomed by the committee.

Cllr Patrick
ConnorScarteen’s report
€760,000 allocated
for the Kenmare
Relief Road
Minister for Transport,
Tourism & Sport Leo
Varadkar TD recently
announced the Non
National Roads
Programme which
includes €760,000. For
the Kenmare Eastern
Relief Road, it is a major
allocation especially in
Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport
light of the fact that the
Leo Varadkar TD pictured with Cllr
National Roads
Patrick Connor Scarteen
Programme has been
reduced by over €300
Million for 2013. In the previous 3 years the Eastern Relief road
received annual allocations of between €200,000-€300,000.
Allocations for roads under different grant headings are to be
announced shortly. €800,00 has also been allocated for Bonane
Road.
Meeting with Minister for Transport,
Tourism & Sport
I met with Minister Varadkar TD a few weeks ago at his office in
Government Buildings and discussed a variety of issues with him
including the need for improvements to roads such the N71Bonane
and N70 Sneem Village, changes needed to national roads policy
including the issue of the National Roads Authority appealing planning permissions granted by local Authorities to An Board Pleanala.
The need for the reintroduction of the Local Improvement Scheme,
a statement on this is to be announced. The new testing system for
road improvements etc I also discussed a number of Tourism and
Sport related initiatives with the Minister.
Extra Places on Community
Employment Scheme
I welcome the news that 2000 additional places are to be made
available on the Community Employment Programme. An allocation
of 500 additional places will be reserved for childcare support and
500 for social and health related services. Also priority will be given
to schemes and organisations who can demonstrate a track record in
the development and progression of participants into employment.
This is part of the Department of Social Protections €1 Billion programme on activation projects and other supports this year to help
job seekers acquire the work experience, skills and qualifications
they need to return to full time employment. The community
employment scheme does some fantastic work in our community.
Water Services
There has been big investment in public water schemes in Kerry in
2012 and this will be continued in 2013. The Water Services
Department of KCC has carried out considerable work in our locality, no where else in Kerry has there been as much work done.
Tuosist and Dawros have been taken over by the Council,
Rossdohan, Tahilla is progressing well however there are delays
with the land registry issues, in relation to Bonane the scheme is
Kenmare News
being taken over by Kerry County Council at the request of the
Community, the Council has applied to the Department of
Environment for Funding for the scheme. In Caher East, Kilgarvan
work was also carried out in 2012. Regarding the water supply for
Kilgarvan the work on the pipe from Coomclogherane to Kilgarvan
is progressing well and should be completed in March.
Improvement works on the treatment Plant in Kilgarvan are also
taking place. The Water Services Department have to be thanked for
their work done to date on these works, also the people involved in
the Group schemes in the different localities have done fantastic
work for their communities throughout the years.
Monthly motions
The following are my two permitted monthly motions;
That Kerry County Council commence without delay the process of
regulation of the Casual trading situation in Kenmare in the interests
of businesses and traders. The casual trading situation is an attractive feature for the town but regulation is needed.
That Kerry County Council does it’s utmost to curb illegal dumping
and littering in 2013, in the interests of the people of Kerry, the
local environment and to create a positive image of the County to
tourists whom there should be extra numbers visiting the County
this year due to the Gathering.
Community Alert- personal alarms
I am glad that the proposal to cut the grant for the personal alarms
has been reversed. The national grant for personal alarms will
remain at €2.25 Million. These alarms are of great assistance to our
older persons, they provide peace of mind and security. Community
Alert Organisations in our area provide great assistance to older persons.
Local Election Boundary Committee
As part of Local Government Reform, radical changes are been
implemented including the abolition of all town Councils so in
Kerry Listowel, Tralee and Killarney town Councils will no longer
exist after 2014. Kerry County Development Board is also to be
abolished. At County Council level currently there are 5 electoral
districts in Kerry this is to be reduced to 4, boundary changes will
therefore have to be made, I have made a submission that regardless
of what changes are made that Kenmare and its surrounding districts
including the Sneem and Kilgarvan Areas remain in the same electoral area.
Area meeting
The next area meeting of the Killorglin Electoral Area will take
place on Friday 22 February; if anyone has any issues they wish for
me to raise feel free to contact me.
All Ireland Junior Football Semi Final:
Best of luck to Kenmare in the All Ireland Junior Football Semi
Final when they take on Dublin side Castleknock. The Match takes
place in Mitchelstown on Sunday 27th January at 2pm. Hopefully a
big crowd from Kenmare will travel to the game to cheer them on.

A special thank you for everyone who has bought a copy of the
2013 Kenmare Chronicle. We still have them for sale at the usual

Kenmare Chronicle...Placenames Project
One of the projects that the Kenmare Chronicle wants to carry out is
the recording of place names in the Kenmare area. Old names of
houses, streets, roads and fields will be recorded together in an archive,
all we need is the information to start rolling in! This would be a great
project for the local National Schools to carry out or Macra na Feirme,
the IFA or any other group that might be interested in the locality. A
study of place names has been carried out before but not to include a
more in depth record of field names and local names of various areas.
Even within the town there are names of roads, street corners, alley
ways that have unofficial and official names to be recorded. These
names often change with old streets in the town like William Street,
Wellington Lane and Pound Street being renamed over the years.
When? Why? and How ? were these names changed would also be of
interest and worth recording. So, any help please get in contact.
The picture we show here is a well preserved map made in 1844 by
David O'Connor for the farm of John Williams of Cahir on the
banks of the Roughty. The map is to scale and measures the area of
each field with the names of each field noted. This map was probably
prepared for the Tithe Applotment Books. These maps were prepared
by commissioners appointed by law to assess land owners of one acre

or more to provide a basis for charging taxes or tithes on the holding.
They were very controversial, as the house hold tax is today, naturally
unpopular and led to what became known as the Tithe War. There are
no records available for the rural townlands for Kenmare, as these
particular records were accidently destroyed by fire.
If anyone has a copy of maps such we would really like to see them
and to copy for our archive.

A little piece of Kenmare ‘smack in the middle of Lower Manhattan’
The recently aired documentary on RTE Radio One 'Kenmare Street,
the Documentary on One' was fascinating as this brilliant review by
Ailin Quinlan on Independent.ie describes...
A new radio documentary explains how Irish Famine emigrants left
their mark in the US – in particular one Big Tim, says Ailin Quinlan
On a recent visit to New York, radio producer Yvonne Judge was
intrigued by a little street right in the heart of the Big Apple.
Why, she wondered, was a road smack in the middle of Lower
Manhattan named after a picturesque Kerry town?
Judge investigated the history of Kenmare Street, and unearthed a
turbulent story with its roots in the Great Famine as well as a bizarre
process of enforced emigration that saw large numbers of people leave
Kerry forever.
Yet for many of these peasants, the harsh voyage to America and the
struggle to survive in some of New York's worst tenements resulted in
better lives than they could ever have imagined at home.
The story begins in 1849, when William Trench, agent to Lord
Lansdowne, landlord of the Kenmare estate, took a census of his
employer's sprawling plantation.
After assessing the decimation of the local population through
disease and famine, and calculating the annual cost of keeping destitute
widows and orphans in the local workhouse, Trench suggested that
Lord Lansdowne would save money by providing famine survivors
with free passage to the US or Canada.
"Trench figured that the amount of money it cost to provide for a
person in the workhouse per year was more than a passage to the US –
which, at the time, was around five pounds," says Judge.
The scheme proved to be immensely popular with the locals.
As to the real motivation behind the scheme, opinions are mixed.
Some see it as an example of benevolent economics; others deem it to
be little more than a form of ethnic cleansing.
Although free, the passage to America cost many their health; they
endured squalid conditions on board.
The majority travelled in the freezing winter months – probably
because the winter passage was cheaper – and survived primarily on
"very basic seamen's rations", says Judge.
When they finally disembarked in New York, their ragged
appearance and poor health prompted a number of articles in the 'New
York Post'.
"To some, this could be perceived as a sort of coffin-ship passage. The
Kenmare emigrants were starving, diseased and impoverished," Judge
says.
Many of the emigrants settled in the Five Points slum, which
features in the movie 'Gangs of New York'.
"This was the poorest and cheapest area of Manhattan and a
notorious slum, to the point that Charles Dickens had written about it,"
says Judge.
The residents of Manhattan would regularly take sightseeing tours
through the area to view for themselves the debauchery, drinking and
gambling.
The influx of destitute immigrants was massive – Baxter Street,
Orange Street and Worth Street, which today comprise parts of the
Senator Mark Daly, Denis Morgan, Brian Dennehy, John O'Shea
and Jimmy Tuohy enjoying the Gangs of New York Gathering.
neighbourhoods of Chinatown and Little Italy, were crammed.
The Kenmare Irish, however, quickly found their feet. They found
employment in local tanneries and taverns, sold food on the street and
went on to get respectable jobs as house cleaners.
Their descendants gradually climbed the social ladder through what
became the fire and police departments.
Many were able to send home large amounts of money through the
Emigrant Savings Bank.
A classic example of a poor boy making good was Tim Sullivan,
known as Big Tim. The son of two Kenmare emigrants, it's believed he
was born just as his parents arrived in New York.
By the time he was seven, Sullivan had a newspaper round, which he
went on to develop into a wide-ranging distribution system.
Smart, charismatic and determined, Sullivan expanded his range of
expertise to other forms of business, including taverns, saloons,
theatres and eventually politics.
He is believed to have had connections with the criminal underworld
of gambling and prostitution, yet at the same time became renowned
for his benevolence. He never lost sight of his roots.
"He held Christmas balls for the Irish poor, where food was plentiful
and free shoes were distributed, while at the same time making friends
with all local ethnic groups," says Judge.
Needless to say, his popularity grew, and, when he decided to enter
politics, he had an army of willing supporters, resulting in his election
to the US Congress in the early 1900s.
A prominent businessman and a man of great influence locally,
Sullivan supported the bill obliging citizens to show their firearms or
weaponry in public and he also campaigned for women's suffrage.
It was during his time on New York City Council that he became
deeply involved in the construction of a new street to alleviate traffic
congestion.
In 1912, he convinced the council to name this new street Kenmare
Street, in honour of his mother.
However, the following August, Sullivan – then a married father with
two children – was hit and killed by a train in upstate new York.
His body was, for some reason, not identified for two weeks.
It was eventually brought to the original St Patrick's Cathedral, just
around the corner from Kenmare Street.
Some 20,000 mourners watched his funeral procession.
To this day, Sullivan's legacy lives on. Judge met with his great-greatgrandnephew, Tyrone Sullivan, who has visited Kenmare, and his
great-grandson Bob Wagner.
Wagner is a direct descendant of Big Tim's son – a child born to a
New York actress and adopted by an American-Italian family who,
ironically, lived only a short walk from Big Tim's offices.
The story goes, says Judge, that before being adopted, this boy was
put into an orphanage, and every six months a substantial sum of
money would arrive for his upkeep.
Sullivan's funeral brought another twist. "Records show that when
Big Tim's funeral took place, one of the altar boys was that son," says
Judge.

Kenmare Courthouse
I raised in the Dail this week the future of Killorglin, Dingle,
Caherciveen and Kenmare Courthouses. I am aware that the Minister
and this Government are reviewing their future viability. The court
service will be consulting with local interested parties including An
Garda Siochana and the Irish Prison Service. This consultation will
commence shortly and the views receive will be taken into account in
the decision making process.
Considering that this Government has already ordered the closure of
Kilgarvan and Lauragh garda stations, our courthouse could possibly
meet with the same fate. This Government’s eagerness to close down
everything is shocking and I am genuinely amazed at the politicians
who support them by remaining silent on the matter.
Armagh Visitors
I recently received a telephone call from a Mr and Mrs. Ivan Armstrong
from County Armagh. They told me that they came to Kerry on
holidays very reluctantly. Their first stop was Killarney and they then
came onto Kenmare. The reason he contacted me was to relay how
grateful he was for the exceptionally warm welcome they received in
Kenmare. Everybody that he met was very kind and welcoming to
them and when he returned to Armagh he told people in his lodge that
Kenmare was the place for all of them to go in the future on holidays.
He could not have been more complimentary of the locals and the
businesses and the great time that he had. It was truly a great story to
have relayed from a person on the other side of the country. 100%
marks to Kenmare Tourism.
Kenmare Ambulance Service
The HSE are eliminating on call from many hospitals in the HSE
region. I have continuously highlighted the fact that we have had an
excellent service out of Kenmare back over the years and I do not want
to see a situation where our service would be downgraded in any way.
Parknasilla Hotel
The confirmed news that Parknasilla Hotel has been bought by a
private investor is most welcome. The nightmare scenario for County
Kerry would have been that the hotel would be closed down so it is
great that its future has been confirmed and assured. I wish Mr. Tony
Daly and the new purchasers every good luck in the future and we look
forward to the continuation of much needed local employment being
provided in the Sneem area by the massive complex that is Parknasilla
Hotel.
Tenants of local authority houses.
This week in the Dail I raised with the Minister for Finance the issue
that local authorities must now make an allowance in their estimates to
pay the property tax on local authority houses. The Minister, for the
first time to my knowledge, publicly stated “local authority owned
properties have not been exempted from the local property tax and they
may increase rents to ensure that tenants of such housing units make a
contribution to the LPT.” This is obviously going to put further burdens
on already struggling families.
Lighting
Myself and Johnny Healy-Rae have highlighted to KCC the fact that
there is inadequate lighting on the entrance road to the hospital in
Kenmare. We will try to get this matter sorted as soon as possible.

of Black Valley National School held a celebratory
party in Brook Lane Hotel for Janice Gaine
recently to mark her 15 years of dedicated service,
as assistant teacher, in their small two teacher
school at the foot of the McGillycuddy Reeks.
In 1997 Janice Gaine came to the school to teach art and she
filled the school with life and colour.
As one past pupil put it, “I will always remember Janice for her
caring and compassionate nature. She treated each and every
student like they were her own. I'll never forget her and wish her
much happiness for the future. She was a wonderful teacher.”

January in the Garden

Schools Gardening website www.raringtogrow.com
Happy New Year everyone ! Let’s hope this coming year will be far
better in the garden than it was last year. We’ve had enough rain to
last us several seasons ! On the other hand , at least up until now it
has been a relatively mild winter with only a couple of nights frost but
his could easily change as winter is far from over. The birds don’t
seem to think so however with the mild early January weather has got
them all thinking of nest building !
Just like with the birds, now is also a good time for the gardener to be
planning ahead for the coming seasons in the garden. The vegetable
garden and the fruit area need planning now for planting up from
February onwards. Vegetable seeds are all in the shops and GARDEN
CENTRES and early sowings can be made of many vegetables under
some protective covering. Tomatoes, Peppers and Cucumbers can be
sown early Feb, but keep them in the warm. Cabbage, Lettuce, and a
range of Herbs can be sown in seed trays in polythene tunnels and
Broad Beans would be the first outside sowing in early March. Seed
Potatoes will be available in the last week of January through to April.
These can be sprouted in the warmth prior to planting to speed up
their establishment and growth...more on this next month.
In the fruit garden, cane fruits like, Raspberry, Black currants,
Loganberry etc can be planted during February and into early March,
so prepare the area by digging it over and add some well rotted farm
yard manure so the ground is ready for planting in a few weeks.
Rooted strawberry runners will also be available during February. Fruit
bushes at this time of year are available as ‘Bare root’ plants and are
more economical than container grown plants available later on in the
season. So, if you are serious about a fruit garden, plant up in
February and March and it will be cheaper. Apple, Pears, Plums, and
Cherries are also available for planting from now until early April.
As for doing some actual work !! When you look around the garden
now there is certainly plenty to work on. If we had a bit of snow it
would certainly make the garden look much tidier ! One of the main
problems, or excuses, for not starting the spring clean is the soggy
nature of the ground. The lawn is so saturated with water it turns to a
dirty jelly by just walking over it carefully, if you have to walk back and
forth a few times it really does leave a muddy track. This can cause
more trouble than the good you are trying to fix so be patient and
whenever it does dry up a bit launch an attack on tidying the place up !
1.The lawn itself will need raking to remove the last of the autumn
leaves and bits of twigs that has fallen on to it. This raking freshens
up the grass as well and gives a neat appearance straight away.
2.Old leaves and other debris should be removed from Shrubs beds
and prune back summer flowering shrubs. DO NOT PRUNE spring
flowering shrubs now as you will be cutting away their flower buds.
3.Alpines and other rockery plants should be tidied up and remove old
leaves. Remove old flower stems and dried up leaves of Herbaceous
plants as growth is about to start .
4. replant patio containers with heathers, spring bulbs and primrose or
some large Hellebores.
Once the tidy up is complete we will be ready for when it begins to
warm up a bit and spring will be here in just a few weeks and then it’s
all systems GO ! Until then Happy Gardening !

NEW CREATIVE DIRECTOR FOR KENMARE ONLINE
Hello, my name is Evan
Payne. Last month, I took
over from Peter Ringlever
as the creative force
behind The Kenmare
Network, a group of
websites showcasing
Kenmare and the
surrounding towns.
Led by Kenmare.eu, the
websites in the Kenmare Network
have been providing visitors to the
area with information and
business listings for the past
sixteen years. I bring to the table
a set of fresh eyes and a vision for
the future of the Network, having
worked for years as a web
designer, filmmaker, and business
consultant. Under my company
name of Kenmare Creative, I have
plans to update and enhance
Kenmare's online presence, just in
time for this year's Gathering and
the tourism season.
In addition to the website
network, I will be releasing a new
version of the annual Kenmare
Guide, expanding upon the
previous three years work with a
brand new layout and a
distribution network from
Killarney to Bantry and all along
the Kenmare Bay. Those
interested in listing their business
in the Guide and on the Network,
can contact me through my
website at KenmareCreative.com
Creativity has always been a
driving force in my life. I come
from a background in filmmaking,
web design, and computer repairs,
and I've built my company,
Kenmare Creative to focus on
those areas. Since I moved to
Kenmare in 2009, I've helped a
number of people around town to
take control of their online
presence.
There are so many creative
talents in the Kenmare area, and
so many creative minds running
the businesses around town.
Kenmare is, to my mind, a place
as filled with love of life as any
I've encountered in my travels
around the globe, and Kenmare
Creative is a reflection of that
spirit, based on my enthusiasm for
better communication through
beautifully presented content.
Here's looking forward to a lively
2013, and many happy returns.

Kenmare Supervalu bag-packing fundraising event.
Kenmare Kestrels are going well in all ages from Under 8’s to
Senior Men’s and Ladies teams.
Our men keep winning under the direction of coach PJ Reidy.
They lost in the Semi-Final of the St. Mary’s Castleisland Blitz
over Christmas but played exceptionally well. In the Kerry Cup
they await a date with St. Mary’s also in the semi-final. In the
league they have now won 4 and lost twice.
The Kestrels ladies continue to improve and have a number of
games in the next few weeks. Keep up to date with all our teams
on Facebook.
The Kestrels Juveniles are performing exceptionally well again
this year. The Academy is going strong thanks to both volunteer
coaches and Andrew Fitzgerald. We have two strong Under 12
girls’ teams with coaches Sinead O'Donovan and John Adams
doing a great job. U12 boys’ teams likewise are improving thanks
to PJ Reidy, Gavin Crowley and Shirley Cronin. U14 girls (also
two teams) are very competitive thanks to Shirley Cronin, Siobhan
Cronin, Ka Condon and Phyllis Crowley. U14 boys are playing
very well thanks again to coach PJ Reidy. U16 girls are having a
fantastic season, they are currently 2nd in their league table and
remain only 1 point behind the leaders. They are improving in
every game and it is showing in their results. They lost an epic
battle with Tralee Imperials in the Cup semi-final on Tuesday with
Roisin Lehane, Clodagh Quinlan, Chloe Hawker, Orla Randles and
Alanna Harrington all outstanding. Again, a big thanks to their
coach Grainne Browne. U16 boys are improving, yet lost a close
match to St. Anne’s Athea on Sunday.
The Kenmare Kestrels Basketball staff would like to thank the
entire Supervalu Kenmare Staff Team for their support of our
annual ‘Christmas Bag-Packing’ fundraising event. We would also
like to thank all of you in the community who supported us this
Christmas. Go Kestrels!
The Jack and Jill is a family friendly event and kids, buggies, grannies and
doggies (on a lead) are welcome.
Monies raised in the event for 2013 are to be donated to The Jack and Jill
Children’s Foundation . Jack and Jill Run up The Hill is open to runners and
walkers of all ages. The entry fee is €20.00 Under 16’s must be accompanied
and can enter for a minimum of €5. All entrants are asked to bring a friend
The run/walk is on a Saturday afternoon at 3pm and starts and finishes in
the Square. Entertainment & Refreshments (Waterstation and
coffee/Cookies) will be provided at the Top Of The Hill and at the finish line.
Please support this event for a good cause!
Kenmare Athletic Club will host its second annual fundraising
10km Kenmare Bridge Run on Saturday 9th February, beginning
at 2pm. Entry fee is 15 euro on the day and there are great
prizes to be won. As with last year there will be a one mile kids
charity fun run, through the golf club and Reenagross Park, just
before the main event. The whistle will blow at 1pm and this
year the money raised will be divided between Fix Crumlin, The
Brothers of Charity who do great work with autistic children in
the area, and the Kenmare Special Needs Group. All support on
the day will be more than welcome, whether you come out and
run (or walk) the route, help with marshalling or serve a cup of
tea. For more information, visit www.kenmareathleticclub.com or
e-mail Tessa at [email protected].

Kenmare Shamrocks GAA
By now we know our fate and are possibly
(hopefully!) looking forward to a date in Croke
Park. Either way it has been a fantastic period
for our footballers and hurlers (many of them
dual players) and with the Leagues getting
ready to kick off and Kerry in the McGrath
Cup Final the season is stretching out full of
promise again.
Training has started again at various grades –
much thanks to all trainers and mentors for
their commitment.
MOUTHGUARDS
It is now mandatory for all players up to and
including Minors to wear a mouthguard at
training and during matches. There are three
types of mouth guards:
Stock mouthguards are preformed and come
ready to wear. They are inexpensive and can
generally be purchased in sports shops for in or
around 5 each. However, little can be done to
adjust their fit, they are bulky, can make
breathing and talking difficult, and they provide
limited protection. Dentists do not recommend
their use, nonetheless, once they carry the CE
(European Conformity) mark they are
acceptable in terms of complying with the new
GAA Rules.
Official OPRO GAA/GPA stock
mouthguards will be available for purchasing
through your local retailers: Finnegans,
SuperValu, Centra, Lifestyle and Elverys.
Boil and bite mouthguards can also be
bought over the counter at most Sports Shops
and generally offer a better fit than stock mouth
protectors. The "boil and bite" mouthguard is
made from thermoplastic material. It is placed
in hot water to soften, then placed in the mouth
and shaped around the teeth using finger and
tongue pressure. Dentists do not recommend
their use in general. Typically these type of
mouthguards will cost in the region of 8 to 33
and again any mouthguard with the CE mark
on it in this category is sufficient to ensure
compliance with the new rule.
Official OPRO GAA/GPA boil & bite
mouthguards will be available for purchasing
through your local retailers: SuperValu, Centra,
Lifestyle and Elverys.
Custom-fitted mouthguards are individually
designed and made in a dental office or a
The New Years Epic run
This was the second year that the club
have held The News Years Epic Run
(new name as 10 miles of Hell was
putting some people off !!). With
numbers of participants doubling to 22,
it proved that this intimidating course
was not dissuading brave souls from
signing up. Conditions were wet n
windy, just as we hoped. Cork Tri’s
Peter O Gorman set off at a blistering
pace and soon split the lead group. He
maintained this lead to come home a
comfortable winner of the now 11.5mile
new route in 1hr 28min. Kenmare Tri’s
Pawel Glowczyk was second and was
closely followed by Cork’s Sean Finn
who may have placed higher but for
going off route earlier. The return of
Ellen Vitting competing for Kenmare
was great to see and she narrowly
pushed past Maureen Harrington in the
last one hundred meters to claim first
women home. Lousie Keane of the
famous triathlon family in Cork placed
third. A big thanks to The Bay Leisure
Club for providing showers to the
athletes afterwards. James from Jam
once again provided an amazing spread
including a large chocolate birthday
cake for Robert. Once again he kindly
sponsored this and his continued
support of the club is greatly
appreciated. A big thanks to all who
took place especially our friends from
Cork Triathlon Club.
New Years day swim
30 plus swimmers plunged into the near
freezing waters of Killmackilogue
harbour in the now traditional new years
day swim. Wet suits were abandoned for
the day and only the very hardy were
able to stay more than a minute or so in
the water. Luckily Helen’s pub was
close at hand, and hot drinks and food
were gladly consumed. Thanks very
much to Helen and her staff for
accommodating us and providing hot
showers and changing facilities.

professional laboratory based on your dentist's
instructions. These will not just offer the best
protection against dental and oral injury but
they should not affect performance i.e.
breathing and speech should be relatively
unaffected particularly if these have been worn
regularly.
First, your dentist will make an impression
of your teeth and a mouthguard is then molded
over the model using a special material. Due to
the use of the special material and because of
the extra time and work involved, this custommade mouthguard is more expensive than the
other types, but it provides the most comfort
and protection.
Official OPRO custom fitted mouthguards
will be available from a network of dentists.
Coiste na nOg: The AGM for Coiste na nOg
will be on Friday 1st February at nine o'clock
in the Club House. The board are looking for

road spins on a Sunday morning. These
trips have been great fun and anybody
who took part will testify to the great
work out and the trill of descending and
ascending on less than perfect ground
conditions. The bike skill necessary to
master the art of mountain biking were
a lesson to us all and hopefully with a
few more of these trips it will improve
our overall bike handling. Thanks to

Rain, rain everywhere!!
The last month saw the fixtures coming through
thick and fast for Inter Kenmare. Sadly, with the
Irish weather being as it is, a fixture is never a
sure thing. Sure enough, several games had to
be cancelled for Inter both at home and away.
Results on those games that did go ahead are
below along with a selection of match reports.
For up to date fixtures and reports please visit
our website at www.interkenmare.com.

Classic FC 2 - 2 Inter Kenmare
Inter A’s travelled to Tralee to face Classic FC
and came away with a good 2 - 2 draw. Inter fell
behind early to an unlucky goal when a cross
went in off the post. Soon after Sean Murphy
scored from a free kick bringing the score to a
goal a piece. Classic then scored their second
goal. Without wasting time, Inter had the
opportunity to equalise from the penalty spot
after Dan Cahalane was brought down by the
keeper but the kick was saved and the rebound
went over the bar.
Inter Kenmare were under pressure in the
second half but good defending kept Classic out
and with minutes remaining Keith Harrington
scored to make it 2 - 2.
By Donal Casey
Crossmahon Ladies 0 - 9 Inter Ladies - 0 - 12
on aggregate
Inter Kenmare travelled to Crossmahon for the
second leg of the first round of the West Cork
Cup. Kenmare ladies were much too strong for
Crossmahon on this occasion and were never
put under any pressure from the Crossmahon
team. Good team performance and some
excellent passing moves lead to Kenmare’s 9-0
win. Scores for Kenmare, Laura O’Sullivan 2,
Majella
O’Sullivan
2,
Michelle
O’Sullivan(Casey) 2, Melissa Finn 2 and Katie
O’Shea 1.
Inter Kenmare are now through to the semi final
of the cup and must await some other results
before they find out who their opponents will be,
they are also currently top of the league after 6
games.

John Crowley got sent off for an accidental
handball. Listowel converted the penalty. Then
Denis Cronin took on the whole back line of
Listowel and got a cracker of a goal. Following
this, Daniel Taylor was brought down going
through and converted a penalty for Kenmare.

In the second half, Listowel kept up the

game with lovely soccer played. Johnny
Sullivan Casey made some great saves in goal.
Simon O’Shea, Chris Sullivan Casey, John
Crowley and Luke O’Sullivan were all very
strong in defence. Man of the match Denis
Cronin along with Sean Casey, Daniel Taylor,
Darragh Twomey and Tom (P.O) O’Sullivan
made great runs and passes in midfield. Joey
Quinn made his debut up front and was causing
great upset to Listowel defence all day.
Paty Murphy came on for Quinn up front. James
Jones took over Sean Casey’s role in tackling at
midfield. Despite defeat on the day, Coach
Caroline Taylor was very happy with the team’s
performance. They never gave up and battled
to the end; great football and skill displayed.
Inter should be proud of their efforts.

Inter Kenmare 2 - 3 Castleisland
The game concluded 2-3 in favour of
Castleisland. However, Inter had started the
game very brightly with Conor Maye in the
centre forward berth working hard to escape his
markers and link with midfield. Killian
Harrington and Paudie O’Sullivan were
providing width in the wide forward positions
and Kenmare were constructing some
purposeful moves that should have proved
profitable.
Castleisland began to get to more involved,
although their main attacking ploy seem to be to
position several players in clear offside
positions in the hope the referee would allow at
least one move in this manner to prosper. At
one stage they had 5 players in an off side
position and still berated the referee for calling
offside. At least one of their goals resulted in a
player scoring from an off side position; the
referees need to be more vigilant or the game
becomes a mockery. Eventually Kenmare made
the breakthrough after a clearance from
defence was expertly nodded on by Fintan
Kennedy and Conor Maye, playing intelligently
with his back to goal lost his marker and latched
onto the ball. Keeping his composure he rolled
the ball back to Josh Holland who deftly
chipped the keeper from 25 yards out. The half
finished a merited 1 nil to Inter.
Castleisland stared the second half in
determined fashion, but Inter withstood the
storm and once again took control of the match
and looked the most likely to score. Kenmare
had a certain goal disallowed that the referee
adjudged not to have crossed the line.
Unfortunately, Castleisland scored from a rare
break away and then notched a second to make
it 2-1. Undaunted, Kenmare battled on and
Conor Maye grabbed the equaliser and
Kenmare looked set fare to go on and win the
game. But the old adage that teams are most
vulnerable after they have scored came back to
haunt Inter as they conceded an exceptionally
soft goal straight from the kick off. Kenmare
battled bravely but could not get that elusive
goal to equalise. The lads can take plenty of
positives from the game played on a sticky
pitch, but they must concentrate for the full
duration.

Slurry Kat - Revolutionary New System
Umbilical Slurry Spreading
It could be argued that dragging a heavy
tank full of slurry across a field is not a
good idea, even given the best of ground
conditions.
The umbilical application system has numerous
advantages over traditional tanker based application
methods, the main ones being;
• Drastic Reduction in Field Soil Comp Action
No heavy tanker unit is driven onto the field.
• Eliminates Damage of Field Access Area
Applicator unit is driven in and out of the field just once.
• Eliminates Mud Carriage onto Field Access
Roads
Applicator unit stays in the field until the field is finished.
• Can be Spread in Very Wet Conditions
• More suitable for higher ground than the
traditional tanker and can cover harder to
reach areas

Poor diet, stress, caffeine,
over-processed foods etc. can
all lead to less than tip-top
health. Aloe Vera, with its
wealth of essential nutrients,
can help redress the balance.
Aloe works on our immune
system, replenishing the
nutrients as required.
Aloe Vera contains amazing
healing properties such as
inhibiting pain and reducing
inflammation. It is excellent as
a coagulant, cicatrisant, cell
regenerator, digestor,
detoxifier, rehydrator, is
nutritious and also contains 17
of the 23 amino acids required
by the body.
