GoodNEWS GoodHEALTH BON SECOURS MARYVIEW FOUNDATION But for Philanthropy FALL 2008 S Staying on top of the rapid improvements in medicine is a significant challenge in today’s economic climate. Healthcare systems here and everywhere face the pressure of decreased reimbursements from government sources such as Medicare and Medicaid, while caring for a growing population of senior citizens and the uninsured. At the same time, we’re seeing an increase in the costs of drugs, medical equipment and malpractice insurance, as well as projected shortages of educated qualified staff such as nurses. Meeting the economic challenges of healthcare requires a substantial investment by the Bon Secours T ABLE OF C ONTENTS 2 Let’s Get Real Amy Price MD, Unsung Hero 3 4 Golf Tournament Gala — Rock Around the Clock 5 Nursing Scholarship Endowment 6 10 11 Honor Roll of Donors Maryview Foundation and the communities we care for. The spirit of philanthropy that inspired the formation of the Foundation, which is dedicated to developing sources of funding for programs and services that benefit the communities of Portsmouth and western Hampton Roads, will ensure our communities’ healthcare for years to come. How? Through the power of partnership, generosity and compassion. Through gifts of time, energy and money. Through philanthropy. The Bon Secours Maryview Foundation relies on philanthropic support to sustain the essential healthcare services and programs that keep Hampton Roads healthy. The Foundation exists to provide an opportunity for individuals, families, organizations, and businesses to make investments in needed healthcare in our communities. Without the generosity of our donors, many of our programs and facilities would not exist, programs such as the Bon Secours Maryview Healthcare Center, the Millie Lancaster Women’s Center, the Hospice Program, and the Nursing Education Endowment Fund, to name but a few. Bon Secours means “good help,” and supporting the Bon Secours Maryview Foundation through philanthropy is a way of providing good help for good The Maryview Foundation Healthcare Center offers primary and preventative care to adult residents health here in Hampton Roads. of Portsmouth, Virginia, who have no medical insurance and meet income eligibility. This past year, the Center provided 12,000 patient visits and provided more than $9-million in free healthcare. Hospice Donor Reception and Scholarship Awards Bon Secours Hospice strives to relieve our patients’ physical discomfort and pain while helping both patients and their families cope with their emotional needs. Each year over a hundred volunteers support our hospice program, providing assistance to patients and their caregivers in their homes throughout Hampton Roads. B Where There’s a Will There’s A Way BACK COVER Make a Nurse a Star DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY A grant in the amount of $100,000 from the Beazley Foundation and generous gifts from others will add a second digital mammography machine to the cancer-fighting arsenal at the Millie Lancaster Women’s Center, located in the Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View. The new ergonomic design of the digital equipment offers women easy positioning, reduced exam time, and ultra-fast imaging with superior clarity and accuracy in a comfortable, non-institutional setting. HOSPICE Did You Know For almost two decades the Bon Secours Maryview Foundation has worked in partnership with our community to secure philanthropic support for medical services, expansion of clinical services, add new facilities, and provide state-of-the-art technology. Each day we can see these gifts at work at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, the Health Center at Harbour View, Province Place, Maryview Nursing Care Center, Hospice Programs, and through many community health initiatives. In addition, true to our mission we help provide resources to meet the health care needs and improve the health status of all members of the community, regardless of their ability to pay. As a new member of your community, having been here since January, I am pleased to be a part of this significant enterprise. I endeavor to bring the lessons I have learned throughout my more than thirty years of encouraging philanthropy in both health care and higher education to support the mission of Bon Secours here in Hampton Roads. There are many opportunities to really make a difference, whether it is right now or later. We can help you realize your wishes to create a legacy that will live on and provide Bon Secours – Good Help to those in need of excellent healthcare close to home today and through the years to come. F Karen McQueen, CFRE, Vice President, Bon Secours Maryview Foundation It’s About Your Heart & Soul Let’s Get Real is a community outreach and education campaign specifically designed to bring valuable information in a culturally sensitive way to African-American women living in Hampton Roads. The goal is to raise awareness and lower risk factors for heart disease among African-American Women. The African-American population in general is at high risk for heart disease. In fact, it is their number one killer. Hampton Roads, which is home to a large African-American population, has the highest cardiac mortality rate in an eight-state region. Let’s Get Real approaches heart health awareness in a unique fashion that is specifically designed for African-Americans. The educational components of Let’s Get Real make this experience different. The community outreach programs address AfricanAmerican issues, needs and concern. They consist of: Cookin’ Light – Nutrition seminars feature registered dietitians, who specialize in African-American issues, and local chefs. Together they educate participants on the history of traditional African-American dishes and how to alter favorite recipes so that they are heart healthy. Rhythm of Life – Exercise is approached through classes that weave traditional African-American dance movements and music into an exciting aerobic workout. Check Yourself – Risk factor screenings track blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, body mass index, weight, height and blood oxygen levels. Tree of Life – Knowing your family health history is a key predictor to your own health status. The Tree of Life creates an atmosphere of support and allows participants to share experiences, tips and challenges on family health issues and personal health concerns. Let’s Get Real events and screenings are conducted at various locations in Hampton Roads including churches and other community gathering sites. To learn more call 757-889-2273. Amy Price, MD Recognized as Unsung Hero Dr. Amy Price is the medical director of the Maryview Foundation Healthcare Center. Her enthusiastic and indefatigable leadership has been an inspiration to everyone involved. Dr. Price helped find and orient staff and volunteers, identified qualified patients, managed the budget, obtained funding, marketed the clinic and achieved excellence in patient care. Dr. Price has had a hand in directing all of the functional responsibilities of a busy, start-up clinic operation. She is actively engaged in activities with the Bon Secours Maryview Foundation to raise funds through special events and grants as well as the marketing department to publicize the facility and its services. Her work has set a standard for excellence for the clinic, and the result has been an operation that has become a model clinic. In May she was recognized as an Unsung Hero by the Virginia Healthcare Foundation at their annual Heroes in Healthcare luncheon held in Richmond. Dr. Price speaks passionately about the Center, “Helping the uninsured is one of the greatest needs in our society. The Center was conceived as a solution to help provide a medical home for uninsured Portsmouth residents and to provide better access to primary care, medications and health education.” She understands the challenges our society faces in providing care and does her part with profound dedication to being part of the solution. D 2 Good NEWS Good HEALTH BON SECOURS MARYVIEW FOUNDATION Golf Tournament — Another Winning Year SPONSORS Presenting Sponsor Ocean Marine, LLC Eagle Sponsor TeamHealth MidSouth Birdie Sponsors Bon Secours Surgery Center at Harbour View, LLC TowneBank We had a very successful turnout for this year’s golf tournament, which featured two time U.S. Open Champion Curtis Strange. Eleven teams played in the morning and 31 in the afternoon, raising approximately $47,000. The proceeds will help fund Emergency Department expansion at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center and Oncology Services at Maryview and Bon Secours Health Center at Harbour View. Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center — Emergency Department Expansion The Emergency Department at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center consistently meets the growing needs of the Portsmouth Community within a physical area that was designed in 1999 to treat 35,000 Emergency Cases each year. Today, the Emergency Department treats 57,000 Emergency Cases each year – a more than 61% increase in less than ten years. To consistently meet and exceed the growing expectations of our community, Maryview is expanding its Emergency Department. With funds raised by the golf tournament and anticipated support from others in the community, plans include: New Triage Facilities to provide better space to evaluate patients for treatment as they arrive at the Emergency Department Addition of 10 new Transfer Beds with privacy for patients who are being admitted to the hospital Re-design and improvement of the workspace for clinicians so that they can be more efficient and effective in providing Emergency Services Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center and Bon Secours Health Center at Harbor View – Oncology Services Many types of cancer are preventable. Breast, lung and colorectal cancers can be treated effectively if detected early through regular screenings. High-end technology, combined with high-touch focus, greatly improves the chances for successful treatment. Through community events, seminars, cancer assessments that emphasize lifestyle changes, and education about the disease, cancer risk can be reduced and opportunity for survival greatly improved. Although community education and outreach is the key to reducing the incidence and mortality from cancer, education, prevention and support services are generally not covered by medical insurance. That is why proceeds from the golf tournament and other philanthropic support are so important for maintaining and improving Oncology Services. It also gave attendees a chance to make a difference in our future by supporting a Nursing Education Endowment Fund at Maryview Medical Center. Endowment scholarships will offer nurses the opportunity to challenge their hearts and minds, improve their skills, advance their careers and support their goals. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Medical Center Radiologists Maryview Medical Center Nurses Cardio Vascular Specialists Gala Volunteers Carroll & Gloria Creecy Shirley and Jimmy Pigg 2 1 3 4 Good 4 5 NEWS Good HEALTH 6 BON SECOURS MARYVIEW FOUNDATION Why a Nursing Education Endowment Fund? 7 8 9 Duomars Ice Cream provided dessert Carroll & Gloria Creecy Rock Around the Clock 7 Sooner or later most of us will be in a hospital or other health care setting for one reason or another. Whether we’re there for a major illness or a minor injury, a nurse will be involved in our care--unless there are no nurses available. Most of us won’t pay attention to a shortage of nurses until we personally need them and they aren’t there. An aging population, increasing regional growth and rapid changes in health care programs and services mean that we need more nurses than ever before. Yet we are facing a projected national shortage of more than 400,000 nurses by the year 2020 as the current nursing population ages and retires. To retain and encourage nurses, Bon Secours provides opportunities for continuing education so that our nurses can grow in their profession by studying advances in theory and practice, obtaining certification in chosen specialties and advancing their careers at the bedside or in management roles. We want to continue to grow and invest in these programs to make nursing at Maryview a major career goal, so that our patients always have the best and brightest nurses providing their care. Maryview cannot fund all of the nursing education needs. This effort requires a philanthropic partnership with the community. And that is why we are building a Nursing Education Endowment Fund. As you may know, an endowment is a permanent fund – much like a trust fund – that is invested and each year provides income to support nursing education. The endowment may bear the name of the donor or recognize/pay tribute to a family or individual(s). When nurses receive funding from an endowment, they will be advised that they have received this from a named fund, and the donor will also be advised of the recipient(s). Whether you wish to contribute to the Nursing Education Endowment Fund or create an endowed fund in your name or in honor of a special person, the Bon Secours Maryview Foundation can work with you to develop a plan that meets your personal and financial objectives. [For further information, please Karen McQueen 757-393-0813 or email [email protected]] This effort requires a philanthropic partnership with the community. Make a Nurse a Star! Almost everyone has a special person in their life who is, or was, a nurse. This special person might be your mother, brother, sister, or other relative, a friend, colleague or someone who cared for you during an illness. This is an opportunity to recognize them for the contribution they made in service to their patients. Individual stars will be created with the name(s) of the nurse(s) you wish to honor this year. All stars created through December will be on display on the Holiday Light Tree in the Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. All gifts will be added to our Nursing Education Endowment Fund and nurses honored with a star will be notified about your gift. Suggested gifts are $25 for a small nursing star (5-inch diameter) and $50 for a large nursing star (12inch diameter). Your gift will make a nurse a star--and help create an opportunity for someone else to become a star someday! 8 9 Good NEWS Good HEALTH 5 Honor Roll of Donors INDIVIDUALS Dr. & Mrs. Robert J. Good NEWS Good HEALTH 9 Hospice Programs Young Author Contributes to Kidz ‘N Grief Program Good Grief follows a ten-year-old boy through the grieving process—from disbelief, to anger, to acceptance—in the year following his father’s death and highlights the experiences he goes through when dealing with the fear and anxieties that follow the loss of a parent. With the support of his family, friends, and a children’s bereavement group, he grows to accept the challenges of coping and learns that even when the loved one is not with you in person, he or she is always with you in your heart. At the age of eight, Chad Bonadonna lost his father and grandmother to cancer. He went through the grieving process with the help of his family, friends and a support group. After two years with the Bon Secours Hospice Kidz ‘N Grief program, Chad decided to use his experience to help others— first by becoming a volunteer with Kidz ‘N Grief and then by interviewing other children to see what they experienced after losing a parent. Chad wrote Good Grief to help other children work through their grief. Good Grief is available through Barnes and Noble in both soft cover and hard cover editions. Chad is donating the proceeds from the sale of his books to continue the good work of the Bon Secours Kidz ‘N Grief program. G Chad Bonadonna, author of Good Grief, signed books at The Art of Compassion event held at the Phoebus Art Gallery in Hampton, Virginia on September 19th. Proceeds from the event will support the many programs Bon Secours Hospice offers patients and families. Mikey’s Camp encourages children and teens to explore their grief in a weekend camp experience, where self-expression is heard, valued, and honored. At Mikey’s Camp, each camper is assigned a “Big Buddy” who will share the weekend with him or her. Trained facilitators lead “healing circles” carefully designed to help campers get in touch with their grief. Additional staff also provide recreational, educational, and motivational opportunities. The camp concludes with an inspiring lakeside memorial service where each camper remembers loved ones in a special way. About 60 trained facilitators, helpers, and Big Buddies make Mikey’s Camp—named for the program’s first therapy dog—a rewarding experience for staff and campers alike. M Bon Secours Hospice Providing Comfort… Preserving Dignity… Affirming Life Bon Secours Hospice provides a special way of caring for people with life-threatening illnesses. Hospice healthcare professionals assisted by volunteers help patients and their families cope with the physical and emotional needs of a person taking the final steps of life’s journey. Many special Hospice programs are volunteer-based. We welcome participation in any of the programs we offer: Patient and Family Support volunteers visit throughout Hampton Roads, offering comfort and companionship to Hospice patients and caregivers in their homes. The Pet Therapy Team members visit patients at our nursing care center, providing that special unconditional love that only a four-legged friend can share. B VolunTEENS help with administrative work and special projects. KIDZ ’N GRIEF is a support group for grieving children and their parents and/or caregivers, involving more than 25 trained volunteer facilitators and helpers. Children participate in age-appropriate groups which offer support through art, games stories, play, and other activities that promote the expression of feelings and thoughts, helping them adjust to the physical loss of their loved one. A “Volcano Room” is set up to encourage children to express their most volatile feelings in a safe place. Grief support is also available to the adults who bring children to the program. Bon Secours Hospice relies on its many volunteers and gifts from our community to provide special programs that support our patients and their loved ones. If you would like to learn more about becoming a Hospice Volunteer, making a gift or making Hospice the beneficiary of your special event, please contact: Michelle Jones, Volunteer Coordinator, Bon Secours Hospice, 3636 High Street, Portsmouth, VA 23707, 757-391-6020 (office), [email protected] 10 Good NEWS Good HEALTH BON SECOURS MARYVIEW FOUNDATION Annual Donor Reception Also Salutes Local Scholars Donors to the Bon Secours Maryview Foundation, as well as four high school graduating seniors and their families, gathered in May at the Maryview Medical Center. Dawn Glynn, Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors; Barbara Chamberlain, Chair of the Donor Stewardship Committee, and other Directors acknowledged the valuable healthcare resources our community enjoys because of the charitable gifts we receive. Each year The Friends of Maryview provides scholarships to several outstanding children of Maryview employees who are graduating from high school. The funds are made available through the efforts of our many hospital volunteers who staff the gift shop as well as hold many craft sales, bake sales and other fundraising efforts throughout the year. This is in addition to the hundreds of hours they contribute to help make our patients and their families more comfortable during their time D with us. This year four young men received scholarships. Wyatt Hill, the son of Sherry Hill, Volunteer Coordinator, graduated from Norfolk Collegiate School and is now attending the University of Virginia, where he plans to major in Architecture. Wyatt is a scholar-athlete who was a member of the National Honor Society, Senior Class President, Representative to Boys State and a volunteer at Maryview during his sophomore and junior years. Picture? Paul Jaglowski, the son of Richard Jaglowski, Behavioral Medicine, graduated from Western Branch High School in Chesapeake. He is a scholar-athlete, was a member of the National Honor Society for three years, and has volunteered at Oasis homeless shelter and participated in mission project to a Haitian Orphanage. He plans to become a physician focused on sports medicine and is attending Ferrum College. Jason Lassiter, the son of Linda Lassiter, Care Management Department, was also a member of the National Honor Society. He graduated from Peninsula Catholic High School. A scholar-athlete, he was a finalist for the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2006. He is an active volunteer at his school, through his church and in the community. Jason is attending the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. James Scott, the son of Linda Scott, Behavioral Medicine, is attending the University of Virginia, where he is studying electrical engineering. He graduated from Norview High School in Norfolk. He was captain of the Picture? Norview Robotics Team, a member of the National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society, and was also a Dodson Scholar, which recognizes AfricanAmerican students with a 3.0 grade point or better. Left ot right: Paul Jaglowski, James Scott, Wyatt Hill and Jason Lassiter Where There’s a Will There’s a Way Why you need a will, and how do you get one? If you own property of any kind – whether you are single, married, divorced, a parent or childless – you need a will. Think of this essential document as a way to extend your love to the important people and organizations that have benefited your life. What happens if I die without a will? More than half of all Americans die without at will. The Uniform Probate Code, adopted at least in part by 18 states and serving as an example to all, dictates how your property is passed if you do not have a will. As good as that Code may be, it cannot possibly reflect your specific wishes for family, friends and favorite charitable organizations. In addition, significant savings of time and expense may be realized by proper use of a will. Do I need an attorney to draft my will? Experts agree that, although not legally required, it is wise to hire an attorney to draft your will so that it is legally acceptable and accomplishes exactly what you want it to do. For example, you may want your will to address some of the following objectives: • Distribute personal property as you have promised during your life. • Set up trusts to save taxes and provide financial management. How do I leave a gift to charitable organizations in my will? One of the simplest ways to benefit a charitable organization (or anyone important to you) is through a bequest. Make sure that you designate precisely the organization or person you’d like to benefit. You can designate a specific item, a set sum of money, a percentage of your estate or the remainder of your estate once other bequests, debts and taxes have been paid. For gifts to qualified charitable organizations, your estate may receive either an estate or income tax deduction for the amount of the gift. For more information about including Bon Secours Maryview Foundation in your estate plans, please contact: Karen W. McQueen, CFRE Vice President 757-393-0813 [email protected]. • Name the person—known as the executor – who will oversee the execution of the terms of your will. • Name the guardian of your minor children.
