Saint Andrew School Newsletter January 19, 2015 From the Principal’s Desk The mission of Saint Andrew School is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ in order to empower students to live the message of the Gospel, to foster a community of practiced faith and to promote a generous spirit that brings forth service to others. The faculty and staff work together to create a loving atmosphere that fosters and maintains the spiritual, social and academic needs of students, and to instill a lifetime appreciation for learning in all members of our school community. Saint Andrew Catholic Education Center 51 Wrights Rd. Newtown, PA 18940 Phone: 215-968-2685 Fax: 215-968-4795 Email: www.standrewcec.com This week at the sixth grade class liturgy, Father Wilson spoke about service in the homily. He noted that our sixth graders have a service requirement for Confirmation but he wished they were required to do community service after receiving all of the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit. After Mass, I informed Father that we do have service requirements in seventh and eighth grade as well. Years ago, I realized that most of our students attend high schools with service requirements, I thought: why should we stop service in seventh and eighth grade? I spoke to the sixth graders after Mass and told them that service should become a habit. Like piano lessons and soccer games, you improve with exercise and practice. We must get into the mindset of performing community service. I told the sixth graders a story about one of our graduates, who happens to be my daughter. About six times a year, she goes into inner city schools in Washington, D.C. and meets with the principals. In cooperation with the administration, she designs murals for the schools. Laura sketches out the mural on huge walls throughout the schools. She makes it like a paint by number. On Saturday mornings, a group from Hands on DC comes in and paints in the sketch. Laura’s murals are gorgeous, and the students are delighted when they return to school on Monday. I have even seen one of her murals in a television commercial. Last year she was asked to paint a very large painting of the Capitol. The painting was featured in the annual banquet for Hands on DC. She was named Volunteer of the Year; the painting was hung in a national gallery and eventually purchased for a great deal of money, which was used to help pay for more paint supplies. In addition to her work with Hands on DC, Laura is president of the Young Alumni at American University. Having just been married in August, we are still working out our relationship as daughter and mother/mother-in-law. I do not want to be too interfering. I found a MotherDaughter Bucket List on Pinterest (one of my passions!) I emailed it to Laura and said we should do some of the things. She sent it back immediately with items highlighted that she would like to do right away. One of the items was to work in a food pantry. She informed me that she volunteered weekly. I had no idea. My daughter, the queen of the spreadsheet, told me that she organizes all of the canned food donations. She told me that you cannot believe some of the things that come in cans. So, the next time I go to visit DC, I’ll be beside Laura in the food pantry, volunteering side by side. Scholarship Received! We have been just informed by Holy Ghost Preparatory School that Peter Taylor has received a Trustee scholarship. Fantastic, Peter! Scholarship Received!! As part of our Catholic commitment to safe environments, the Archdiocese recently updated its policies and training curriculum for mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. If you have direct contact with children, you may be a mandated reporter. Judy Weaver is our Safe Environment Coordinator and will be working with our parish in the coming weeks to educate mandated reporters about their responsibilities and how to properly report child abuse to ChildLine, PA’s 24hour child abuse reporting hotline. In the meantime, Judy can be reached at 215968-2685 ext. 266 with any questions. Information is available at www.childyouthprotection.org.
