Lynn Goldsmith Symphonia Domestica Having recently returned from Japan where he conducted the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Stefan Blunier’s schedule includes guest conducting engagements with the Stuttgart Philharmonic (Strauss Alpensinfonie), RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Münchner Rundfunkorchester and the Orchestre National de Bruxelles. As Chief Conductor of the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn, Blunier opens the season with Strauss Symphonia Domestica (19 Sep). Doric String Quartet première performances of John Adams “Absolute Jest” in Vienna & Amsterdam 2014/15 sees the Doric String Quartet championing Adams’ 2011 work for string quartet and orchestra “Absolute Jest”. The Quartet performs with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra/Markus Stenz (6 & 7 Nov), gives the Dutch première at the Concertgebouw with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic/Stenz (28 March) and the Austrian première with John Adams conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the Konzerthaus (13 & 15 March). George Garnier In February the Doric joins forces with Andreas Haefliger for six concerts of the Shostakovich Piano Quintet, including performances at Wigmore Hall and Concertgebouw. Further afield the Quartet tours North America and the Far East (Hong Kong and Taiwan). October sees the long-awaited released of Haydn’s Op 20 Quartets on Chandos, their first release with viola Hélène Clément. Steven Osborne “Electric, blazing pianism” Robert Spano in Helsinki The New York Times Steven Osborne’s performances of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto and Schubert recital at the Lincoln Center Mostly Mozart Festival received a glowing review in The New York Times. He returns to Lincoln Center in February for a recital as part of his North American tour which also includes Spivey Hall Atlanta and Vancouver Recital Society. Benjamin Ealovega Admired for her wide-ranging interests and exploration of lesser-known repertoire, Hanslip’s recent and forthcoming performances include the Delius Violin Concerto, Vaughan Williams Concerto Accademico, Karl Goldmark Concerto No 1, Adams Dharma at Big Sur, Ginastera Violin Concerto Op 30 and Fairouz Violin Concerto ‘Al-Andalus’. Stefan Blunier conducts Strauss and recitals in Tokyo and London Chloë Hanslip’s return to the Wigmore Hall in September is followed by a recital tour with Danny Driver and a solo recital in Tokyo which includes John Tavener’s “My Gaze is Ever Upon You” for violin and tape. Concerto engagements include the Toyko Metropolitan Symphony/ Brabbins, Bremen Philharmonic/Agrest, Duisburg Philharmonic/Bellincampi and the Bern Symphony Orchestra/Venzago. This autumn sees the release of Lise de la Salle’s seventh CD for Naïve featuring works by Schumann (Kinderszenen, Abegg Variations, Fantasie). Alpensinfonie Chlo Ë Hanslip Having closed his second season as Music Director of the Aspen Music Festival, Robert Spano returns to Finland to conduct Shostakovich & Rachmaninov Symphony No 2 with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Benjamin Ealovega Following his highly admired residency at Wigmore Hall, 2014/15 follows with a Focus on Steven Osborne at De Singel in Antwerp. The series showcases him in two solo recitals, a performance with duo partner Alban Gerhardt and concerts with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic/de Waart in Beethoven Piano Concerto No 2. Other engagements include Brahms Piano Concerto No 1 with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic/Oramo, Britten Piano Concerto with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony/Brabbins and Mozart K595 with the Australian Chamber Orchestra in London, Birmingham and Dublin (2, 4 & 5 October). His most recent release, Prokofiev Violin Sonatas with Alina Ibragimova was CD of the Month in both Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine. With the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, where he has been Music Director since 2001, Spano continues to combine contemporary works with established repertoire. The season includes world premières by Atlanta School Angela Morriss of Composers, Christopher Theofanidis and Michael Gandolfi, and a third by Jonathan Leshnoff. Programmes also include Avner Dorman’s Percussion Concerto “Spices, Perfumes, Toxins!”, Richard Prior Symphony No 3 and Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony, his recording of which won an earlier Grammy Award. Elsewhere in the US Spano conducts Brahms Requiem with the Milwaukee Symphony and Magic Flute with Houston Grand Opera. He returns to Carnegie Hall in December for the New York première of Steven Stucky’s opera The Classical Style, based on the book by Charles Rosen, which Spano premiered in June at the Ojai Festival. Augustin Hadelich Alban Gerhardt Augustin Hadelich is featured as Artist-inResidence with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in the 2014/15 season which sees him performing concertos by Sibelius, Mozart and Mendelssohn at the Concertgebouw. Alban Gerhardt will be Artist-in-Focus at the Wigmore Hall this season, a residency which includes recitals with Steven Osborne and Cécile Licad and chamber music with friends Brett Dean and Baiba Skride. He makes his Wigmore Hall debut in an evening recital with Charles Owen (4 Oct) whilst other upcoming European engagements bring him to the BBC Symphony, Danish National Symphony, SWR Stuttgart Radio and Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestras. His return to Japan this season includes performances of Tchaikovsky Concerto with the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra and Sibelius Concerto with the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Two performances at the Edinburgh Festival Sim Canetty-Clarke are followed by concerto engagements with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra/Dutoit, City of Birmingham Symphony/Gardner, Deutsche Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, Oslo Philharmonic, Orquestra Sinfonica di Milano, Taiwan National Symphony/Shao-Chia Lü, Düsseldorfer Symphoniker and the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música/König. Artist-in-Residence in Amsterdam Wigmore Hall residency His latest CD release features Unsuk Chin’s Cello Concerto on Deutsche Grammophon with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra/Chung: “the superb Alban Gerhardt.” The Guardian Rosalie O’Connor Hadelich’s latest CD release featuring Violin Concertos by Sibelius and Adès with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under Hannu Lintu has received outstanding reviews: “one of the most convincing and involving versions.” BBC Music Magazine ***** Miguel Harth-Bedoya Brahms cycle in Oslo Miguel Harth-Bedoya begins his second season as Principal Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra recording Grieg for Harmonia Mundi. Concert programmes include a cycle of Brahms symphonies and works by Kodály, Tchaikovsky and Dvořák. Eugene Tzigane Die Zauberflöte in Hamburg Following his performances of Fledermaus at Frankfurt Opera, Eugene Tzigane conducts Achim Freyer’s production of Die Zauberflöte at Hamburg Staatsoper (23, 29 Nov, 3 Dec). February sees the first of three return invitations to Finland. He conducts the Lahti Symphony in Mozart, Bruch and Strauss Tod und Verklärung, Kymi Sinfonietta and Tampere Philharmonic. In the US he returns to the New Jersey Symphony (Strauss, Schubert, Mozart) and conducts the Columbus Symphony (Dvořák, Copland) and North Carolina Symphony Orchestras (Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Strauss). Bell Soto A regular guest to the Orquestra Nacional de España, Miguel Harth-Bedoya opens the season conducting four concerts in works by Bernat Vivancos, Bruch Violin Concerto with Anne-Sophie Mutter and Dvořák Symphony No 9. Elsewhere guest engagements take him to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, Malmö Symphony and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestras. Lisa-Marie Mazzucco Tzigane’s season begins with his UK debut conducting the Orchestra of Opera North in works by Haydn, Mozart and Sibelius Symphony No 3 (26 Sep). Carlos Kalmar from Bach to Berio Admired for his innovative programming, Kalmar’s third season as Music Director of the RTVE Symphony Orchestra in Madrid offers combinations of works by Ives and Britten, Turina and Mahler and a programme of Britten, Mozart, Ligeti and Strauss. Entering his 12th season as Music Director of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra his programmes include works by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev Cinderella Suite, Mahler Symphony No 5, Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition and Orff Carmina Burana. As a guest conductor he appears with the Fort Worth Symphony (Britten, Beethoven and Ravel) and Milwaukee Symphony (Marc Neikrug Bassoon Concerto, Gunther Schuller Seven Studies on themes of Paul Klee, Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition). He journeys to the Far East to perform Ibert with the Seoul Philharmonic/Mikko Frank and appears with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland in Huw Watkins’ Concerto which he premiered with the London Symphony Orchestra in February. Recital engagements with regular duo partner James Baillieu take him to Aberdeen, Leicester and the Louvre in Paris where the programme includes works by Messiaen, Bartók, Poulenc and Schubert. Kaupo Kikkas Vienna Piano Trio tours the UK With a staple diet of Haydn, Mozart and Brahms the Vienna Piano Trio tours the length and breadth of the UK during the course of the season with performances in Leeds, Manchester, Brighton, Bradford, Wales and London. Coupled with its companion piece, Mozart Concerto No 5, Jackiw performed with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie under Matthias Lisa-Marie Mazzucco Pintscher: “Somehow he combines the best of all worlds … succeeding equally in contemporary music and Mozart... The young violinist shows signs of being a true prodigy.” Morganweb. Jackiw gives the US première in December with ProMusica Chamber Orchestra/David Danzmayer. The American violinist returns to Europe for performances with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia/Gamba (Bruch Scottish Fantasy), Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg/Venzago (Bach) and Dortmund Philharmonic/Kamioka (Mendelssohn). In the southern hemisphere he tours with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Junichi Hirokami (Mendelssohn). Gunter Glucklich Back in Europe he conducts his sixth season with the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música in programmes featuring Bruckner Symphony No 5, Bartók Miraculous Mandarin and Mahler Symphony No 4. Elsewhere his guest conducting engagements bring him to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Real Filharmonía Galicia. In Luxembourg he celebrates the 25th anniversary season with the Solistes Européens Luxembourg where he continues as Music Director. Anoushka S h a n k a r Celebrating Tagore at the Globe Theatre His recording of Vivaldi Mandolin and Lute Concertos for Deutsche Grammophon is due for release in early 2015 when he gives an extensive tour of the USA with the Venice Baroque Orchestra including performances at Carnegie Hall, Calgary and Boston. Avital performs Vivaldi with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra at the Cartagena Festival in Colombia (7 Jan) and with the Geneva Camerata in France, Jean-Baptiste Millot Italy and Switzerland. Other concerto engagements include the Hamburger Symphoniker (Hummel Mandolin Concerto in G) and Wroclaw Philharmonic (Avner Dorman Mandolin Concerto). Besides concerto appearances, Avital continues touring his acclaimed programme “Between Worlds” with Ksenija Sidorova (accordion) and Itamar Doari (percussion) which includes works by Bartók, Bloch and de Falla alongside Eastern Mediterranean folk-music. Recent performances at the Salzburg Festival, Vienna Konzerthaus and in Paris continue to Italy, Germany, UK and South America. CHRISTOPH KŐNIG debut at Aspen Christoph König’s burgeoning reputation in the USA brought him to the Aspen Music Festival in July for a performance of works by Brahms, Berlioz and Prokofiev. Grammy-nominated mandolinist Avi Avital makes his debut at the Wigmore Hall in a solo recital (16 Oct) and returns to London for a performance with Mahan Esfahani at the Globe Theatre (7 Dec). Marie Julliard Drawing on Indian poet and polymath Rabindranath Tagore’s wide-ranging influence, Anoushka Shankar presents a series of concerts in the Globe Theatre’s candelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse with guest artists Soumik Datta, Tanmoy Bose and Manu Delago (27, 28, 29 Sept, 4 Oct). A tour with her classical ensemble in the autumn takes her to Budapest, Istanbul, Sweden and the Middle East. She performs in a special “India” day at the opening of the Philharmonie de Paris with special guest Toumani Diabaté (31 Jan). Ronald Brautiga m Beethoven Piano Concertgebouw Concerto cycle at Across the season Brautigam is performing the cycle of Beethoven Piano Concertos at the Concertgebouw with five different orchestras. Beethoven Concerto No 5 with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic is followed by No 2 with the Wiener Akademie as part of a European tour (on fortepiano), No 4 with the Residentie Orkest, No 3 with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and finishes with No 1 with the Kölner Akademie (also on fortepiano). His record label, BIS, is releasing a boxed set of his recent recording of the complete Beethoven sonatas on fortepiano. Such was the chemistry between orchestra, conductor and soloist last season that the Bournemouth Symphony, Kees Bakels and Ronald Brautigam are uniting again in December, this time to perform Mendelssohn Piano Concerto No 1. Marco Borggreve Sitkovetsky Trio launches Wigmore Live disc Jean-Philippe Collard “A force to be reckoned with” IRR Jean-Philippe Collard’s new record of Chopin Preludes and Piano Sonata has been internationally acclaimed: “At the age of 65 he retains his technical finesse and the inclusive sliver-toned clarity of his earlier recordings.” Gramophone Forthcoming highlights include a tour of Japan with recitals in Tokyo and Nagoya featuring his signature repertoire of works by Chopin, Fauré and Ravel. Concerto performances include Beethoven Piano Concerto No 4 with the Japan Century Symphony Orchestra and Sendai Philharmonic conducted by Kazuhiro Koizumi. The Sitkovetsky Trio begins the new season with a return to the Wigmore Hall for the launch of their ‘Wigmore Live’ recording of Schubert Piano Trio in Eb D929 and Brahms Piano Trio in C minor. Other highlights over the autumn include performances in Germany, The Netherlands and a return to the Bath Mozartfest. Benjamin Ealovega Earlier this year the Trio collected rave reviews for their debut tour of Australia with the Sydney Morning Herald declaring: “it is inspiring to hear such engagement and instrumental mastery from players at the outset of their careers”.
