Seven Financial Wisdom Keys To Recession Proof Your Life
Get Thee Behind Me Recession
By Shaun Maddox
Special to The Answer
1. Take responsibility for your
life.
Your life right at this moment,
is the sum total of all the decisions
and choices you have made in the
past up to this point. If you are not
happy with where your life is right
now then spend some time reflecting on what types of decisions you
have been making in your life. You
may feel that in order for your life
to change, others are going to have
to change. The sad fact however is
that the only person you truly have
any power over changing is yourself. I promise you that when you
start taking responsibility for your
own success you will begin to notice a power within yourself beginning to surface which will allow
you to accomplish whatever you set
out to achieve in your life.
2. Let go of your past.
Unfortunately you have no control over what has happened in your
past. Your present has already been
determined by your actions and decisions of the past. The only thing
you can do at this point is focus on
where you want your life to end up
and how you intend on getting
there. No matter what mistakes you
have made with your finances in the
past, always remember that today
is a new day. The key here is to learn
from your mistakes and make a decision not to repeat them. (Proverbs
26:11)
3. Seek out knowledge and wisdom.
Knowledge means to know
something while wisdom involves
applying that knowledge (what you
know) correctly and at the right
time. When we seek to know God
and His ways, we are able to connect to God’s wisdom. Always remember that wisdom can only be
truly effective when it’s put into
action. When Solomon was asked
by God what he wanted, Solomon
responded with “wisdom.” Are you
seeking wisdom or are you just
seeking results in your life?
Solomon humbly recognized that
his knowledge and wisdom was
limited and so he asked God to give
him a discerning heart. You see,
Solomon was smart enough to recognize his need for wisdom. (Proverbs 16:16 / Hosea 4:6)
4. How much time do you commit each day to learning something new?
Most people often say that they
just don’t have enough time, but I
say you have to “make” the time.
Why not sacrifice 30 or 60 minutes
you would normally be spending
watching your favorite TV show?
Instead you can record the program
and watch it later and save some
time by skipping over the commercials which usually take up about
50% of the show anyway.
5. Create a plan and then work
your plan.
Unfortunately, most people take
the CYFP approach (Cross Your
Fingers & Pray) when it comes to
planning for their financial future.
A majority of people spend more
time planning their vacation than
they do their own lives. Take a few
moments today to write down at
least 10 things you want to achieve
in your life over the next five years.
Be sure to give each item a due date
and remember to be as specific as
possible about what you want.
Write down the vision you have for
your life. (Habakkuk 2:2-3)
6. Stay focused on your goal.
Just when you start saving a little
money, that’s when something will
cross your path that you absolutely
must buy. Right at the time you are
ready to read a book on finances,
that’s when the phone will ring,
someone will be at the door, or the
kids will be making too much noise.
It is at these moments that I want to
encourage you yet again to stay focused on your goal. Don’t let the
devil’s distractions become your
destruction. It’s important to always
push to stay focused while you are
on your road to financial independence and to always keep your eyes
on the prize. (Proverbs 4:25)
7. Stay faithful to your goal
and to God.
God can deliver you from or get
you through ANY situation in ways
that you would never even be capable of imagining or conceiving. I
learned a long time ago to stop trying to guess how God was going to
do it and to just simply trust that
He would. Your situation may appear to be hopeless right now and
you might find yourself worrying
how in the world is God going to
get you out of the hole you have dug
for yourself. Just remember that
God’s ways are not our ways and
that our minds are finite while
God’s mind is infinite. (Isaiah 55:89)
8. Take action every day. We
must first give God something to
work with, which in this case is our
actions, thoughts, and words. I always tell people that “FAITH initiates but ACTION activates.” You
won’t be able to do what God can
do and God won’t do what you are
capable of doing. God certainly can
multiply your efforts but you must
keep in mind that zero times ANY
number will always equal zero. The
bible teaches us that faith without
works is dead. In other words, get
up off that muscle and take action.
I hate to bust your bubble, but no
matter how much faith you have
that God will bless your finances, I
seriously doubt that you will be able
to go to bed tonight and wake up
tomorrow morning with your room
filled with stacks of hundred dollar
bills. (James 2:17)
You have been approved for
God’s stimulus package but you
must first be willing to apply it.

CHRISTIANS IN BUSINESS
Money matters, does it make sense?
By DW Grant
The Answer
Our opinion of money, what we
do with it, who we share it with, and
what is done with it after we give it
away, can be the root of a lot of evil.
Wars have been fought, families
separated, churches split, and relationships destroyed over the use of
or perceived misuse of “mammon.”
God has an opinion about money
too. Here are just a couple of His
most controversial economic mandates. Provide for your family or
you’re worse than an infidel,
1Timothy 5:8. Support the House
of God or Church family that is supporting you, or you are robbing
God, Malachi 3:8.
1 Timothy 5:8. In the ancient
world this scripture was originally
given to the man of the house who
literally had to work like a dog to
provide for his family from sunup
to sundown. There were no welfare
nets or soup lines in ancient Israel.
Though God did demand his people
to take of the poor, for the most part
if you didn’t have enough money
to buy food, and the bread winner
was too proud to beg, you and your
family would simply starve.
Thank God today, at least in this
country, we have the welfare net,
and even soup lines are available.
Male and female bread-winners
have financial tools to help to keep
their families off the welfare and
charitable rolls and even build
wealth. Opportunities for investments, like insurances, investment
accounts, and nontaxable shelters,
can be started for as low as a few
dollars a month. If one has the courage to seek them out, enough
money making opportunities are
available to keep a head of household from having to be labeled
worse than a you-know-what.
There is no shortage of businesses today offering breadwinners
the tools to help them provide for
their families in this way.
Malachi 3:8. This scripture
paints the religious family banded
together as God’s “storehouse” and
severely rebukes its members for
selfishly holding back their share of
the wealth. You can try and argue
against tithing and warn against
being caught up in the binding
chains of Old Testament “Law,” but
the logic of the scripture really does
make sense.
If the entire group gives generously into the common purse there
should be enough for everyone
when hard times come. The common purse and proper welfare is a
Biblical idea, and today’s churches
should be the first house the needy
stop at for food and comfort.
How else will they hear the Gospel? Jesus even said this was one
of the evidences that the Kingdom
of God had come. Matthew 11:5.
Unfortunately the government has
taken over this holy responsibility,
and badly performed the act of charity. The church can take back this
good work, and the Gospel can fully
preached, only if its people are generous givers.
Of course giving is a heart issue
and those kind of wrestlings are best
done on one’s knees.
Some breadwinners will
struggle with the first scripture because feeding a family is a constant
battle and some will fight with the
second command because after
feeding a family there may not be
enough left over to be very generous. This is where good stewardship from the church and the breadwinner can help.
Understanding money, how to
budget effectively, and how to apply God’s promises of the return of
blessings to the generous and the
sacrificial can be taught and
learned. Thank God we have pastors and teachers available for help
and encouragement. And thank God
we also have professional money
handlers among us who can also
help us provide for our families.

COMMUNTY NEWS
A Service Oriented and Learning Culture
By Joel Garcia
Founder and President
Latino Townhall
The Answer Newspaper would
like to take this opportunity to introduce you to its newest editorial
content. It is our pleasure to offer
our readers a focused-viewpoint of
the Hispanic Community, and a
bird’s eye view of the latest developments happening to improve the
quality of life within this unique
culture. Moreover, we will provide
new and innovative ways of building the Kingdom of God within the
Hispanic church. It is our hope to
offer this section in both English
and Spanish, and to provide information specifically designed to
reach the innermost parts of this
community.
Migrant workers have long been
known for taking low paying jobs.
On the other hand there are not
many jobs low skilled workers with
a considerable language barrier
qualify for anyway. However, in
time they learn enough of the language to get by, and establish themselves by mastering a trade, then
with the modest money they manage to save they start up their own
small businesses. Soon they find
JOEL GARCIA
themselves thriving. Apparently,
the entrepreneurial spirit is alive in
all of us. My parents are a perfect
example.
My parents migrated in the early
1960’s and found a niche in the cotton fields in southern Arizona before moving to northern California.
It wasn’t an easy time for them in
the early years but they managed
to get by, and earn modest incomes
to support a family of eight. As a
young boy I remember working in
the fields in the summer months and
weekends. During those days I re-
member the words of my parents,
which have been inscribed in my
psyche until this day. They’d say,
“If you don’t attend school and earn
a degree you’ll never advance.
You’ll stay in these labor jobs all
your life.” Well, numb hands in the
winter months and long days in the
summer heat were enough to convince me that higher education was
my only option. Today, my four
brothers, my sister and I have
earned college degrees. We are
prospering in occupations in architecture, running a non-profit organization, education, the Department
of Forestry and working for an energy company in California.
My father and mother also benefited from their labor. In time they
invested their money in real estate
by buying “fixer-upper” homes.
We’d work together in the evenings
and some weekends renovating a
shack into a livable abode. Over the
years their investment paid off. Today, they are owners of four properties, which now provide for their
basic needs in retirement.
One of the greatest qualities of
migrant workers’ is their ability to
serve in whatever job they can acquire. Hispanics are service-ori-
ented people willing to learn and
master a trade by serving in simple,
low paying jobs. Since they have
nothing to lose but everything to
gain, they don’t mind humble beginnings in low paying, blue collar
related jobs. Given the opportunity
this community is willing to work
hard because they need to survive
and provide for their immediate and
extended family members. They are
also willing to sacrifice in the
present moment to gain much more
in the future. Migrants just don’t
work for themselves but for their
parents and other family members
who are living at poverty standards
in Mexico and other South American countries. According to the
Bank of Mexico, last year “Hispanics sent home 25 billion” in revenue, mainly to support their family members. Hispanics also understand the future stakes of their progeny, and work hard for their futures
by saving a smidgeon amount of
money to send them to colleges and
universities in America. Like all
immigrants from the past, Hispanics bring with them a hard work
ethic coupled with a dream. With a
little help, education and encouragement they can contribute greatly
to this country.
This is why I started Latino
Townhall, a premiere mentoring
and leadership development organization designed to equip and empower the growing Latino community in Nevada with educational
opportunities, leadership development, and servant leadership
through community events so they
can experience and access the
American dream.
