Sani (Saturn) Transit Puja
November 2014
Ayyappa Mandala Makarotsavam
Saturn transits from one Zodiac sign to the next about
once every two and half years. As per the North American Panchangam, Saturn transits from Tula Raasi to
Vrischika Raasi on November 2 this year. According to
Vedic Astrology, transition of heavenly bodies like Saturn and Jupiter has an effect on the individuals born
under certain asterisms (Nakshatra). These effects could be characterized
as being either positive or negative depending on Raasi (Moon sign) of the
individual. To mitigate the negative effect and to enhance the positive effects of the transition, a special puja on November 2 will be performed by
our priests.

The 2014-2015 Ayyappa Mandala Makarotsavam will start with Bimba Sudhi and
Praasada Sudhi on November 16, 2014. The
actual MANDALA UTSAVA AARAMBHAM will start on Monday November 17,
2014 morning with Ganapathi Homam,
Dwaja Aarohanam, Sahasra abhishekam,
Archana, Deeparadhana and end in the evening with PADI PUJA, Athaazha Puja,
Seeveli, Harivaraasanam. The Ayyappa
MANDALA PUJA is on Saturday December 27, 2014, and the MAKARA SANKRANTHI Puja is on Wednesday, January
14, 2015. Ayyappa Pujas will be performed
in the morning and evenings every day, and
special Ayyappa Pujas will be performed on
weekends as per schedule found elsewhere in this Newsletter.

Annabhishekam is celebrated on the Poornima
day during the Hindu solar month of Tulaa.
Annam (cooked rice) is offered as Abhishekam
to Lord Siva after the Abhishekams with the
eleven usual ingredients. Lord Siva is decorated
with all the edible preparations, fruits and
vegetables after the Abhishekam. Devotees
may bring fruits and flowers for the
Alankaaram if they so desire. Details of the

The Shukla Ekadasi prior to Vaikunta Ekadasi was the day when Lord
Krishna imparted the Bhagavad Gita to His devotee Arjuna. This is celebrated as Gita Jayanthi. It is also an important Ekadasi in many parts of
India, especially in Guruvayoor. Special Pujas will be held to celebrate both
the events.

15, 2014 - January 13, 2015) at 9:30 am.
Copies of Thiruppaavai are available in several
languages in the temple.

Preserving, restoring, and growing our temple
In 2015, in accordance with the sastras, 12 years after the last major restoration project, the temple will celebrate its Jeernodharana Kumbhabhishekam.
Shilpis from India arrive in Fall 2014 to begin the work and the grand celebration will take place in late May 2015. The necessary repair works and
embellishments will cover the Rajagopuram, all Vimanas including Kalasas and the entire interior of the temple including sannidhis. A noteworthy
feature of this project will be the construction of a new meditation hall, classrooms and paduka mandapam in the current Balalaya premises. The
project will culminate with a grand festival consisting of religious ceremonies, cultural events, educational sessions and social service programs.
This is a million dollar undertaking and one of the finest opportunites for those who were not at the original founding to vest in the temple and have
“ownership” in it. So, we have created a unique program. Please make a donation now and pledge to do the same in 2015 so we can complete each
aspect of the rejuvenation of the temple. Your donations will go into a fund for this purpose and will be credited towards sponsorship of the 2015

Sivachariar Introduces Daily Upacharas for Siva Parivara
As advised by the Temple’s Saiva Agama Pradhana Acharya, Sri Shanmukha Sivachariar, our priests have started daily pujas to all Siva Parivara deities.
Our Agama priests are offering Panchasana Panchavarana poojas and special Nyasas using Pooja Pathrams as specified in Agamas. Basic pancha
pathrams for Saamanyaarghyam, Paadyam, Aachamanam, Arghyam and Vishesha Arghyam is being advised for SSVT. Sivachariar felt that the deities
are dry without the basic Upacharas. In case the Agama priests are not available, other priests will perform the Upacharas as per their Paddatis.

How to prepare irumudi (in brief)
After performing Ayyappa Puja, fill the mudra coconut with melted ghee. If you are a Kanni
Ayyappan or Kanni Maalikappuram (first timer), Guruswamy will help you to fill the mudra coconut
with ghee. Mudra coconut and other Pujaitems must be placed in the front pocket of the Irumudi
and the other two coconuts must be placed in the rear pocket. Always keep chanting the names of
Lord Ayyappa while preparing the Irumudi. Never place the Irumudi on the floor; always place it on
a towel and treat it with Bhakthi.

Homeless SEVA, Sandwich Program, Second Saturday, 2014
■■ Each month, on the 2nd Saturday, volunteers make sandwiches for the homeless. Every time, roughly about 1500 sandwiches are prepared and
delivered to Martha’s Table, a DC shelter.
■■ SSVT encourages all devotees especially youth to participate in the program. Please be at the Temple at 10:30 am. Devotees can sponsor this

Team Illusion supports high school science mentoring in the Aakar tradition of being in the community. We meet two days a week: Monday and
Friday between 5-9 pm. We are always looking for dedicated teenagers who can work independently and as a team. Our aim is to train the young
minds in a respective positive environment and prepare them for a competition at Univ. Maryland and George Mason University in Spring 2015.

1st SSVT Annual Sri Haridaasa Day (Haridaasa Aaraadhane) Report
The first annual Sri Haridaasa Day (Haridaasa Aaradhane) was celebrated
at SSVT on October 11th with great devotion, enthusiasm and joy by
all devotees and music lovers of Haridaasa music and literature. People
enjoyed the day long program that was laced with Individual, group
singing, and dance performances. The evening saw the SSVT auditorium
fully packed for the grand finale concert by Sangeetha Vidhya Nidhi Sri
Vidyabhushana.
said that Tamboori (Tanpura) was a metaphor for a human body and its
chakras. Tuning of the Tamboori symbolizes turning one’s physical and
spiritual body to the spiritual divine energy.
The day began as a gloomy and rainy day. It was a symbolic indication
of ignorance and darkness felt by a saadhaka (aspirant) as he/she
begins the spiritual journey ! This did little to dampen the enthusiasm
of the devotees though. The celebrations were planned to begin with
Mettilotsava, comprising of pradakshiNa (circumambulation) around the
temple singing devara naamas and hymns. The rain, however, forced this
to be conducted within the temple premises. Mettilotsava ended at the Sri
Krishna sannidhi with a pooja by Priest Sri Narayana Bhattar. Link to

After the opening ceremony, the Group singing session led by Smt. Usha
Char and her students kicked off the morning session with the rendition
of seven Sri Purandara daasa kritis with great devotion and melody.
They were accompanied by Chi Kamalkiran Vinjamuri on the violin and
Sri Jayanth Balasubramanian on the Mridangam. Individual singing by
various students ranging from age 8 to adults was next. All participants
sang Devara naamas with devotion and equal emphasis on sincerity which
was a treat to watch. The afternoon session began with presentations by
various teachers in the area. Smt. Vaidehi Kannan, Smt. Subhadra Keshava
Murthy and Sri V.K. Raman presented various compositions with their
students. This was followed by scintillating dance performances, specially
choreographed to Haridaasa kritis, by the students of area dance teachers
and ably coordinated by Smt. Shobha Subramanian.
The festivities continued on in the auditorium with the ‘Lighting of the
lamp’ by Sri Vidyabhushana. Devotees were especially fortunate to receive
Aashirvachana and a short but brilliant keynote speech over the phone
by the esteemed Philosopher, Writer, Vedantic /Sanksrit scholar, Poet
and a modern day Rishi Sri Bannanje Govindaachaarya. In his brief
remarks, he outlined an overview of the Haridaasa movement explaining
how Haridaasas took the exclusive Vedantic knowledge and rituals of the
pundits and made it available to the common man in their day to day
language. This was a revolutionary transformation in the spiritual history
of India. He went on to say that Haridaasas were considered by many of
the sanskrit scholars as not practicing maDi (ritual purity) because they
wrote and sang in the vernacular language Kannada. On the contrary, the
Haridaasas had in fact saved the sampradaaya and religion by conveying
the original teachings which were in sanskrit in a language that was
understood and appreciated by the common man even while facing issues
such as discrimination.
Sri Govindacharya further said that Sri Madhvaacharya, himself a great
musician and singer, laid the ground work for the Haridaasa movement
and music by composing Dwadasha stotras. For the first time in the
Sanskrit literature, he composed stotras that lent itself to be sung as
musical compositions. The first few Haridaasas like Sri Narahari Theertha,
SriPaada Rajaru, Sri Vyaasa Theertharu were all saints in the maadhva
sampradaaya. Later, house holders like Sri Purandara Daasaru and Sri
Kanaka Daasaru laid the foundation for the Haridaasa movement.
He went on to explain how Sri Purandara Daasaru laid the foundations
for the Carnatic music system which are followed even today. Sri
Vidyabushana followed this and spoke about the Haridaasa tradition. He
Sri Vidyabhushana released the souvenir that was published for the occasion
containing informative articles on the life history and compositions of the

While the stage was being set for the concert by Sri Vidyabhushana, an
important book on Haridaasa sahitya was released. Sri B K Nagendra,
from this area, has published a collection of the commentaries of Sri
Purandara Daasa kritis by Late Sri Badragiri Keshavadaas, a 20th century
Haridaasa, Harikatha exponent and a scholar. It was indeed appropriate
that this book was released by Sri Vidyabhushana on this occasion.
The Grand Finale was set for Sri Vidyabhushana’s performance with
a packed hall and people being seated on the stage too. The buzz of
expectation in the audience was palpable and they were not disappointed.
Sri Vidyabhushana sang devara naama kritis in an outstanding fashion
and held the audience spell bound for the duration of the event. He began
with the ugabhoga “kaDu karuni neenendaaritu...” followed by Kriti
“nammama shaarade uma maheshari” on Maha Ganapathi. The concert
unfolded with a string of devara naamas that transported the audience to a
magical world of devotion. 9 PM seemed to come too soon and it was time
for the concert to end. Sri Vidyabhushana was ably accompanied by Chi.
Kamalkiran Vinjamuri (Violin), Sri VK Raman (Flute), Dr. Swaminathan
(Mridangam) and Sri Sowmiya Narayanan (Ghatam).
The tradition was followed in its entirety with the serving of mouthwatering
Dinner and it is safe to say that the inaugural Haridaasa Araadhane was a
complete success. People got a taste of rich devotional music and literature
of Haridaasas. People are already looking forward to this being an annual
fixture.

This annual music festival is a homage to two of the most prominent composers in Carnatic Music: Sri Mutthuswamy Dikshitar (1775-1835) and Sri Syama Sastri (1762-1827).
Saturday November 1 will highlight the contributions of Sri Dikshitar.
Both the days will have Special presentations by local Music Teachers,
Mini concerts, and Group and Individual presentations by Music lovers
of the area. The evening Finale of the Saturday Program will be a Grand
Vocal Concert by Dr.Panthula Rama and accompanying artists.
Sunday November 2 will highlight the contributions of Sri Syama
Sastri, and includes a group rendition of Syama Sastri’s Ratna
Trayam (his 3 majestic swarajatis and other selected krithis).
The evening Finale of the Sunday program will be a Special Vocal Concert
by Sri. Palghat Ramprasad and accompanying artists (Admission to entire
2-day event is Free. Donations welcome). The festival is open to all
music lovers of the greater Washington DC metro area to attend and
participate in individual and group singing. (Rendition of either Sri
Dikshtar or Syama Sastri Krithis welcome).
