So, Mrs. ‘umble and I traveled to our
nation’s capitol last month. She had a
conference to attend, and I have two
sisters, two nephews and a niece to
visit. My oldest nephew was inducted
as an Eagle Scout and we attended his
ceremony.
But while Mrs. ‘umble was in her conference sessions, I got to spend some
time in some museums. I managed to
walk all the levels of four museums,
including the Museum of American
History (some areas were closed for
renovation). All in one day. Fortunately,
they are all on the Mall, and fairly close
to one another. Unfortunately, our hotel
was two miles from the mall, the temperature was in the mid to high 30’s,
it was rainy with a 25 mph wind. But what a lot of cool stuff to see in
the American History Museum, known
as “America’s Attic”. From the days of
the Revolutionary War, our Civil War,
Korea, WW II, Viet Nam and the present day mid-east conflict, impressive
displays honored our nation’s servicemen and women. Also, there’s full-size
displays from the days of the Pilgrims,
inventions such as electrical generation and lights from the days of Edison,
huge steam engines, and ship and
land transportation including full size
locomotives. Imagine my shock when I
came across a ‘67 Grand Prix convertible. Except for its non-428 engine and
maroon paint, it’s just like HemiBoy”s!
Over thirty-two years and 150k miles,
its owners drove it to 49 states including Alaska, and to 251 national parks,
monuments, etc. They even slept in
the car. And the
owners are in the
car! Stuffed! Well,
ok, probably not.
Mannikins, more’n
likely. HemiBoy oughta donate his sister car
and the tales that go with it!
But the Revolutionary War section
was most interesting. On display were
George Washington’s uniform, sword
and scabbard, his camp chest for his
cooking and eating utensils, and a
small folding stool. What history. Such
irreplaceable treasures.
But I can hear Martha now, years
after the war when George is in retirement at Mount Vernon: “George, when
are you going to get rid of all that old
junk in the garage? Why do you keep
it? Are you going to start another war?
Throw it all out so I can have room on
the garage shelves for my
Christmas decorations!”

Showin’, swappin’ & burnin’ out!!!
Foster’s Freeze Vista, Jan
?? Hundreds of rods, trucks,
customs and muscle cars
showed up, as usual, for this
event, the earliest in San
Diego County. Cliff Cunningham’s ‘74 Challenger took
Best Mopar (better late than

Cliff is planning on making
the Carne Asada Run and
the Bottom Buster vintage
car run to Paso Robles.
21st Midnight At The Oasis, Mar 1-3, Yuma
Dan & Paula Smith, Clubmembers for forever,
scored the Most Distinctive award with their
T/A Challenger. Dan’s owned and babied this
to a high standard over the years. Long time
members may remember Paula as selling her
pink AAR 4/Speed Cuda a few years back
(true) to buy the Zippo Chrysler parade car
(not true, an April Fool story). Well deserved,
Dan & Paula!
Big 3 Swap Meet, Qualcomm Stadium Feb
22-24 The Club had its usual spot under the
trolley. Several members enjoyed the bbq
and some sold parts
to make room in the
garage for Xmas decorations.
JBA Speed Shop Coffee on the Mesa, Sun
Mar 10 Lots of cars appeared on the first day
of daylight savings,
including HemiBoy in
his Hemi Rumble Bee,
Tom Ziarkowski in his
fastback Mustang,
and Cliff Cunningham
in his Challenger. At right is the rubber left behind when HemiBoy burned out in
his RumbleBee truck. Those are two expensive piles
of rubber.
Upcoming Club Events! You’ll want
to put April 27 and July 13, both Saturdays, on your
calendars. The first date is the Club Cruise. We’ll
depart Casa Machado, head out to Borrego, and back
to Casa Signorelli for a bbq. The second date is a bbq
at Casa Signorelli to celebrate the Mopar Club’s 20th
Anniversary! Also, our All-American Car Show XV
is re-scheduled for the following weekend, Sat July
20. More info on these events to come!

Night
Rider....
Clubmember
Kristy Keller
grew up with
her daddy’s
‘47 Plymouth
Woodie. And
that rare piece
of Mopar history
has been
with her all her life. Yep, Kristy is a
Plymouth gal. Imagine her conflicted
feelings when she met her soulmate,
Jerry, a dedicated Dodge man. Since
his first car, he’d always owned Dodges, raced Dodges, and would never
consider having anything else in his
garage. Much less a Plymouth. Well,
it took a while, but that all got sorted
out as Jerry and Kristy realized their
love for each other was bigger than
their love for the badge on the hoods
of their cars. So, their garages held
nine Dodges and that one Plymouth
Woodie, including Kristy’s every-day
Dodge Stratus. This seemed about
right to both of them. Besides, they’re
all Mopars.
But recently, Kristy got the new car
itch when Clubmember Nick Dreyfus
of Carl Burger Jeep Chrysler Dodge
brought a bright
yellow 2012
Charger Super
Bee SRT8 to a
Club meeting.
Kristy liked what
she saw, even if
it was a Dodge.
Next day,
she and Jerry
dropped by the
dealership and
Kristy took that
Super Bee for a
test drive. Pulling
out of the lot,
she punched the
throttle. The rear
of the car came
right around,
much to her
surprise, but as
Kristy’s
got seat
time behind
the wheel of
a couple of
Jerry’s race
cars, she
caught it right
away. But
“whooeee!”,
thought
Kristy, maybe
the 392 c.i.
SRT8 has a
tad too much
sting for her
needs driving
around town.
Returning to
the dealership, Nick mentioned that she
might be more interested in a 5.7 liter
V-8 powered Charger. “No, I don’t think
so”, she said, “I like the new Charger
but I really like this high impact yellow
color.” Nick mentioned that there was a
Charger in a different color on the lot
that she might like. It came with the
Mopar Design package. Only 1500
are to be produced for each year.
This appearance group adds to the
R/T Charger a non-metallic Pitch
Black paint with intense Mopar blue
accents, and a lot of other goodies.
The accents include twin longitudinal
stripes on the driver’s side, which are
repeated in the black leather driver’s
side seats, front and rear. Blue stitching continues the theme in the seats
and leather wrapped steering wheel.
Unique carbon fiber dash panels and
bright aluminum Mopar Design sill
plates, special 20” aluminum wheels
and an exhaust system with quad tips
are also part of the package. Also,
there are beefy front and rear aluminum shock tower braces that add
chassis stiffness, a feature that Kristy
liked for carving up those canyon
roads. And with a Mopar Performance
cold-air intake, Kristy thought the 390
hp that the 5.7 liter Hemi delivers on
the test drive was just about right. The
20+ mpg on regular gas with the MDS
technology was a bonus. Yeah, Kristy
liked the Mopar Design Charger, all
right, and she traded in her Stratus
and drove this Charger home that very
day. And she named it Night Rider.
No, Kristy couldn’t get a new Plymouth to satisfy her new car itch, as the
brand lost the corporate down-size
coin flip a few years back. What’s a
girl to do?
Kristy will admit that Jerry’s devotion
to Dodge and Nick showing her a very
special Charger was just what this
Plymouth gal was looking for.
Above: Kristy’s Mopar Design Charger is the tenth
Mopar in the Keller garages. It fits right in, as all
are Dodges. Well, except
for her dad’s ‘47 Plymouth
Woodie.
The Mopar Design Charger features Pitch Black nonmetallic paint with Mopar blue racing stripes, which
are repeated on the driver’s side front and rear leather
seats. Also included are special 20” diameter wheels
with Goodyear F-1 tires and front and rear shock tower
braces. Clubmember Kristy Keller’s ‘2011 edition is
#1353 out of 1500 built. She named it “Night Rider”.
Left: the R/T 5.7 liter Hemi
puts out close to 390 hp
with the Mopar Performance cold air intake, and
free-breathing exhaust
that come with the Mopar
Design package.
