2015 Canadian Energy SUMMIT
Telling the Energy Story
The Energy Council’s 2015 Canadian Energy Summit aims to address an
important energy issue. There is an important, but typically untold, story about the broader role that energy plays in the economic, social and
environmental fabric of Canada. As a result, we believe that there is an
incomplete and distorted understanding of energy’s multi-dimensional
role, often leading to ill-informed dialogue around energy issues.
FULFILLING
OUR MISSION
To forge a better
understanding of
energy issues in order
to optimally shape the
energy sector for the
benefit of all Canadians
To address this situation, the Energy Council’s 2015 Summit is oriented to
the theme of Telling the Energy Story.
Program Highlights
Sessions have been crafted to cover the energy waterfront: the external influences on Canada’s energy sector;
national and regional energy economics; infrastructure issues for both electricity and oil and gas; opportunities
for aboriginal partnerships; innovation in energy technology and energy policy; energy’s role in financial markets;
and, how to tell the energy story more effectively. The closing luncheon speech by Andrew Coyne will provide
observations and insights from a prominent media figure.
Each of the eight sessions consists of: the facts on each aspect; identification of issues needing attention; and,
dialogue to identify potential solution pathways.
Learning, Meeting Energy Leaders, Engaging
The Energy Council’s events are designed to provide significant value to all attendees and the 2015 Canadian Energy Summit is no exception.
Enriching the energy dialogue with information and insights about energy issues in Canada. These sessions
will be particularly relevant in a federal election year. The remarks by Mr. Andrew Coyne, a nationally-respected
media personality, will shine light on energy’s prominent role in national political affairs. The information conveyed in each of the eight focus sessions will be of significant value to each attendee.
Getting better acquainted with Canada’s energy leaders. The Energy Council carefully selects session chairs
and speakers based on their knowledge, national stature, and leadership in their segment of the Canadian energy
sector. The roster of speakers and session chairs for the 2015 Summit will put a carefully selected collection of
people in front of the attendees.

KEY EXTERNAL INFLUENCES ON CANADA’S ENERGY SECTOR
The ‘’opening chapter’’ in Telling the Energy Story at the Energy Council’s 2015 Canadian
Energy Summit is the session on Key External Influences on Canada’s Energy Sector.
Although energy plays a prominent role in Canada’s economics, regional opportunities,
social development and environmental matters, the Canadian energy sector is a
relatively small player in the global energy scene. In fact, our energy sector is highly
influenced by what goes on across the globe in the highly complex world of energy.
For instance, we are highly subject to global swings in supply and demand, to global
technology developments such as the smart grid, cheaper solar cells, and enhanced
battery storage capabilities, and to global negotiations toward policies to address
environmental issues.
David McFadden will set the stage with observations on the external factors which impact
on energy in Canada. Four excellent panelists will discuss climate policy, global trends in
commodity prices, emerging technologies and global developments in LNG trade.

ENERGY IN CANADA’S ECONOMY: FACTS, FIGURES, AND VIEWPOINTS ON
ENERGY’S VITAL ROLE IN THE ECONOMIES OF CANADA AND ITS PROVINCES
As a nation, Canada’s economy has benefitted greatly from the development of its
natural resources as a fundamental driver of growth and prosperity.
This session will delve into the economics of energy in Canada through the insights of
four Canadian economists who will share their informed perspectives.
The ‘big picture’’ on energy economics in Canada will be presented by Dr. Nancy Olewiler,
Professor, School of Public Policy, Simon Fraser University. Dr. Olewiler will open the
session with an overview of the importance of energy to the Canadian economy and
the challenges we currently face as a small open economy rich in energy resources and
tied to international markets.
Production of energy resources and the delivery of energy to domestic and international

INTRODUCTION TO THE CANADIAN COUNCIL ON RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY
The Canadian Council on Renewable Electricity (CanCORE) has been formed to engage
with Canadians on the opportunities to expand renewable electricity production and
to outline the benefits such expansion offers our communities, economy, and nation.
Four of Canada’s leading national renewable electricity associations have joined forces
as the founding members of the new Council: the Canadian Hydropower Association
(CHA), the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA), the Canadian Wind Energy
Association (CanWEA), and Marine Renewables Canada. The Council will work to build
public support for increased development of our abundant renewable electricity
resources.
Rob Hornung, President and CEO, Canadian Wind Energy Association, will introduce

PARALLEL SESSIONS
A | ELECTRICITY INFRASTRUCTURE – HOW ELECTRICITY DELIVERS VALUE FOR
MONEY NOW AND IN THE FUTURE
Room 200 A
Electricity powers our homes, offices, factories, institutions, and economy. Yet we
rarely consider the complex infrastructure underpinning the electricity system. Most
Canadians know that electricity is an indispensable necessity and the life blood of
modern society. However, we tend to take it all for granted. We need to pay closer
attention, and we need to do so now.
We must shift the conversation to the value of electricity. Much of Canada’s electricity
infrastructure is near the end of its life cycle and must be renewed, replaced, and
modernized, requiring a $350 billion investment over the next 20 years. The CEA holds
the view that a lack of understanding of the value of electricity by Canadians in general
is a significant obstacle to depoliticizing power policy, to lowering political risk, and to
mustering the political will to implement infrastructure modernization.
The goal of the Summit’s concurrent session on electricity is to examine how a better
understanding of the value of electricity can be achieved.
Sergio Marchi, President and CEO, Canadian Electricity Association, will chair this session
and set the stage for the panelists to follow. Session panelists will demonstrate how the
industry has carefully crafted and implemented coordinated initiatives and tailored of
outreach within individual jurisdictions.

ENERGY’S ROLE IN CANADA’S FINANCIAL SECTOR – EQUITY MARKETS, CAPITAL
REQUIREMENTS, TYPE OF INSTRUMENTS - WHAT DOES THE FINANCIAL SECTOR
NEED?
The need for capital in Canada’s energy sector has never been greater. All aspects of
the energy chain from resource development, processing facilities and transportation
through to end-users have significant capital requirements. In addition significant
projects are planned to refurbish many existing components in this chain that are
reaching the end of their useful economic life.
Projects generally get done in one of two ways, “on balance sheet” and independently
of their proponent’s balance sheet, or “project financed”.
This panel will examine the different pools of capital (equity, bank finance, export credit
agencies, bonds) that are potentially available and the characteristics of the projects
that are important to ensure that capital is attracted. The panel will provide an overview
to help ensure that proponents and ultimate end-users get projects developed with the
lowest possible cost of capital consistent with the risk of the project.
