Welcome to Autumn/Winter at the
Showroom, we are FTB (full to
bursting) with great stuff between
now and Christmas. Not able to
mention everything here, I will select
some of my highlights and of course
encourage you to find out more
inside and online.
October is full of festivals, the
brilliant Off the Shelf and the
horrifically great Celluloid Screams
both bring fantastic films, events
and guests. With our first ever
Celluloid Screams Allnighter,
“night of the un-dead”, we will
be spending the wee hours being
spooked silly, as our zombie friends
say ‘join us!’. Also in October we
have the privilege of welcoming
world renowned filmmaker Charles
Burnett here for a master class as
part of our Black History Month
programme.
Throughout the next few months
ANDROID
CONTENTS
we will join a national celebration of
everything Gothic. From ghosts to
vampires and all spooky things in
between we are fully prepared to get
gothic!
Cinema Palestino returns for it’s fifth
year bringing film from Palestinian
filmmakers to our screens. With
opener ART:VIOLENCE bringing the
importance of culture as an act of
resistance to the forefront.
Pout is also back in December and
we will enjoy some of the best LGBT
films of the year including DocFest
Youth Jury winner GOD LOVES
UGANDA and critically acclaimed
ANY DAY NOW.
Of course we are also very excited
about the upcoming main release
programme. British cinema has a
strong season following a great
summer and national treasures
abound in LE-WEEKEND and
PHILOMENA and star director
Clio Barnard’s award winning THE
SELFISH GIANT, bringing Yorkshire
back onto cinema screens across
the country. Festival winners from
Europe are also coming to our
shores. The incredible BLUE IS
THE WARMEST COLOUR the
resounding winner at Cannes Film
Festival and subsequent winner
worldwide is sure to make waves
in the UK in November. THE
BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN
fresh from its Sensoria opening
premiere and winning audience
awards everywhere it goes, blends
bluegrass music and drama to
powerful effect.
With so much in store, I look forward
to seeing you all here!

Dir. Kevin Macdonald / 2013 / UK / 1hr 41mins
Daisy is an American teenager
with attitude - her dad sends
her away for the summer to live
with her aunt and cousins in the
English countryside. City girl
Daisy refuses at first to warm to
her new surroundings or her three
cousins. But although it looks to be
crumbling around them, the farm is
an enchanted place and they have
the run of this romantic bohemian
idyll to themselves. Their perfect
summer is blown apart by the
sudden outbreak of a 21st century
world war, leaving them isolated and
forced to fend for themselves…
SUNSHINE ON LEITH (PG)
FRIDAY 4 OCTOBER
Dir. Dexter Fletcher / 2013 / UK / 1hr 40mins
Cast: George MacKay, Peter Mullan,
Jane Horrocks
Home is where the heart is for
best pals Davy and Ally. Returning
from duty in Afghanistan to their
lifelong residence in Leith, just
outside Edinburgh, the lads kindle
romances old and new. Meanwhile,
their parents Rab and Jean are
busy planning their 25th wedding
anniversary. Everything’s going
swimmingly, until a revelation from
Rab’s past threatens to tear the
family apart. A jubilant, heartfelt
musical about the power of home,
the hearth, family and love, adapted
from the acclaimed stage musical
by Stephen Greenhorn and
featuring the euphoric music of The
Proclaimers.
FOR THOSE IN PERIL (18)
FRIDAY 11 OCTOBER
Q&A SCREENING SUNDAY 6
OCTOBER, 6.15 PM
Dir. Paul Wright / 2013 / UK / Runtime TBC /
their youthful fearlessness, lack
of responsibility and idealism. A
married couple revisit Paris to
revitalise their marriage, and run into
an old friend who acts as a catalyst
for things to come. A delicious
portrait of a marriage with all the
imperfections of a life of partnership.
THE FIFTH ESTATE
FRIDAY 11 OCTOBER
Dir. Bill Condon / 2013 / USA/Belgium /
Cert. TBC / Cast: Michael Smiley,
2hrs 4mins / Cert. TBC / Cast: Benedict
George MacKay, Kate Dickie
Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, Stanley Tucci
From the great, local Warp Films
comes this tale of a life after
tragedy in a remote Scottish village.
As the only survivor of a fishing
accident, Aaron is left facing a
critical community and his own
demons as he tries and fails to
cope with life after loss. Strong
directing in Paul Wright’s feature and
fantastic performances create the
claustrophobia of the coastal village
and the blurred lines between sanity
and insanity, truth and fantasy. Or
are they fantasies at all?
A look at the relationship between
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange
and his early supporter and eventual
colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg,
and how the website’s growth and
influence led to an irreparable rift
between the two friends. Benedict
Cumberbatch gives an uncanny
performance as Assange in a
film that unpicks the Wikileaks
controversy in the way that The
Social Network uncovered the story
behind Facebook.
LE WEEK-END (15)
FRIDAY 11 OCTOBER
Dir. Roger Michell / 2013 / UK / 1hr 33mins
Cast: Jeff Goldblum, Jim Broadbent,

Set to a brilliant bluegrass
soundtrack this story of one
couple’s life together is a dramatic
tour de force. Elise and Didier strike
up the most passionate, intense
relationship; love at first sight, which
comes even closer through their
bluegrass music band, eventually
leading to the joy of parenthood
with the birth of beautiful Maybelle.
When tragedy strikes, love, faith and
their relationship are put to the test.
Scooping awards wherever it goes,
this is definitely one of the Autumn’s
highlights.
LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON
FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER
Dir. Hirokazu Koreeda / 2013 / Japan / 2hrs
/ Cert. TBC / Subtitled / Cast: Masaharu
Fukuyama, Machiko Ono, Yôko Maki
Hard working family man, Ryota,
and his wife Midori, receive an
unexpected phone call from the
hospital. Their 6-year-old son is not
‘their’ son - the hospital gave them
the wrong baby. Ryota is forced
to make a life-changing decision,
to choose between ‘nature’ and
‘nurture.’ Winner of the Jury Prize at
Cannes Film Festival 2013, from the
acclaimed director of Still Walking
and I Wish.
4
A multi-layered examination of the
2009 hijacking of the U.S. container
ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of
Somali pirates. Through Greengrass’
distinctive lens it is simultaneously
a pulse-pounding thriller and a
complex portrait of the myriad
effects of globalization. The film
focuses on the relationship between
the Alabama’s commanding officer,
Captain Richard Phillips and his
Somali counterpart, Muse. Set on an
incontrovertible collision course off
the coast of Somalia, both men will
find themselves paying the human
toll for economic forces outside of
their control.
THE SELFISH GIANT (15)
FRIDAY 25 OCTOBER
Dir. Clio Barnard / 2013 / UK / 1hr 31mins
Cast: Conner Chapman, Shaun Thomas,
Sean Gilder
Clio Barnard’s highly anticipated
follow up to The Arbor doesn’t
disappoint. In the great tradition
of British Social Realism, Barnard
brings Oscar Wilde’s fable up to
date, and right here, in Yorkshire.
Two young boys Arbor (a reference
to her first film?) and Swifty, living
at the edge of safety and society,
become involved in the illegal scrap
trade and horse and cart racing.
Tension and tragedy are always just
around the corner for these teenage
boys and their families.

Gloria is 58 years old and still
feels young. Making a party out of
her loneliness, she fills her nights
seeking love in ballrooms for single
adults. This fragile happiness
changes the day she meets Rodolfo.
Their intense passion leaves her
dancing between hope and despair.
Gloria will have to pull herself
together and find a new strength to
realise that, in the last act of her life,
she could burn brighter than ever.
PHILOMENA (12A)
Dir. Stephen Frears / 2013 / UK/USA / 1hr
38mins / Cast: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan,
Charlie Murphy
Falling pregnant as a teenager in
Ireland in 1952, Philomena Lee
was sent to a convent to be looked
after as a “fallen woman”, where
her son was whisked away by
the nuns to America for adoption.
Philomena spent the next fifty
years searching for him in vain.
Then she met Martin Sixsmith, a
world-weary journalist, and together
they set off on a journey that would
not only reveal the extraordinary
story of Philomena’s son, but also
the powerful bond that grew up
between Philomena and Martin – a
surprising relationship that was both
profoundly moving and very funny.
GRAVITY(12A)
Dir. Alfonso Caurón / 2013 / USA/UK / 1hr
31mins / Cast: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney,
Eric Michels
A heart-pounding thriller that
pulls you into the infinite and
unforgiving realm of deep space.
Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a
brilliant medical engineer on her
first shuttle mission, with veteran
astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney)
in command of his last flight before
retiring. But on a seemingly routine
spacewalk, disaster strikes. The
shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone
and Kowalsky completely alone
- tethered to nothing but each
other and spiralling out into the
blackness…

PARKLAND
Dir. Peter Landesman / 2013 / USA / 1hr 33mins
/ Cert. TBC / Cast: Zac Efron, Paul Giamatti,
Jacki Weaver
Recounting the chaotic events
that occurred in Dallas, Texas on
November 22, 1963, Parkland
weaves together the perspectives
of a handful of ordinary individuals
suddenly thrust into extraordinary
circumstances: the young doctors
and nurses at Parkland Hospital,
Dallas’ chief of the Secret Service,
an unwitting cameraman who
captured what became the most
watched and examined film in
history; the FBI agents who nearly
had the gunman within their grasp,
the brother of Lee Harvey Oswald left to deal with his shattered family.
All is Lost

ALL IS LOST (12A)
Cert. TBC / Subtitled / Cast: Léa Seydoux, Adèle
Deep into a solo voyage in the
Indian Ocean, an unnamed man
wakes to find his 39-foot yacht
taking on water after a collision with
a shipping container left floating on
the high seas. With his navigation
equipment and radio disabled, the
man sails unknowingly into the path
of a violent storm. With the sun
unrelenting, sharks circling and his
meagre supplies dwindling, the everresourceful sailor soon finds himself
staring his mortality in the face.
Dir. Abdellatif Kechiche / 2013 / France / 3hrs /
Exarchopoulos, Salim Kechiouche
Palme D’Or winning ‘La Vie D’Adele’
is released here in the UK with a
new title but thankfully no other
changes. This brilliant film tells the
story of Adele, growing up from 16
to her mid-twenties, discovering
herself, her sexuality, love and life
with her soul mate. Such honest and
moving a love story is rarely seen.
With all of life’s ups and downs
Adele travels through, this film will
take you with her as she becomes
an adult.
Dir. J.C. Chandor / 2013 / USA / 1hr 46mins
Cast: Robert Redford
THE COUNSELLOR
Dir. Ridley Scott / 2013 / USA/UK / Runtime
TBC / Cert. TBC / Cast: Brad Pitt, Michael
Fassbender, Penélope Cruz
Legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott

Cormac McCarthy (No Country

quintessential Christmas family film.

BLACK
HISTORY
MONTH
A landmark of American cinema, this
uniquely truthful depiction of black
life in early 1960s Alabama rightly
won great acclaim though it then
sank into relative obscurity. When railroad labourer Duff meets
teacher Josie, he decides it’s time
to settle down to marriage and a
factory job. Trouble is, he’s expected
to tolerate white bosses who,
wittingly or not, are unfailingly racist,
and Duff has his pride.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (PG)
THURSDAY 28 NOVEMBER, 6.30PM
Dir. Robert Mulligan / 1962 / USA / 2hrs 4mins
Cast: Gregory Peck, John Megna, Frank Overton
Introduced by Miranda Fricker
The year is 1935, and the scene
a courtroom in Maycomb County,
Alabama. The defendant is a young
black man named Tom Robinson,
charged with raping a white girl.
The evidence makes it plain that
Robinson is innocent. But the racial
prejudice at work in the all-white
jury distorts their perception of him,
deflating the level of credibility they
give his word.
Followed by discussion on the
structure of this ‘epistemic injustice’
and its different possible forms.

MONDAY 21 OCTOBER, 6.30PM
Dir. Mel Gibson / 2006 / USA / 2hrs 15mins /
Subtitled
A film about a Maya man who
flees from human sacrifice, best
known for its horror and dramatic
chase scenes, it was extremely
controversial for its garbled and
sometimes derogatory portrayal of
the Maya and raises challenging
questions about relative morality.
Aztec historian and specialist in
human sacrifice, Caroline Dodds
Pennock, introduces the film and
leads a discussion.

MONDAY 18 NOVEMBER,
Dir. Carlos Saura / 1991 / Spain/Italy / 1hr

Mary Vincent, an expert on the
Spanish Civil War, introduces Carlos
Saura’s Ay Carmela!, the story of a
small Republican vaudeville troupe
that mistakenly crosses enemy lines
and has to perform for Francoist
soldiers instead. Funny and
sentimental but never shying away
from the brutality of the Republican
defeat, it gives an unusually direct
account of the Civil War.
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (PG)
SUNDAY 15 DECEMBER, 1PM
Dir. David Lean / 1962 / UK / 3hrs 43mins
A sweeping historical epic depicting
British officer T.E. Lawrence’s role
in the Arab Revolt during WWI.
Lean’s masterpiece, completed as
the sun set on the British Empire,
movingly captures both Lawrence’s
love affair with ‘Arabia’ and Britain’s
imperial division of the Middle
East, the results of which live on in
contemporary political conflict..

latest film to audiences as a unique
theatrical experience, combining his

Show. There is a mysterious island

many lighthouses, it’s becoming

beach erosion threatening its very
foundations, it’s soon going to be
a pile of rubble left to fall into the

Original score by Jóhann
Jóhannsson, produced by Forma.
The former coal mining communities

Using rarely-seen archive footage,
The Miners’ Hymns celebrates
social, cultural, and political aspects
of the extinct industry. Focusing
on the Durham coalfield, it depicts
the hardship of pit work, increasing
mechanisation, the role of trade
unions in organising and fighting
for workers’ rights, and their annual
Miners’ Gala in Durham.

These three features describe an arc
through 1960s film: from the kitchen
sink (A Taste of Honey) through
the snappy, swinging style of the
mid-sixties (The Knack …and How
to Get It) to the jaded realisation
that success and fame lead to
loss (Charlie Bubbles). We want to
question what was lost along the way
and at what cost? Or, in other words,
what does it profit a people if they
gain a groovy scene, but lose their
soul? The films have been selected
to explore the shared ground
between social realism and fantasy.
Not only do they describe trends in
British filmmaking, they also describe
British society in the 1960s.
We chose the title Subverse Britannia
because it suggests movement
beneath a strong identity. It’s an
ambiguous title. Just as subversion
is not always negative, other empires
flourish as Britain’s declines: America
and desire, cinema itself, the media
and the self. The films open up a
space where we can think and reflect
about 20th century Britain. What
did the aftermath of the Second
World War and the intensification of
consumerism bring? A complicated
question that provokes discussion on

class, sexuality and social change.
Perhaps there are no stable or
definite answers.
All of the films in this second
instalment of Subverse Britannia
deal with class, sexuality and social
change. Despite similarities between
actors and writers all approach their
themes with contrasting tones and
registers, indicative of the scope
of British film making in the 1960s.
Each screening is introduced and
then followed by a discussion.
The course is interdisciplinary,
constructed by three curators
with different interests. As such,
the material is exploratory: it does
not seek to teach established film
studies themes, but to suggest new
alignments and readings. The input
of those attending will be essential.
A TASTE OF HONEY (12)
SUNDAY 10 NOVEMBER, 2PM
Dir. Tony Richardson / 1961 / UK / 1hr 36mins
Cast: Rita Tushingham, Dora Bryan,
Murray Melvin
The kitchen sink at its warmest and
most human, this once seemed an
entirely new way of making films in
Britain: real people, real locations,
real situations, real dialogue. Written
by 23-year-old Shelagh Delaney, the
film tackles taboo subjects (race,
teenage pregnancy, homosexuality)
without ever moralising or trying to
shock.
THE KNACK…
AND HOW TO GET IT (15)
SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER, 2PM
Dir. Richard Lester / 1965 / UK / 1hr 25mins
Cast: Rita Tushingham, Ray Brooks,
Michael Crawford
It’s 1965, and London is beginning
to swing. This is ostensibly a wacky
sex comedy with a great soundtrack
by the marvellous John Barry, but
there’s something sinister lurking in
its narrative of provincial naïfs adrift
in the city, at the mercy of black
leather glove wearing predators and
the pressures of doing the ‘in thing’.

Dir. Albert Finney / 1967 / UK / 1hr 27mins
Cast: Albert Finney, Liza Minelli, Colin Blakely
An underrated account of the
sixties experience, a tumultuous
decade in which working class
artists were suddenly propelled to
the forefront of society. But what
happens when they get there?
And to those they leave behind? A
fascinating study of alienation shot
through with mordant humour and a
bittersweet quality that culminates in
a magnificently odd finale.

As close to Bram Stoker’s book

you might expect in a film where the

Dir. T. Hayes Hunter / 1933 / UK / 1hr 8mins
The first film to be rated ‘H’ for
‘Horrific’ by the British Board of
Film Classification, The Ghoul was
considered lost for many years
until the negatives were unearthed
in the early 1980s and the BFI
restored it to its former glory. Boris
Karloff plays eccentric Egyptologist,
Professor Morlant, who returns
from the grave to haunt the next
generation.
NIGHT OF THE DEMON (PG)
+ DJ SET
SATURDAY 2 NOVEMBER, 6.30PM
Dir. Dir. Jacques Tourneur / 1957 / UK /
1hr 31mins
The scariest British horror film
ever made has something for
everyone interested in the macabre:
black magic, hypnosis, murder, a
clown who causes weird weather,
Stonehenge and the Reading Room
of the British Museum. Oh, and
a massive, vengeful demon. The
suspenseful script was adapted
from an M.R. James short story
and expertly directed by Jacques
Tourneur, and is presented here
in its brand new digital glory.
Horror fan Paul Bareham will
be introducing the film and the
Eccentronic Research Council will
be providing a typically eclectic
Science vs. Magic DJ-set in
the Showroom Bar afterwards.
Unmissable!
ROSEMARY’S BABY (18)
TUESDAY 5 NOVEMBER, 8.30PM
Dir. Roman Polanski / 1968 / USA / 2hs 11mins
Polakski’s chilling cult classic about
a young woman (Mia Farrow) who
comes to believe she is carrying a
demonic baby plays on the anxieties
of mother-to-be to horrifying effect.
“Arguably the finest American horror
movie of the 1960s” – Film4
‘Witchfinder General’ to stamp out
sorcery through whatever means
necessary…
Condemned as “sadistic” on its
release, the film is now considered
to be a true classic with enduring
pertinence.
THE DEVIL RIDES OUT (15)
TUESDAY 26 NOVEMBER, 8.30PM
Dir. Terence Fisher / 1968 / UK / 1hr 31mins
When his friend Simon starts
acting in a peculiar manner, Duc de
Richleau (Christopher Lee) discovers
Simon has fallen into the clutches of
a Satanic cult and his soul may be
lost forever unless Richleau takes on
the Devil himself…
GHOST STORIES AT
CHRISTMAS: PART 1
TUESDAY 3 DECEMBER, 8.30PM
From the stories of M.R James,
these tales of the gothic adapted
by the BBC in the 60s and 70s will
be a rare treat on the big screen.
WHISTLE & I’LL COME TO YOU,
LOST HEARTS & STIGMA make up
part one of this spooky Christmas
treat.
DON’T LOOK NOW (15)
TUESDAY 10 DECEMBER, 8.30PM
Dir. Nicolas Roeg / 1973 / UK / 1hr 46mins
WITCHFINDER GENERAL (15)
TUESDAY 19 NOVEMBER, 8.30PM
Dir. Michael Reeves / 1968 / UK / 1hr 22mins
Set during the turbulence of the
English Civil War of the 17th
century where superstition and
mass hysteria are rife, Matthew
Hopkins (Vincent Price) is appointed
A truly chilling thriller examining
the deep psychological impact of
grief, set against an atmospherically
misty Venetian backdrop. “It’s a
ghost story; it’s a meditation on
time, memory and the poignancy
of married love. And it’s a
masterpiece.” – Peter Bradshaw,
The Guardian
GOTHIC SHORTS
1966-1980 / 1hr in total
This selection of Svankmajer
shorts features tributes to Horace
Walpole’s Castle of Otranto (widely
regarded as the first gothic novel)
and the works of Edgar Allan Poe,
revealing Svankmajer’s fascination
with the gothic. The re-telling of
these macabre tales is rendered
particularly uncomfortable by the
subjective camera positions that
place the audience in the position of
the victim.
FAUST (12A)
1994 / Czech Republic / 1hr 36mins
A fantastical retelling of the Faust
fable and a tour-de-force of black
magic and black humour in which
a man’s wanderings through
the streets of Prague lead to a
cellar, a tattered copy of Goethe’s
Faust and a confrontation with
Mephistopheles. A rich blend of life
sized marionettes, claymation, and
live action reveals Svankmajer’s
singular talents at their unsettling
finest.
Michael Brooke is the producer of
the BFI’s Svankmajer box set. He
is author of a chapter on Eastern
European Gothic in the forthcoming
BFI Gothic publication.
