Director’s Welcome
Animal Welfare: What Can You Do To Help Change Northwest Indiana?
What happens to the animals that are turned away from Humane Society Calumet Area when
there is no more room? This is a question none of us want to think about but it is one that
undoubtedly crosses my mind several times every day. It is also a giant reality of what we are
facing on a daily basis in our area due to pet overpopulation. So that we never have to question
the fate of any animal, we are calling upon the communities in Northwest Indiana to pull together
and form a collaborative effort.
HSCA certainly does not euthanize for space, but this does mean we run out of room very quickly.
The truth is that if we had a building three times this size, it would constantly be full. HSCA does
not discriminate based on where a person lives. We do have a contract in place with the Town of
Dyer and have recently entered into an agreement with the Town of Highland. As a courtesy to the
Town in which we reside, Munster, we also provide assistance as well. We want to partner with
your municipality too. I urge you to get involved. Ask your Mayor, Town Council or Commissioner
to contact me today about how we can start to work together to change animal welfare in Indiana.
Did you know that in a recent study by the Humane Society of the United States, Indiana was
ranked number 35 on a list of animal friendly states? Illinois is number 4. We are decades behind
where we need to be, but with your help we can get there.
As donors, friends of the animals, and volunteers, I urge you to find out what’s going on in your
community. The Humane Society Calumet Area is here to help and we need your help to do that.
What is your municipality doing with stray animals? You have the right to ask what your local
animal control is doing and know where animals are ending up. Is there a local Rescue Group
or Humane Society in Northwest Indiana that needs assistance? Send them our way. We are all
working toward the same goal but we all need to get on the same page.
Humane Society Calumet Area undoubtedly makes a significant difference every day in the
community but we want to do things better! As part of our strategic plan, we have realized that to
become more effective we must begin to look outward to the community as a whole. This year we
want to help more animals than ever before. It is our goal to significantly reduce the number of
homeless pets in Northwest Indiana through adoptions, education and spay neuter services.

Reggie (4-year-old Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) was rescued
(freed) from a puppy mill at about 3-months-old due to health issues with weak
back legs and parasites. Lovey (6-year-old Ruby Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) was an owner surrender when she was 4-years-old.
They are very sweet, friendly dogs and are best friends. They walk together
on leash and when one stops to investigate, the other stops and waits. They
sleep together, play together and look out the door together. Lovey has the
perfect name as she wants to visit with everyone and sits to be talked to or,
better yet, petted. Reggie is more reserved and waits to make sure Lovey gets
attention and then he will also visit.

Unique Ways to Help the Animals
Meghann Borowski and Raychel Anoe were devastated
when their beloved relative Nick Anoe passed away on October 2, 2009 at only 27-years-old.
Nick was Meghann’s cousin and Raychel’s uncle. He was a
loving owner to his pets Maggie, Kobie, and Molly and also
an avid Chicago White Sox fan. His family purchased a
legacy brick at U.S. Cellular Field, but Meghann and Raychel
wanted to do something
to honor his love for
animals.
Meghann and Raychel
decided to turn their
grief into a project to
help homeless animals. They decided to
host a Valentine’s Day
fundraiser at Kahler
Middle School for their
classmates. Meghann
& Raychel organized a
raffle, bake sale, and
charged admission at
the door. They raised
$1,080 for the shelter.
The shelter hopes to add advanced obedience / agility
classes this year if enrollment permits.
The ASPCA Virtual Pet Behaviorist (www.aspcabehavior.
org)site notes that activities such as agility training, fetch,
tug-of-war, freestyle, and flyball are great outlets for high-energy dogs. Training and games are also a great tool to help
foster a strong human / pet bond.
The United States Dog Agility Association, Inc. (USDAA) describes
Dog Agility as “a competative sport
that tests a person’s skils in training and handling of dogs over a
timed obstacle course.”
Meghann Borowski & Raychel Anoe pose with the agility equipment they donated in
memory of Nick Anoe.
To help enrich current
shelter dogs and provide the possiblity of expanding obedience training services,
Meghann and Raychel decided to designate their donation
for agility equipment. They purchased a tire jump, six-pole
weave bar, six adjustable jumps, and a tunnel.
In honor of Nick, a memorial sign was placed in the kennel
at the shelter stating, “‘We can judge the heart of a man by
his treatment of animals.’ ~Immanuel Kant
This is dedicated to the kind and gentle heart of
Nicholas Anoe (1982-2009).”

Dogs with loads of extra energy
may turn to destructive behavior such as chewing to stave off
boredom. Training is a great way
to bond with your dog and help
her release extra energy. Training activities can be as simple as
teaching your dog to sit on command or to come when called or
as complex as running an agility
course.
HSCA is always adding new obedience classes to our schedule, so visit www.hscalumet.org for
current dates or call 219-922-3811 for more information.

Stardust II in Merrillville, IN currently offers bowling
for only $1.50 per game every Thursday when a $2
donation is made. All donations raised from this
program go directly to the Humane Society Calumet
Area. Through this program, we have consistently
raised anywhere from $500 - $800 every month
since its inception.
We would like to thank the staff at Stardust II for their
generosity and for creating such a great program.
Paper Recycling Program
You can help the homeless animals
of the HSCA and the environment
by simply bringing your newspapers,
magazines, mail, school & office papers, notebooks, folders, and catalogs
to our green and yellow recycle bins.
We have consistently received around
$200 per month thanks to your donations!
Please do not put cardboard in the bins!
Did you know?
For every ton of paper recycled (each bin holds 2 tons):
7,000 gallons of water is saved
390 gallons of oil is saved
17 fewer trees are used
60 pounds of greenhouse gases are avoided
Birthday Parties at the Shelter
Shelter birthday parties are a great option for children who love animals. Imagine having a party for
your child and not cooking or cleaning!
For as little as $150, the HSCA will host a party for up to 20 kids (additional kids $5 each) featuring a
behind-the-scenes shelter tour, cake, ice cream, drinks, games, animal play time and more!
Dogs love shelter birthday parties, too! Your pup can invite his doggy friends for a time of games and
dog birthday treats. Throw your best friend the birthday bash of his life.
Stretch & Scratch
These cardboard scratcher attach to the cat’s cage bars. The
cats love the scratch and rub
their faces on the Stretch and
Scratch. Stretch and Scratch
promotes healthy stretching
and helps keep nails clean. For
more information visit:
www.stretchandscratch.com.
Shop and Search Online
Go to www.igive.com, choose the HSCA as your charity
and shop as you normally would at your favorite online
stores like Best Buy and Target. A percentage of your
purchase will be donated to the HSCA.
If online shopping isn’t your thing, do all of your Internet
searching at www.goodsearch.com. Search and get results like you would with any other search engine. Everytime you search, money is donated to the HSCA. It’s that
easy! Just 500 people searching four times a day would
raise $7,300 in a year!

Success Stories
I just wanted to give you another
update on Remington aka: Bolt, and
send you some pictures. I know it has
been a long time, since we got him in
January. We just love him and he has
been such a good boy. He is a really
good dog. He just loves people, loves
my grandkid, he gets along good with
other dogs and he listens real good
too! He is so attached to us. Follows
us everywhere and is under our feet
all the time. (I guess that would be
the worst thing he does.) We have
enjoyed Remy so much. We are so
lucky to have found him. We have had Remy camping with
us a number of times. He has
been camping in 9 states and 24
campgrounds. He just loves to go
camping. He knows it will be a new
adventure each time. John and Becky Shuttz
The middle dog is Grace. We adopted
her from you two years ago. She was
a puppy mill rescue. Her name was
Carolina. Just wanted you to know she
is doing great with us!

I would like to share a little success
story about Harry Thomas Belafonte
Baran (H.T.B.B.). I adopted Harry from
HSCA February 20, 2010. It was love at
first site when I saw him in his crate. I
met with him and knew he had to come
home with me. After telling my husband,
who is not a cat person, that I adopted
a kitty, I readied the entire house for
Harry. Harry came home in a cardboard
box, and once that box was opened,
he jumped onto my husband and that
was it. There was a connection and my
husband saw why Harry needed to come home with me. I want to thank HSCA
for granting me the proud mother status to Harry Thomas Belafonte Baran.

Our loving Dakota wanted a brother or
sister for Christmas. So while making a
stop at the Humane Society to drop off
some donation supplies we took a look
around. There was a tortie kitten just 19
weeks old. She kept reaching her paw out
as if to say, “can I come out and play?” She
also had the cutest face. We asked to see
her. Her name was Shawna. She didn’t
like to be held much and just wanted to run
and hide. We asked when she was born
and bells went off in all our heads. It was
the same as mine. July 30th. I looked at
my husband and he knew it was the sign
I needed to make a decision. Shawna
came home with us three weeks later. She
was given a strong name of Harley Shawna Jas. Dakota got her baby sister and
though we had a bit of a rocky start; the two of them are typical siblings. In the
evenings when watching television Harley lays on our laps and Dakota over the
back of the sofa. The two of the will cuddle and play. The laundry basket seems
to be their favorite nesting place. Harley’s best trick is knowing how to empty the
laundry shoot for me. Yes, she gets the door open and pulls out all the laundry
then sleeps on it until I do it. Harley Shawna Jas is my laughter, and my alarm
clock every single morning. God sent us the little blessing and Dakota got her
Christmas wish.

I adopted Meka from your shelter
on 6/28/11. Meka is doing very
well; we love her, and so does
Oreo, our male cat who is 10

they look very much alike! Meka
is a great addition to our family!

1. Cost
When you first get your rabbit, you will need to spend about
$90 for a cage, $30 for a carrier and $25 for a litter box. Food
costs average about $125 a year, plus $25 annually for toys
and treats, $125 for veterinary care and $400 annually for litter and bedding material.
2. Not Good for Small Children
Rabbits have very delicate bodies and if dropped accidently
by a child, their legs and backs can easily by broken. Children love to hold, cuddle and carry animals around - these
are precisely the things that frighten rabbits most. Rabbits are
unable to cry out when distressed, so they may scratch or bite
a well-meaning child.
3. Nutritional Requirements
Rabbits have specific nutritional requirements. It’s not enough
to throw some pellets in a bowl and put a water bottle on their
cage. The most important part of a rabbit’s diet is grass hay,
such as Timothy. It keeps their intestinal tract healthy. They
should have an unlimited supply of hay available.
Rabbits also need a minimum of 2 cups per 6 pounds of rabbit
of fresh, leafy greens daily such as lettuces, collard greens,
turnip greens and carrot tops.
4. Environmental Concerns
Rabbits must be kept indoors. They are naturally social and
outdoor hutches require them to live in isolation. A small or
medium sized rabbit needs a cage that is at least 3 to 4 feet
long. They have strong back legs made for running and jumping and they need room to move around.
5. Care
Rabbits can be messy, so your rabbit’s cage will need to be
cleaned once or twice weekly. Never pick up a rabbit by their
ears or scruff as this can result in serious injury. Rabbits need
to be brushed regularly to keep their coat in good condition.
Rabbits must be treated by Veterinarians trained in small
animal medicine. The Veterinarians listed below are qualified
to handle rabbits. Ask before taking your rabbit to a clinic
whether they have a veterinarian on staff who specializes in
exotic or small animals.
