Everyone who attended the Blahs Bash enjoyed the various activities and an enjoyable lunch. PROGRAM COORDINATOR’S CORNER By Leslie Dondale 613 580 2828 Ex 2 [HOME] WHAT’S UP AND COMING [HOME] LUNCH AT SIR GUY CARLETON SECONDARY SCHOOL The school has had to postpone the March 12th lunch, so the next lunch will be on April 16th at 11:30 a.m. The cost of the lunch is now $11.50. This is an amazing price for the wonderful three course lunch, including homemade rolls and coffee or tea. We will need a minimum of 40 tickets sold in order for the lunches to proceed however we had waiting lists in the spring so buy your tickets soon or you may be out of luck. Because the school was unable to accommodate us for the month of March, they will try to squeeze one in for May. MILITARY WHIST [HOME] th The next one will be held on Friday, March 20 at 7 p.m. The cost is $6.00 and includes cash prizes and delicious refreshments provided by Island View Suites. There might still be some tickets available. Check with the office. The following one will be on Friday, April 17th and the delicious refreshments will be provided by The Ravines Retirement Residence. eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 2 SLOTS TRIP [HOME] st The next Slots Trip is taking place on Tuesday, March 31 . The bus will be leaving the Seniors Centre at 4:00 p.m. and returning around 9:00 p.m. Cost is $12 for members, $15 for non-members and it includes transportation, $10 token voucher and $5 food voucher. Please see the enclosed flyer for all the details. This is used as a fundraiser for the Centre, so come on out for some fun while supporting your Seniors Centre at the same time. The one after that will be on Tuesday, June 16th. The same incentives will apply. VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION EVENT [HOME] On April 13th, during National Volunteer Appreciation Week, we will be celebrating all the work our volunteers do in keeping this Centre running. The Ravines has graciously agreed to host the event again this year at their residence. Invitations will be given out closer to the event. I know how busy you all are so mark your calendars now. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT [HOME] th On Friday, April 24 we will be co-hosting a Euchre Tournament with Crystal View Lodge. It will take place at Crystal View Lodge from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Due to the room size, space is limited to 12 spots for us and 12 for the residents of Crystal View. If you are interested in signing up, please see Doug at Euchre or Leslie. You can sign up as an individual. The tournament is free and will include a light lunch. DANCE COMPETITIONS [HOME] Every year the Canadian Dance Competitions and the American Dance Awards take place here at the Nepean Sportsplex. The dates are April 22nd to May 3rd. Due to the large number of contestants, we are not able to use the concourse those dates for Shuffleboard or Carpet Bowling. As well the parking lot will be very busy. Please consider carpooling. SNOWSHOEING AND CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING [HOME] We will continue to use the trails located behind the Sportsplex on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. and Fridays at 1:00 p.m. as long as the trail conditions permit. SPRING IS COMING Remember to put your clocks and watches an hour forward on Sunday, March 8th, 2015. eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 7 WHAT WE HAVE BEEN GETTING UP TO [HOME] CARPET BOWLING By Alida Dopplinger - We have experienced a considerable increase in attendance recently and, as a result, we now use all four carpets instead of two or three. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on the Concourse and stop for coffee in between sets. The fee is $1.00!!! Plus 25cents for tea or coffee or cocoa and a cookie or two. Join us; it is an interesting game and fun too! COMPUTER CLUB [HOME] By the Editor for Joan Lang – Our meetings are on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 9:30 a.m. However there is no meeting on March 17th. Locations for the other March and April meetings will be in Studio # 2, and reminder emails will be sent out to club members. Old and new members of all levels are encouraged to participate. The first meeting of each month is a round table discussion of typical computer problems which the members can discuss and try to resolve. Out of these discussions, members may choose a topic which requires further information, or instruction during the third week of each month. CONTRACT BRIDGE [HOME] By Gopal Kunchur - With so many things happening simultaneously, our Christmas Luncheon took place on January 21st! Most of the members attended this event. The main course was hot and delicious homemade chili (prepared by Sheila and Dorothy). There was a big spread of salads, cheese, bread, crackers, pickles, several kinds of mouth watering desserts with tea or coffee. We would like to thank Sheila, Dorothy, Eadie, Elizabeth, Gail, Margrit, Norma Jean, Vera and other volunteers for their enthusiastic assistance. During our last week's session somebody asked me what would be a bidding choice with 14 to 16 high card points between a suit call of 5 card major and a no-trump? eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 8 The rule is with a no-trump bid you must have at least 3 cards in another major. Then if the responder transfers to other major, you would still have a fit. Hands with aces and kings play well in suit, however kings and queens are preferable in a no-trump bid. When you open in first or second position, plan your rebid in advance. A notrump opening will indicate balanced hand. With unbalanced hand the opener should make a descriptive bid. Anyone who wishes to play a reasonably high level of bridge in a friendly and social environment is most welcome on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Heritage room. CREATIVE CRAFT GROUP [HOME] By Donna Butler - We started off 2015 with having a group breakfast at a local restaurant in Barrhaven. One of the things we do every year at the beginning of the year is sort the poker chits, as all members of the Senior Centre have a number. One of the things this number is used is for the biweekly Attendance Draw. We also arrange the flags for the Military Whist card nights. The ladies are starting to work on a Quilt for a draw to take place in the future. The knitters are busy making lovely items for our two showcases, group sales and for charity. Since we are a fund raising group for the Senior Centre we raised over $2,000 in 2014. At the Christmas Breakfast we raised $843 with our sales and the draw for the afghan. After the Christmas Breakfast we gathered up and sent items to the Nepean Resource Centre, 7 baby hats, 7 baby sweater and hat sets, 7 baby sweaters and 10 new born hats. To the Shepherds of Good Hope we sent, 1 shawl, 9 adult scarf and hat sets, 6 adult hats, 2 children’s hat and mitt sets, 1 pr of mitts, 2 ladies sweaters, 7 ladies vests, 2 men’s sweaters, 3 children’s hat and scarf sets, 6 children’s hats and 1 pr of men’s socks. All of these items are made from donated yarn or fabric. Thank you everyone for your donations to our group. We also tie Quilts for Victoria's Quilts at least once a month which are sent to cancer patients. eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 9 We have about 15 members and we meet in Hall F on Thursdays between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and for those who wish they may stay until 11:30 a.m. New members are welcomed. We serve coffee and cookies. CRIBBAGE [HOME] th By Ken Hancock - On December 18 , 2014, Dennis Langeuin and Pat Duggan started our recorded successes for this scoring year by a Memorable Round of 45 points. Not to be outdone, on January 20th, 2015, John Stephens enjoyed a very Memorable Hand of 28. Our Current Champion Scorer Contender is Jake Enns, followed by Margarete Scholze and Gerry Juneau. Since the last issue we have had great pleasure in welcoming three new players: Debbie Grav and Joe and Sue Maniscalco. Our Christmas party on December 12th, at Macey’s Best Western Hotel, was its usual great success with fifty of us enjoying it, thanks to Sadie, Bernice and the many others of you who helped. Shown on the right is our final Champion Scorer for 2014, Gerry Juneau, receiving the club trophy at the party from Sadie. Our thanks to Lou Webb for the photo. On Thursday, January 9th Nada Wolfe, who twenty seven years ago found our Cribbage Club, played with us for the last time before moving to Belleville to be close to her son and daughter-in-law. Nada, who has just celebrated her nine-sixth birthday, will be greatly missed by all of us who welcomed her sharp wit and sharper crib playing. We are always pleased to welcome anyone wishing to join us. Simply show up in the Heritage room any Tuesday or Thursday afternoon around 12:50 and eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 10 we will be happy to include you in the fun. We start at 1:00 p.m. and go on to around 3:30 p.m. at the end of eight games. CURLING [HOME] By Lloyd Nieman – The Curling Club started off the second half of another successful season on January 6th. Between 40 and 60 members share in two hours of friendly competition with a little exercise thrown in. There is room for up to 80 curlers, so feel free to join us any time. We curl Tuesday and Thursday mornings, meeting at the Spectators’ annex between 8:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m., then curling from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cookies and good conversation are available after the game. The cost is $4.00 per day to cover ice rental and refreshments. The curling season ends March 19th, with our final games, the Annual General Meeting and the awards banquet at Capones. DUPLICATE BRIDGE [HOME] By Kevin Ryan – Between December 3rd, 2014 and January 30th, 2015 there were 31 events with a total of 524 pairs participating. The top scores recorded during the period (above 65%) are listed below: This also marks the first time that greater than 12% of our participants scored more than 65%. I would explain what this means statistically – if I had any idea – but it is a fact nevertheless. Congratulations to all this sessions honourees (listed below) but the MVP award this session goes to David Fried – who notched up at least 6 and possibly 7 scores above 65% (not sure if he was the David playing with Zbigniew) - including two of only four scores of 70% or above 1. Each week, new people have joined which makes up for members who go south, or are ill; there's still an average of 65 players each week. As shown in the pictures, our Christmas party was a huge success; 71 members attended. The pictures reflect the delicious catered dinner, happy faces, and a table full of door prizes. We enjoyed a full afternoon of euchre, and everyone left with a full tummy and a gift. Thanks to Donna Caron, our president, for all her hard work, making the party a huge success; and also thanks to those who helped with the set up and clean up. Although members strive for high scores and the most lone hands each week, everyone is there for a good time and that is definitely achieved considering the noise level of laughter in the room. Seventeen tables of four are set up each week and we are not opposed to setting up more as we are always looking for new members. eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 12 Therefore, if you wish to make euchre part of your weekly plan, we meet each Tuesday afternoon in Hall F. Refreshments are at 12:30 p.m. and playing begins at 12:45 p.m. sharp. We try to finish by 3:15 p.m. allowing those who take Para Transpo and other arranged transportation to get their rides on time. The cost is $2.00 per week. 500 CLUB [HOME] By Lorrie Wilson- Our long cold winter shows in the varying attendance for 500. We range from 4 to 7 tables, depending on who is on vacation, ill, or reluctant to face the weather. Scores have been lower this two-month period than the last. High scorers are as follows: Diane Irwin with 4680 Doug Hicks with 4190 Bill Wilson with 4120 Joan O'Meara bid and made a fantastic Ten No Trump! Way to go, Joan! We continue to meet on Thursday afternoons in the Heritage Room at 12:45, to start play at 1:00, to give time for announcements. New members are welcome. Come and join us. 5-PIN BOWLING [HOME] By Roger and Marsha Hack – With winter well underway, indoor bowling is one activity which can be enjoyed no matter what the weather. Participation in our regular Monday afternoon bowling seems to be on an upward swing, with our attendance now averaging well over 50, and sometimes over 60. Please note: There will be no bowling on Family Day, February 16th, nor on March Break day, March 16th. Our final day of bowling, and end-of-season party, will be held on Monday, April 20th. Although it is a non-competitive bowling league, we do track averages throughout the season, including high individual games and 3-game series; and we will be presenting prizes to celebrate special achievements (with and without handicap, so all have a chance to win). A few door prizes will be drawn as well. Hope to see everyone there! Monday afternoon bowling will resume for the 2015 to 2016 season on September 14th. New bowlers are always welcome to join us (at the Merivale Bowling Centre, 1916 Merivale Road). Please arrive by 12:30 for a 1:00 p.m. start. For further information, please contact: Roger & Marsha Hack, (613) 225-1420, [email protected] eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 13 FUN BRIDGE GROUP ☺ [HOME] By Wilma Matchett – To say that Bob Paterson was shocked when partner John Batson gradually increased the bidding to 7 No Trump is a bit of an understatement - but then Bob was elated when he met the challenge. A great way to start off the New Year! Among our regular members are several nonagenarians who have been feted on their birthdays this first quarter of 2015. There is one lady who will be celebrating her 99th birthday soon and we are looking forward to helping her celebrate her century year. These people are great role models for all of us. There are many experienced bridge players who are more than willing to coach bridge class graduates and those coming back to the game after an absence of several years. We don't keep score but we all enjoy a competitive but relaxing few games of bridge every week. The Fun Bridge Group meets every Friday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Heritage Room. Participants usually arrive around 12:30 p.m. and start playing bridge when their table has 4 players. Players change every half hour after our official start time. NEPEAN SONGSTERS [HOME] Betty Usher – After a busy December, the Songsters are back in the swing of it with the New Year. Weekly practices started January 8th with music for our next concert on SATURDAY November 7th, 2015. This is a switch from our usual Sunday afternoon show. Same place, Centrepointe Studio Theatre, same time, 2 p.m. but not a Sunday. We are hoping this won’t deter our usual audience. We’re also back into a schedule of sing-outs at residences and elsewhere. Earlier in the fall we had a fundraiser for new music and, thanks to lots of support from Seniors Centre members and outside supporters, we were successful. Just a reminder – if you would like to join us, come out to the Heritage Room on a Thursday morning from 9:00 a.m. until 11 a.m. Come and sit in, see if you enjoy it and, if so, our membership fee is $60 for the year. You must be a eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 14 member of the Seniors Centre as well. We provide the music. You’ll get a warm welcome!! OUR LIBRARY [HOME] By Bill Wilson - As you probably noticed, new shelves have been installed. We now have more room, which means we can now accept more books. It would be helpful if our books were rearranged for easier use. Any ideas and offers to help do this on a routine basis would be greatly appreciated. SHUFFLEBOARD [HOME] By Ken Hancock – I'm sorry to have to report that, perhaps due to the weather, in some sessions our numbers have been quite low. So to all old (and new) Members who would like to have a fun afternoon, come and play with us from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Monday and or Wednesday, on the concourse. Please note that due to the Canadian Dance Competitions and the American Dance Awards there will not be any Shuffleboard on April 22nd, 27th or 29th. Travel Planning for 2016: As usual, the January to March meetings at the Travel Club are busy researching new travel opportunities for 2016, and it’s beginning to look like an exciting year for travel for our members. In the May and June issue of the Hub and eHub, we will be releasing more information about possible 2016 destinations, however, if you or a group of friends have ideas about a travel in 2016, please let us know. You can email us with your ideas at [email protected]. VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR’S REPORT [HOME] By JoAnne Hambrook - Congratulations to the many Volunteers who worked so hard in 2014 to make our year a tremendous success. We had 18,358 hours reported. This is the highest number ever recorded by our Seniors Centre! Volunteers will be recognized at the annual Volunteer Day Luncheon. The luncheon will be held again this year at The Ravines. So keep Monday April 13th, 2015 open for an afternoon of fun and friendship. Our membership has grown and all our activities are reporting an increase in attendance, so let's see if we can beat 2014 hours in 2015. * * * eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 16 MEMBER'S MEMORABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS [HOME] This section, which we haven’t been able to include in the Hub for almost a year, highlights various accomplishments that are of interest to our readers that Members have achieved outside of the Centre’s activities. We would like to be able to continue this feature as space permits, so please let the Hub editor, Ken Hancock, ([email protected] or 613 225 6385) know of any memorable events that you have had at any time in your lives as seniors that you would like to share with readers. The Member's Memorable Accomplishments that we are highlighting in this issue are those of Member Elaine Salamon, but she responds just as well to the name The Greek Lady, which has been earned by her selfless dedication to the Ottawa's Greek community for over forty years. Many of you know Elaine as a comparative newcomer to our Cribbage club, who, starting off from scratch with no knowledge of the game now holds her own and is among the high scorers. What is far less known by our Members as a whole, are her many Ottawa-Greek community activities. For example she has contributed to the GreekFest for most of the forty one years of its existence. One of the things she continues to do for this festival is to make and sell the delicious honey dipped pastries called loukomades. All of the proceeds of these sales go to the Ottawa Food Bank. One of her certificates recognizing her work for the GreekFest is shown on the right. Another example of Elaine’s community work are her contributions to the Parkinson SuperWalk Event, year-by-year. This nation-wide event of the Parkinson Society raises funds for support services, education, research and advocacy into Parkinsons Disease. While her age prevents Elaine’s participation in the SuperWalk itself, she has been for many years a very energetic collector of funds for the event, being the top local collector in 2008 and 2010. In addition, in 2009, Elaine was one of those awarded the eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 17 Parkinson Society’s Gold Star Pin, presented ONLY to the top 900 participants of all of the thousands in all elements of this national event (see photos). Any article on Elaine would not be complete without mention of her career with BA Banknote, who prints banknotes, bonds, traveller’s cheques, postage stamps, passports and so on for countries throughout the world. Elaine’s work there gained national media coverage in 2000 with a multi-column photo of her checking the serial numbers of that year’s Canada Savings Bonds before they were shipped nationwide. eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 18 JUST TO GIVE YOU A SMILE, WE ASK: [HOME] WHAT IS A SEVEN HUNDRED & TEN? A few days ago I was having some work done at my local garage when a new customer came in and asked for a seven hundred & ten. We all looked at each other and another customer asked, 'What is a seven hundred & ten?' The reply was. 'You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine, I have lost it and need a new one, I don’t know exactly what it is, but this piece had always been there. The mechanic gave the new customer a piece of paper and a pen to draw the piece so he could see what it looked like. The customer drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710. The mechanic shook his head and walked over to another car which had its hood up and asked 'Is there a seven hundred & ten on this car?' 'Of course’ was the reply and pointing, said, ‘it's right there!' If you're not sure what a seven hundred & ten is.... look below! DID YOU EVER WONDER WHY? [HOME] 1 - Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left? Because - When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 19 dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since. 2 - Why do ships and aircraft use mayday as their call for help? Because -This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning help me - and is pronounced, approximately, mayday. 3 - Why are zero scores in tennis called love? [HOME] Because - In France, where tennis first became popular, the round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called l'oeuf, which is French for 'the egg.' When tennis was introduced into North America it was (naturally), mispronounced 'love.' eHub Edition 2015-02 March & April 20 Monthly Calendars [HOME] Sun 1 12:30 Duplicate Bridge 8 12:30 Duplicate Bridge 15 12:30 Duplicate Bridge 22 12:30 Duplicate Bridge 29 12:30 Duplicate Bridge Mon ~ March 2015 ~ Wed Tue Thu Fri Sat 2 3 4 5 6 10:30 Chair Exercise, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing 11:00 Line Dancing 1:00 5 Pin Bowling, Floor Shuffleboard 9:00 Tai Chi 9:30 Computer Club, Curling 10:00 Memory Fitness 12:45 Euchre 1:00 Cribbage, Carpet Bowling, Tap 9:00 Foot Care Clinic, Chair Exercise 1:00 Bridge, Floor Shuffleboard 6:30 Duplicate Bridge 9:00 Registration starts online 9:00 Choir, Creative Crafts 9:30 Curling 1:00 Cribbage, 500, Tap, Carpet Bowling, Duplicate Bridge 9:00 Chair Exercise 1:00 Fun Bridge, Duplicate Bridge, snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing 9 10 11 12 13 9:00 Tai Chi 9:30 Curling 10:00 Memory Fitness 12:45 Euchre 1:00 Cribbage, Carpet Bowling, Tap 9:00 Chair Exercise 9:30 Board Meeting 1:00 Bridge, Floor Shuffleboard 6:30 Duplicate Bridge 9:00 Choir, Creative Crafts 9:30 Curling 1:00 Cribbage, 500, Tap, Carpet Bowling, Duplicate Bridge * 9:00 Chair Exercise 10:00 Cuba trip wrap-up meeting 1:00 Fun Bridge, Duplicate Bridge, snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing 14 10:30 Chair Exercise, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing 11:00 Line Dancing 1:00 5 Pin Bowling, Floor Shuffleboard 16 17 Happy St Patrick’s Day! 18 19 20 21 10:30 Snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing 11:00 Line Dancing 1:00 No 5 Pin Bowling today, Floor Shuffleboard 9:00 Tai Chi 9:30 Curling, No Computer Club today 10:00 Memory Fitness 12:45 Euchre 1:00 Cribbage, Carpet Bowling, Tap 9:00 Chair Exercise 1:00 Bridge, Floor Shuffleboard 6:30 Duplicate Bridge 9:00 Choir, Creative Crafts 9:30 Curling 1:00 Cribbage, 500, Tap, Carpet Bowling, Duplicate Bridge 1:00 Fun Bridge, No Duplicate Bridge today, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing 7:00 Military Whist 23 24 25 26 27 10:30 Chair Exercise 11:00 Line Dancing 1:00 5 Pin Bowling, Floor Shuffleboard 10:00 Memory Fitness 12:45 Euchre 1:00 Cribbage, Carpet Bowling, Tap 9:00 Foot Care Clinic, Chair Exercise 1:00 Bridge, Floor Shuffleboard 6:30 Duplicate Bridge 9:00 Choir, Creative Crafts 1:00 Cribbage, 500, Tap, Carpet Bowling, Duplicate Bridge 30 31 Notes: 10:30 Chair Exercise 11:00 Line Dancing 1:00 5 Pin Bowling, Floor Shuffleboard 9:00 Tai Chi 10:00 Memory Fitness 12:45 Euchre 1:00 Cribbage, Carpet Bowling, Tap 4:00 Slots Trip * Means Attendance Draw * 9:00 Chair Exercise 10:00 Meet n’ Greet for Washington trip 1:00 Fun Bridge, Duplicate Bridge 7 28 9:30 iPad level 3 For a Foot Care Clinic Appointment please call Dee at 613-591-3686.
