Is there life after 50 Pantos? Oh yes there is. I was wondering when
rehearsals came around would enough people turn up, would the enthusiasm
for Panto still be there? Imagine my surprise and delight when 30 people
turned up! We have the biggest numbers ever in our choruses and judging by
the enthusiasm, dedication and record attendances at rehearsals we should
have a cracking show. There is an unusual beginning to the show which leads
us into our subtitle ‘The Dame, the Cat, the Witch and the Wardrobe’. What
goes on behind a costume designer’s wardrobe? Surprise after surprise. Will I
tell you? Oh no I won’t.
Martin Hurley returns as Musical Director this year and has put in trojan work
with all our musical items, which are enhanced by the imaginative
choreography of Jackie O’Mahony. Nice to see that they take their love of the
stage seriously, they got engaged on Christmas Day. Not to be outdone ,Edel
Conway, chorus member, principal lady, and now Child Officer ,got engaged to
Kevin Moriarty who makes his panto debut this year. Congrats also to Caroline
Hennessey, who got married in October and Kieran Flynn who got married in
January. Romance is in the air, both on and off stage.
One of the characters in the story is the Wardrobe Mistress. For over
thirty years Anne has made an unbelievable array of sumptuous
costumes for our stage. She has again turned up trumps, even
though she officially retired after the 50th!! I
had hoped she would have played the
part on stage but pressure of costume
work prevented her attending
rehearsals but I’m sure Edel Conway
will well handle the frustrations and
joys of the Wardrobe
Mistress.
We had some sad deaths in our Panto Group this year. When we last did Puss in
Boots in 1977, the late Patsy Cronin played the part of Pog, with his renowned stage
comic partner, Gearoid O Sullivan as Nog. Patsy and Gearoid had a huge reputation
as very fine comics.
It’s hard to believe that it’s 30 years since they last appeared together in Panto.
The sudden death of Sarah Mangan cast a huge air of gloom among the Panto
Group. She had excelled as a chorus member and later played some memorable
parts like The Dormouse in Alice, Wendy in Peter Pan and later was excellent in her
comic roles. We miss you Sarah.
We also had the sad deaths of Áine Ní Ghabhann, Kathleen Chub O’Connor,
Alyson Sheppard and the recent tragic death of Susan Von der Geest. Our
sympathies to all the families. Their spirits will remain with us on stage.
It would not be possible to stage a successful pantomime without the incredible
amount of voluntary cooperation from a huge section of the Community. To all, from
the panto committee, to the performers, back stage, front of house, make up,
costume makers, children and minders, lighting, musicians, the CYMS, and many
many more ,including you the audience, I can only say a heartful thanks. May the
Panto spirit survive in Killorglin for at least another 50 years.
