There is an important, but typically untold, story about the broader role that energy plays in the economic, social and environmental fabric of Canada. As a result, we believe that there is an incomplete and distorted understanding of energy’s multi-dimensional role, often leading to ill-informed dialogue around energy issues. FULFILLING OUR MISSION To forge a better understanding of energy issues in order to optimally shape the energy sector for the benefit of all Canadians To address this situation, the Energy Council’s 2015 Summit is oriented to the theme of Telling the Energy Story. Program Highlights Sessions have been crafted to cover the energy waterfront: the external influences on Canada’s energy sector; national and regional energy economics; infrastructure issues for both electricity and oil and gas; opportunities for aboriginal partnerships; innovation in energy technology and energy policy; energy’s role in financial markets; and, how to tell the energy story more effectively. The closing luncheon speech by Andrew Coyne will provide observations and insights from a prominent media figure. Each of the eight sessions consists of: the facts on each aspect; identification of issues needing attention; and, dialogue to identify potential solution pathways. Learning, Meeting Energy Leaders, Engaging The Energy Council’s events are designed to provide significant value to all attendees and the 2015 Canadian Energy Summit is no exception. Enriching the energy dialogue with information and insights about energy issues in Canada. These sessions will be particularly relevant in a federal election year. You will hear from senior executives representing companies which are members of the Energy Council of Canada sharing their thoughts on electricity, oil and gas from their corporate vantage points across Canada. The Honourable Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce will moderate the Energy Leaders’ Panel. He plans to engage the industry executives ‘’an energy conversation’’, drawing out key aspects of their part of the energy story in Canada. SESSION CHAIR The Honourable Perrin Beatty, President and CEO, Canadian Chamber of Commerce PANELLISTS Rob Bennett, Chief Operating Officer, Eastern Canada, Emera Inc. Gilbert Bennett, Vice President, Nalcor Energy - Lower Churchill Project Guy Bruce, Vice-President, Resource Planning, SaskPower Eric Axford, Executive Vice President, Business Services, Suncor Energy 02:00 pm – 03:30 pm PARALLEL SESSIONS A | ELECTRICITY INFRASTRUCTURE – HOW ELECTRICITY DELIVERS VALUE FOR MONEY NOW AND IN THE FUTURE Room 200 A Electricity powers our homes, offices, factories, institutions, and economy. Yet we rarely consider the complex infrastructure underpinning the electricity system. Most Canadians know that electricity is an indispensable necessity and the life blood of modern society. However, we tend to take it all for granted. We need to pay closer attention, and we need to do so now. We must shift the conversation to the value of electricity. Much of Canada’s electricity infrastructure is near the end of its life cycle and must be renewed, replaced, and modernized, requiring a $350 billion investment over the next 20 years. The CEA holds the view that a lack of understanding of the value of electricity by Canadians in general is a significant obstacle to depoliticizing power policy, to lowering political risk, and to mustering the political will to implement infrastructure modernization. The goal of the Summit’s concurrent session on electricity is to examine how a better understanding of the value of electricity can be achieved. Sergio Marchi, President and CEO, Canadian Electricity Association, will chair this session and set the stage for the panelists to follow. Session panelists will demonstrate how the industry has carefully crafted and implemented coordinated initiatives and tailored of outreach within individual jurisdictions. SESSION CHAIR The Honourable Sergio Marchi, President and CEO, Canadian Electricity Association PANELLISTS Daffyd Roderick, Director, Corporate Communications, Hydro One Scott Powell, Manager, Public Affairs, Manitoba Hydro Scott Schreiner, Director, External Engagement, AltaLink 7 02:00 pm – 03:30 pm B | ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE: OIL AND GAS Room 200 C A chapter of the energy story that is typically overlooked involves the often invisible role played by oil and gas infrastructure. This session will tell the story starting with profiling the invisible, safe, reliable and cost-effective role played by energy infrastructure and then presenting exciting, leading-edge developments in new and re-purposed energy infrastructure across Canada. The Session Chair will be Mr. Tim McMillan, President and CEO of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers. He will set the stage by describing the essential role played by energy infrastructure and its role in ensuring access to traditional and new markets at home and abroad for Canada’s energy commodities. Panelists will then address emerging infrastructure developments across Canada. SESSION CHAIR Tim McMillan, President and CEO, Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers PANELISTS J.B. The need for capital in Canada’s energy sector has never been greater. All aspects of the energy chain from resource development, processing facilities and transportation through to end-users have significant capital requirements. In addition significant projects are planned to refurbish many existing components in this chain that are reaching the end of their useful economic life. Projects generally get done in one of two ways, “on balance sheet” and independently of their proponent’s balance sheet, or “project financed”. This panel will examine the different pools of capital (equity, bank finance, export credit agencies, bonds) that are potentially available and the characteristics of the projects that are important to ensure that capital is attracted. The panel will provide an overview to help ensure that proponents and ultimate end-users get projects developed with the lowest possible cost of capital consistent with the risk of the project. 10 2015 Canadian Energy SUMMIT Join the conversation #energystory SESSION CHAIR David Hay, Former Managing Director and Vice Chair, CIBC World Markets Inc.
