Skanda Shashti marks the triumph of Lord Subrahmanya over the evil Soora Padma. The son of Lord Siva, also referred to by devotees as Skanda or Muruga killed the demon Sura Padma with His Holy Spear (Vel) and brought relief and joy to the suffering celestials and humans. Allegorically the Vel represents the Jnaana Shakti (Power of Wisdom) of the Lord and Sura Padma the demon of Ego and Ignorance within us. Lord Subrahmanya is hence considered to be the lord of wisdom who dispels our ego and ignorance. The devotees of Muruga observe austerities such as fasting and mounavratham starting from the day of Prathama Thithi to (and including) Skanda Shasti day. The Shashti Vratham begins on Thursday, November 12 and ends on Tuesday, Nov 17. The day after Skanda Shashti is celebrated as Devasena Kalyanam. During these days special Pujas will be held, with a grand culmination on the Skanda Shashti day. Participation in these pujas is believed to ward off evil and usher in peace and prosperity. On all six days, devotees wanting to take Kavadi can do so. Please register ahead of time at the Temple. There will be Shashti Kavacham recitation and bhajana singing after Abhishekam on all days. On Sunday the 15th, there will be Sahasrakalasaabishekam to Lord Muruga, and devotees will be able to take the kalasams in a procession around the Temple and will also be able to perform Abhishekam to a Vel in the Vasanta Mandapam. TULASI KALYANAM (Sunday November 22, 2015) The Dwaadasi day (12th day of the lunar fortnight) following Deepaavali is celebrated as Tulasi Kalyanam. Legend has it that Lord Krishna married Tulasi Devi that day. In many Udupi Krishna temples Tulasi Kalyanam is performed all 12 days in the Sri Madhwa tradition. 4:00 PM Purvanga Puja, Sri Krishna Aradhana, Tulasi Puja, Tulasi Kalyanam, Deeparadhana 5:30 PM Prasadam Distribution Sponsorship: $ 25 VEDA PARAYANAM DURING MANDALA (Monday November 16 – Sunday December 27, 2015) Vedas are the basis of the Hindu religion (also known as Sanatana Dharma). Vedas are without beginning (Anaadi), of Divine origin (Apourusheya) and endless (Ananta). However over the ages the vast majority of the Vedas have been lost and only small portions of that limitless ocean are available to us at the present time. It is a tradition in Siva and Vishnu temples in India to chant all sections of the Veda (currently known) during the Mandala period (41 days) beginning with first day of the Vrischika month (November 16 this year). This enables Pundits, who have learnt to chant the Vedas, to chant the portions of Vedas that they normally don’t use in the course of their daily prayers and also add to the positive vibrations of the ambience. Devotees can benefit by joining in the chanting themselves, listening to the chanting and by sponsoring such chanting. With the encouragement from our temple priests, who are all well-versed in Vedas, the temple is arranging chanting of the Vedas between 6 PM and 7 PM daily during the Mandala. All devotees are encouraged to attend and participate. It is a part of the scriptural trinity of Sanatana Dharma. The Gita deals with the most sacred metaphysical science as it imparts the knowledge of the self and answers two universal questions: Who am I? How can I lead a happy and peaceful life in this world of dualities? For info call: Smt. RUKMINI MAMI at 301-218-7550 Yoga – A Special Offering at SSVT – ‘Yoga is Connecting with the Divine’ Few people realize that yoga is the basis of worship in the temple. Without yoga or communion with the divine no worship by the priests is possible. The practice of yoga in the Aakaar room every Saturday from 7:30 am to 10:30 am is an opportunity for everyone to individually engage in yoga. • Please come for yoga sessions after your customary cleansing with bathing or showering, as you would before worshipping in the sanctum at the temple, before coming to yoga on Saturdays. • Keep the stomach light – preferably without food – but neither hunger nor a full stomach is good for yoga. While 90% of the world thinks yoga is physical exercises and connect it with gym offerings, it is time that you understood that yoga is your spiritual practice. More to come in the next newsletter. Send any questions on yoga to [email protected] and all attempts will be made to answer them as promptly as possible.
