Campaign for State Registration
Reaches Parliament
The Hair Council’s campaign to
introduce the compulsory state
registration of qualified hairdressers
and barbers to professionalise and
regulate the industry was debated
in the House of Commons on
Wednesday 7th January.
Following a meeting last year with
ISA’s Chair of the Board Shirley
Davis-Fox and Hair Council Registrar
Sally Styles, Nia Griffith, MP for
Llanelli, secured an adjournment
debate and called on Government to
review the current regulation of the
industry.
Shirley, who attended the debate,
hopes this is a significant stepping
stone towards the compulsory state
registration of hairdressers and
barbers.
“We have worked really hard to
secure this parliamentary debate
and are delighted that a Welsh
MP is leading it,” said Shirley. “Our
campaign has won cross party
support across the UK and we now
want to take it to the next level.
“I would love to see the compulsory
state registration of hairdressers
and barbers introduced as soon
as possible. At the suggestion of
the Prime Minister’s Office, the Hair
Council has secured support for the
campaign from all stakeholders in
the hairdressing industry, so we are
moving forward with a united front.”

On January 19th a delegation from
the Hair Council met with the Prime
Minister’s Senior Advisors to discuss
the campaign. While they were
at 10 Downing Street they had an
unexepected opportunity to meet
with David Cameron. It was evident
that Mr. Cameron had great respect
for the hairdressing sector and those
working in it.
Closer to home, Coleg Sir Gâr in
Llanelli recently joined the campaign
when a dozen hairdressing lecturers
became state registered.
Salons, hairdressers and colleges
interested in joining the state
registration campaign are asked to
contact Shirley on 01656 869986.

The award recognises her tireless
campaigning to promote the
professionalism of the hairdressing
industry, driving up standards,
offering outstanding opportunities
to ISA Training’s apprentices and
gathering respect and recognition
for the vibrant hair sector and all
who are qualified and practice
within it.
“I feel so honoured to receive this
recognition just for doing my job,”
she said. “Anita Roddick said that
to succeed you have to believe in
something with such a passion that
it becomes reality. I passionately
believe in the hair sector and the
professionalism of hairdressing.”
“Being a member of the Hair Council
has allowed me to take my passion
for training and standards in the hair
sector to the next level and to become
politically involved,” she added.

Casey Coleman’s Australian
Global Synergy Adventure
Casey Coleman, Salon Director at
Ocean Hair, Cardiff was crowned UK
winner of Global Synergy at Salon
International 2014, The competition,
funded by Australian Hairdresser
of the Year Emiliano Vitale invites
young hairstylists from across the
world to embark on an inspirational
journey, meeting the industry’s
finest icons along the way.
I visited Sydney Wella studios to
meet the New Zealand winner, Kiri
Kirkby. Watching the world icons
plan their haircuts and helping the
Wella team organise the next few
days, none of us could believe
what we were about to embark on.
A whirlwind trip to Australia to join
the team at ‘Ssshhh The Oz Secret’
was Casey’s prize. Here is an
extract from his blog which captures
the incredible experience.
“I was about to board a 24 hour
flight to Australia to work with worldwide icons; Emiliano Vitale (Aus),
Robert Lobetta (UK/LA), Xpression
Creativos (Spn), Brooks & Brooks
(UK), Benni Tognini (Aus) & Richard
Ashforth (UK), on Australia’s biggest
independent hair production.
I was welcomed by the Ssshhh The
Oz Secret team and I knew that
what was about to happen was
going to blow my mind. This team of
hairdressing icons were ready to
show Australia what they’re about
and let everyone into their creative
process and mind set.
Saturday was guaranteed to be
a day filled with hard work at the
Wella studio prepping all of the
models, I was lucky enough to
assist & colour Richard Ashforth’s &
Pierre Saint Sever’s (SACO) model.
I had to pinch myself!
Sunday was the big day,
anticipated for months. Ssshhh The
Oz Secret was going live and as a
global synergy winner, I was going
to be part of it. Richard prepped
his AMAZING haircut and Pierre
prepped his beautiful hair up, I
assisted & made sure everything
was running smoothly. The models
looked stunning showcasing the
incredible head pieces that Pierre
had made.
Still buzzing from what I can only
describe as an incredible show,
Monday was upon us with a master
class, then it was over. To celebrate
we were off to a barbecue. To end
the perfect evening, Emiliano, Benni
and Robert told us what Ssshhh
The Oz Secret meant to them, it was
the most emotional part of my trip.
My love for hairdressing grew even
larger after this incredible week.
Leaving Australia, I still feel like it
was a dream. Global Synergy isn’t
just about hairdressing, It’s about
sharing a love, putting yourself out
of your comfort zone and allowing
yourself to grow. I implore you
to enter in 2015. If you want a life
changing experience, go global!”
ISA Learner Photo Shoot
It may have been a cold Monday in
November but magic was happening
inside photographer Keith Davies’
Cardiff Bay studio when the first ever
ISA Learner Photoshoot took place.
Directed by Ian Davies of Ocean
Cardiff, four learners were selected
to take part in the Osyter Experience;
Emily Bates, Jazz, Magor; Lauren
Wynne, Ocean, Cardiff; Nikita Tandy,
Aqua, Cardiff; and Stephanie
Symonds, Vale Resort Spa, Hensol.
Both Ian and Keith were impressed
with the professionalism of the
learners and how smoothly the day
went. Some amazing images were
captured which will be used on the
covers of this year’s editions of Hot
Gossip. This edition’s cover is styled
by Level 3 Apprentice Lauren Wynne.
The learners enjoyed the preparation
leading up to the shoot, creating
different looks and seeing how
well they came out on camera.
They will also use the experience
for competition work and to help
the juniors in their salon with their
competition work and creativity.
“Most of the learners learnt a
different side to hairdressing which
opened their eyes to opportunities
in photographic and editorial
work” said Clare Jeffries, Head of
Apprenticeships “which is exactly
what The Oyster Project aims to do.”
Learner
Loop
In December learners reviewed
ISA’s Oyster Strategy and
fed back some ideas for
improvements. These included:
•
An annual Inspirational Day to meet with past ISA learners who have gone on to achieve great things.
• Hold more master classes, rather than one a year, so sessions are held for Level 2, Level 3 and Beauty
Learners.
• An annual bursary for an Award in Education and Training.
A new look Oyster Strategy for
2015-2016 has been created to
incorporate these suggestions
which will result in additional
opportunities for up to 80
learners over the next year.
We will be inviting applications
for new Learner Voice team
members during February. If
you are interested in shaping
the future of ISA Training
contact Clare Jeffries for a chat
on 07980 002 776.
Higher Apprenticeships
ISA will soon be offering Higher
Apprenticeships in Management
for all age groups. If anyone
is interested in this opportunity
please contact Clare Jeffries on

Spotlight on Kutz n Kurlz
Be Flash and Keep Your Cash!
The Kutz N Kurlz Team have been
out in full force recently supporting
their community and charities.
Owner Donna Wallbank is of the
view that if you make a living from
the community you have a moral
obligation to be fully part of it
and to do as much as you can to
empower it.
The Money for Life Challenge is a
competition for teams of apprentices
across the UK to come up with money
saving schemes that could benefit
everyone.
Salon Manager, Stephanie Edwards
completed the Cardiff Half Marathon
in October raising £1,037 for Velindre
Hospital. Whilst Stephanie was busy
training, the rest of the salon team
were getting ready to be part of the
Halloween ‘Scare on the Square’
event, a fun, safe and friendly town
event for children and one the salon
team got really engaged with!
In December the salon were part of
the Brynmawr Community Raffle and
late night opening event, an idea
proposed by Donna who is also
Chair of Brynmawr Business Forum.
Every person who purchased a
product or service in the town were
entered into a massive prize draw.
This year the team have chosen
to support Mary’s Meals to feed
a minimum of 25 children in the
poorest parts of Africa in 2015.
Why 25 children? Donna explains
“The salon celebrates its 25th
Anniversary in March – so there’s
going to be lots of 25s in all we
do. I am really proud of my team
and all who have been part of
our 25 years in business, it’s been
full of amazing achievements.
The training of and working with
amazing inspirational people and
some brilliant companies and our
commitment of providing service
without compromise, to do more, be
more and give more remains a focus
for the future.”

Team ISA consisting of Joely
McNamara, Fran Richards, Jody
Ann Gough and Vincenza Butchers
are researching into whether luxury
cosmetics are worth the money hence
the title of their project : Be Flash and
Keep Your Cash.
They took to the streets of Bridgend
to conduct their research in January
and surprisingly the results showed
that over half those asked said that
when applied, the budget brand
cosmetics looked better than the more
expensive ones.
Vincenza said “Once the research
is complete we will be taking our
findings on a roadshow to promote
to young people that ‘budget can be
best’ and people can save money by
buying a cheaper brand but still look
good.” She added “Our aim is to win
the Welsh final in April and get to the
UK final in May.
Coffee and Catch Up
28 salon owners and managers
attended ISA’s first Catch up and
Coffee event at our office on 26th
January 2015. The event was designed
to be informal and to cover topics that
would bring immediate benefits back
at the salons.
We are already planning the next one
and following feedback received we
will allow more time for networking
and general discussion between the
groups.
What was very obvious is that we had
a wealth of resources in the room and
everybody was very willing to share
their ideas, be inspired and learn from
each other - a recipe for success!
