programs. Critical thinking, problem solving, and
communication skills are a major focus in the standards.
Through innovative items and performance tasks,
Smarter Balanced will measure these important skills
(SmarterBalanced, 2012).
In 2014, we begin using the Smarter Balanced
assessments to measure the Common Core State
Standards. The tests won’t be just multiple choice.
Questions will have a writing component asking students
to explain their answer, solve a problem, or communicate
why the student thinks their answer is the best one—
skills we use and practice in everyday life, and ones
they’ll need to be college and career
ready.
We are focusing on teaching
high levels of inquiry that match what
the Common Core Standards expect us
to teach! We teach Costa’s Three levels
of Inquiry:

Evidence and/or research-based.
The Smarter Balanced assessment system beyond the concepts or principles they have learned and
(the testing consortium of which California is part) will to use these in hypothetical or novel situations (imagine,
measure the full depth and breadth of the Common Core plan, judge, predict, invent, speculate, generalize).
Our goal at Ocean View is to push students to
State Standards in ELA/literacy and mathematics. The
authors of the Common Core explicitly focused on the answer level three type questions. We don’t want
cognitive skills and knowledge that students need to be students just to know things, we want them to be able
ready to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing, to use them well too. Next time, Cornell Notes, Pacing
academic college courses and in workforce training Guides, and Common Formative Assessments!
Common Core State Standards are a new set
of standards we are teaching our kids K-12 right now.
Most all of them align with our previous edition of
California State Standards. Here’s what is different
about the new standards:
The writers of the Common Core State
Standards, who included college and university faculty,
began by defining the knowledge and skills in
mathematics and English-Language Arts/literacy that
students need to be ready to succeed in entry-level
credit-bearing coursework and the high-skill workforce.
To do this, the standards writers consulted existing
college readiness benchmarks, research on
student academic preparation, and surveys
of business leaders, as well as content
standards for top-performing states and
countries. The standards-writers sought to
create standards that are:

Guidance Information
Guidance Information for Spring Semester 2013
Our college counselor, Mrs. Collison conducted 9th grade class visits to guide them in creating their individualized 4 year education
plans. If they have not shared them with you please ask them about it. She will be visiting the Sophomore Social Studies classes in
February to work with them on updating their education plan. The 4 year education plan is designed to serve as a planning guide in
meeting graduation and A-G college entrance requirements.
Pre-registration for the 2013-2014 school year will begin in March. Guidance specialists will visit classrooms to distribute preregistration cards and to assist students in the selection of classes. Parent and teacher signatures are required on the cards. Prior to
registration students and parent should review transcripts. Transcripts are readily available on the parent/student portal. Please
review your child’s choices.
Look for pre-registration cards during the following weeks:
9th grade – March 11th
10th grade – March 18th
11th grade - March 25th
*Students who sign up for Honors, IB or AP courses are agreeing to remain in the course for at least one semester. If the student
decides he or she does not want to enroll in the course and notifies the guidance specialist prior to June 28th the change will be
made. Otherwise the student will remain in the weighted course. You are encouraged to discuss the demands of an IB or AP course
with your student. If you are uncertain about class selections contact the guidance specialist or Mrs. Collsion, ext. 4470.

Visit Japan in 2013
Attention freshmen, sophomores or juniors! The Sister City Association of Huntington Beach is seeking high school
students to serve as Ambassadors of Good Will to Japan. This is a unique opportunity for international travel,
experiencing another culture, and making lifelong friendships. (It looks good on a resume too.) Sponsored by the City
of Huntington Beach, ambassadors have represented our city for the past 30 years in our sister city of Anjo, Japan.
Ambassadors host their student counterpart for two weeks in Huntington Beach in early July and travel to Japan the
first two weeks of August in a reciprocal exchange.

Seahawk Squadron
Congratulations to Ocean View’s
Seahawk Squadron on clinching the
State Championship Title
Again!!
The OVHS Seahawk Squadron qualified again this marching season for the California State Band Championships.
They competed against 8 other division 1A finalists at Heritage High School in Menifee.
Although the Seahawk Squadron faced stiff competition from bands like Bishop Amat – a private school whose
band ranked #1 coming into championship day, they were determined to give it their all and leave nothing on the
field to regret. They spent many hours rehearsing their show,“Babylonia: The Sounds of Time,” which was based
on the movie Prince of Persia. Under the leadership of J.P. Combs (band director), Alumni Bob Briggs (drill
designer), Shauna Tomlinson (guard coach), Lizzy Raymond (dance coach), Ronald Cabiltes (drum coach), JaLynn
Freeze (visual coach), and student leaders Andrew McCandless (drum major), Tanner Johnson (assistant drum
major, Abby Hoeker (guard captain), and Justin DeGeytere (drum captain), they prevailed and marched away
with their third consecutive state championship title!!
Congratulations to our awesome band – The Seahawk Squadron and their coaches!!

PTSO
On behalf of all the OVHS PTSO board members, I would like to extend our best wishes for an
amazing 2013!
The PTSO is most grateful for the support we received for our early fundraisers. Three specific
events, the Community Festival, E-Waste Recycling, and Grad Night Bunco, were tremendously successful
because of great participation from our families and staff. The volunteers organizing these events spend
countless hours of their personal time, and we all benefit from their generous dedication to making a
difference at OV. A big thanks to Tram Banks and the Grad Night Committee!
Can you believe we are approaching our half-way point in the school year? It seems like just yesterday
when I welcomed parents at our Back to School Night, with an invitation to show support by joining the NO
OBLIGATION PTSO. If you haven’t already, please find our membership form on line and sign up TODAY. Your
$10.00 goes a long way to help us achieve our main goal: ENRICH AND CONNECT. With your membership, we
can offer scholarships, help fund PSAT tests, and supplement enrichment and technology in the classrooms.
Stay connected by coming to one of our value-packed PTSO meetings. We handle the “business”
portion fairly quickly so we can get to the important stuff – connecting parents with staff and programs at
OVHS. Mark your calendar for the 3rd Tuesday of each month: Jan 22, Feb 19, Mar 19.
I’d like to share one my many personal 2013 resolutions: “Make memories; not excuses.” Thank you for
your membership and support as we work behind the scenes to make memories at OVHS.
Best wishes,
Sue Welfringer, OVHS PTSO President

Teacher Appreciation
Mrs. Fuschetti, Ocean View science teacher, was nominated for the
Huntington Beach Mason’s Teacher Appreciation Award. A representative from
each school in our district was honored for working with kids above and beyond
their teaching assignment, thus demonstrating volunteerism within the school
community.
At the ceremony, held at the annual Mason’s Teacher Appreciation
Night, Mr. Parker, AP Curriculum, spoke about the leadership that Mrs. Fuschetti
provides in the science department, as well as the hard work and dedication
Mrs. Fuschetti has always demonstrated at OV.
