Activating the software
After you have entered your serial number and full name, you'll be asked to
activate the software:
17
TropeTrainer(tm) software Installation and User's Guide
TropeTrainer software is delivered in one of two ways: 1. with just a serial number or
2. with a serial number, your registered name and an activation code.
If you got your copy from a store or a synagogue, you most likely only have a
serial number. If you got your copy directly from Kinnor Software, you most
likely will have a sticker or email showing your full name, serial number and an
activation code.
If you received the software on CD, your serial number can be found on the first
panel of the Quickstart Guide. If you purchased this software by download, you
will receive an email with download information, plus your serial number,
registration name and activation code.
If you do not have an activation code:
18
TropeTrainer(tm) software Installation and User's Guide
Leave the Activation code field empty. Use the bottom half of the activation form
to send an email to Kinnor Software, asking for an activation code.
To send the activation code request email, enter your email address in the Email
field near the middle of the Activation form. Click Email for activation code.
Your email software should open with a pre-addressed email, that should contain
your name and serial number.
If your email software does not open, or if the wrong email software opens,
create an email addressed to [email protected]. Set its title to "Activation
request". Include in the message the full name of the person you want to register
the software to, and your TropeTrainer software's serial number. After your have
sent the email asking for an activation code, click the button, Continue without
activation.
Please allow 72 hours (more if you sent your email just before Jewish or U.S.
Post Office holidays) for us to generate and reply with your activation
information. Please do not send us several emails for activation unless you
have not heard from us in 72 hours or so. Activation codes are generated by
our staff, who do not work on Shabbat, Jewish and U.S. Post Office holidays,
or the middle of the night.
TropeTrainer software will run for two weeks without activation. When you
receive your activation code, enter it in the Activation code field and click
Continue.
If you do have an activation code:
Enter your full name, serial number and activation code exactly as it appears on
the sticker or download email. Do not add or remove periods or initials that
appear with the activation information. Enter your name and the codes exactly as
they appear in the activation information. For example, if your name is shown as
Eli Schwartz, do not enter eli schwartz or Eli I. Schwartz.
If you entered everything correctly, the Continue (to active) button is enabled.
Click the Continue button. You should get confirmation that the software is
activated.
Save the activation information in a safe place -- this is the key to your

First time startup: Lite edition
(If you do not have the Lite edition, you can skip this page.)
TropeTrainer™ software Lite edition has information on its installation CD that
tells the software exactly which Torah or Haftarah verses you are to learn, and
what melody to use. The first time TropeTrainer software Lite edition is started,
it must read this information from the CD onto your hard drive. After the
software has stored this information, you will not need to place the CD into your
computer (except to reinstall the software).
To get the customized information from your CD to your computer's hard drive,
make sure the TropeTrainer software Lite edition installation CD is in your
computer's CD drive the first time the software is run.
The Lite edition does not use the normal Open reading window discussed in
other sections of this document. When the software starts, and when you select
from the software's menu Open>Open reading, the Navigator window opens,
showing your readings:

time, and stores that selection for future times that you open the software.
The first time the software starts, and after asking for your serial number, full
name, and optionally your activation information, the software will ask which
reading you select for your single parsha:
Click the radio button to the right of the Single reading you want to select. If
23

only specific verses you select are displayed.
Open Reading tips
The Hebrew calendar has 19 variations featuring occasional extra days in several
of the Hebrew months and an extra leap-month every several years. The regular
weekly readings plus special holiday readings are placed throughout the year so
that they occur at the correct time of each year. Special readings are read before
30
TropeTrainer(tm) software Installation and User's Guide
major holidays. Because of this complexity, it is critical that you select the
correct year at the top left of the Open reading window.
It is also important to click the Israel or Diaspora (not in Israel) radio button at
the top of the window, because in most years there are differences in readings in
Israel because they celebrate only one day of most major holidays, while outside
of Israel most communities celebrate two days. When the second day occurs on
Shabbat, it pushes the regular Shabbat reading off one week for communities
outside of Israel. Since Reform synagogues generally follow the Israeli custom of
celebrating one day of these holidays, you might check with your synagogue to
see if it is correct for you to use the Israel setting.
Remember that the Hebrew year starts in Autumn with Rosh Hashanah. On most
years, the first reading of the year is Ha'azinu, which is read on the Shabbat
between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In some years, Vayeilech is read on
the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In the Open reading
31
TropeTrainer(tm) software Installation and User's Guide
window shown above, the year 5770 is selected. This corresponds to the secular
calendar years with Rosh Hashanah in Autumn 2009, and the Hebrew year
ending the Autumn of 2010. Vayeilech is greyed out, indicating that it is not read
right after Rosh Hashanah that year.
The last selectable item in the second column, Vayakhel+P'kudei is shown
selected. The date corresponding to this reading is shown at the top-right as
March 13, 2010. Always check that date when you select a reading to make sure
you are in the correct year.
Since there is a variable number of weeks in the Hebrew calendar, some years
certain readings are combined. In the year shown here, 5770, the readings
Vayakhel and P'kudei are read on the same Shabbat morning. That is why the
Vayakhel reading and the P'kudei reading at the end of the second column are
greyed out, while the combined reading is selectable.
In addition, March 13, 2010 is the last Shabbat in the Hebrew month of Adar.
(The date for this varies from year to year.) It is customary to read a special
haftarah on that Shabbat. That is there are several items in the Haftarah Options
list. In this case, most Ashkenazi synagogues read one special haftarah, some
Sephardi synagogues read a different one, and some other Sephardi synagogues
plus Chabad chasidim read yet a third selection of verses. When in doubt, check
with your rabbi, cantor, bar mitzvah teacher or a synagogue official who would
know the custom in your synagogue.
Hint: You can always click the Calendar button to bring up a Hebrew calendar;
click to the correct year and date, and click Open reading. You'll then be brought
back to the Open reading window with the correct date and reading selected.
Note: Some Conservative synagogues read only a third of a Torah portion each
year. If you are chanting in a Conservative synagogue, check with your rabbi,
cantor, b'nai mitzvah teacher or other person in the synagogue to learn whether
you are on an annual or triennial cycle, and if triennial, which year (1, 2 or 3)
you will be reading from for a particular Shabbat.

Some trope teachers use a system of colors to identify groups of words ending in
particular trope symbols. Trope symbols specify the grammar of a verse, just like
commas, semicolons and periods do in English sentences. In addition, they tell
the person chanting what melody to use for each word. To turn on and off trope
color highlights, click the Groups button .
46
TropeTrainer(tm) software Installation and User's Guide
Trope symbols have several levels of force, indicating the strength of breaks
between parts of a verse, just like a comma is weaker than a period or a
semicolon. To display tropes in colors that distinguish green - connector tropes,
orange - weak separator tropes and red - strong separator tropes, click the Tropes
button .
Some phrases and verses are chanted with special melodies. TropeTrainer
software can highlight those words by underlining them. To turn underlining on
and off, click the Underline button .

A block of controls at the top-right of the main window's toolbar provide control
over the voice used by the software to speak or chant verses:
48
TropeTrainer(tm) software Installation and User's Guide
To adjust the accent of the voice, click down-arrow of the Accent control to
display its popup list:
The list of accents may be slightly different from what you see shown above, as
we add and improve features of the software. The accents do not specify melody,
just the accent. The software can be set to sing with a Moroccan melody, but
Ashkenazi accent. Sephardi pronunciation has become the norm in U.S.
Conservative and Reform synagogues.
Ashkenazi Traditional: Simchas Toyra, Shabbos, Yaakoyv, Boruch
Ashkenazi Modern: Simchas Tora, Shabbos, Yaakov, Boruch
Sephardi: Simchat Tora, Shabbat, Yaakov, Baruch
Sephardi Traditional: Simchat Tora, Shabbat, Ya'akov (ayins are pronounced,
chet and chaf are pronounced differently), Baruch
U.S. Sephardi: Simchat Tora, Shabbat, Yaakov (like Sephardi, but with a U.S.
accent for cholam [O])
Galician: Simchas Toyru, Shabboos, Yaakoyv, Booreech
Each person has a vocal range of pitches they are able to sing. It is critically
important that TropeTrainer software is set so that the student can sing the entire
range of notes in a reading -- that the notes don't go too high or too low.
TropeTrainer software offers two controls to adjust this: Voice and Pitch. Voice
sets the basic range:
Bass: Very low
Baritone: Normal adult male voice; also easiest for most kids to follow
Tenor: Higher-pitched adult male voice
Alto: Lower-pitched adult female voice
Soprano: Higher-pitched adult female voice
Child: Child's normal pitch range. (Although we include this voice, Kinnor
Software recommends kids use the Baritone voice)
The Pitch control allows the user to adjust the musical notes up and down a halfpitch at a time to fine tune the pitch range of the chanting.

The Melody control allows the user to set the melody for chanting the various
readings. Each type of reading has a different set of melody options, and Kinnor
Software keeps adding new melody options over time. When the software is first
started and no reading is displayed, the Melody control's popup list is empty.
When the user selects a reading, the Melody control's popup list is filled with the
names of the melodies available for that reading type. Click the Melody Help
button ? to the right of the Melody control to see a description of the melodies
available for the currently displayed reading type. Consult your trope teacher,
cantor or rabbi for guidance regarding which melody to learn.

On-screen options
The modern printing standard for vowels is to put them under the stem (the
downward stroke) of letters. The letters dalet and resh have stems that are at the
far-right of the letter. Some people find it easier to read the Hebrew when the
vowel is centered under the letter. The option Put vowels under stems of Dalet
and Resh selects between:
when checked (notice the qamats is directly under the stem
of the resh), and:
when not checked (notice the qamats is under the middle of
55
TropeTrainer(tm) software Installation and User's Guide
the resh).
The font size selections allow you to adjust the size of fonts for displaying
haftarah texts. Torah texts are pre-wrapped to match the exact words on each
line of many modern Torahs. To accomodate this, TropeTrainer software
automatically adjusts the size of Torah and some Megillah texts to fit the width
of the panel, so for those texts the font size settings do nothing.
To add extra spaces between words in the music display, change its setting on
the right top of the Preferences window.
To display the text under the music score's notes using Hebrew letters, check or
