The Chamber is an independent, non-profit, voluntary association of businesses and individuals striving to improve and invest in the economic and civic vitality of the communities they serve. The Chamber is comprised of a wide variety of business types, including home-based, small and large businesses, retailers, hotels, restaurants, non-profit organizations, educational and health institutions and many more. The common thread through each of these businesses and entrepreneurs is their commitment to the Chamber’s mission of “Leading the communities of Copeville, Josephine, Lavon and Nevada in the creation of an environment that promotes the prosperity of our businesses, schools and citizens”. Each year, the Chamber takes pride in awarding scholarships to graduating CISD seniors in support of excellence in education within our communities. We have the pleasure of participating in Community Independent School District’s recognition of their Teachers and Students of the Year, followed by the Chamber’s own small and large Business, Public Servant and Citizen of the Year awards. Members benefit from networking mixers, presentations from business and community leaders, information about legislation, development and planning concerning area businesses, advocacy before City Councils, enhanced visibility through listings in the Member Directory and on the Chamber website, participation in new business grand openings and ribbon cuttings, and the opportunity to attend special events and charitable activities. Should you have an interest in joining the Chamber as a member or volunteer or simply need additional information about the area, please do not hesitate to contact us either via phone at 972 853-7092, email: [email protected], or visit our website at lavonareachamber.org. Thompson, operator of the town’s first post office established in 1888 when the Louis, Arkansas and Texas Railway laid tracks. The community was settled in the mid1850s on the shores of Bear Creek. Lavon is the site of the grave of John Abston, who fought in the battle of King’s Mountain in the American Revolution. Despite the construction of Lake Lavon in 1953, Lavon’s population has seen only slight increases since the 1930s. The ’30s population was about 200. Population estimates for 2010 are 2,219. According to the 2010 census, there are 775 housing units in Lavon with an occupancy rate of 95 percent. The 2011 population figure had grown to 2,370. Copeville Copeville got its name from Miles Cope, one of the area’s earliest settlers. Cope, his father and brother organized the community in the 1850s. A post office was established in 1878. By 1885 there was a church, a school, a cotton gin, a sawmill, a flour mill and a general store. In 1886 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe laid tracks east of Copeville and, not long after, residents moved their houses and businesses to the line to take advantage of the railroad. Between 1885 and 1890, Copeville supplied bois d’arc timber to Dallas. By 1915 about 300 people lived in Copeville, but by 1926 it had fallen to 240. In 1990, it was 106. Nevada John McMinn, his family and friends established the first community here in the early 1840s. Called McMinn Chapel, the community was located about 4 miles north of the present day town site. In 1861 Granville Stinebaugh – a newcomer from Missouri – bought 160 acres near McMinn Chapel, and the town of Nevada was established on his farm. He called it Nevada in honor of the Nevada Territory, which he had visited while on the way to California to search for gold. In 1880, a post office opened and, eight years later, the St. Louis Southwestern Railway brought tracks to the community. The community was incorporated in 1889. From a population of 50 in 1885, the town grew to almost 600 by 1920. The 625 people living in Nevada by 1925 had paved roads, electricity, a telephone exchange and a high school. A tornado struck the town on May 9, 1927, killing 27. Seventy-five more were injured, and estimates put the property damage at about $1 million. Life in Nevada was never the same. The Great Depression hit, and the farming way of life began to decline due to mechanization. By 1950, there were 386 residents. Census figures give a 1980 population of 400 and in 1990, 456. The 2010 U.S. Census puts the Nevada population at 612 with 313 housing units at 93 percent occupancy. Josephine Josephine was founded in 1888, when the tracks of the St. Louis, Arkansas and Texas Railway reached the area. The community was named in honor of the daughter of J.C. Hubbard, who donated the land for a townsite. A post office opened that year as well. Enjoying a heyday in the early 1900s, the town boasted paved streets, electricity, a public school, 16 businesses and a population of more than 500 by 1930. By 1940, the Depression has slimmed that number to 350. The city was incorporated in 1955. There were 601 people living in Josephine in 2010, and the city’s 316 housing units had an occupancy rate of 89 percent. c 2012 Business Directory |Lavon Area Chamber of Commerce 9 Alphabetical Member Listing ACD Learning Solutions Allen Krom 210 Rushcreek Drive Wylie TX 75098 972-768-6073 www.acdlearningsolutions.com Adaptive Learning, LLC/Math Tutoring Gena Kemp-Brown 506 Lincoln Ave Lavon TX 75166 (646) 732-7594 Art Nails Michelle Huynh 401C Highway 78 North Wylie TX 75098 972-429-6315 artnailswylie.com See our ad on page 13 Ballard Street School of Performing Arts Rob Hunter 130 N. The Empire College, birthplace of the Empire Masonic Lodge No. 586, was a historic place in the southeastern part of Collin County. According to Collin County Historical Commission member Linda Hess, the college provided a place for early settlers to receive an education. The legacy of the Empire College continues through the Empire Masonic Lodge No. 586. The Empire College, also known at the Bear Creek Academy, was located in the southeastern part of Collin County about 1.5 miles southeast of Copeville and 2 miles northwest of Nevada along the south bank of the George Creek. J.E. “Tarheel” Jones came to Texas from North Carolina in 1867. He was the teacher of the Empire College, which was located on one acre of land deeded to Bear Creek Academy at Empire in 1869. In 1883 Jones called a meeting of the local landholders to build a public subscription school. The Empire Academy building was 26 by 50 and 18 feet high. The lower floor was used for a first-class school. The upper floor was used by the Masonic, Eastern Star and Knights of Honor lodges. The Empire College was the birthplace of the Empire Masonic Lodge No. 586 on Dec. 14, 1884, when 25 Master Masons petitioned the Grand Lodge of Texas to form a Masonic Lodge at Empire. Five of the charter members were also subscribers to the Empire College. The first officers for Empire Lodge No. 586 were M.W. McBride, Worshipful Master; E.B. Simmons, Senior Warden; W.M. Blakeman, Junior Warden; Jones, secretary; and J.L. Stallings, treasurer. The meetings were held on the Saturday before the full moon. In the years of 1886 and 1887, the Gulf Colorado Santa Fe Railroad came through Collin County with a route from Wylie to Copeville to Farmersville, bypassing Empire to the northwest. In the years 1887 and 1888, the St. Louis Southwestern Cotton Belt Railroad also came through the southern part of the county with a route from Wylie to Nevada and Josephine, bypassing Empire to the south. With the railroads bypassing Empire, the community declined. With the decline of Empire, the Masonic Lodge moved from Empire to Nevada in 1888. The lodge bought lots 1 and 2 in block 2 in the town for $82 and built a twostory wooden continued on page 22 Linda Hess and Earl Price unveiled both the Empire College marker and Empire Masonic Lodge No. 586 historical marker. On March 27, 1900, the lodge helped the Farmersville Lodge No 214 with the laying of the cornerstone for the First Baptist Church of Farmersville. On May 28, 1904, the Empire Lodge bought the J. E. Davis brick building on the northwest corner of the Nevada square for $2,500; the firm of Evans and Gooch bought the old wooden building for $225. On May 9, 1927, the lodge was destroyed by the massive tornado that killed 27 people, injured 75 and destroyed the town square. The lodge collected $1,303 in donations from fellow lodges and $1,000 from the Grand Lodge and took out a loan for $1,250 for the construction of a new building. The academy building burned in 1914 after it was given to the Bear Creek School. The Bear Creek School District continued for many years until it was consolidated with the Community Independent School District. c 2012 Business Directory |Lavon Area Chamber of Commerce 23
