It’s been a tough few months on the weather front and as a farmer we are severely suffering, water shortages are starting to become a big major and the heat is making it impossible. On the other hand it is good for our club activities. Firstly I would like to welcome our new club members, Lee Mahoney and Kaylene Oswald with their 1965 GT Mustang, Carl Brennan and his son Carmen with their 1969 Mach 1 390 S Code, Gary and Rebecca Brandon with their 1969 Mustang Notchback. It’s already been a busy few months with Club events and Cafe runs which are passing furiously by, I know it is a very busy time of year for everyone at the moment with work started up again and getting back into the groove, but it would be great to see the attendance numbers go up, so come on everyone lets make more of an effort. The next Club Run coming up will be in April and that is the Anzac Run which we have been invited to join the Auckland and Bay of Plenty Club on the 20th-21st and will finish up at Okoriore, it would be great to have team members participating in this for the tri-club games. Our Waikato Mustang Convention is not to far away now its coming up very quickly in October and there are still a lot of things to organise before then. The committee are working hard around the clock and need all the help they can get, so if anyone can offer assistance or help in any of the areas listed on pages 7 and 8 it would be much appreciated. The committee have finalized the logo for the convention now and the registrations will be following shortly. The website will be updated very soon by Bob with further details of what’s to come shortly, go to www.nzmustang.co.nz. Our logo for the Waikato Mustang Convention, this is a round 5 spoke tyre logo, 70cm in diameter, this has been put on a black background to show what it will look like on our shirts. I hope you all have had a great start to the New Year . Cheers Stu 4 From the Editor Hi Everyone It has been another busy few months, I hope everyone has had a great New Years and is refreshed for a new start. We have already started this year with two Cafe runs which were a great success and we have had a few events in between from Whangamata to Kumeu to say the least. I have had a great response from members on stories and pictures as well some private excursions that they have done so keep up the good work, it is much appreciated. I am always interested to hear about whatever you have to say whether it’s small or big, so keep it coming. I myself have met a very interesting person lately with a great story to tell so couldn’t resist getting a story off them, which you will see coming up. The Waikato Mustang Convention is coming along very nicely and our committee is doing a fantastic job of organising this. If everyone is not aware, the date is set for Labour Weekend 25th-28th October 2013, at the Kingsgate Hotel. We are suggesting to get in quick as rooms are going quickly and to book in the 300 section. Rooms are $119 including breakfast. 100 Garnett Avenue, Te Rapa, Hamilton, Phone: 07 849 0860, Email: [email protected] The Claudelands showground is all booked and plans are being drawn up for this at the moment by Jim, with the help of John organising how we are going to fit the cars inside. I have attached some photos on the next page of inside and outside, as some people may not have made it on our trip over to our annual general meeting to look at this. All and all, there is still a lot to organise and we are still looking out for volunteers so don’t hold back. If you can help in anyway just let Bob know. On a last note, would just like to wish Stu a belated 50th birthday that he had in late December and also Jim Leadbeater a Happy 65th Birthday - as you can see from the photo, we had a drink and a beautiful cake that Irena brought along to celebrate. It was Jim’s birthday on our last committee meeting in February. Hope to catch up soon with everyone. Your Editor JO :) 5 Claudeland’s Event Centre above Claudeland’s Arena to your left Claudeland’s ground overview Now the Arena is going to be a lot larger than this, as the seating that you can see on the ground level is going to be pushed back out of the way which is going to give us a lot of floor space to work with. 6 Horsepower 2013 Tasks and Team Leaders Task Leaders Team Co -Convenors John Overend Ronnie Phillips All of below, Master Time Line/ Itinerary, Guest Speaker Colin Bates Sponsorship Margaret Mold Mike Mahoney Gold, Silver, Bronze, Individual sponsor, Club Member sponsoring Glen Rogers Apply for Grants, vouchers for convention packs Malcolm Sankey Consider hosts for every event each day. AN IMPRESSIVE LINEUP FROM OUR CLUB IN SOUTHWARD THE THEME ON THE PRIZEGIVING NIGHT WAS (W) 9 A Rare Sight To See, Back From The Grave I recently had the pleasure of meeting Greg Ryan the owner of a 65 Mustang fastback that he is currently getting restored, but this isn’t just any average car. When I heard that it had been buried underneath the ground for nearly 40 years over in the US and found out that it was sitting on a trailer out the back of our shop, I was outta here. I was delighted that he had brought it along for us to have a look at, and I was very curious to see how it had weathered all those years beneath the ground. I was very much surprised, as it had feared not to badly and I couldn’t help but take a couple of photos. When I asked Greg if I could have the story on how he came across his Mustang Fastback he said he would send it to me and true to his word, I have attached it on the next two pages. Greg said it was going to the dippers next and said that he will keep us updated, so watch this spot!! 10 Notice how the owner had turned the Ford letters upside down! Under the hood shows some surface rust on the top surfaces, but the 289 is unmolested and all original. 11 The dented roof will be replaced as part of the restoration. The interior is all original and in need of restoration. Notice it’s a 4-speed car. The upper surfaces have surface rust but it’s in remarkably good condition. 12 Mustang Club Member With Hidden Talents! When I had my last little spiel about needing more stories and photos, Troy said to jump on his site and have a look at some of his photos of the USA Day over in Tauranga he took. If I had of known earlier I would have included these in the last magazine but still who would of known we all have our own little talents A! This is Troy’s car in the first picture, if I had of known Troy I would have been on your case earlier as well, lol. 13 World’s First Car & Bike Show at the Whangamata Club on New Year’s Day 2013 With our first New Years day free for 26 years, Jim and I decided to got to Whangamata for a car show we had heard was on, it was being held between 8-10am. In the 68 Shelby we arrived at the cossie club by 9.15am and found the carpark already full, apparently there was around 200 vehicles on display including 24 bikes inside the Club, so we were sent along the RSA carpark where others were assembling. Parked up, we checked the car was still clean and then went to find other club members who were there. Some fabulous cars were seen by the large crowd on what a fabulously sunny day. Prizegiving was mid-afternoon in the clubrooms, so we went in out of the heat, and were thrilled to receive the prize for “Best Street Machine”. A great start to what will be a busy year Irena & Jim Leadbeater 14 Wedding bells and ponies A request came in to Secretary Bob late last year, for three cars for an upcoming wedding in the Hamilton Gardens. The request caused consternation to his ‘Fastback’ ears as they wanted Notchbacks ……….. Professionalism to the fore, however, he soon had the cars lined-up - me, (turquoise ’67 - bride and her father), Bryce Edmonds, (red ’66 – two bridesmaids) and Mark Studer, (blue ’66 – groom and two groomsmen). Ribboned cars weren’t a prerequisite but Mark, (who has done quite a few weddings), turned up with his car looking very ‘in the part’ so I’ll be going out and making my own for future weddings! As a new member of the Club this was my first wedding, so I dutifully spent around two hours the day before the wedding cleaning and polishing SUZPNY, including a deep and meaningful chat to behave herself on the day! (Before her total makeover she was ‘failing to function’ when you least expected it). My new responsibilities also saw me an hour ahead of time, so lots of time to drive around and recheck the route from Dinsdale to the Hamilton Gardens where the ceremony would take place. A more seasoned wedding driver, Bryce duly arrived from Te Aroha, and, (after pushing our seats as far forward as they’d go), we poured the various members of the bridal party into the backseats of our cars. The bride Nichol looked absolutely stunning and was one of the most relaxed, chilled out brides I’ve seen in a long time. I could tell Nichol loved the attention from onlookers as we proudly followed Bryce and the bridesmaids over to the Gardens. Mark, of course, was already there having deposited the groom and his groomsmen. We parked the cars up and got some photographs for our own records, and the Club, and then had some official shots with the bridal party, after the ceremony. All in all a fabulous day - the Mustangs behaved themselves, as did the drivers most of the time! Sue Brown Here's a shot of the three Mustangs with the bridal party at the wedding at Hamilton 15 16 Recipe For Success When you add fine weather, open roads, great Mustangs and people to a great venue with good food and coffee you’ve got a recipe for success. And so it was for the first WMOG Café Run for 2013. Sue Brown and I have only been members of the Club for a very short while, but long enough to realise there are potentially two groups of members - those who are petrol-heads and for whom there is no happier place than a car show, and then there are, (literally), the no-shows – and we went to President Stu, Secretary Bob and Run Organiser Bryce asking if we could facilitate another type of 'run' which would draw in more of the 'social' members. The concept was The Cafe Run - impromptu runs heralded by the prospect of great weather, with an email to all members, who elected to be part of a specific email group, inviting them to come on a run to one of the great cafes in the greater Waikato region, (ideally around 1 to 1.5 hours from Hamilton). The invitation went out in early January and got a great response and so, a few days later with the prospect of a sunny weekend with no car events, the first run was planned – to Rhubarb Café in Arapuni. The ‘beauty’ of these runs is that an email goes out to members with a start time and place – there is no need to register – and so it was with trepidation that Sue and I arrived at Cambridge 30 minutes ahead of the departure time. Concern that we might have been the only cars soon disappeared as one, then other cars arrived. En route to Arapuni we ‘picked up’ the Matamata and Tauranga cars – a total of 12 Mustangs, one Thunderbird and one Big Dog bike bringing up the rear. The road, via Horahora, is a great drive almost devoid of traffic and the line of cars looked good whatever your perspective – looking back in the rear-view mirror, or ahead. In all, around 22 people descended on Rhubarb Café whose large covered outdoor area accommodated the crowd and there was a steady flow of food, coffee and conversation. Most stayed into the afternoon enjoying the opportunity to get to know other members better, and have a good look at the cars. The next run is planned for a fine weekend in February, so if you’d like your name added to the Café Run email list, contact me – Clare Bayly [email protected]. 17 18 Kumeu After a busy week away in Taranaki golfing, (which I got a birdie at Kaitaki golfcourse!!!! so proud of that!!!!!), we decided to head to the big carshow at Kumeu. We managed to drag ourselves out of bed at 5.30am Friday morning and head to the big smoke, we hit Auckland at rush hour traffic and crawled along the motorway for about 30 minutes then thank god we turned off and had some fun cruising time. When we hit the Kumeu showground's there was hardly anyone there which was fantastic cause we got to park up our convoy in the best spot ever!!! After setting everything up by pressing a couple of buttons we were of shopping in Kumeu...... I found out quite quickly that there’s not much shopping to be done there!!!! Oh well was a tad bit excited about all the stalls that were setting up in the showground's, so bring on Saturday!!!! We settled in for the afternoon with a couple of drinks and yummy snacks, it was a tad bit chilly that night, I thought it could have blimmin snowed!!! Auckland weather for you I say!! Barry arrived that night with his bright orange Ford truck and a bloody nice muzzy in his trailer, took him a while to get to Kumeu but better late then never a Barry:) . Saturday morning was an early start it about 7.30am I stepped outside to check out the weather and OMG I’ve never seen such a lineup of hot cars and trucks waiting to get into the showground's. We cooked breaky and watched the cars drive past us, it was awesome! The day went really fast, there was so much to see. The stalls were pretty cool, there was everything, except USA chairs and USA umbrellas!!! Quite disappointed about that!!!!. Stu arrived rather late Saturday afternoon in his Buick. We left him to have a look around as we had pretty much seen everything. We ended the day of with a yummy bbq and a few drinks while watching this cool as big music screen which rocked till the early hours:) Sunday was a bit drizzly so we decided to head home...I was keen to get on the road to beat the traffic. All in all it was a fantastic weekend!!!! AND the BEST thing about it was........WE DIDNT BREAK DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nicky and Jan Telford 19 20 BARRY’S 1969 BOSS 429, THAT HASN’T SEEN THE LIGHT OF DAY FOR A WHILE 1965 FASTBACK FOR SALE 21 Denny Hulme Memorial Race Meeting, Hamptons th th 18 – 20 January For those amongst us who cherish motor sport this was a not to be missed weekend. The organisers had sourced ex Denny Hulme road and race cars from around the globe including his Formula 1 world championship winning McLaren M23 (1973) and 5 McLaren/Hulme Can-Am cars, two of which Hulme has driven to Can-Am Championships. Add to this full fields of Formula 5000 (32 cars) Group A and Historic Touring cars, HMC/Pre78 Saloons, pre 85 open salons, Formula Junior and F3 cars, Historic Formula Fords, BMW Open etc etc, it was an amazing weekend. After the now regulation cooked breakfast at the “Hastie Cafe & Bar” in Huntly, Bob, myself, Bryce Edmond’s and 2 special guests, Murray Sterling, (now Taranaki) and Dave Green (Specialty Cars, Matamata) met up with Craig and Christine Leith who had their new toy out for a spin, (the ex Fraser McKenzie 69 Mach 1). Fellow club member Bruce Dreadon was racing his immaculate 64 Mustang against the Historic Muscle cars and although totally out-gunned by their different regulations, had a ball and represented us proudly. Too many highlights to report here, but as commented on by the many overseas entrants, this was one of the best historic events held anywhere in the world. Naturally the weekend was capped off back at the “Hastie Cafe & Bar” with several cold ones served by the sultry maid Deidre. PS Muzz has not lost his wicked sense of humour. Colin Reed 22 DENNY HULME BIO Denis Clive "Denny" Hulme OBE, (18 June 19364 October 1992), was a New Zealand car racer, the 1967 Formula One World Champion for the Brabham team. Hulme later went on to race for McLaren in Formula One, the Canadian-American Challenge Cup series, (for Group 7 sports cars), and at Indianapolis. He was CanAm champion in 1968, (driving the McLaren M8A), and 1970 (driving the McLaren M8D "Batmobile"). He drove the McLaren M8F in 1971; teammate Peter Revson won the CanAm championship that year. Hulme and Revson drove the McLaren M20 in the 1972 CanAm races, but the M20 was overpowered by Roger Penske's Porsche 917s, (driven by Mark Donohue and George Follmer). Hulme retired from Formula One at the end of the 1974 season but continued to race Australian Touring Cars. Hulme's untimely death, caused by a heart attack whilst driving a BMW M3 during the Bathurst 1000, made him the first former Formula One champion to die of natural causes. 23 Taupo IRC Meeting Taupo Raceway 26th-29th January Lucky me attending, but another V8 orientated race meeting the following weekend. The meeting also included the 3rd round of the International Toyota Racing Series, but truly, the huge crowd had come to watch and support the Central Muscle Cars And the Pre-65 Saloons. This became embarrassingly apparent as the Corporate Boxes and stands were full for the Saloon Car Racing and all but deserted for the single seaters. In the scratch races for the Pre-65s, it was Mustang, one - two – three, the same results basically for Sunday’s Handicap Races. In Central Muscle Cars, Bruce Honor in his big block 69 Mustang proved this car to beat, heading both Shane Wigston, (HQ), and Aussie Paul Stubber, (Camaro), for the weekend spoils. On the Sunday, we all left the circuit for 1 ½ hours to watch the Off-Shore boats battle it out on Lake Taupo, a race that was won on the last corner by Fairview Windows. At about 7.30, (after a few cold ones with the Central Muscle Car blokes), I’ll admit to be nearly V8ed out, (nearly)! Roll on the “big” V8 Hydroplanes at Karapiro next weekend. Club Circuit:1.3 km National Circuit: 2.3 km International Circuit: 3.32 km Direction: Anti-clockwise only Surface: Asphaltic concrete Pre 65’s Mustang racing in round 4 Colin Reed 24 Motorama, Morrinsville February 10th 2013 Another great summer day dawned with Waikato members congregating at the “Top Pub” in Morrinsville at 8.00am to support Yankee Haulers day in the park. Approximately 8 or 9 cars left the pub together and once inside the grounds parked up and put up the club banners along with the club sun shelter. In all about a dozen club members made the show which was a good turnout. We even had a couple of “Henrys” earlier models belonging to our members join in. Everyone dispersed around a very good selection of Swappers which included some of our members with stalls. Stoney would just about take the prize for the most gear that could be squeezed in a courier van as transport to his stall. He told me his dog was on his knee and he had to move a carton to change gear! There was the usual array of bits and pieces, parts, clothing etc and generally something for all. As in previous years the kids got to ride on a fire engine, play on the Bouncy Castle and even take in some Motor Mower racing. Mum and Dad were well catered for with plenty of parking, food stalls and gazing at the real stars-The Cars! There was something for everyone from cars, trucks, and even a tractor with a V12 Lincoln Zephyr motor that ran very sweetly. All in all another very good day in the summer sun run by an extremely well organised group. Kathryn & Bryce Edmonds 25 26 Paeroa Swap Meet 16th February It was a slightly cooler morning and I had got up about 6am in the morning and made a packed lunch and got all my essentials together before I headed round to Colin and Barb’s place. Irena and Jim came out to meet me round 8am and we all headed off. We were not to sure how many of us club members were coming as we had not heard, but were hoping for a great turnout. We had a nice trip on the way to Paeroa and NO road works which was even better. We were able to get a nice place right under the shade of the trees and in a position where we could drive out if we wanted to. We set up camp and Irena and I went and got coffees. It took a little while for it to fill up, so we all just sat down for a while and enjoyed the scenery. We then decided to have a look at the swappers, which took a while, it’s amazing what little wonders you come across in someone’s little pile of treasures. Saw Stoney and his stand and he certainly had a huge display. I can understand now why people are so amazed at how he manages to fit it all in his van. After a good look around we then decided it was time to feed our bellies and treat ourselves with a glass of wine, it's hard work looking around, I tell you, lol! There weren’t as many attractions this year. They still had the motorised couch and some dirt rack cars going around the paddock but I think they were more of a hindrance than anything else. I would estimate there was between 200-300 cars once it had finally filled up and there was also a lot of motorbikes as well. Barry Featherstone had turned up with his 1969 Shelby Convertible, which was a nice surprise as I had not caught up with him for a while, so we all got talking. As I am a stock car fan, this is what our conversation turned to. A birdie had told me that he had returned to racing his Saloon again and I was concerned so I had to ask. So I gave my motherly speech about being careful. 27 The motorised couch, I went on this last year with Nicky and Lucas, this was really awesome, I don’t think they were doing the paddock runs with it this year. I think they were just randomly cruising round the place. Tom Sharplin was playing as the entertainment and he was fantastic, later on the rock and rollers came out and started to do their thing, Irena and I went up and got his card in case of future occasions, he might come in handy. This is Paeroa-based Richards Team Motorsport new Toyota Camry race car which has just been brought and was trailered in, when we saw it pull up we were all waiting in anticipation to see what was going to pop out, as it was a pretty flash trailer. The boys at work always joked about me joining an Altezza Club, what do you think, should I buy a Altezza race car instead? 28 Kiwi A Salt - World Record Holder 158151 mph, best speed 165609 mph The official racing description for the car is XF/BFRMR • XF stands for vintage Ford flathead engine • B stands for blown (super charged) • F stands for Fuel, which can be anything including petrol, nitro or nitrous but we run Methanol only. • RMR stands for Rear Engine Modified Roadster I actually ran into these gentleman a couple of years ago at Kumeu and they were raising money at the time to go overseas to go racing, Kiwi A Salt’s name originated from racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats in the US, and Stu you would be familiar with this as you have only just been here recently. So after another look around at the cars and listening to the prize giving, we all packed up round 3.30pm and decided to make tracks. It turned out to be a really pleasant day, but only two club cars turned up on the day, so not a great turnout. Betty Boop, I have always loved this, and who can resist Betty Boop. JO O’Reilly 29 Kaimai Cafe Run February cafe run February and March have to be two of the busiest months on the car calendar, events and runs most weekends combining with stunning weather. There was one Sunday during February which didn't clash with other local car events so a cafe run was held to the Kaimai Cheese Factory Cafe in Waharoa, north of Matamata. The route over circumnavigated road works taking in some great less-travelled roads through Scotsman Valley. In all seven Mustangs and 14 people. The coffee, food and location was fantastic - a swelteringly hot day but our table was under the veranda so we were in the shade with our cars in full sight. This is only the second run I've been privileged to organise and it was great to meet some new members, hear their stories and see their cars. It's sometimes said, (mainly in hot rod circles), that Mustangs are 'container cars' inferring they're 'all the same' - but the reality is they are all quite different, each car personalised to its owner. Each time we get together it's a great opportunity to compare what some have done, with what you've got on your own car - as these photographs show; some of us taking the opportunity to check out the fan/cooling set-up on our cars as we prepare for Beachhop and the interminable delays which occur. We won't hold a cafe run in March, because it is so chock-full of events, but watch out for the April run which will have something a little extra ...... If you aren't on the email list for cafe runs, flick me a line [email protected]. 30 31 Jim’s Day Out At Hampton Downs Due to the development of our Gull Service Station in Matamata, I got to know one of the contractors very well, Brian McGovern, he supplied us the new fuel tanks and forecourt work. During the job we talked about cars as guys do and I told him we were a member of the Waikato Mustang Club, and we owned a 68 Notchback. I asked him if he would he like to go for a ride, of course he said yes. So the next day I fired up the 68, in he jumped and I drove out to Turanga-O-Moana and Brian drove back, he thought the car was great and went well. Then Brian told me he owned a 944 Turbo GT Porsche and he raced it on the N.Z circuit and is holding 2nd place overall this season. “Would I like to go a few rounds with him in the Porsche at Hampton Downs in February” he asked, (I’d be a fool to turn that down wouldn’t I). He organised it for me on 2nd February this year, Irena and I drove to Hampton Down’s and watched the race meeting from the pits with Brian, he had two races, running 3rd and 4th, he was happy with that, car went well. After the meeting it was my turn, he fitted me out with overalls and helmet and gave me a run down about the car safety and strapped me in the seat. I wasn’t scared or nervous, I just said to myself relax and enjoy it. I fired up the Porsche and off we went, Brian drove hard, foot to the floor, hard into the corners and fast out of them. I kept one eye on the speedometer and we got up to 200-220 km an hour up the hill on the front straight, then braking hard down the hill going into the right hand corner. After 5 exhilarating laps Brian pulled off the circuit and into the pits, I got out of the car with a big smile on my face and shook Brian’s hand. Thanks mate, I loved it, I’ll do it again Jim Leadbeater 32 33 Pineapple Snow Another favourite of mine, that is so easy to make when you want a quick summer treat that can feed a crowd. INGREDIENTS 1 Tin Crushed Pineapple 1 Packet of Tropical Jelly 1 Bottle of 250ml Cream DIRECTIONS First of all you need to set you jelly, once your jelly is set then you beat it slightly with a hand beater. Beat your cream until it is whipped. Drain the juice out of your pineapple. You do not use the juice for anything so you can discard this or use it for something else. Once you have done all this, then you can carefully mix all your ingredients together and then put it in the fridge to set for an hour. This is real yummy, my mum has been making it for years and now I make it and take it from me the kids love it as well. 34 Funny Stuff ! BEST LAWYER / INSURANCE STORY OF THE YEAR, DECADE, AND POSSIBLY THE CENTURY This took place in Charlotte North Carolina. A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against, among other things, fire. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars, the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost 'in a series of small fires.' The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued and WON! (Stay with me.) Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company, in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be unacceptable 'fire' and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the cigars that perished in the 'fires'. NOW FOR THE BEST PART... After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!!
