Mary Ellen Falzone Diabetes Center.
The Promedica Toledo Hospital Family Medicine Residency's proposal for a workshop entitled Heart
Sounds for the Family Physician has been accepted for presentation at the AAFP National Conference for

Mon General Hospital
Mon General Hospital has been named as one of “100 Hospitals with Great Orthopedic Programs for
2013” by Becker’s Hospital Review.
“The hospitals included on this list have orthopedic surgery departments, programs or dedicated
centers that have earned considerable recognition,” according to the December 2013 Becker’s Hospital
Review article.
“Mon General has a highly experienced team of orthopedic surgeons and nursing personnel and, quite
frankly, we often take them for granted,” said Mon Health System President and CEO Darryl Duncan.
“These people are some of the very best in the country.
“This recognition is well deserved and should demonstrate to the community we serve that when you
come to Mon General, you’re at one of the best orthopedic centers in the nation,” Duncan said.
The Becker’s article states that “in light of a 20 percent increase in orthopedic procedures performed at
the hospital over five years, Mon General opened a new orthopedic center in 2012. The hospital is home
to one of the largest networks of orthopedic surgeons out of any hospital in West Virginia, and more
than 3,600 orthopedic procedures are performed there each year. The hospital has been recognized by
Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacements.”
Becker’s Hospital Review features business and legal news and analysis relating to hospitals and health
systems. To devise the list, the Becker’s editorial team weighed a variety of rankings and recognitions
and conducted research to find the 100 hospitals with great orthopedic programs.

The CAMC Health Education and Research Institute has received notification from the American
Osteopathic Association that their application for continued accreditation for their AOA CME program
was reviewed by the AOA Council for CME at their meeting in October, 2013. The Council has
informed the CAMC Institute that the institution has passed the document survey review with a score
of 100 points. In accordance with AOA Accreditation Requirements for CME Category 1 CME Sponsors,
CME sponsors with 95 points or more are awarded accreditation for a 3-year period. Therefore, the
Council on CME AWARDS CAMC Health Education & Research Institute Three-Years Level 3
Accreditation with Commendation accreditation as a Category 1 CME Sponsor based upon the 100
point score review. Institutions that score above 95 points on the document review survey must
include outcomes measurement data on a least one education offering provided during the review
period.
James P. Tierney, D.O., WVSOM’s Distinguished Alumnus for 2014
During the West Virginia School of Osteopathic
Medicine's 31st annual Mid-Winter
Osteopathic Seminar held Jan. 31 – Feb. 2 in
Charleston, W.Va., it was announced that James
P. Tierney, D.O., Class of 1980, is WVSOM's
Distinguished Alumnus for 2014.
The award was introduced by Mark Casdorph,
D.O., WVSOM Class of 1990, a family
psychiatrist based in Charleston. In his
remarks, Dr. Casdorph described Tierney as a
"super highway for people to follow." He cited
Tierney's commitment to excellence in
medicine, his dedication to teaching,
recognition of his work from the International
Journal of Urology and Tierney's success
creating a nationally recognized residency
program in osteopathic urology as just a few highlights of his exemplary leadership.
Dr. Tierney is board certified by the American Board of Urology. He is the Chairman and Program
Director of Urology at the Charleston Area Medical Center and also the Medical Director of CAMC
Physicians Group. He has been recognized by The Journal of Urology for surgical research on handassisted laparoscopic kidney surgery. At CAMC, in 1992, he was involved in establishing Surgicare
outpatient surgical care.
Accepting his award, a commemorative Blenko glass pitcher that bears the WVSOM Alumni Association
seal, Tierney commented on how far the profession has grown since his days as a medical student.
"Doctors of osteopathic medicine now represent 20 percent of practicing physicians in this country and
those numbers are rising," Tierney said. "It's exciting to watch WVSOM grow in reputation and
excellence. To receive this recognition is humbling and I'll remember it forever."
The WVSOM Alumni Association established the Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award in 2008 to
annually recognize graduates of the school who have distinguished themselves through outstanding
personal and professional achievements.

Greenbrier Valley Medical Center
Greenbrier Valley Medical Center has recently received Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain
Centers (SCPC), in recognition of the hospital’s commitment to the highest standards in the country for heart failure
care.
The recognition signifies a new era in heart care for the Greenbrier Valley. SCPC is different from other accreditation
processes: instead of publishing criteria and then judging hospital compliance, SCPC provides hospitals with evaluation
tools to examine current operations and promote continual improvement in cardiac care.
“Greenbrier Valley Medical Center is committed to making our heart care program the best it can be – and this means
pursuing a path of continual improvement: ongoing evaluation of our clinical practices, and investing the latest tools,
techniques and innovations,” says Robert Calhoun, CEO of Greenbrier Valley Medical Center “When the people who live
and work in Greenbrier County think about quality heart care, we want them to think of Greenbrier Valley Medical
Center.”
Chest Pain Center accreditation encompasses many facets of the hospital’s heart care program: direct patient care,
clinical education and strategic planning for future program development. As an accredited Chest Pain Center,
Greenbrier Valley Medical Center regularly undergoes onsite review of its operations and patient care processes by a
panel of SCPC experts.
Chest Pain Center accreditation also links Greenbrier Valley Medical Center with other medical specialties and
emergency services – such as EMS, emergency medicine and dispatch services in the area. These integrated relationships
mean shorter response times, more seamless communication between emergency responders, and expedited treatment
for cardiac patients – when minutes count.
