BECOMING
A BETTER
CHEF
Chef Andrea with Charles.
Charles Stewart had his own cleaning
business, but was having trouble making
ends meet. He also did some catering
on the side, and thought he was good
at it. One day he saw a flyer for the Chef
Training School at West Side Campaign
Against Hunger hanging in his building
in West Harlem. Maybe with improved
skills and experience, he could make his
catering business a success? He applied
to and was accepted in the Chef Training.
While Charles attended class, he also
availed himself of other services at West
Side Campaign Against Hunger. He
regularly used the pantry to help put
food on the table. A counselor helped
him enroll in Medicaid. He also met with a
financial counselor from New York Legal
Assistance Group, one of our partner
organizations. Being able to budget is
essential to making limited income last—
and also critical if you are planning to
operate your own business.
Charles excelled during the twelve-week
Chef Training. He improved his knife skills
and learned more about nutrition. He
broadened his culinary knowledge and
added to his understanding of proper
kitchen sanitation. Upon graduation,
he got a job working in the kitchen
of a partner organization, Westside
Ecumenical Ministry to the Elderly. He
now makes prepared meals that are
delivered to homebound elderly.
Charles likes what he is doing, and is
happy to be helping people, but he
continues to cater on the side. One day
he plans to use his skills and experience
to have his own full-time catering
business. West Side Campaign Against
Hunger doesn’t just feed people. We
help them stand on their own two feet.
GABRIELA
Counselor Delilah Guzman speaks with a client.
When her family suffered an economic
setback, 72-year-old Gabriela returned
to New York from Texas. When she
came to West Side Campaign Against
Hunger, she was living in a homeless
shelter on the Upper West Side of
Manhattan. Gabriela received healthy
food in our pantry and met with a
counselor to see if she was eligible for
benefits and if we could improve her
housing situation.
After assessing Gabriela for benefits,
our counselors determined that she was
eligible for Food Stamps/Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
and Medicaid health insurance. In the
past, Gabriela received Supplemental
Security Income through Social Security
for a significant physical disability. We
helped restore those benefits, which
were interrupted due to the move and
the instability

appointments so
she could better manage her health. With
her SSI benefits restored, Gabriela was
able to find an apartment and leave the
shelter system. By providing her with
food and helping her access benefits, we
were able to stabilize her life.

TRAINING
Graduates pose with their certificates of completion.
The Chef Training School helps students build skills and
knowledge in food preparation and nutrition to ready them
for careers in the food industry. Students learn knife skills,
butchering, basic culinary terminology, and valuable hands-on
experience in a kitchen.

ADVOCACY & COMMUNITY
Our daily interaction with clients in our pantry gives us insight
into their needs. They know what’s best for themselves and
their families. As an organization we participate in community
and coalitions to help ensure that the voices of the families who
come to us are heard and that decisions and policies reflect
their needs. In this effort, we work with many schools, churches
and synagogues on the Upper West Side.
