VENKATESHWARA
BRAMHOTSAVAM
Wednesday, April 8- Sunday, April 12, 2015
To ward off all sins, Brahmotsavam is celebrated. Lord Brahma Himself is
believed to have celebrated the first Brahmotsavam to please His
father Vishnu and according to some legend this was the beginning of the
Brahmotasavam. In keeping with the tradition, Venkateswara
Brahmotsavam will be celebrated in our temple from April 8 to April 12.
One of the most important features of the Brahmotsavam is the Brahma
Rathotsavam (Chariot Festival) on the last day wherein everybody gets to
pull the chariot.

JK Celebration - May 25-31, 2015
SSVT is celebrating the Jeenodharana Kumbhabhishekam from May
25-31, 2015. Presiding over the religious ceremonies are SSVT’s two
Pradhan Acharyas, Sri Shanmukha Sivacharyar from Chennai and
Sri Koti Ramaswaroopa Raghavacharyulu from Badrachalam. Our
learned temple priests, accompanied by visiting priests from India
and around the US, will conduct the ceremonies in accordance with
Shaiva, Vaishnava, Tantric and Madhwa Agamas. Our Sthapati, Madhu
Selvanathan, whose shilpis have been hard at work through snow and ice,
will also grace the occasion. The weekend preceding the Jeernodharana
Kumbhabhishekam is full of special activities.
On Saturday, May 23rd there is a special puja by women of all ages,
Manjal Neerattu. On Sunday, May 24th we have an afternoon discourse
in English tailored for a youth audience by Shri Dushyant Sridhar from
Chennai. Then in the evening, a grand kick-off concert for all ages by
Shri Yesudas, followed by dinner. The ceremonies starts on Monday, May
25th with Poorvanga Pujas and Maha Sankalpam. Details of the various
pujas by day will be published in the program. Sunday, May 31 is the
culmination with the Vimana Rajagopura Mahakumbhabhishekam and
the Moolalaya Maha Kumbhabhishekam
SSVT wishes to express its eternal gratitude to the Asthana Acharyas of
the temple, Sri Sri Savya Sachi Swamigal and Sri Sri T. S. Sambamurthy
Sivachariar, and to our Chief Architect, Dr V. Ganapati Sthapati. These
departed souls have left us with cherished memories and their manifold
blessings.
JK2015 UPDATE
Shilpis from India are working on the restoration- the Rajagopuram
and Balaji gopuram repairs are complete after the essence of Divinities
epitomized in these two majestic spires were temporarily encased in
iconic drawings through “Kala Akarshanam”. It is now represented in
the Balaalayam specially established for this purpose in the Vasantha
Mandapam. As the divine energy transfer is taking place the sanctum
(sannidhis) closings started in the first week of March. Despite all
the weather issues, work is almost complete outside on the Anantha
Padmanabha vimana and on the Ayyappa gopuram.
The work covers all Vimanas including Kalasas and the entire interior
of the temple including sannidhis. The “Jeerna + Uddharanam –
Revitalization and Restoration” project culminates with the grand
Kumbhabhishekam festival consisting of religious ceremonies, cultural
events, educational sessions and social service programs. JK2015 is a $1
million endeavor and needs all our support.
All Donors have been mailed VIP tickets for the Gundecha Brothers/
Malladi Brothers marquee concert on April 18, 2015. Plus get ad space
in the Souvenir Brochure and 50% of tickets for the Kick-Off Concert
by Yesudas on Sunday, May 24th, based on donor level. Please fill out a
sponsorship form online or leave it at the front desk. Please see details of
the donor program and have your family recognized as a next generation
founder.

LAKSHMI NARAYANA
HRIDAYA PUJA
Saturday, April 4, 2015
SSVT will conduct this puja at 7pm on Saturday, April 4th in honor of
Goddess Mahalakshmi and to invoke Her blessings for the upcoming JK
event to be celebrated in the temple. In SriVaikunta, Sri Mahalakshmi has
a status that is equal in all ways to that of Sriman Naraayana. The Goddess Mahalakshmi also plays an equal role in Antharyaamithvam.
Sri Alavandaar, Sri Ramaanujar, Sri Swami Desikan, have all praised
Goddess Mahalakshmi as the One who is most capable of granting
Moksha. Hence one who recites these slokas with ‘parama-bhakti’ is
bestowed with all wishes. Even if they are not destined to have ‘Kaarya
Siddhi’ or goodluck, due to the power of these mantras, Goddess Mahalakshmi, the embodiment of kindness, is able to erase the ‘Janma-Libhi’, or
destiny, thus blessing them with whatever they wish for.

VISHU, TAMIL & TULU NEW YEAR
(Manmatha Nama Samvatsara)
Tuesday, April 14, 2015
Vishu signifies the entry of sun into Mesha Raasi and it is believed to bring
good luck if one views auspicious things the first thing in the morning.
Hence on this day in Kerala, homes are beautifully decorated and auspicious items are kept at the family altar. Tamil and Tulu New year are celebrated by worshiping the family deities, preparation of sweet and other
delicacies and the reading of the Panchangam (Religious Almanac). The
panchangam reading provides a list of all good and auspicious things as
well as any adverse type of events that are likely to occur that year due to
the transitory movements of planets as well as due to the presiding deity for the year. It is believed that listening to the panchangam reading
will magnify the predicted good effects and mitigate the effect of adverse
events. A unique feature of the celebration is the ARCHANA for all deities
of our temple in sequence starting from 5:30 PM.
9:00 am Vishu Kani, Mahaganapathi Homam
9:30 am Abhishekam to Ganesha
10:00 am Abhishekam to Siva & Anantapadmanabha, Ayyappa Puja

Panguni Uttiram (the day Uttaraphalguni star occurs in the solar month
of Meena) is one of the rare festivals that have significance for several
deities in our temple. It is the Jayanti (day of incarnation) of Lord
Ayyappa, the day that Sri Valli married Lord Subramanya, the day that Goddess
Mahalakshmi incarnated on earth from the ocean of milk, the day
Goddess Parvathi in the form of Kamakshi (or Gowri) married Lord Siva
in Kanchipuram. It is only fitting that we celebrate this festival in our
temple with all the religious grandeur so that our congregation can receive
the blessings of many Gods and Goddesses.
AKSHAYA TRITTIYA
Monday, Apr 20, 2015
Akshaya Trittiya is Parasurama Jayanti, where Parasurama is one of the
Avatars of Maha Vishnu. The word Akshaya means growth and trittiya
is the third tithi. It is believed that any ritual done on that day leads to
growth and hence jewelry and ornaments are bought on that day for
overall prosperity. Gandha (Chandanam) Alankaram is traditionally
performed for Lord Krishna on this day to cool the body of the Lord so
3
that he will bestow us with all wealth.

Sunday, May 3, 2015
The union of Lord Siva with Parvati in the form of Meenakshi took place
in Madurai on the Chitra Poornima day. This union is celebrated in many
of the Siva temples around the world as Meenakshi Kalyanam. Lord
Vishnu, who is the brother of Meenakshi, gave away the bride to Lord
Siva. Hence in our temple which is dedicated to Siva and Vishnu (and

2nd Annual SSVT Sri Papanasam Sivan Festival
Saturday, May 16th, 2015
On Saturday May 16th, 2015, SSVT will celebrate its second annual SSVT Sri Papanasam Sivan Festival. This great composer of the 20th century
(September 26, 1890 – October 10, 1973), known as “Tamil Thyagayya” will be remembered that day in music and dance, through his varied
compositions such as varnams, padams, javalis, krithis etc. The festival is open to all rasikas of the greater Washington DC Metro area to attend
and participate as individuals or groups. All music / dance items should be strictly limited to 5 minutes or less. Raga alapana or swara kalpana
are not expected. Group participation is encouraged in order to accommodate a larger number of participants. Sri Papanasam Sivan used to go
around the Mada streets surrounding the Kapaleeshwarar temple in Mylapore singing songs in praise of the deity. In emulating this practice,
the SSVT event will start with a Giri Pradakshinam, a procession around the SSVT temple prakaram. All devotees and music participants are
invited to join in the procession singing, culminating in an archana at the Praakara Ganapathy Sannidhi. The highlight of the evening will be a
vocal concert by the leading musician Sri. Bharat Sundar, accompanied by Sri V.V.Murari (violin), Sri Trivandrum Balaji (mrudangam), and Sri
K.V. Gopalakrishnan (kanjira). Admission to the entire event is free.
To register for participation, you may follow this link: http://tinyurl.com/2015-PS-Festival, and provide the required registration information.
Time slots will be allotted, as available, in the order the requests are received. The deadline for registration is May 9, 2015. Further program
details and updates will be available via the temple notice board and website. Preetha Narayanaswany (in VA) and Vaidehi Kannan (MD) will
be teaching a few krithis for the processional singing. Please contact them if you would like to learn the songs and participate in the procession.

Design Your Own Temple
May 3, 2015 9 am - 4pm
As part of the celebration of the Jeernodharana Kumbhabhishekam 2015, a special program is being organized for
youth and adults. This requires your involvement and imagination!
Design Your Own Temple (DYOT) will be on Sunday, May 3rd from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in two-hour sessions. We will have information sessions during the day on JK2015 and information on Vaastu Shastra.. The idea is to make all the participants familiar with
the various aspects of the temple and to give them a basic idea of how a temple is designed on a computer-based platform.DYOT
will be held in the temple premises based on hands-on learning principles.
The shilpis (the artisans who are currently working very hard to renovate the temple) will be there to oversee the proceedings and
talk about their experiences with temple design. Participants will be broken into 3 groups and each group will focus on a different
aspect of the temple i.e. the synergy of Siva and Vishnu as represented in the Rajagopuram, the congregation area in the
Vasantha Mandapam and the Garbha Graha where the Lord is manifested. Participants will each be given a pen and paper to
come up with their own envisioned design and the best one will be chosen to print on the 3-D printer. All participants must be
registered (nominal registration fee of $10 will be required).
In parallel, at the Orbit Lane house (8812 Orbit Lane) with software provided there, selected participants will be chosen to
do their designs and training. Lectures on CAD (Computer Aided Design) will be going on there (the home base for Robotics Team Illusion 4464) to give an idea of what it takes to model the temple on a computer. The 3-D printer will also be up and
running so that participants can play around with it. Participants will receive a model as memento later in the month and Team
Illusion 4464 will be distributing T-Shirts to participants during the event. It is therefore highly recommended that you reserve a
seat for yourself (as soon as possible).
The three aspects of the temple, together in printed design, will be unveiled by the Acharyas on Sunday, May 31st at the
Kumbhabhishekam ceremony. It will then be kept on display in the Vasantha Mandapam. Team Illusion 4464 will provide the
necessary apparatus for the event to happen and we hope that you will all participate and make it a grand success.
IMPORTANT DATA POINTS:
1. The event will be held on Sunday, May 3rd.
2. You must register to participate in the DYOT.
3. The entry fee is $10 per participant. You can register online at www.ssvt.org
