Motto: Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. R = Reporters K = Miss Kannu R: Hello, Miss Kannu, thank you for doing this interview with us. R: Why did you choose Hong Kong to work? K:Well, I worked in Australia for 10 years before I finally decided Student reporters Yuen Sze to return to Singapore to spend Ying (2D) and Lam Kit Ching some quality time with my (2D) with Miss Kannu family. I was only planning to stay for 6 months before returning to Melbourne but I ended up living in Singapore for 3.5 years, reconnecting with my family and friends. Then, almost by accident, a few close friends and former HK students who I taught in Australia told me about the NET program and I thought I would give it a go and here I still am after 7 years. R: Do you miss your family? K:Of course I do. On weekends, it is especially hard. I have to keep myself very busy so that I don’t miss them. Thanks to SKYPE, we are well connected. R: Which Hong Kong local food do you like most? K:I have tried some Hong Kong food but I think your desserts are the best! I love mango pudding and mango pancakes. Yummm… R: Who is your mentor? What have you learnt from him/her? K:I think the person who has had the biggest influence in my life is my father. He was one of my best friends and confidant. It’s strange to say your father is your best friend but he was. We enjoyed each other’s company and could talk for hours about any topic under the sun. Unfortunately, he passed away in January this year. He was an aircraft engineer with Singapore Airlines and he taught me to live my life with love in my heart. Have you noticed my paper aeroplane tattoo on my foot? That is a memorial tattoo in honour of my father. He will always walk with me. R:Why do you have a tattoo of a chilli and paw print on your right hand? K:So you noticed? That is also a memorial tattoo. It represents my dog Chillie who passed away in August 2012 of old age. He was nearly 16 years old and has travelled with me from Australia to Singapore and then to Hong Kong. He was my ‘son’ and I miss my little Chillie boy every single day. R: D o you have any brothers and sisters? K: Yes, I have an older brother and he has two children, Sasha who is 17 and Dylan who will be 10 in November. They Making muffins with all live in Singapore and her former students. my mother lives with my brother now, after my father passed away. R: What do you think about students at our school? K:I absolutely love the students in this school. I used to teach in a Band 3 boy’s secondary school for 6 years. It was a daily uphill battle at my former school. Although I loved teaching there, I did not want to burn out. So, even though I miss my former crazy students, I think students in LKY are all angels like the two of you. R: Were you a good student when you were in secondary school? K:I think I was. I preferred sports to studying though. In Singapore, we study between 7 to 9 subjects and must do at least 1 extracurricular activity. It is very stressful and very competitive but I did enjoy my school life and am still very close friends with many of my former classmates. R: What is your teaching philosophy? K:Tough love. I am very old school. So I believe being tough on my students works. I just hope they can see how much I love them and want the best for them. R: What do you usually do in your free time? K:I enjoy cooking and having friends over at my home on weekends. I have such great friends in HK. I know they come over most of the time to make sure I am Okay. The other thing I like is driving around Hong Kong outside the main city area, discovering nice little spots. Card making and scrapbooking are also things I enjoy doing. R: Can you share a life lesson with us? K:I’ve had a couple of horrific years that you just cannot imagine. When I nearly lost all hope in humanity, I realized I was surrounded by LOVE. Darkness is all around, but so is light. Find it! Favourite and last photo taken with her son, Chillie and her dad. ◇ Live simply. Don’t complicate life with the small stuff. ◇ Smile from your heart. ◇ Be of service to others. ◇ Open your mind to new and fabulous things. ◇ Live it, don’t just think it. Green Radiance committee members Purple House From Left to right: Treasurer – Shek Kai Lam (5D), Chairman – Wong Shuk Kwan (5D), Vice Chairman –Li Chen Long (5C) , Secretary – Lo Ka Ki (5D) Purple Hunter is the Purple House Committee this year. I am the Chairman Wong Shuk Kwan from 5D. This year, I hope I can make some contributions to Purple House. I will organize more activities for all members to participate because many students have some pressure when studying and they may feel unhappy sometimes. Therefore, I think more activities can help them feel more relaxed. Finally, I will do my best. I hope all members have many good memories this year. Blue House Hello, I am Ally Chau, the Chairman of Blue House Committee ‘Smurfs’ this year. Smurfs are a kind of blue spirit. They are helpful, friendly and united. Each letter in ‘SMURFS’ has a special meaning: S for smart; M for marvellous; U for unique; R for radiant; F for fabulous; the last S means superb. I am so glad that I can be the captain of Blue House this year. It is challenging for me as I did not have any experience before. But I will try my best to serve our members and listen to our members. In the future, we will hold different events for all members. I hope that they can integrate to Smurfs big family and give us support! Smurfs committee members Red House Phoenix committee members Hi, everyone. I am Chan Mei Yee, the Chairman of Red House. The Phoenix represents Red House as it means peaceful, strong and the most elegant bird in the ancient myths of China. People think that a phoenix can bring harmony. So, we want to enhance the interaction between our members through joining our diversified activities. Meanwhile, our main target this year is to attain the house cup. I hope that all members are eager to contribute to the red house. Last but not least, we will fulfill our promise to make sure that all members can enjoy their school life and their advice would be listened to. Student Union - Circle Why did we want to be the committee members of the Student Union? In the beginning, we just wanted to serve our schoolmates. Although we are not the best students and have limited time for preparation, we are really willing to serve our schoolmates. When we were elected, we found that to run a student union is not that easy, and we still have to face lots of different challenges in the future. Also, we have to balance between our studies and the work of a student union member. But we will not give up and we will keep all our promises. In the coming year, our team will pay the greatest effort for you and you will see that we will do our best to deliver. Fortunately, some friends of mine in form one are now in the same class. They are my good friends and they help me a lot. Our new form teacher, Mr. Chin, is nice and sometimes funny. He teaches us LAC and English. Although I didn’t know him last year, I will start to know more about him this year. Actually I am not sure whether our class will be united or not, but I am sure that we all want to be the best class. I still have lots of questions about my class, but I know I will soon get the answers. I feel happy in this class because something interesting always happens during classes which makes us laugh. I really hope that our classmates can be more confident because ‘Unity is strength’, so we can really be the best class! Making suggestions to the Title Characters of ‘Asian Spiderman’ Chan Wing Yue (4A) Dear Gary, How are you? I know that you are going to make a new film ‘Asian Spiderman’. I think Louis Koo and Angelababy are not suitable to be the actor and actress of ‘Asian Spiderman’. I suggest Andy Lau should play the superhero and Tavia Yeung the role of his girlfriend. I think Louis Koo is less suitable to play the Spiderman. Andy Lau is more experienced in acting than Louis Koo. Andy Lau is 52 years old but he is still charming and handsome. He is a renowned actor and has starred in many films. He has won the best actor at Hong Kong Films Awards, Golden Bauhinia Awards, Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards and Golden Horse Awards. As plain as a pikestaff, his acting is more professional than Louis Koo’s. Owing to his friendliness and wonderful performances, he is famous among middle-aged people, ladies and the elderly in Asia. I think more people in Asia know Andy Lau than Louis Koo. What’s more, Andy Lau knows some kungfu so he can act in fighting scenes. Thus, he is flawless for the role of Spiderman. Many people choose Angelababy as the role of Spiderman’s girlfriend. However, what I think is poles apart. I would rather choose Tavia Yeung. She is gorgeous and attractive. She is shorter and younger than Andy Lau. She has acted in many TVB series so she has some experience in acting. Her acting is brilliant beyond words as you may know that she won the best actress in 2012 TVB Anniversary Awards. However, Angelababy has not won any prizes related to acting so she is not suitable to be the main actress in ‘Asian Spiderman’. Tavia Yeung is a little bit older than Angelababy, though, she is more popular and well-known in Hong Kong, mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia. She is popular among teenagers and adults too. She is friendly and vivacious, so I think she is suitable to play the role of Spiderman’s girlfriend. In conclusion, Louis Koo and Angelababy are not suitable to play the role of superhero and his girlfriend. Andy Lau and Tavia Yeung are popular and have superb acting. They are more suitable to act as Spiderman and his girlfriend. If you approve my suggestions, it will be my pleasure. I hope my suggestions can help you.
