WINTER 2008 EDITION New NARVA Catalogue launched Also in this edition: > Ultima 225 a real winner > New force in L.E.D Worklamps > The Kenworth success story > A brighter Inspection Lamp > NARVA teams up with HSV www.narva.com.au WE LC O M E Welcome For our ‘new look’ edition of Narva News I was asked to write a welcome column. When contemplating this task I thought I would just write something about Brown & Watson International being the best company in the world to work for (which we are), and that what we do, we do really well! So here goes... My tenure with the company is now 38 years of which the last 20 years have been as CEO. The previous 18 years (I started in 1970 with BWI) I worked as a store person at 281 La Trobe Street, which was then Brown and Watson’s head office and warehouse and later on in various locations and different jobs as BWI moved on to bigger and better operations. BWI has been operating as a company since 1953 and operated in the main as a manufacturer’s representative looking after the interests of interstate manufacturing companies in the state of Victoria and serving the then Wholesale Distributors based in Melbourne. All companies we represented produced products sold into the Automotive OE and related Aftermarket(s) segments. The NARVA name and Lighting product (Industrial, GLS and Automotive globes) was introduced by us in the early 80’s and all products at that time were manufactured in East Germany. The NARVA name is derived from the following words Nitrogen, Argon, Rayon, VAcuum, put all these together and you have light. The initial introduction and marketing of the product was very hard and the range very limited. Our first (1982) “professional” leaflet was a double sided A4 and 80% of the offering was a range of Halogen and Incandescent globes. As the product range found more acceptance in the market place it was expanded into Driving Lamps, Work Lamps and Truck and Trailer products resulting in the first catalogue to be printed in 1984. It consisted of 10 loose leaf double sided Black and White printed pages, a copy of which is in my office and a constant reminder of where and how it all started. The introduction last February of the NARVA 2008/10 catalogue shows how far we have come. It contains 376 pages of product and information and it makes me immensely proud to have been part of this wonderful BWI team for so many years. From a staff of 7 to the 150 plus which we now employ in Australia and New Zealand, many of them very long serving team members, we can truly say that we are an integral part of the OE and Automotive Aftermarket with our products fitted to HSV cars, Kenworth trucks, Mack/ Volvo trucks, Iveco trucks, and the major trailer and body builders to just name a few and for the public, they can find our Narva products in the majority of Automotive parts stores and Service Station outlets throughout Australia and New Zealand. I trust you enjoy this publication of Narva News and until next time when I will share a few more stories with you. Determined to create a worldwide superior product, the Narva team set out on a journey that continually challenged all team members. The end result is already reaping a plentiful harvest with enthusiastic consumer response and world wide sales forcing a significant boost to production requirements. U LTI MA 225 Ultima 225 – a triumph of design This new range is the culmination of more than three years research and development by Narva and their Swedish design partners. Initiated by and owned solely by Narva, the idea stemmed from market demand for a larger version of the popular Ultima 175 lamps, also designed by the Swedes. photometric laboratory. With modern technology, laboratory results could be exchanged between Australia and Sweden with changes made repeatedly to improve light output. Causing unwanted delays, these constant changes were eventually applauded by all once the final light output was established. The design brief was created in Australia by benchmarking the performance and durability of established brands combined with over 25 years of accumulated data from the Narva archives. The design concept also considered the vast range of bull bars available in Australia and the ease of fitment across the most popular bull bar types. Aside from light output, the durability of a lamp’s construction is also very vital. Using the established ‘Rotary Cup’ mounting system of the Ultima 175 as a base to launch from, the designers set about improving the system to suit the larger and heavier 225. Testing was carried out on Road Trains travelling between Adelaide and Innamincka. The route included 450km of the unsealed Strzelecki Track. Based on these field tests, design adjustments were made and the engineers inched closer to a design that could endure such unrelenting conditions. Once final improvements were complete, the Ultima 225 was triumphant over the Australian outback. The concept, now brought to reality, was to develop market leading performance within an all new and modern design to establish the world’s best driving lamps. Hand made samples were made available and exhaustive testing was undertaken within Narva’s advanced Further design benefits include free form reflector technology and polycarbonate lenses to establish light performance not previously possible with glass lens optics. Packed in retail display boxes, all lamp kits include polycarbonate see through lens protectors and a complete ‘Plug and Play’ wiring harness. Ultima 225 is available in Halogen, Halogen Blue and H.I.D (High Intensity Discharge) that includes the latest D1 globes and Generation 5 ballasts. In summary, Narva are immensely proud of the Ultima 225, “With years of development benchmarked against the world’s best lamps, plus exhaustive laboratory and field testing, we have a world class lamp range with the new Ultima 225’s that set new standards in style and performance”, said George Davies, Narva’s Marketing Manager. “Every facet of the lamp has been thought through from material selection to the final packaging and patents. With Ultima 225 we know we have a winner that users will love”. The all new L.E.D Work Lamp is delivering an amazing volume of light (500 Lumens) and creating a more even, whiter light when compared with conventional sealed beam work lamps. The whiter light of L.E.D (right) can clearly be seen in comparison to the conventional lamp (left) With no globe filament to break, the reliability and service life of the new L.E.D work lamp is much greater than traditional alternatives. To meet the harshest working environments this modern styled lamp is produced with die-cast aluminium housing, stainless steel fittings and a virtually unbreakable polycarbonate lens. Brian Nassar, state workhop manager for waste management company J.J.Richards, has fitted the L.E.D work lamp since late 2007, ‘We mounted the lamps in the most vulnerable part of the vehicle, where we constantly damage lighting. So far, these lamps have proved their worth and the performance and quality of the L.E.D output has impressed without a doubt’ stated Brian. The L.E.D’s low current draw of just 1.2 Amps at 12 Volt and 0.5 Amps at 24 Volt, places little or no strain on the vehicle’s electrical system and the lamp performs at full brightness as low as 8.5Volts. Over-voltage protection is also built in. Light in weight, fully adjustable and with dimensions of just 106mm diameter and a depth of 63mm, the new lamp can be easily fitted to a wide variety of applications. N The Kenworth Connection At the 2008 Melbourne International Trailer, Truck and Equipment Show, leading Australian truck manufacturer Kenworth, showcased their 2008 range. Featured on the T408, T608 and K108 were several L.E.D lamps made by Narva that marked a triumph of design for both companies. The intricate design of the Model 70 lamp The slimline design offers an all new approach to front direction indicators 6 K E N W O R TH For their 2008 models, Kenworth engineers had decided that modern L.E.D lighting should be used wherever possible. Having proven over a number of years as the preferred choice of some of Australia’s leading trailer and special equipment builders, Narva teamed with Kenworth to tackle the task. The project proved to be challenging due to the complex ADR requirements that needed to be met. Side Direction Indicator: As of July 2000 all new truck and bus designs are required to fit a category 6 side turn indicator. The ADR requirements are quite difficult to meet and almost all category 6 lamps on the market are large and unsightly. With the development of what is now known as the Model 33, Narva has developed quite possibly, the worlds only L.E.D lamp that meets not just ADR 6/00 category 6 but category 5 as well. To further enhance the lamps appeal to OEM’s, the one lamp suits both the left and right sides. Model 33 is now featured on the T408, T608, K108 Kenworths and available as a standard line from the Narva stable. Wrap Around Front Direction Indicator Lamp: Used for many years with an indandescent bulb, the idea to convert the wrap around indicator to L.E.D was The Model 70 and Model 33 L.E.D lamps deliver improved style and performance pioneered by the Kenworth engineers. To bring the idea to life, an inventive approach to the design was required. Using 21 new generation L.E.D’s, the metallised reflector required over 100 parabolas and 56 inverted parabolas so that the strict ADR requirements could be met. As seen, the final design is somewhat unfamiliar to L.E.D lighting products but can truly be considered a triumph of design. Slimline Front Direction Indicator Lamp: Enhancing the front end styling of the T408 and T608 models is a new slimline front direction indicator lamp designed and built specifically to the demanding OEM specifications for exclusive use by Kenworth. This new ADR approved lamp uses 24 new generation L.E.D’s in a slimline format to suit the limited space available in the Kenworth headlamp surround. N Now known as the Model 70, the lamp is fitted OEM to the Kenworth K108 and available as a standard Narva line. WINTER 2008 EDITION 7 L . E. D I N S P E CTI O N LAM P S ‘See Ezy’ leads the revolution NZ trailer industry embraces L.E.D It would appear that the industry no longer needs convincing of the advantages of L.E.D (Light Emitting Diode) lighting. The majority of truck, bus and trailer manufacturers now use L.E.D lighting as standard for just about everything. Narva’s cordless L.E.D inspection lamps burst onto the market in early 2006 and have been at the forefront of a lighting revolution. With continuous product improvement and range expansion, the Narva lamps have rapidly become the first choice in handheld lighting for workshops, tradesmen and campers. Here we take a closer look at the range that has won numerous product awards and become one of the brands greatest success stories. L.E.D technology, with its exceptionally low current draw, now allows for up to 600 Lumens of light output to be produced using handheld battery power. The greatest benefit however, is that the light can be produced at full output for up to 8 hours. With so much light produced using such little battery power, it is the OH&S benefit, and convenience of no power cords that has assisted the L.E.D inspection lamps to become such a success. With three lamps now included in the Narva program, a selection of chargers is also included to suit each one. For the ‘Professional’ Rechargeable Cordless L.E.D inspection lamp (P/No. 71320), a 240 Volt docking station charger makes it conveniently accessible in a workshop with automatic recharging once it is returned to the cradle. These can be wall or counter mounted. A 12/24V charger that fits into a vehicle cigarette lighter socket is also available for this model. Ideal for the mobile tradesman is the second and latest version of the large inspection lamp (P/No. 71312). This comes complete with both 240V and 12/24V DC phone style chargers. Similar style phone chargers are also supplied with the ‘Compact’ lamp. The popular ‘Compact’ Rechargeable L.E.D Inspection lamp (P/No. 71302) that fits neatly into a tool box or glove box, proved so popular upon release that production capacity had to be trebled. NiMH batteries are fitted to each lamp. This type of battery has no memory effect so frequent charging can be done without harmful results. The complete range is designed with shockproof housings that are resistant to oil and grease with shatterproof polycarbonate lenses. All three lamps are attractively packed complete with accessories and featuring full colour art work to assist retail sales staff. N 8 It’s no wonder really, the advantages of L.E.D over conventional lighting far out weigh the added investment required for the initial purchase. Fleet managers were the first to see the light, so to speak. The reliability of L.E.D, with no filament to break, low current draw, multi voltage circuitry, hard wired cable and impact resistance, reduces down time and repair costs dramatically. L.E.D is considered by many as life time lighting. With the release of the Model 34 and Model 36 L.E.D box trailer lamps, Narva, for the first time placed the benefits and quality of L.E.D into the hands of the everyday consumer. Designed to match the footprint of Australia and New Zealand’s most popular trailer lamps, they come backed by a 5 year warranty. Quick to take advantage of the new lamps was Ray Hagenson, owner of Monoway Trailers, an independent manufacturer of box trailers, car carriers, horse floats and live stock transporters based in Auckland, New Zealand. A large part of the Monoway business is the supply of box trailers to Service Station hire fleets. Lighting reliability is of critical importance with each customer needing to be reassured that the trailer lighting is in good working order, both for safety and legal reasons. ‘The most important element for our Service Station trailers is lighting reliability. That’s why we use Narva L.E.D lights. We know we can fit and forget them’ stated Ray. For a business such as Monoway, the benefits of L.E.D extends far beyond the advantages gained during manufacturing, such as hard wired cables and ease of fitment. This was highlighted by Ray in reference to the trailer hire business, ‘With L.E.D used on hire trailers, the Service Station forecourt staff no longer need to deal with irrate customers complaining about faulty tail light globes. They also no longer need to spend time trying to fix them and their customer is assured of fully functional lighting. It’s a win win for all involved’. N G LO B E TE C H N O LO GY Blue Power – technology that delivers 100% more Vision In 1999, Narva released its first performance globe range that consisted of Plus 30 and Arctic Blue types. The increased performance of these globes was made possible through the use of Xenon gas additives and the manipulation of the Kelvin rating, or colour temperature. increased light volume of the ‘Plus’ globes or the whiter, brighter light of the ‘Blue’ globes. Now with Blue Power, they can have both within the one globe,” stated George Davies, Narva Marketing Manager. Blue Power are available in H1, H3, H4 and H7. They are suitable for use in polycarbonate headlamps and are fully ECE and ADR approved. with the majority containing bonus Arctic Blue park lamp globes. The launch of the ‘Blue Power’ is to be supported by promotional activity, merchandising and a full page colour advertisement to be featured in leading automotive trade and consumer magazines across Australia and New Zealand. N Further enhancing the Narva performance globe range, all twin packs now come in attractive clear presentation packs The technology was further improved in 2002 and the Plus 30 globes became Plus 50. Proving very popular, the ‘Plus’ globes enhanced light output by increasing the volume of light produced by the filament yet retained the standard wattage, colour and appearance. Equally as popular the Arctic Blue globes increased the quality of the light with an increased Kelvin rating creating a brighter, whiter light. rformance Glo be really add up ible r offers an incred Narva’s Blue Powe fitted regular globes, heat, it’s easily 20% whiter than r consumption or er 80% lighter and increase in powe volume with a bright vision. The reason for this is the human eye is perfectly adapted to daylight. But what is daylight? The human eye is highly sensitive to daylight. Daylight KELVIN (K) The Narva ‘Blue Power’ globes provide increased light volume combined with high colour temperature, creating a light closer to daylight. These advancements lead to increased visibility and less eye strain at night, therefore increasing safety. N 5500 One specification to characterise daylight is by the colour temperature K (=Kelvin) which describes the human perception of light. As you can see from the graph, red and yellow perceived light have a lower Kelvin value than white daylight. As daylight is ideal for the human eye it follows that headlights with increasing colour temperature also leads to improved vision. 4000 With no increase in heat or power consumption, the combined technologies produce a higher overall luminance that results in an astounding 80% more light output and 20% whiter light, providing 100% more vision. ‘Blue Power’ offers a new level of luminance, or light on the road, to provide greatly enhanced vision and a new level of night driving safety. Blue Power Pe 3000 Through the use of new filament developments and an external coating, ‘Blue Power’ combines the benefits of the ‘Plus’ and ‘Blue’ globes. These new globes have been developed and manufactured in Germany using the most advanced manufacturing techniques. Not only have the ‘Plus’ and ‘Blue’ technologies been combined, but the light volume is now 80% greater than the standard bulb. our The benefits of Office Sunset Fire 2000 It is a matter of opinion as to what is better, more light volume, or a whiter brighter light? This conundrum often left consumers unsure about what would best suit their needs or their vehicle. However with the latest developments in globe technology Narva has managed to solve the problem for good. Candle “With Performance globes, consumers are often unsure whether to choose the WINTER 2008 EDITION 9 S E NTRY Sentry – a versatile L.E.D strobe Major triumph The unique and versatile ‘Sentry’ L.E.D warning strobe lamp is finding a host of new applications in the market from road works to industry. Powered by two common ‘D’ size dry cell batteries which provide more than 100 hours of operational life, the new safety light comes complete with a strong magnetic base, a heavy-duty cord to suspend it plus the option of a handle for use as a traffic wand. Suitable for outdoor use, the lamp can be used in any environment that requires a flashing caution signal such as in warehouses or docks, rail yards and construction sites. The ‘Sentry’ lamp has a weatherproof on/off switch plus an internal slide switch which activates a built-in light sensor for automatic day/night switching. Small in size with just 106mm base diameter and 119mm height, the lamp is light and convenient. The optional 45mm handle also fits in to the opening of large traffic cones. N When you have a reputation as Australia’s leading luxury and high performance car company, it is continually important to distinguish yourself from the pack and maintain this high profile reputation. This is exactly what HSV intended to achieve when they partnered with Narva to develop a truly unique lighting system. With the development of the E series range, HSV designers set themselves the challenge of developing a distinguishing feature that would become synonymous with the HSV brand. With much consideration, the stop/tail and indicator lamp assembly was chosen to receive special attention due to the opportunity to combine HSV race bred styling with the latest in L.E.D technology. The lamp design, developed by HSV, was a far cry from conventional lighting designs, with all new styling that could only be achieved using L.E.D technology. With a design requirement already delivered, Narva set about creating the lamp while ensuring that all ADR (Australian Design Rule) requirements and HSV body tolerances could be met. This difficult process required the development of 14 major and 5 minor manufacturing tools. To manage the sophisticated L.E.D operation, a control box PCB had to be developed which was further complicated by the need to maintain globe outage for the indicators. Expert cooperation was required between Narva and HSV to establish complete compatibility between the lamp’s control box and the VE’s BCM (Body Control Module). To bring all these components together and to guarantee quality, all lamps were assembled by hand with the most stringent quality controls in place. As there is no globe filament to fail, L.E.D lighting by nature has an exceptionally long life. To ensure the lamps last the lifetime of the vehicle, Narva selected the highest quality ultra reliable L.E.Ds for use in manufacturing. The versatility of the Sentry lamp has contributed to its popularity. 10 H SV with HSV tail lamp assembly The end result is a Narva OEM product utilising the latest lighting technology available, fully meeting the customer’s requirement and creating a vehicle enhancing rear lamp assembly that is now a signature of the R8 Club Sport, GTS and Senator vehicles. “We are extremely happy with the outcome of the rear tail lamp assembly as it has achieved all the design and performance requirements that were part of the original brief,” said Trevor Baralon, HSV Senior Electrical Engineer, “the on time delivery and level of cooperation with the team from Narva made for very smooth sailing throughout the project’s complete development and delivery period.” The challenge of producing a high end tail lamp assembly for a prestige Australian company such as HSV has been a quantum step forward in the company’s history. In meeting these demands Narva has proven to be more than an aftermarket company but one capable of meeting demanding large scale original equipment requirements of design, development, price, manufacture and delivery on time. N (Left) Once the design was finalised, many hours of testing at the Narva facility was required to ensure the lamp met all ADR requirements. WINTER 2008 EDITION 11 S P OTL I G H T O N NAR VA The Extremes we go to!!! The Narva mission statement makes mention of commitment and dedication. When it comes to supporting the product through advertising and promotion, some members of the Narva team perhaps take this a little too far at times. During recent photography shoots for the launch of the Extreme driving lamps, some interesting and perhaps comical events transpired. While taking a series of shots of the Narva 4x4 charging through the Howqua River in central Victoria, the boys decided a few shots of the river flowing across the bonnet of the car might be useful. The problem was, they left it there too long and a tow out was required. As seen in the above images, attaching a tow rope wasn’t as easy as usual. With the engine full of water, a night camping in the bush changing oil, pumping out water and cleaning parts was required to get the vehicle going again. Several weeks later the team headed out to Lake Eildon to compile photography for the Extreme magazine advertisement. This required placing the lamps, props and equipment in position without disturbing the surrounding earth to ensure a realistic image could be captured. In search of the perfect shot with the perfect lighting, the team then rose at 5am to continue their obsession with the water. The resulting advertisement, featuring now in leading 4x4 and trucking magazines, highlights the teams reward for effort.
