There was a prayer service for all grandparents and children. The first service was for Juniors to 2nd class and the second was for 3rd to 6th class. Father Francis blessed us all and there was a huge turnout with tea and scones after it. Bishop Visit Pictured with Mrs O’Connor’s First Communion class are Bishop Ray Browne and Fr. Mobile Phone Plea. Please drop in any old mobile phones you can spare, as we need 400 in order to get a defibrillator for the school. We’re half way there at 194 phones now. Retreat by Aoife Kelliher We have being preparing for confirmation for a while now and we went to a retreat centre in Ardfert and we learned a new dance called ‘Come Holy Spirit.’ It was really fun. We went to practise on the 19/3/14 how to do it and we are going to Mc Donald’s after our confirmation on the Friday the 28/3/14 . We are all very excited. Hurricane Darwin by Melanie Smith On Wednesday the 12th of February students from our school were swimming at the Aquadome when a freak storm hit the country. We were evacuated back to school. Infants had to be brought into the main building in case the prefabs blew apart. There were teachers and parents trying to keep us safe luckily no one got hurt. Thanks to the storm , the school got off homework. Bag 2 school by Melanie Smith On the 27th of May from 1:30 to 2:30pm we will be holding a Bag 2 School day to raise money for our school and the Laurelynn Foundation. Please start collecting 2nd quality clothes, shoes (tied together), towels, curtains, bags and soft toys .They will be much appreciated. Please put them in a Bag 2 School bag and return to the school by the date shown - thank you. Basketball Well done to the basketball team, trained by Miss Sarah Dinan who played on Saturday 29th March against O Breannain, Presentation and Balloonagh in an inter-school competition. Coach Miss Dinan said the girls improved with every match throughout the day. Thanks to Miss Olivia O’Shea who came to help and of course to Miss Dinan who voluntarily trains the girls every week after school. Scór by Aislinn Quirke Our musical team consisted of Ellen Wallace, Katie Moriarty, Fergal O’ Brien, Conor Crowley and Tomas O’Sullivan. In the balled team there were James O Sullivan and two more people from Derryquay. Both of these groups came 2nd. This was a great achievement for our first attempt at Scor. Thanks to Mary O’Sullivan and James Allman for all their hard work in preparing the groups. Parent’s Association Thanks to Cathy Hogan for the photo. This term we are trying to raise money in order to purchase 30 lap-tops for the school, to enable them to be used in classes by all students. I.T. is an area that the WSE encouraged us to address. We are trying to raise €20,000 for this. We realise it is a huge ask, but guarantee it will be our only fundraiser until the next school year. If we all make the effort to sell the tickets, we just might do it. Please help us to make it from €0-€20K by May, thank you, Hélène Kavanagh. Pancake Tuesday Thanks to Maura and Jimmy O’Donnell, Mary Wallace and Maeve Moran who cooked pancakes for the nations on Tuesday 3rd March. Jimmy flipped two at a time to the delight of all. Some children got hands on experience of cracking eggs and whisking the ingredients. There was a sticky situation in the hall (on the floor) afterwards but it was well worth it! Thank you to student Jaden Efegbare, aged 10 who prepared and edited this entire newsletter. Pizza Day by Aislinn Quirke. Pizza day was held on the 30th of January. We got pizza and chips for being good for the inspectors during the W.S.E. in January. A big thanks to New Yorkers who gave us pizza, chips and chicken nuggets for a great deal. It was delicious! Our Trip to the Aquadome by Sorcha O’Donoghue, Greenschool Committee member. On the 24th of February the green school committee went to the Aquadome and got a guided tour led by Neil Harkin. Like Blennerville School the Aquadome are trying to reduce their energy bills through environmentally friendly means. Neil’s talk was very interesting and he showed us all the new ways that the Aquadome are saving energy. He showed us how simple things like changing to energy efficient light bulbs and by having mixer taps and sensor lights in the bathrooms, can save energy and reduce bills. On a bigger scale they have changed their oil boilers to new efficient gas burners. This has reduced their energy bills and is much better for the environment. It was very interesting to see. A big thank you to Neil Harkin for making this possible and to Miss Brassil and Miss Dinan for bringing us. Message from Master I would like to express a huge thanks to students, families, teachers, SNAs, Noreen, the Parent’s Association and the Board of Management for their co-operation in making our Whole School Evaluation such a success. I wish you all a very happy Easter and encourage you to help us by selling tickets for the €O-20K fundraiser over the break. Thank you and have a lovely break everyone, Mr. O’Sullivan.
