Mumbai special court on Friday convicted 12 of the
13 accused in the 2006 Mumbai trains blasts case.
Faisal Sheikh and Asif Khan Bashir Khan alias Junaid, identified as main conspirators, were among those
convicted. Wahid, was only person acquitted.
The accused were charged under the Maharashtra
Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), Indian Penal
Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Explosives
Act, Explosive Substances Act, Prevention of Damage to
Public Property Act, The Railways Act, and Passport Act
As per the prosecution’s case, the accused were activists of the
banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). They held
several conspiratorial meetings at Sheikh’s house in Bandra and
at another accused’s house in Mira Road, where they decided
to target local trains as they were crowded and security was not
as tight as for the other sites they had surveyed.
Starting 6.24 p.m. on 11 July, 2006, seven blasts ripped
through the first class compartments of the trains at
Matunga, Mahim, Bandra, Jogeshwari, Borivali and Mira
Road stations. Meanwhile in Chandigarh, emphasising the
need for holistic and preventive healthcare, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi today said that time has come to think
about wellness rather than illness. ‘The time has passed
for (only) addressing (the issue of) illness, (rather) time has
come to address wellness.... We will have to move ahead
with a comprehensive thought, in which we should address
wellness and well-being and not only illness,’ he said.

M BHASKAR SAI
Chennai, Sept 11:
How about two days overtaking
two decades? This is what precisely
happened at the Global Investors
Meet (GIM) that concluded in the
city Thursday, as efforts by Chief
Minister J Jayalalithaa have brought
in Rs 2,42,160 crore investment to
Tamilnadu, exceeding the cumulative
investment made in the State over the

Operation Hamla
gets underway
q ‘Terrorists’ nabbed across Tamilnadu
NT Bureau
Chennai, Sept 11:
The anti-terror security exercise
carried out by the State and Central
agencies on land and sea, codenamed ‘Operation Hamla’, began
this morning.
It may be noted that the operation
is a joint effort by the Navy, Coast
Guard, Marine police, city police,
Customs and Fisheries department,
to check the preparedness of the
State in reacting to an incidence of
infiltration through sea lines or the targeting any vital installation in the city.
The mock drill began to be implemented after the Mumbai terror attacks
in 2008, and is a routine activity, where
policemen would masquerade as terrorists and strike at different places, and
even plant bombs. The police and other
forces would be kept in the dark of the
number of ‘terrorists’ and their plans.
According to a senior police official,
24 such intruders have been nabbed
at the coastal belt in Nagapattinam,
Rameshwaram and Mahabalipuram.
‘They were entering the area
through the sea when we caught
them. The exercise will go on till the
night of 12 September’, he said.
Similarly, several other terrorists
have been caught at various parts of
the State, sources said. The coastal
police force also includes fishermen
who would tip-off the department if
they came across any suspicious activity or alien presence in the waters.
Last year, the uniformed men were in
for a surprise when the terrorists targeted
an off-shore oil platform, thus testing their
alertness, the official added.
A city police Inspector who is part
of the exercise said, the drill will
include checks on the border check
points in city, vital locations like malls,
business zones including shopping
destinations like T Nagar, embassies
and Metro stations, which are likely
to be targeted’.
‘Operation Hamla’ is carried out
every six months, however, it could
not take place as per schedule on 8
June as a patrolling aircraft-Dornier
carrying three crew members went
off the radar. It was fished out of the
Tamilnadu coast after a month-long
intense search.

Jayalalithaa is at it again. This time,
the new record set by her will mark a
new beginning in the lives of tens of
thousands besides putting Tamilnadu
on the top of industrial development,
as funds will flow in, factories will be
set up, jobs will be created and growth
will be ensured.
When we talk about growth, this
time it is not going to be centred
around Chennai and its neighbouring
districts alone.
In Jayalalithaa’s own words, ‘My
government believes in balanced
industrial development across the
State. Hence I introduced a very
attractive package of incentives to
encourage investors to go to the
southern districts of Tamilnadu.
This strategy has paid rich dividends and out of Rs 1,04,286 crore
worth of MoUs having been signed
in the manufacturing sector alone,
almost 50 per cent of the investment has been committed for the
southern districts. The ambitious
and visionary Madurai-Thoothukudi
Industrial Corridor Project which I
had envisioned and approved has
received a massive boost with the
investment commitments we have
received today.’
And again, growth is not going to be
specific to one or two industries alone.
For, apart from traditional sectors like
textiles and auto, MoUs have been
signed in IT, renewable energy and
fisheries etc.
Also, the long time charge that
industrial development is being
made at the cost of agriculture
has been done away with, as Rs
800 crore worth investment
has been made in agriculture
alone.
The icing on the cake is, the
Global Investors Meet is just a
beginning as the Chief Minister
has announced that it would
be conducted once every two
years henceforth. Also, in a
trailer to things to come, she
said, ‘my government would
come out shortly with pragmatic
far-sighted policies in areas
like information technology and
information technology-enabled
services; electronic hardware
manufacturing and aerospace
and defence production.’
Pegasus, the logo of GIM, may
be an imagination (in Greek mythology). But the benefits the GIM
are going to generate is certainly
not fiction.

Unleashing the power of Sanskrit
q ‘Language can be instrument for national integration' q Three-day language summit gets underway in city
S VISHNU SHARMA
Chennai, Sept 11:
The three-day Sanskrit Sammelan
began at Meenakshi College For
Women here today with eminent
personalities from various walks
of life coming together on a single
platform to heap praise on the ancient language and its relevance in
the modern day.
Former ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan said great knowledge
possessed by Indians in the ancient
times in the field of medicine had
its in roots in Sanskrit, a language
which had many scholarly compositions on many other topics.
While many compositions of musical giants like Thyagaraja were in
Telugu, the most important ones
like Jagadanandakaraka and Samajavaragamana were in Sanskrit.
It is in the same language that
Chanakya’s Artha Sashtra offers
valuble lessons on management
and political affairs. Sanskrit
has managed to move into various other languages of India. In
Malaysia, while Tamil is considered as the ‘mother’, Sanskrit
is considered the ‘father’. Many
Sanskrit words are found in Malayalam and other languages.
Though Oriya language has no
Sanskrit words, the grammar
format of it is based on Sanskrit,
he pointed out.
All-India organising secretary
of Samskrita Bharati Dinesh Kazakh said the ancient language is
a vehicle for national integration.
He also said the ancient language
was not restricted to higher strata
(Brahmins).
Scholars like Kalidasa and Vyasa

across 40 countries outside India,
the teaching of the ancient language
was yet to pick up pace.
Further, he said that it was
good to note that over three
crore students were learning
Sanskrit in India, it would be
better if these numbers went up
significantly.
Radhakrishnan also released
a book ‘Meghadootam’, the first
copy of which was received by
managing director of Adwaith

Former Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalswami, secretary
of Meenakshi College for Women

after the fixing of LEDs.
An official from Ward 132 said, ‘As
of now 250 LED lamps (40 Watts)
have been installed at many streets
at Ashok Nagar including First Avenue, Fourth Avenue and Sixteenth
Avenue. Also, 10 LED lamps (140
Watts) have been fixed near Ashok
Pillar bus stand and Metro Rail Station’.
The official further said, 500 more
LED lamps will be fixed at Ashok
Nagar. ‘We are waiting for the tender clearance. Once it is approved,
the lamps would be fixed covering all
streets in the locality. By this 90 per
cent of sodium vapour lamps would
be replaced with LED lamps,’ he said.
Asked about whether the existing
lamp posts would be replaced for the
LEDs, the official said a survey would
be taken and based on it, the rusted
ones will be replaced.

‘NDA IS DELIVERING ON ITS PROMISES’
q BJP leader says party getting ready for TN Assembly polls
M BHARAT KUMAR
Chennai, Sept 11:
‘In little over a year, the NDA
government led by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi has started delivering on its promises. Greater foreign
inflows, implementation of OROP,
inflation coming down and many
pro-poor schemes have brought
cheer among people’, said vicepresident of Tamilnadu BJP M
Chakravarthy.
Speaking to News Today, he
said, ‘Modi sarkar has brought
good days back in the country.
After a decade of misrule by the
UPA, people wanted a change
and when we got the mandate,
we ensured that we lived up to
their expectations’.
A native of Tiruttani, Chakravarthy, an entrepreneur by himself, said, ‘today the climate for
doing business in the country
is good. Modi’s clean image has
propelled industrial and economic
growth’.
With just a few months to go for
Assembly elections in Tamilnadu,
he said that he has his task cut out.
‘We are preparing ourselves to put
up a good show here’.
Excerpts of his interview
Q: What are the major achievements of Modi government?
A: When Modi took charge as Prime
Minister, the nation was in complete
crisis. There was policy paralysis. But
his shrewd administrative skills and
vast experience ensured things took
a U-turn for good. Many schemes
for the welfare of commonman like
Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima
Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri
Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and
Atal Pension Yojana (APY) are being
implemented. Bank accounts were
opened for many in rural areas un-
cessfully brought changes and established a transparent model for
reforms. Decisiveness even in the
face of obstructionism has been an
important hallmark of the Modi led
government. In almost all spheres,
the growth has been phenomenal.
Q: On criticism against Modi’s
frequent foreign trips?
bia, have expressed desire to work
closely with us. During his visits, he
has interacted with world leaders,
due to which India’s image has
improved and now it occupies a
pre-eminent place in the global
stage. Also foreign inflows have
increased considerably.

A: It is an irony that someone who
is not interested in politics is being
compelled to stay on. Congress
perhaps wants to continue dynasty
politics. He makes noise one day
and disappears the next day.
Q: On corruption charges
against a few NDA Ministers?
A: There is no corruption in NDA
government. Under Modi’s suprevision, efficiency has increased.
Sushma Swaraj, Vasudhara Raje
and Shivaraj Chouhan are not
tainted. The recent success in
Municipal polls in Rajasthan and
Madhya Pradesh vindicates our
stand.
Q: On the forthcoming Assembly elections in Tamilnadu?
A: It is too early to make any comment. We have been strengthening
our base in Tamilnadu and enrolement of members are on. I have
been personally touring interior
parts of Tamilnadu to take the good
measures of the NDA government to
the masses. The mood among the

Chennai, Sept 11:
Eco Club students of Sri Kanyaga
Parameswari Arts & Science College
for Women, Parry’s, visited the ‘Enviro Home’ of Indrakumar at Pammal.
It turned out to be an eye-opener on
how to ‘Live with Nature.’
A press note said the girls expressed their happiness over the
practices and vowed to carry out
it at their homes and also impress
upon their neighbours also to follow
the same.
A few of them -- Selvi. Monisha,
Swetha, Thamizh Selvi and Rajeswari
said that a solution to garbage disposal/management is in one’s hand.
‘We have to be responsible in not
mixing garbage at home, use perishable waste at home for composting
through simple - inexpensive
composting through aerobic or
vermin-composting methods and
handing over recyclable wastes
to rag-pickers (who make a living
out of this) for appropriate recycling. By doing so, accumulation
of waste at streets is eliminated,’
they said.
Also, the students were excited to
visit the terrace garden with varieties
of medicinal, flowering, vegetable
and green plants for our day-to-day
use in a small place.
The programme and field visit was

Chennai, Sept 11:
Indian men and women are
equally at risk of heart disease, according to a recent study published
in the medical journal Lancet. The
study that also found that men and
women live longer, said ischemic
heart disease is the leading cause
for illness among both sexes.
‘The relative contribution of
ischemic heart disease to the disease burden in India has doubled
over the past 25 years, making it
the leading cause of health loss
among both men and women in
India presently,’ said Dr K Srinath
Reddy, president of Public Health
Foundation of India (PHFI) and
member of the Global Burden of
Disease (GBD) Scientific Council.
‘Major health system and policy
shifts for more effective preventive and curative ap-
proaches for heart disease are
needed in India to curtail this trend.’
Classifying the health ratio as
Healthy Life Expectancy (HLE) and
Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY),
the study reveals that the longevity
of life in India has increased but with
DALY. Healthy life expectancy takes
into account not just mortality but the
impact of non-fatal conditions and
summarises years lived with disability and years lost due to premature
mortality.
In India, life expectancy increased
by 6.9 years for men between 1990
and 2013 and 10.3 years for women
in the same period. But healthy life
expectancy increased by less: men
gained 6.4 years and women gained
8.9 years. Life expectancy for women
in India still outpaces that of men 68.5 years compared to 64.2 years.
‘Lifestyle and nutrition changes
are the reasons for this
condition,’ says BARC
Hospital Professor Dr
Nobhijit Roy who coauthored the study. In

Panniyammakal, says that reduced
intake of salt at a younger age can
help reduce the risk of heart diseases.
‘We acquire taste over time. Namkeen, pickles and pappad contain
additional salt that can be avoided.
Taking lesser salt since childhood
can protect the arteries because by
the time a person becomes an adult,
the amount of salt he had consumed
results in the thickness of the arteries,’ he says.
As for iron deficiency and anaemia that are common among Indian women, Dr Jeemon says
that green vegetables should be
sold at affordable rates as
they are rich in iron that is
a vital nutrient for women.
‘While oral iron supplements are
good, intravenous ones can
cause side-effects and must
be taken only on doctor’s
prescription,’ he adds.
Other major causes for DALY in
India are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lower
respiratory infections, tuberculosis and neonatal disorders.

Battle for Bihar
T
he battle for Bihar will have repercussions far beyond its
borders. The outcome can advance or retard, depending on
who emerges the winner, the process of economic reforms and
development. Also, Rahul Gandhi’s irrational and unthinking
disruptionist politics will suffer a grievous blow should the NDA
emerge victorious. On the other hand, a good showing by the
JD(U)-RJD-Congress combine can prove a setback for the Modi
Government. Bihar, the crucible of Hindi heartland politics, has
never witnessed such a fierce contest in recent years. The battle
acquired a personal edge when the outgoing Chief Minister
Nitish Kumar gambled on opposing the rise of Modi in the BJP.
A bruised and beaten Nitish felt obliged to quit the NDA and
made peace with his bitter rival Lalu Prasad Yadav. Worse, he
wooed the Congress Party opposing which he had grown in
politics. Now that the poll schedule has been announced, there
will be much to-ing and fro-ing from the rival fronts. Cracks
have already appeared in the so-called Grand Alliance with
Mulayam Singh walking out in a fit of rage. He has questioned
the secular credentials of Nitish, reminding him that he was in
bed with the same BJP for over 17 years. Lalu is unlikely to play
ball with Nitish on the question of ticket-distribution. Distrust
and antipathy persist among the erstwhile foes forced by the fear
of BJP to temporarily suspend the fight.
It is not in Lalu’s interest to help Nitish win and then
countenance a minor role for self and his sons who have now
begun to play an active role in the family-controlled RJD. A
Nitish win will enhance his stature nationally, something neither
Lalu nor Mulayam would desire. Therefore, despite the show of
camaraderie, internal sabotage by Lalu cannot be ruled out. As
for the Congress, it has little presence in Bihar. Why it has been
given 40 seats by the dominant alliance partners is a mystery
even to the Congress leadership. Maybe both Lalu and Nitish
would field their own candidates on the Congress symbol and
the arrangement was designed to avoid a dog-fight on the seats
allotted to the Congress.
The BJP will have its own problems apportioning seats among
allies. Public recriminations between Jitin Ram Manjhi and Ram
Bilas Paswan, both Dalit leaders, indicate a difficult task for
the NDA’s anchor constituent. In the no-holds-barred contest,
the rival fronts will leave nothing to chance. Caste and social
justice will be key factors, while the NDA under Modi has also
laid equal stress on development. With Nitish and Lalu between
them having ruled Bihar for 25 years, their claim to provide
good governance remains open to question. Though the poll
outcome is always hard to call, as of now, the NDA seems to be
ahead, both in terms of poll preparations and caste-consolidation
in a state where it has always been a major factor.

How has terrorism changed
in the past 14 years?
q Rewind
WASHINGTON:
In the 14 years since the 9/11
attacks, the face of terrorism has
changed out of recognition. To many
experts, the threat of Islamist terror
is in some ways greater and in some
ways diminished. It is geographically
more diverse and organizationally
more divided, and leverages social
media and the internet in a way
impossible in 2001.
In the West, Islamist terrorism is
often more inspired than organized
and directed. Its menace is also
more fluid and unpredictable than it
was on that bright autumn morning
in 2001, but the tools to combat it
are also more plentiful, from ever
more sophisticated and accurate
drones to financial intelligence and
algorithms for chewing terabytes
of data in the pursuit of suspicious
communications.
The likelihood of an attack on the
scale of 9/11 has receded. but
the probability of more frequent
though less devastating attacks has
increased.
Who’s in charge?
As if on cue, al Qaeda has just
released a 45-minute lecture by
its leader Ayman al-Zawahiri that
illustrates just how much has
changed. Fourteen years ago,
al Qaeda was the undisputed
heavyweight among jihadist groups,
even more so after the 9/11 attacks.
Today al-Zawahiri, who succeeded
Osama bin Laden in 2011, is
struggling to fend off the new
pretender, the Islamic State in Iraq
and Syria (ISIS).
In his latest message, he launches
a broadside against ISIS and its
leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. ‘We
do not acknowledge this Caliphate,
and we do not see it as Caliphate
on the prophetic method; instead, it
is an emirate of taking over without
consultation,’ complains al-Zawahiri.
Al Qaeda has always seen its
campaign as a generations-long
struggle toward the glorious day
when a Caliphate could be declared
-- based on Islamic prophecies.
Then -- in 2010 and 2011 -- alBaghdadi rebuilt ISIS from the
to the past on 9/11 anniversary
In 2001, this was the definitive image of terrorism. It’s a much more
muddled picture in 2015.
ashes of al Qaeda in Iraq, extended
its field of operations to Syria (2012),
and declared himself the Caliph of
all Muslims (2014.)
And so battle is joined between
two heavyweights of the jihadist
movement in a way unimaginable
14 years ago. Both have their MVPs.
Al Qaeda has the brilliant bomb-

Islamic Maghreb briefly held some
towns in Mali.
But these groups never had the
trappings of a ‘state’ in the way
ISIS has Sharia courts, basic social
services and now even a currency.

maker in Yemen, Ibrahim al Asiri,
and a commander in Afghanistan
called Farouq al Qahtani who is
regarded as smart and charismatic.
ISIS has a whole raft of potential
contenders should the unthinkable
happen to al Baghdadi.
Controlling territory
Similarly unimaginable 14 years ago
is that a jihadist group -- a ‘nonstate
actor’ as the academics say -- could
control a huge amount of territory. Al
Qaeda was the guest of the Taliban
in Afghanistan, and after 9/11 was
dispersed to mountain camps in
Pakistan. Al-Shabaab, for a while,
controlled parts of central and
planning.
Nick Rasmussen, the director of
the US National Counterterrorism
Center, says ‘access to resources,
both personnel and monetary
resources; control of territory, which
allows for the creation of a safe
haven -- those are the ingredients
that we traditionally look at as being
critical to the development of an
external operations capability.’
Interviewed in the Combating
Terrorism Center’s latest edition
of the Sentinel, Rasmussen says
there is a ‘watching brief’ on whether
ISIS is planning to open a new front
in Europe and the United States.
Last dog standing
A positive twist
to 9/11
CHANDIGARH:
Marking the importance of 11
September in the world’s history,
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi
highlighted the twin terror attack on
the United States in 2001 and the
speech of Swami Vivekananda in
Chicago and said that if the world
would have followed his speech
the incident of 2001 would not have
happened.
‘Today is 9/11, a day when so
many people lost their lives. But
there is another relevance to this
day in history, Swami Vivekananda
speech in Chicago,’ Modi said while
addressing the students at the 34th
Convocation ceremony of PGIMER
in Chandigarh.
‘If world had seriously followed
Swami Vivekananda’s Chicago
speech of 11 September 1893, then
the incident on 11 September 2001,
would not have happened,’ Modi
said remembering the tragedy of the
9/11 twin terror attack on the United
States which left over 3,000 people
dead in the country.
But as the US military presence in
Afghanistan winds down, he says
that the NCTC is also trying to assess
‘what level of risk we may face over
time that al Qaeda may regenerate,
find renewed safe haven, or be able
to restore lost capability.’
Geographical metastasis
On 9/11, al Qaeda had its camps
in Afghanistan; there was a
jihadist presence in Algeria and
the Caucasus and some budding
militancy in the Arabian Peninsula.
Now jihadist groups from Indonesia
west to the African shores of the
Atlantic declare their allegiance to
either al Qaeda or ISIS.
Former CIA Acting Director Mike
Morell says that al Qaeda’s ‘great
victory has been the spread of its
ideology across a large geographic
area’ from northern Nigeria across
Africa and into Yemen as well as to
Iraq and Syria.
Writing in the latest edition of the
Combating
Terrorism
Center’s
Sentinel, Morell says that ‘all told,
some 20 countries now have
terrorist groups within their borders
espousing the jihadist ideology.’
And ISIS has created ‘provinces’
beyond Syria and Iraq at warp
speed.
Terrorist diaspora
It’s a challenge heightened by the
sheer numbers of individuals from
Western countries who have slipped
into Iraq and Syria in the past few
years. Mike Morell predicts that
an attack in Europe or the United
States directed by ISIS (as opposed
to inspired) will eventually occur.
It might be small-scale ‘but over
time the Islamic State’s capability
to conduct a more complex attack
will grow.’ That’s not least because
of the estimated 5,000 Westerners
who have gained battle experience
and skills with bombs and weapons
after joining ISIS. Al Qaeda always
attracted a few from the West, such
as the American Adam Gadahn
and a number of British citizens of
Pakistani origin. But not on the scale
of ISIS, which may have attracted as
many as 25,000 foreign nationals to
Iraq and Syria.

Rain keeps Serena’s

Pennetta thinks Vinci has a chance against World No.1
New York, Sept 11:
Two triumphs from completing a
calendar Grand Slam, top-ranked
defending champion Serena Williams

Open by an opponent even she cannot defeat -- rain.
US Tennis Association officials postponed the two scheduled women’s
semi-final matches to Friday due to
forecasts of rain Thursday lasting

Men’s semi-finals on Friday were

The delays come in the final

A supporting superstructure is in
place around the venue now but there
was not enough time to secure the

Another day of tension only heightened the anticipation and drama

Shami back in

New Delhi, Sept 11 (PTI):
Pacer Mohammad Shami recuperating from shoulder surgery
and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha,
back with a remodelled action, were
among the 30 players called by the
BCCI’s senior selection committee
for a preparatory camp ahead of the
South African team’s forthcoming
tour of India.
Shami has been out of reckoning
after the ICC Cricket World Cup owing
to a knee surgery and missed India’s
away series against Sri Lanka and
Bangladesh besides cash-rich IPL.
Left-arm spinner Ojha will look
to stake claim with his remodelled
action was cleared by ICC as he
showed some form while playing
for India A against Australia A. He
is currently touring Sri Lanka with
the Bengal team.

Grand-slam chasing Serena Williams, winner of the last three WTA

Five more places are still available.
Meanwhile, French Open champion Stan Wawrinka has become the
fourth player to qualify for the seasonending ATP World Tour Finals in London. The world No 5 joins top ranked
Novak Djokovic, fellow Swiss Roger
Federer and Britain’s Andy Murray in
the elite eight-man field for the 15-22
November tournament.
Federer not
surprised with
his success
New York, Sept 11 (AFP):
Many may be surprised by Roger
Federer’s untroubled progress towards becoming the oldest US Open
champion in almost half a century,
but not Federer himself.
The 34-year-old has glided into the
semi-finals, where he will face Swiss
compatriot Stan Wawrinka today.
It will be his 10th New York semifinal as the five-time champion
targets a record sixth US Open
and 18th Grand Slam title.
‘For many years I have tried to
look at the big picture to hopefully
still be playing at a high level at
this age,’ said Federer, who would
be the oldest winner of the US
Open since Ken Rosewall in 1970.
‘So in some ways I am not surprised I am playing as well as I am.’
Federer has not won a major
since his seventh Wimbledon title
in 2012, but came into the US
Open on the back of a seventh
Cincinnati title, defeating world
number one Novak Djokovic in
the final.
Proteas punt on 3
spinners for India
Johannesburg, Sept 11:
Dane Piedt is one of three specialist
spinners named in the South Africa
Test squad for their forthcoming series in India.
Piedt is recalled to the team and
joins Imran Tahir and Simon Harmer,
while wicketkeeper Dane Vilas has
been retained after making his debut
against Bangladesh in July.
Quinton de Kock was named in South
Africa’s one-day and T20 squads but
dropped from the Test team.
Piedt’s only previous Test match
came against Zimbabwe in Harare
in August of last year.
The Proteas, currently the top-
Dane Piedt
ranked Test side in world cricket, will
play four Tests, five ODIs and three
T20s.
Faf du Plessis has recovered from
injury to be included in all three
squads while batsman Khaya Zondo
could make his international debut
after being selected for the T20s.
South Africa convenor of selectors
Linda Zondi said: ‘It is good to have
Dane back from his injury and Imran
was our No 1 spinner for our last Test
series on the sub-continent against
Sri Lanka.’
Zondi also confirmed that another
Dane - wicketkeeper Vilas - would
retain the gloves in this format having
taken over from de Kock in Bangladesh in July.
He added: ‘It is very important
that we maintain consistency in our
selections and Dane hardly had the
chance to make his mark in Bangladesh where the series was so badly
disrupted by the weather.’
NY police boss says ‘sorry’ to Blake
New York, Sept 11:
The New York City police commissioner and mayor offered apologies to
tennis star James Blake Thursday as
officials scrambled to deal with fallout
from his mistaken arrest outside a
Manhattan hotel.
The officer who forcefully arrested
Blake was also put on desk duty as
the episode became a headache for
the department at a time when the city
is hosting the US Open, one of tennis’
premier events and where Blake has
been a fan favourite.
‘I spoke to Blake a short time ago
and personally apologized for yesterday’s incident,’ Police Commissioner
William Bratton said in a statement
Thursday evening. Blake said he
would like to meet with the Mayor and
me at a future date, which we would
be agreeable to.’
Mayor Bill de Blasio, speaking on
cable’s NY1, also publicly apologised
James Blake
saying of his arrest, ‘this shouldn’t
have happened and he shouldn’t
have been treated this way.’
Earlier Thursday, the 35-year-old
Blake said he was never told why
he was forced to the ground and
handcuffed.
‘I’d like an explanation for how they
conducted themselves because I
think we all need to be held accountable for our actions, and police as
well,’ Blake said on ABC’s ‘Good
Morning America.’
The mishap unfolded Wednesday
outside the Grand Hyatt New York
hotel, where detectives were investigating a credit card fraud ring
that was having retail items brought
there by a delivery service, police
said. A retailer had given police a
photo of a man who was involved,
police said.
‘If you look at that photo, it is
a remarkable likeness of James
Blake,’ Chief of Detectives Robert
Boyce said at a hastily called news
conference. ‘They look like twins.’
The confusion intensified when a
cooperating witness misidentifi ed
Blake as a suspect while Blake was
standing outside the hotel waiting to
head to the US Open. Blake said he
looked up from his cellphone and
saw a plainclothes officer charging
him before he was body-slammed.
‘I was standing there doing nothing
- not running, not resisting, in fact,
smiling,’ Blake said.
Blake told officers to check his
identification, and he was released.
He said the officer never identified
himself.
The NYPD took the arresting officer off the street while it conducts
an internal investigation. After seeing a security video of the officer
grabbing Blake, forcing him to the
sidewalk and rear-handcuffing him,
the commissioner said, ‘I have concerns about the takedown.’
Part of the internal inquiry will focus on why the chain of command
wasn’t notified of the mistake.
‘Blake has made a number of comments to the press - that’s how we
first became aware of the matter,’
Bratton said.
Steffi Graf in 1988 and trying to
match Graf’s Open Era career record
of 22 Slam singles titles, two shy of
Margaret Court’s all-time record.
‘I never really thought I would be in
this position where I would even be
talking about records, talking about
passing Steffi Graf or even mentioning Margaret Court,’ she said.
‘I just grew up trying to be the best
that I could and do the best that I
could. I worked really hard for everything, so to even be mentioned in that
conversation is great.’
Three-time defending champion
Serena, who seeks an Open Erarecord seventh US Open title, has
won all four career meetings against
Vinci without dropping a set.
She also is 7-0 against Pennetta
and 6-1 against Halep in their career
rivalries.
Only five players have completed
the calendar-year sweep of the Australian, US and French Opens and
Wimbledon -- Americans Don Budge
in 1938 and Maureen Connolly in
1953, Australians Rod Laver in 1962
and 1969 and Margaret Court in 1970
and Germany’s Graf in 1988.

PM stresses on holistic,

q Addresses students at 34th convocation of PGIMER
The meaty
STORY
q After Mumbai, Rajasthan,
ban in Ahmedabad
NT Bureau
After Mumbai and Rajasthan, sale of meat has now been banned in Ahmedabad during the Jain festival period of ‘Paryushan’.
After the banning of beef in March which drew protests from largely Muslims
and Dalits, Maharastra government initiated meet ban on account of a Jain
festival. The issue has come to spotlight as the other States like Jammu and
Kashmir and Gujarat have been influenced by the move. Let us look at the
recent developments
How did it start?
The decision to ban the consumption of meat for eight days was taken
by the BJP-led Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) during
Paryushan when the Jain community practices temporal monasticism.
The community believes that violence against all living beings should be
curtailed during these days. As a mark of respect, abattoirs remain closed
across most of Maharashtra’s major cities for a couple of days.
Court steps in
Seeking response of the State and the
civic body on a plea of Bombay Mutton
Dealers Association, a Division Bench
of the High Court said imposing a ban
on animal slaughter and sale of meat for
four days is not feasible in a metropolitan
city like Mumbai. ‘Ban is on slaughter
and sale of the meat. What about other
sources? What about packaged meat
that is already available in the market?’
the bench asked. Ending on a slightly
positive note, the court, suggested if
the Jain community had a problem with
animals being slaughtered in the open and displayed in shops, a direction
can be issued against that.
Stirring a
controversy
Shiv Sena and Maharashtra
Navnirman Sena (MNS) had set up
stall to sell meat in defiance of the
order in busy Dadar area.
The Raj Thackeray-led MNS set
up a stall to sell chicken meat as a
symbolic protest. Shiv Sena workers
also tore off the civic body notices
declaring the ban on meat for four
days in Mumbai on 10, 13, 17 and 18
September, when members of Jain
community observe religious fast.

should address wellness and wellbeing and not only illness,’ he said.
Modi was addressing students at the

Actor’s son death:
Was it a suicide?

The son of yesteryear actor Oru Viral Krishna Rao was found
dead at his residence in Pazhavanthangal.
According to police sources, Sivaji Rao (48) lived alone on
the ground floor of a rented house in Avvaiyar Street.
Police said, on 9 September, the owner went into the house
to check on the foul smell emanating from there, and found the
door unlocked and Rao dead. The body was in a decomposed
condition, with police suspecting if it was a case of suicide or
if he had died of a heart attack. Rao has been trying to get a
break in the film industry for years and has been distressed
over the failure of the same. Police said, he would leave the
house to eat lunch in nearby eateries and return home. This
was his usual routine and that he rarely interacted with people.
His brother Rajendra Rao, a photographer, who lived in
Sivagangai with his family, told police that Sivaji Rao had a
complication in his heart.

Strawberry
The movie speaks
about the safety of
students in schools.
However, it is

Vijay has taken the
help of ghost stories
to convey a strong
message
V
eteran lyricist Pa Vijay, after
a couple of outings as hero,
comes up with an all-round
show in Strawberry. It is an eerie
thriller based on a real life incident.
Written, directed, produced and enacted by Vijay himself, it has enough
elements to keep one glued to their
seats.
Released by Sri Thenandal Films,
the movie speaks about the safety
of students in schools. However, it
is nowhere preachy. Vijay has taken
the help of ghost stories to convey a
strong message.
Vijay is a call taxi driver, who leads
a happy life with his friend ‘Robo’
Shankar. One day, his services are
hired by a rich girl Avni Modi for a
month. She is a human soul painter.
She briefs Vijay about ghosts, spirits and how they take a medium to
achieve their unfulfilled desires.
Her father Joe Malluri is a tantrik.
Malluri explains to him that the spirit
of a young girl, who died recently
wants to meet him. A flashback reveals that a six-year-old girl Anjali
falls from a hole in a school bus and
dies on the spot and Vijay’s efforts
to rescue her fails. The school authorities threaten the girl’s parents
(Samuthirakani and Devayani) to
withdraw the case.
Then, the spirit takes the help of
Vijay to take revenge on the school
authorities for their negligence. How,
she does it forms the rest. With
enough computer graphic scenes, the
flick does manage to leave a mark.
Cinematographer Mara Varman and
music composer Taj Noor come up
with good work.
Vijay plays his part well, while Avni
Modi is passable. Samuthirakani
and Devayani are good and Thambi
Ramiah’s cameo deserves special
mention. Strawberry has loose ends in
the first half, but the latter part makes
it a racy affair.

Alia cried
