Tonight’s closing concert of our 11th season marks the end of a chapter in the life of the CYC. We say farewell to a beautiful group of graduating seniors, leaders in the choirs who have given heart and soul to our work together. We have been changed by their gifts, and we will be changed without them. Transitions can be a challenge, but the change and growth that comes can be so good. Tonight will be the last time the CYC performs as two ensembles, Kantorei and Allegro. Next year Conspirare will invite a third choir to our family of singers, a group we will call Prelude — to offer instruction to younger musicians in second and third grade. Enchantment: an emotion that very young children carry with them and bit by bit, as they grow, our troubled world strips it away. Many times in the last few months I have thought about the lyrics of tonight’s music and what impact they might have on our young artists. Once learned, music is not forgotten. Our art form is ephemeral in nature but the fleeting moment lingers forever in the memory of the singer. The music of Broadway has entertained and enchanted audiences around the world for decades, and tonight we present to you several decades’ worth of this rich and lovely repertoire. Our selections are all in one way or another connected to themes of enchantment — the innocence, freshness, play, wonder of childhood, love, laughter, expectation and hope. My heart is filled with gratitude for the enormous generosity and love that these singers have brought to our work together. Their professionalism and artistry is always thrilling and inspiring to me. I am honored to be a part of these young lives. My hope is that they will carry this moment with them as they grow, and that this music will bring enchantment to them and to you, tonight and always. It may come cannonballing down thru the sky, gleam in its eye, bright as a rose. Who knows? It’s only just out of reach, down the block, on a beach, under a tree. I got a feeling there’s a miracle due, gonna come true, comin’ to me! Could it be? Yes it could. Something coming, something good, if I can wait. Something coming, I don’t know what it is, but it is gonna be great. With a click, with a shock. Phone will jingle, door will knock. Open the latch. Something’s coming, don’t know when, but it’s soon; catch the moon, one-handed catch. Around the corner, or whistling down the river. Come on, come on, deliver to me. Something’s coming, something’s coming. Will it be? Yes it will. Maybe just by holding still it’ll be there. Come on, something, com on in. Don’t be shy, meet a guy, pull up a chair. The air is humming, and something great is coming. Who knows? It’s only just out of reach, down the block, on a beach. Maybe… Tonight, tonight, it all began tonight, I saw you and the world went away, Tonight, tonight, there’s only you tonight, what you are, what you do, what you say. Today, today, all day I had the feeling a miracle would happen. I know now I was right. For here you are, and what was just a world is a star tonight. Tonight, tonight, the world is full of light, with suns and moons all over the place. Tonight, tonight, the world is wild and bright, going mad, shooting sparks into space. Today, today, the world was just an address, a place for me to live in, no better than all right. But here you are, and what was just a world is a star tonight, tonight, tonight. You Must Love Me Tim Rice Where do we go from here? This isn’t where we intended to be. We had it all, you believed in me, I believed in you. Certainties disappear. What do we do for our dream to survive? How do we keep all our passions alive As we used to do? Deep in my heart I’m concealing Things that I’m longing to say, Scared to confess what I’m feeling, Frightened you’ll slip away. 4 5 But I won’t rest until I know I’ll have it all. So don’t ask where I’m going Just listen when I’m gone; And far away you’ll hear me singing Softly to the dawn. You must love me, You must love me. Why are you at my side? How can I be any use to you now? Give me a chance and I’ll let you see how Nothing has changed. Rivers belong where they can ramble, Eagles belong where they can fly; I’ve got to be where my spirit can run free, Got to find my corner of the sky. Deep in my heart I’m concealing Things that I’m longing to say, Scared to confess what I’m feeling, Frightened you’ll slip away. You must love me, You must love me. Look to the RainbowE.Y. Harburg You must love me. Corner of the Sky Stephen Shwartz Everything has its season Everything has its time Show me a reason and I’ll soon show you a rhyme. Cats fit on the windowsill, Children fit in the snow. Why do I feel I don’t fit in anywhere I go? Rivers belong where they can ramble, Eagles belong where they can fly; I’ve got to be where my spirit can run free, Got to find my corner of the sky. Everyone has his daydreams, Everyone has his goal People like the way dreams have of sticking to the soul. Thunderclouds have their lightning, Nightingales have their song And don’t you see I want my life to be something more than long? Rivers belong where they can ramble, Eagles belong where they can fly; I’ve got to be where my spirit can run free, Got to find my corner of the sky. So many men seem destined To settle for something small, 6 On the day I was born, Said my father, said he, I’ve an elegant legacy Waitin’ for ye, ‘Tis a rhyme for your lips And a song for your heart, To sing it whenever The world falls apart. Look, look, Look to the rainbow, Follow it over the hill and stream. Look, look, Look to the rainbow, Follow the fellow Who follows a dream. ‘Twas a sumptuous gift To bequeath to a child, Oh the lure of that song Kept her feet runnin’ wild. For you never grow old And you never stand still, With whippoorwills singin’ Beyond the next hill. Look, look, Look to the rainbow, Follow it over the hill and stream. Look, look, Look to the rainbow, Follow the fellow Who follows a dream. 7 I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face So I bundled me heart And I roamed the world free, To the East with the lark To the West with the sea; And I searched all the earth And I scanned all the skies, But I found it at last, In my own true love’s eyes. I’ve grown accustomed to her face. She almost makes the day begin. I’ve grown accustomed to the tune, She whistles night and noon, Her smiles, her frowns, her ups and downs, Are second to nature to me now; Like breathing out and breathing in I was serenely independent and content before we met; Surely I could always be that way again and yet, I’ve grown accustomed to her looks; Accustomed to her voice; accustomed to her face. Look, look, Look to the rainbow, Follow it over the hill and stream. Look, look, Look to the rainbow, Follow the fellow Who follows a dream. Follow the fellow, Follow the fellow, Follow the fellow who follows a dream. Impossible Alan Jay Lerner Oscar Hammerstein II Impossible, for a plain yellow pumpkin to become a golden carriage. Impossible, for a plain country bumpkin and a prince to join in marriage, And four grey mice will never be four white horses! Such folderol and fiddledy dee of course, is impossible! But the world is full of zanies and fools Who don’t believe in sensible rules And won’t believe what sensible people say. And because these daft and dewey-eyed dopes keep building up impossible hopes, Impossible things are happening every day. Impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible, impossible! It’s possible, for a plain yellow pumpkin to become a golden carriage. It’s possible, for a plain country bumpkin and a prince to join in marriage, And four grey mice are easily turned to horses! Such folderol and fiddledy dee of course, is quite possible! For the world is full of zanies and fools Who don’t believe in sensible rules And won’t believe what sensible people say. And because these daft and dewey-eyed dopes keep building up impossible hopes, Impossible things are happening every day. It’s possible, it’s possible, it’s possible, it’s possible, it’s possible, it’s possible, it’s possible! 8 I’ve grown accustomed to her face. She almost makes the day begin. I’ve gotten used to her say: “Good morning” every day, Her joys, her woes, her highs, her lows Are second nature to me now; Like breathing out and breathing in I’m very grateful she’s a woman and so easy to forget; Rather like a habit one can always break and yet, I’ve grown accustomed to the trace of something in the air Accustomed to her face. I Could Have Danced All Night Bed! Bed! I couldn’t go to bed, My head’s too light to try to set it down. Sleep! Sleep! I couldn’t sleep tonight, Not for all the jewels in the crown. I could have danced all night! I could have danced all night! And still have begged for more. I could have spread my wings And done a thousand things I’ve never done before. I’ll never know what made it so exciting, Why all at once my heart took flight. I only know when he began to dance with me, I could have danced, danced, danced all night. 9 Alan Jay Lerner I could have danced all night! I could have danced all night! Poor Rapunzel needs a haircut, but the witch won’t set her free. She passes time by singing. Like someone else I know. As years go by, she sits and waits. As years go by? Uh oh... A torturous existence. I don’t remember this part! She wishes she were dead? Skip ahead skip ahead! But in the end Rapunzel finds a millionaire. The prince is good at climbing and braiding golden hair! So I know, he’ll appear ‘cause there are rules and there are strictures. I believe the storybooks I read by candlelight. My white knight, and his steed will look just like these pictures! It won’t be long now, I guarantee. Day number 23. I know its today, I know its today. There’s a princess in a coma. Glad it’s her instead of me. Pretty maiden in a glass box. 10 How I wonder does she pee? Blah blah blah, poison apple Boring, boring evil queen. Filler, filler, been there, read that! Seven shorties on the scene. Skip ahead, skip ahead… But in the end the princess wakes up with a start. The prince is good at kissing and melting Snow White’s heart! So I know, he’ll appear and his armor will be blinding, as shining as his perfect teeth and manly hose. He’ll propose on one knee and our prenup will be binding. About time we set the wedding date. Day number 958. I know it’s today. He’ll show up today. There’s a princess any princess take your pick, they’re all like me. Not exactly, I’m still waiting; they’re out living happily. Ever after better get here I want love in seconds flat. No one needs these middle bits Whoops, did I do that? Cut the villains, cut the vamping, cut this fairytale. Cut the peril and the pitfalls, cut the puppet and the whale. Cut the monsters, cut the curses, keep the intro, cut the verses and the waiting, the waiting, the waiting, the waiting, the waiting! But I know, he’ll appear, though I seem a bit bipolar. And I’m a vandal now as well. Hope he won’t mind. I’m a find. I’m a catch. And a very gifted bowler. 11 ‘Cause the world keeps spinnin’ round and round and my heart’s keepin’ time to the speed of the sound. I was lost ‘til I heard the drums, then I found my way ‘cause you can’t stop the beat! It won’t be long now, I guarantee! Day number… Are you there God? It’s me Fiona… It’s me Fiona! Now I know, he’ll appear, ‘cause there are rules and there are strictures. I believe the storybooks I read by candlelight. My white knight, my knight and his steed will look just like these pictures. It won’t be long now, I guarantee! Day number 23 Day number 958 Day number 8423 I know its today, oooo … I Know it’s today. I know it’s today! You Can’t Stop the Beat Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman You can’t stop an avalanche as it races down the hill. You can try to stop the seasons, girl, but you know you never will. And you can try to stop my dancing feet, but I just cannot stand still. ‘Cause the world keeps spinnin’ round and round and my heart’s keepin’ time to the speed of the sound. I was lost ‘til I heard the drums, then I found my way ‘cause you can’t stop the beat! Ever since this old world began, a woman found out if she shook it, she could shake up a man. And so I’m gonna shake and shimmy it the best that I can today, ‘cause you can’t stop the motion of the ocean or the sun in the sky. You can wonder, if you wanna, but I never ask why. And if you try to hold me down, I’m gonna spit in your eye and say that you can’t stop the beat! You can’t stop today as it comes speeding ‘round the track. Child, yesterday is history and it’s never comin’ back. ‘Cause tomorrow is a brand new day, and it don’t know white from black. 12 Ever since this old world began, a woman found out if she shook it, she could shake up a man. Aah, aah, ever since we first saw the light, a man and woman like to shake it on a Saturday night. And so I’m gonna shake and shimmy it with all of my might today. ‘Cause you can’t stop the motion of the ocean or the rain from above. They can try to stop the paradise we’re dreaming of. But you cannot stop the rhythm of two hearts in love to stay, ‘Cause you can’t stop the beat! You can’t stop the beat! All the Things You Are Oscar Hammerstein II Time and again I’ve longed for adventure, something to make my heart beat the faster. What did I long for? I never really knew. Finding your love, I’ve found my adventure, touching your hand, my heart beats the faster all that I want in all of this world is you. You are the promised breath of springtime that makes the lonely winter seem long. You are the breathless hush of evening that trembles on the brink of a lovely song. You are the angel glow that lights a star. The dearest things I’ve known are what you are, you are. Some day my happy arms will hold you, and some day I’ll know that moment divine when all the things you are, are mine. 13 You are the angel glow that lights a star. The dearest things I know are what you are. Some day my happy arms will hold you and some day I’ll know that moment divine when all the things you are, are mine, when all the things you are, are mine! Dites-Moi Oscar Hammerstein II Dites-moi pourquoi la vie est belle. Tell me why life is beautiful. Dites-moi pourquoi la vie est gai? Tell me why life is gay? Dites-moi pourquoi chère mad’moiselle, Tell me why, dear Miss, estceque parceque gois m’aimes? is it because you love me? Tell me why the sky is filled with music. Tell me why we fly on clouds above? Can it be that we can fly to music, just because, just because, we’re in love? Some Enchanted Evening Oscar Hammerstein II Some enchanted evening you may see a stranger, you may see a stranger across a crowded room. And somehow you know, you know even then that somewhere you’ll see her again and again. when you find your true love, when you feel her call you across a crowded room, then fly to her side and make her your own, or all through your life you may dream all alone. Once you have found her, never let her go. Once you have found her, never let her go! What is this Feeling?Stephen Schwartz What is this feeling, so sudden and new? I felt the moment I laid eyes on you. My pulse is rushing. My head is reeling. My face is flushing. What is this feeling? Fervid as a flame, does it have a name? Yes! Loathing! Unadulterated loathing! For your face, your voice, your clothing! Let’s just say- I loathe it all! Every little trait however small, makes my very flesh begin to crawl with simple utter loathing! There’s a strange exhilaration. In such total detestation. It’s so pure, so strong! Though I do admit, it came on fast, still I do believe that it can last. And I will be loathing, loathing you my whole life long. Some enchanted evening someone may be laughing, you may hear her laughing across a crowded room. And night after night, as strange as it seems the sound of her laughter will sing in your dreams. Defying GravityStephen Schwartz Something has changed within me something is not the same. I’m through with playing by the rules of someone else’s game. Too late for second-guessing, too late to go back to sleep. It’s time to trust my instincts, close my eyes, and leap. It’s time to try Who can explain it? Who can tell you why? Fools give you reasons, wise men never try. Some enchanted evening 14 15 Alto’s LamentMarcy Heisler defying gravity. I think I’ll try defying gravity, and you can’t pull me down. I’ve had much good luck as a performer. I’ve been cast in almost every show. From Carousel to Hair, on Broadway _ I was there, but you’d never never know. Perhaps you picked me out last year in Phantom or underneath my dirt in Miserable. But if you tried to pick me out from all the voices in the crowd, I’m certain that you must have had a problem... My plight is quite familiar to those who tread the boards. At the Nederlander, Schubert, and Rialto. Although I’ve got a great high C The reaction seems to be “Wow. That’s great dear, but we need you singing alto.” I’m through accepting limits ‘cause someone says they’re so. Some things I cannot change, but ‘til I try, I’ll never know. Too long I’ve been afraid of losing love, I guess I’ve lost. Well, if that’s love, it comes at much too high a cost. I’d sooner try defying gravity. Kiss me goodbye; I’m defying gravity, and you can’t pull me down. Unlimited. My future is unlimited. And I’ve just had a vision almost like a prophecy. I know it sounds truly crazy, and true the vision’s hazy. But I swear someday I’ll be up in the sky, defying gravity. Flying so high, defying gravity. They’ll never pull me down. So if you care to find me, look to the western sky. As someone told me lately: everyone deserves a chance to fly! And if I’m flying solo, at least I’m flying free. To those who’d ground me, take a message back from me. Please, give me a chance to sing melody. Give me a crack at the tune. I’m filled with chagrin every time I begin by the light of the silvery moon. Just one little shot at the melody. Give me a moment to shine. I’m sick of can’t help loving that man of mine. Just look at Oklahoma for example. That rousing title number of the show. While everyone is singing Oklahoma I get sky-y-y-y-y-y-y yo ho! The hills are alive with the sound of music. Three little maids from school are we, pert as a school girl well can be, filled to the brim with girlish glee, three little maids from school. Touch me, it’s so easy to leave me! What mirror where? Which? What? Where? Who? Who? Who? Such a pretty me! Such a pretty me! Tell them how I am defying gravity. I’m flying high, defying gravity. And soon I’ll match them in renown. And nobody in all of Oz, no Wizard that there is or was is ever gonna bring me down. Please, pull a few strings for the melody! Don’t care if the solo is teeny. 16 17 It would be Nirvana, from Heaven such manna, to sing something other than sweeny! I’m down on my knees for a melody. I’m begging with all of my might! Just half a bar! And let this chorus girl be a star! Tonight! You’ll Never Walk Alone Oscar Hammerstein II When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high and don’t be afraid of the dark. At the end of the storm is a golden sky, and the sweet silver song of a lark. Walk on through the wind, walk on through the rain, though your dreams be tossed and blown. Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart, and you’ll never walk alone, you’ll never walk alone, alone! Walk on through the wind, walk on through the rain, though your dreams be tossed and blown. Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart, and you’ll never, no you’ll never walk alone. You’ll never walk, you’ll never walk, you’ll never walk! You’ll never walk alone. Walk on, walk on! Children Will ListenStephen Sondheim How do you say to your child in the night, “Nothing’s all black, but then nothing’s all white?” How do you say, “It will all be alright” When you know that it mightn’t be true? What do you do? What do you leave to your child when you’re dead? Only whatever you put in it’s head. Things which your mother and father had said, Which were left to them too. 18 Careful what you say. Careful the things you say, Children will listen, Careful the things you do, Children will see. And learn. Children may not obey, But children will listen. Children will look to you For which way to turn, To learn what to be. Careful before you say, “Listen to me”. Children will listen. Careful the wish you make, Wishes are children. Careful the path they take, Wishes come true, not free. Careful the spell you cast, Not just on children. Sometimes the spell may last, Past what you can see And turn against you. Careful the tale you tell, That is the spell. Children will listen. One Hand, One HeartStephen Sondheim Make of our hands one hand, make of our hearts one heart. Make of our vows one last vow: only death will part us now. Make of our lives one life. day after day, one life. Now it begins, now we start; one hand, one heart. Even death won’t part us now. Make of our hands one hand, make of our hearts one heart. Make of our vows one last vow: only death will part us now. Make of our lives one life, day after day, one life. Now it begins, now we start; one hand, one heart. Even death won’t part us now. 19 CONSPIRARE YOUTH CHOIRS Conspirare Youth Choirs (CYC) were formed in 2005 as an educational outreach program of Conspirare. Under the direction of Founding Artistic Director, Nina Revering, the CYC seeks out and trains young musicians who share a love and commitment for creating music at a high level of excellence. Conspirare Youth Choirs’ two ensembles, Kantorei and Allegro (previously Conspirare Children’s Choir), accommodate young singers’ varying levels of choral skill and experience. Both provide a combination of rigorous vocal training, music theory, and sight-singing instruction in a nurturing environment that allows the young singer to explore the depth and beauty of choral music. The CYC have performed throughout the Austin community for high profile events and organizations including the Round Rock Express, Greenlights Nonprofit Summit, St. John’s College Choir of Cambridge, Austin Lyric Opera, Austin Symphony, Austin Museum of Art, Austin Children’s Shelter, Abraham Walk, and Austin City Limits. They have also performed nationally in Hawaii and Washington D.C and internationally in the Province of Québec. One of their most notable accomplishments to date is receiving an invitation to perform at the American Choral Directors Association Southwestern Division Performance in Little Rock, Arkansas in March 2014. 20 Nina Revering, Artistic Director Austin Haller, Allegro Accompanist Maimy Fong, Kantorei Accompanist Christina Tannert, CYC Assistant KANTOREI Sanjana Alamela Madeleine Andrien Paige Bencken Sapna Bhatt Arden Bostwick Jessica Cohen Sarah Collins Aryana Dubey Eliza Fleming Anna Fulton Darby Garvis Evelyn Griffin Paxton Gunn Sam Hallam Kathryn Hallam Evangeline Horton Audrey Huber Sejal Jain Chloe Jones Addie Knight Noah Linkin Michelle Lu Jessie Lucas Emma Mattie Louisa McDaniel Taylor McElhaney Keely McNab Emanuele Olivieri Raquel Ordaz Katelyn Perez Portia Preston-Shaeffer Julia Quilici Katarina Reagan James Rutherford Mythili Shirhatti Luca Snowhorn MeiYin Steadman Madeleine Stokes Lucy Sugawa Nicole Swartz Iliana Tangarova Maria Tobias Tennyson Tole Brazos Toles Sky Toles Sarah Traphagan Anna Van Hoorn Estella Zhao ALLEGRO Lucy Abramowitz Grace Aggen Tara Ahuja Urvi Alamela Elena Alcala Chiara Alvisi Amelia Azadi Martha Beaty Ashlyn Bishop Lauren Crocker Lauren Datres Avery Davis Miles Dintzner Elizabeth Driggers Claire Dugan Ainsley Gamble Ellen Gernert Isabella Grossling Olivia Hansen Sarah Helmbrecht Sofia Hsu Eva Legge Juliana Marshall Hannah McChesney Sesha McMinn 21 Caleb Melville Jonathon Miller James Mixson Isabel Moring Emily Mulva Raiya Myren Elena Olivieri Jacob Ordaz Raina Parsons Ella Pettichord Lucy Pickens Aurelia Preston-Schaeffer Asha Rao Libby Rayos Rachel Rowe Aditya Sankaran Lavanya Sankaran Shilpa Saxena Molly Snodgrass Sierra South Sidharth Srinivasan Anne Marie Stapper Abigail Stewart Abigail Storm Claire Sullivan Natalie Terrell Maria Tangarova Christy Vineis Gracie Vogel Anastasia Weger Lily Wendt Aniston White Sydney White Sarah Whorton Alyssa Wixson Aniston Zabawa Angela Zhang CYC STAFF N I N A R E V E R I N G , Founding Artistic Director Nina Revering’s choral music experience began at an early age with chorister experience in the Coro Infantil do Teatro Municipal of Brazil under the direction of Elsa Lakschevitz and the Toronto Children’s Chorus, directed by Jean Ashworth-Bartle.
