Test the Cayenne and the very notion
of what a hybrid can be.
Your first thought behind the wheel of the new Cayenne S Hybrid may very well be a
question: “How on Earth can this be a hybrid?” The answer is hybrid technology, the
Porsche way. Honed on the track by revolutionary race cars like the 911 GT3 R Hybrid,
yet translated to the road. The Cayenne S Hybrid is the epitome of the Porsche Intelligent
Performance philosophy “more from less.” Come in for a test drive and find all the
answers on the road. Just like we did. Porsche. There is no substitute.
Experience the new Cayenne S Hybrid.

hat a wonderful start to our driving “season”!! We’ve had a
Progressive Drive, a Rally, the Wine Tour, and a driving skills
event at the Deer Park Airport.
Coming up so very soon is the Festival of Speed (first weekend in
June!!!) and Parade as well as our highly anticipated Zone 6 Tour. We
also have our traditional visits to Thompson Pass, Chee Chee’s awesome
lunch at her Lake Coeur d’Alene pad, and Priest Lake and Schweitzer to
look forward to this summer. There is more Driver’s Ed to be had too!
Remember, when you are out enjoying these events and you get inspired,
please write about your experiences and send them to me. We all love
reliving these moments. I am also always wanting your personal stories
about your cars. Keep those coming!

Members of INWRPCA,
Thank you for your thoughtful gift to the Tri-Cities Cancer Center

our unfortunate time.
I will always remember their kindness and INWRPCA’s. Bruce

From the President
T
he annual Porsche Parade is
a truly special event. It’s a
time for re-connecting with
the spirit of the Porsche Club of
America; to share the passion you
have for the car and the marque
with friends old and new while
enjoying some really great places.
We were so very lucky having it here on the West
Coast only last year in Monterey, California and with
such a special location, the INWR had a great turnout.
We also had the very first Zone 6 reception, hosted
by our Zone rep Tim Hagner and the opportunity
to connect with our friends in some of the other 16
regions that make up our Zone 6.! !
This year’s Parade is quite some distance away, and
that is a prime consideration, as is the cost of having to
travel back to Indiana. We DO have several members
who have a long streak of consecutive Parade
attendances, but for by far the majority of us this
year’s Parade was not on our summer schedule. Too
bad we can’t find that same Porsche experience we
had last year….! !
Well, there’s an answer and like many things, it’s
found right here in our own “backyard”so to speak
in early August. We call it the Zone 6 Grand Tour (or
Z6 GT if you like) of all 16 regions that make up the
June - July 2015
largest geographical Zone in all of PCA. Bill Bauer, of
the Pacific Northwest Region, is the Tour Director and
he has been working with Sean and Megan Sweeney
as well as myself on the route and other details. We’ll
have the Tour coming through Spokane, arriving on
August 4th from the Big Sky Region and departing
the next day heading south to meet up with the Silver
Sage Region south of Lewiston!! Think of it as our
own Zone 6 “Parade” of Porsches driving through the
Zone for 14 days, starting in Seattle and finishing in
Wilsonville, Oregon. Participants can jump on or off
of the route segments as they please based on the time
they have available to join the group. With our own
Parade coming up in 2017, I really would like us to
step up as a region and make this something special
for our guests with a big turnout of our members in
support of the Tour. At the very least, to have 20 or so
members come drive the 2 days within our region and
show why Spokane was selected for Parade in 2017.! !
More information on the Z6 GT will posted to the
INWR website as well as the Zone 6 site at
www.zone6-pca.org in the coming weeks. I hope to see
many of you “on the road” in August!!!
Your Prez, Ron

T
he snow flakes have stopped
flying, mostly, the plants are
blooming and Porsches are
starting across the zone.
It’s not just the Porsches starting,
it’s the volunteers starting! Our
club would not be the great club it is
without the tireless work of our volunteers. Our club
Officers who help to stay the course, at the Regional
and National level, making sure all those things we
enjoy and take for granted are there.
Communication is paramount in successfully
running our club and without the mighty effort of our
newsletter editors and/or webmasters we would not be
the club we are today.
Take some time to look at all the events being put on
in our zone in the next month and take a moment to
think about all the effort, planning, and coordination
required to make it happen. That’s volunteers at work!
Without them where would our club be? That’s a
scary thought. The next club event you attend, thank
the volunteer(s) who make it happen. Hopefully it’s
you taking the well deserved “Thank you” from your
fellow club members.
To all the volunteers that make it happen for us here in
Zone 6 “Thank You!!!!”
The Zone 6 Grand Tour is coming to the Zone 6
Region you’re a member of, will you be part of the
adventure? I can’t wait to do this! This is a huge
undertaking (volunteers at work!) that will start July
25 in the Pacific Northwest Region and end 2 weeks
later, August 8, in the Oregon Region. We will drive
in ALL 16 Regions. If you can’t do the whole tour, we
understand, and are planning it so members can pop
in and out as schedule and time permits. Lots more to
come as we put finishing touches and details together.
I hope to see each and every one of you on the road!
I’ll see you in the zone!

For some of my wry automotive opinions I’ve been
accused of having a little Peter Egan in my blood.
But, alas, Road & Track gave me the snub, so your

few words in our beloved Über in an attempt to pique

rather tastefully enhance their “yesterday’s model”

connection to their Porsche –or other Bavarian

is some cost at which they would part with their twin,
they never seem to reach that “cost” no matter the
cost. These are the AUTOMOTIVE CARETAKERS,
those for whom time, money, exasperation, wrenchthrowing, and giddy application of their favorite wax

ast Saturday was the first official club drive of
the year! And while it was a bit chilly, at least
the weather was nice. :)
Of course, there was the drive! Lining up to leave we
realized there were quite a few of us.
Of course, we started at the dealership. It was nice to
see the R8 and 991 Turbo S again, eye candy for sure.
It was a guided by a route drive that was left to just
us to follow, at times finding another to drive with. It
was a nice drive that ended at a local country club for
lunch.
And then there was her…. *Sigh* A dream come
true for me to finally meet one. A real 993 911 GT2.
The widow maker. I spent some time standing in her
presence contemplating her… It was sublime.

Which was, of course, nice. It was definitely a fun
time.
And while we didn’t win the door prize we really
wanted…. We ironically came away with a poster,
which was one thing I said I didn’t want since we are
running out of room on the garage walls!
And then we were given this door prize book. It
was won by a Boxster owner, and apparently when
he asked who he could give it to someone kindly
suggested us. My husband was quite happy, he’s
always wanted it!
All in all, it was a very lovely day. I’m looking
forward to a great season of drives. :)

he day couldn’t have been better for the 2015
INWR Rally. Beautiful sunny weather, a good
turnout - 12 cars and 24 people – and a good
mix of long time members and new(er) members.
Our day started at the Pasco Red Lion where Steve
Dunnivant, our rally master, handed out the route
instructions he had put together for the rally. After
a few verbal instructions, the cars lined up and were
sent out one minute apart. Once we started, it was up
to the navigators to read the directions, look for traffic
signs, and relay information to the driver. Sounds
fairly basic, but as we all learned it wasn’t quite so
simple.
Instructions must be read and interpreted correctly by
the navigator, the driver has to listen to their navigator
and have faith they are correct, and the driver has to
watch their speed and time plus look for road signs.
It truly is a team effort. But, as each of us can attest,
this can all lead to some disagreements and maybe a
few sharp words like “you didn’t like how I did that
U-turn?” or “keep your sunglasses on your face and
First Place: Debbie and George Mellinger
June - July 2015
they wouldn’t fall off your lap when I make a hard
turn”. But, at the end, we all had smiles on our faces
and excitedly shared the experiences we had along the
route.
We continued our enthusiastic conversations as we
enjoyed lunch at the Whoopemup Hollow Café in
Waitsburg. After lunch, Steve presented the awards;
1st place went to George and Debbie Mellinger,
newer INWR members and the first time they had
participated in an event. Second place was awarded to
Ron and Jeanne Casavant.
Thanks to all who participated and especially to Steve
Dunnivant and his wife Deb. Steve put the rally route
together and he and Deb test drove the route to ensure
there was no road construction or dirt roads. They
also made the lunch arrangements at the cafe and
made sure there was enough room for all.
This was a very fun event enjoyed by all participants.
Look for a rally on the INWR calendar next year and
come have fun with us.

What is All European Sports Sunday?
All European Sports Sunday is an all-European Car Show benefiting a
children’s charity, Children’s Village, held on Sunday, July 26th, 2015, from
9:00 AM to noon, in Coeur d’Alene’s McEuen Park. All European Sports
Sunday falls on Day #3 of the Cavallinos in Coeur d’Alene Weekend, which
features European exotic and supercars displayed on the lawns of Coeur
d’Alene’s City Park during Day #2, Saturday, July 25th.
Where can I find more information about Cavallinos in Coeur d’Alene
Weekend, and All European Sports Sunday in particular?

Who is invited to enter their automobile in the All European Sports Sunday
show?
1. European cars associated with Northwest- and Inland Northwest-based car
clubs, such as BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz clubs, Italian car clubs, British
car clubs, and others. If it’s European, it’s welcome!
2. European cars not associated with a car club, but whose owners would like
to show their cars.
3. Spokane- and Coeur d’Alene-area European car dealerships associated
with local European car clubs, or who sell European car marques.

How do European car owners AFFILIATED with a local clubs register for All
European Sports Sunday?
Membership in your local car club constitutes “registration.” You should
contact your local club president and ensure you are included in their car
contingent scheduled to attend All European Sports Sunday.
How do European car owners NOT AFFILIATED with a local European Car
Club register for All European Sports Sunday?
Please go to our website, www.cavallinosincoeurdalene.com, go to the
REGISTRATION tab, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the button
associated with All European Sports Sunday and your automobile’s category.
We ask that you provide some basic information about your automobile and
also your contact information. We will respond to you with instructions
for attending the event, as well as provide the contact information for the
president of the car club most closely matching your automobile. We
will also forward your contact information to the proper club president or
organizer.
Is there a cost to participate in, or attend, All European Sports Sunday?
All European Sports Sunday is a FREE event. However, we ask that each car
on the display field make a small donation of $20.00 to our charity, Children’s
Village. Automotive dealerships represented on the field will make a larger
donation. Guests simply attending the event, who feel inclined to support us
in our effort to benefit Children’s Village, may also donate, either by prior
arrangement with the event coordinator, or by spontaneous donation during
the event by placing their donation into our one of our donation buckets.
Beside their donation to Children’s Village, what items should drivers bring
with them to All European Sports Sunday?

Drivers should bring whatever detailing supplies they wish to use to do final
preparation for their automobile. Folding chairs, water, and sunscreen are also
permissible and advised. Individual pop-up shades are not permitted on the display
field; shade is readily available at the Gazebo or in dealer/vendor areas. Food,
water, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the event.
When and where should drivers assemble who wish to display their automobiles in
All European Sports Sunday?
Driver’s should arrive before 7:30 AM in the parking lot on the southeast side of
McEuen Park, 420 E. Front Street, where drivers will congregate with owners of
their same car marque and coordinate their entry onto the McEuen Park lawn. At
approximately 8:00 AM an Event Marshal, assigned to your group, will lead you
onto the field and assist you in safely parking your automobile. Once you are
parked you may do any final preparation to improve your automobile’s appearance.
The show begins at 9:00 AM.
Toward the conclusion of All European Sports Sunday what happens?
After a substantial donation is made to Children’s Village, and all People’s Choice
Awards are presented to their respective drivers, a six-mile Car Club Parade begins,
removing the automobiles from the field in an orderly fashion. The Parade ends in
the Riverstone restaurant district, allowing car clubs to lunch together, depart on a
club drive, or simply depart the area via I-90.
Is there a Timeline of Events composing All European Sports Sunday?
(Timeline is subject to change)
7:30 AM - Automobiles preparing for entry onto the field for All European Sports

Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln. You can walk around the National
Memorial alone or on guided tours. You’ll see impressive views of the sculpture that have national
and international recognition and reputation and you can take spectacular pictures.
Crazy Horse Memorial is an internationally-known mountain carving that will be 641 foot long and
563 feet high when finished. You’ll visit a representation of Crazy Horse, a strategic tribal leader in
the Battle of the Little Big Horn. You can spend time in a beautiful museum of artwork.
This area has internationally popular tourist geography and you have an amazing range of touring
and driving opportunities. You can enjoy significant geography changes from the Badlands in the
east to the Black Hills and Rapid City in the center to the natural Devil’s Tower in the west.
Here are a few of many things you can choose from when you come to Escape 2015:
 Great tourist attractions, tours, drives and group activities in a limitless variety of geographies with
scenic touring and enthusiastic driving in ever-changing geography and on some very hilly, twisty
roads
 Eight or more organized drives and activities to select from each of the 3 days
 An informal car show competing in a beautiful park where participants select winners

PedrosGarage:
Full of Holes!
Article written and graphics supplied by
Pedro P. Bonilla, GCR PCA
Reprinted with permission
B
ig cross-drilled brake rotors which fill the inside space of the wheels look sexy and racy but, are they the
best option?
Let’s take a look back to the first
cross-drilled rotors and why they
were left full of holes.
Back in the 60s, when the first
disc brakes started appearing on
production vehicles and therefore
on race cars, it was quickly
discovered that when the brakes
were applied forcefully (as in a
racecar) the brake pad material
would sublime (go directly from
solid to gas).
This would create a cushion of gas
between the rotor and the pad that
gave a brief loss-of-brakes before
the pads again grabbed.
Engineers soon realized that if they
cross-drilled the rotors and even
better, if they vented the rotors and
then cross-drilled them the gasses
would immediately have a route
to escape and the brakes would
feel strong and progressive from
the onset, hence the use of crossdrilling on racecars began.
June - July 2015
Über Alles
30
PedrosGarage
Since in those days it was “Win on Sunday & Sell on Monday” these cross-drilled rotors began to appear on
sports and high performance cars as well. Very soon it became the norm that a sports car should have crossdrilled disc brakes and this created the idea that cross-drilled rotors offer increased breaking performance.
Today, with advances in metallurgy (rotors) and materials science (pads) there is no need for cross-drilled rotors
anymore, but we keep seeing them in our Porsches, Lamborghinis and Ferraris. Why? Because car buyers
think they look cool.
You’re thinking: “That can’t be, Pedro has lost his marbles”, but I can assure you that that’s the case.
Take a good look at any serious professional racecar today. I bet you won’t see any cross-drilled rotors and
that’s because they create more problems than they solve.
What all those holes do in a rotor is create stress points and a rotor surface that’s heated and cooled unevenly.
This results in rotors that can easily crack and makes catastrophic brake failure more likely. The worst case
is when cracks between multiple holes connect, which can lead to a large chunk of rotor breaking free. Not a
pretty sight.
June - July 2015
Über Alles
31
PedrosGarage
Technically, a blank rotor will offer the
best braking performance because the
brake pads of today don’t sublime like in
the old days.
But, when running in the rain, the water
on the pad’s or rotor’s surface will turn
to vapor as soon as the two surfaces
meet, having the same effect as the old
sublimation, so what you will see in
most top-notch racecars today are slotted
rotors.
Slotting serves the same purpose as crossdrilling (letting gasses escape) without
weakening the rotor as much.
If you track your car and have crossdrilled rotors, go and look at them closely
and I bet you you’ll find some surface
stress fractures.
And the next time you’re at the track and
a car comes into the paddock from doing
hot laps with cross-drilled rotors, go
and put your ear next to one of the front
wheels and you’ll likely hear metallic
pings, clicks and pops as the rotor’s
surface cools unevenly.
What you ware hearing is in essence
cracks forming!
Cross-drilled rotors may look cool, but
they’re not the best option because ...
... they’re full of holes!
