MEENAKSHI KALYANAM
Sunday May 1, 2016
The union of Lord Siva with Parvati in the
form of Meenakshi took place in Madurai on
the Chitra Pournami day. This union is
celebrated in many of the Siva temples
around the world as Meenakshi Kalyanam.
Lord Vishnu, who is the brother of
Meenakshi, gave away the bride to Lord Siva.
Hence in our temple which is dedicated to
Siva and Vishnu (and their families) this
festival has an added significance.

Akshaya Tritiya
Sunday, May 8, 2016
Akshaya Trittiya is Parasurama Jayanti, where Parasurama is one of the
Avatars of Maha Vishnu. The word Akshaya means growth and trittiya is
the third tithi. It is believed that any ritual done on that day leads to growth
and hence jewelry and ornaments are bought on that day for overall
prosperity. Gandha (Chandanam) Alankaram is traditionally performed
for Lord Krishna on this day to cool the body of the Lord so that he will
bestow us with all wealth.

Akhanda Sri Ramcharita Maanas Recitation
Saturday, May 14 - Sunday, May 15, 2016
Siddhagranthas are books that have the power to grant devout readers their desires or Siddhis. One such Siddhagranthas is Sri Ramcharita
Maanas, authored by Goswami Sri Tulsidasji. Sri Ramcharita Maanas also
known as Tulsi Ramayana is one of the famous devotional compositions of
Goswami Tulsidasji. Hanuman Chaaleesaa is another of his popular hymn.
Maanas was composed in the local Hindi language during his time so that
a commoner might understand the glory of the Bhagwan Sri Rama.
It is a tradition in many Hindu communities to recite Ramayana
continuously over a period of 24 hours to get the grace of the Lord. The
Temple will be holding a continuous recitation by devotees from 12:01PM
on Saturday May 14 through Sunday May 15, 2016, followed by the
chanting of Sri Hanuman Chaleesa, and Sri Rama Bhajans by devotees
and end with Mangala Aaarti by 1:00 P.M. All devotees are encouraged to
participate in this unique offering to the Lord.

the inner self to prepare for the higher yoga. You will never find this in yoga studios. Our practices are gentle that can be
done by anyone in any age-group in almost any state of health. Send any questions on yoga to [email protected] and

ROBOTICS CLUB ACTIVITIES & SCHEDULE
The Robotics Club restarts its year in August. The makerspace is available for parents and children to come and use the resources but it wont have UMD
mentors. We had a wonderful year with our team being an alliance captain (ranked 7/38) at the Belair Northern Maryland FRC event. Our teams that were
spawned from Team Illusion were in the semifinals at the DC regional in Bethesda and Chenelle Foster who was with Team Illusion for 3 years was nominated
to represent the highest character (DEAN’s List this year). For more information please contact [email protected]
