Bathroom Do’s and Don’ts:
Text Laura Stein
Do tile the ceiling above your shower. It helps prevent
mould and mildew build-up, and avoids the problems with
bubbling and peeling paint.
Don’t use tumbled stone on your shower floor. It is the
most porous finish and will quickly absorb soap scum and
grow mould.
Do use polished mosaic tile on your floor. Large polished
tiles may be slippery when wet, but mosaics are a perfect
solution. Not only do they look beautiful, but the multiple
grout lines provide traction and help prevent slips.
Don’t randomly end tile in the middle of a wall without a
natural stopping point or something decorative to cap the
edge. It looks tacky and unfinished. Try using a marble or
ceramic chair rail, a pencil (a half-round piece to match your
tile) or a stone jamb.
Do incorporate a shampoo niche into your shower. It
provides neat storage for all your essentials and keeps
everything handy at eye-level.

A kitchen is generally a place associated with happy times. Most family
events centre around food. In the past, the gatherings happened around
the dinner table while the cooking was done more privately, separately in
the kitchen. The two spaces are now blended together to create the perfect
colourful entertainment area.

You can add colour to your kitchen area in various ways. The tiny bit of
wall space left after everything is installed, lends itself well to an accent
colour like red, yellow or cobalt blue. You can then carry that same colour
to the knobs on the cabinets. For the finishing touches, look for a small
appliance that will sit on the counter top. KitchenAid has a diverse range of
products in fun punchy colours.
The kitchen doesn’t have to be all in one colour of wood clad appliances
and cabinets. You can make the whole room a happy place by injecting bold
colours in unexpected places.

Don’t insist on solid wood cabinets if you plan to have a painted finish. Wood
expands and contracts with changes in humidity but paint does not, which
means as soon as the season changes, the paint will crack. For painted cabinets,
the best material is MDF (medium density fibreboard), a man-made wood
composite that is completely stable and looks just like wood when painted.
Because it doesn’t move, there will never be cracks in the paint.

of solid doors and makes the space feel open and airy. Use frosted or textured
glass if you are concerned about hiding what’s inside the cabinet.
Don’t place your dishwasher or oven in a location that blocks the main traffic
route in and around the kitchen when the appliance doors are open. Not only is
it inconvenient, it can also be hazardous.
Do place your fridge at the end of a run of cabinets rather than in a corner.
Make sure you have at least eighteen inches of counter space nearby to put
things down.

When using a monochromatic colour palette,
This kitchen design
concept is two toned to
create a sense of lightness in its upper part and
more weight in the lower section. The colours were
selected to give the kitchen a warmer, darker
and homier feel. A kitchen is no longer just a
space to prepare meals; it has also become an
entertainment area. The use of decorative lighting
and stone counter tops in warm colours (combined
perhaps with natural stone for the transitional
kitchen or stainless steel for the modern space)
offers a sense of something special. By adding
appliances in brighter colours, such as a daring red,
you provide that extra bit of pop. The end result? A
smashing kitchen you’ll be proud of for a long time
to come.

use a variety of textures to keep visual interest. This Erth Coverings wall tile used on a pillar
or accent wall has a mix of warm and cool browns to give this kitchen an organic, rustic
backdrop. To provide contrast, select a dark, rich coloured quartz counter top. A delicate
back splash provides a feminine touch in this dramatic design concept. Modern pendants
add a bit of sparkle and a contemporary edge. A minimal table and bar stool set finish the
look of this modern kitchen.

It is often difficult for anyone to understand why a bathroom
renovation should take the time that is does. There are several
things to remember about a bathroom as opposed to a bedroom
or living room and that is that all trades must attend the job site in
order to get the job done. The element of space also means that
rarely can more than one person work at a time. I recommend
that you always keep one working bathroom in the house (don’t
do them all at the same time unless you are away). Also be sure
that you have done all of the planning before you even think of
starting the physical work. Planning well will ensure that the rest
of the process will go smoothly. Make a decision about how you
are going to use the bathroom and if you have enough space for
both a bathtub and a shower.

Construction work:
Demolition - It is generally a fairly quick job, but a messy one. It
can take longer if the location of the bathroom makes it difficult
or time consuming to get the materials out of the space. - 2 days
it to dry before he/she sands it to get a very smooth surface
appropriate for paint. This process sometimes needs to be
repeated a few times. – 2 days
Rough carpentry and plumbing rough in – If there are
materials that have to be repaired as a result of the previous
bathroom layout, or if you are going to move walls in the
bathroom to borrow space from a joining room, you will need to
do some rough carpentry. Once that is complete, the plumber is
going to require “rough in”. These are all of the pipes and drains
that need to go behind the walls, to feed the showers, faucets, jets
etc. - 2 to 5 days
Tile work – This process can vary depending on the surface
below on which the tiles have to be installed and if you are
installing porcelain or stone in the space. Again with tiles, you
must allow drying time before you can move to the next step.
The complexity of the area can make it more difficult as well
as the amount of tile that needs to be installed both inside the
shower and on the main bath floor. - 3 to 5 days
Electrical work – If you are planning on having pot lights, vanity
lights, GFI plugs, the electrician will require approximately one full
day to complete the job. Plan for more if you are installing bubble
tubs and heated flooring units. A good electrician can generally
work very efficiently. – 2 days
Insulation and hanging Drywall – The installation process
should go fairly quickly and generally it’s where you start to really
feel a sense of progress on the job. Insulation takes about half
a day while the hanging of the drywall may take a full day to
complete. – 1.5 days
Finish Drywall – This means the drywall installer has to apply
joint compound at each seam or cut in the drywall and allow
Cabinetry – Generally the cabinets are made off site and just
require installation. There can be small adjustments that need to
be made to get everything to fit but it is generally a fairly quick
process. – 1 day
Fixtures – Installing the toilet, sink and the finish plumbing
which is the knobs and spouts that you see when you use a
bathroom. All of this has to be connected to the shut-off valves in
order to make the space functional. – 2 days
Miscellaneous – Allow time to install the towel bars, put up
lights, paint or wall paper the space, hang art work as well as
time for things that come up during the process that you cannot
anticipate until you are in the middle of the process. – 2 days

Kitchen Remodeling Timeline
Text Glen Peloso
The planning is the most arduous part of any kitchen renovation
but ultimately the most important part. Not having a good plan is like
traveling in a foreign country without a map. It could work out very well
but it is equally likely you will end up robbed and in a flea bitten motel.
Renos are a foreign land and your plans are your team’s map.
Step One
How much space do you have to work with? Is it going to be sufficient
for your needs or are you going to (a) need to move walls or (b) extend
the house.
If you move walls you will need to hire an architect, designer or
engineer to ensure that the wall can be moved without affecting the
structure of the house.
If you are extending the house then an architect and designer will need
to be present, along with permit and clearances from the city etc. For this
timeline – we will assume you are going to work with an existing space.
– An hour to several weeks/months for permit drawings and permits.
Step Two
The appliances are really the centre of the kitchen. Everything else is
essentially storage and has to work around the appliances.
First, figure out how you cook! Are you a Chef, a food lover, a food
warmer or an ‘eating out” person. The cost of an appliance will go up the
more you need it to do. If you make tea and warm soup you likely don’t
need much but if you are a little “Madame Benoit’ you may want more.
– Approx 1 week to research and place orders.
Step Three
You are going to need water!
Do you want a double sink or single? Would you also like to have an
island veg sink? What about a pot filler over the stove? Once you decide
where you want to have water then you need to decide on the faucets.
The placement of fixtures will affect the cabinets as you will need the
plumbing to run inside them along with drains. They need to be planned
out carefully before you start to drill holes in the floor.
Some people like chrome while others like to have brushed steel, copper
or lacquered (black, white, red, blue, etc). Knowing that, you’ll want to
consider style. Is your space going to be classic, transitional or much more
modern? I promise, the selection is vast! - 1 to 4 days
This is where everyone (including your mother-in-law) will have an
opinion so things can really slow down! You may also find that you want
to change the size of your appliances based on the space you have left .
Be prepared for a little give and take.
When you settle on the design, then place the orders for the appliances,
faucets and cabinets. - 1 to 2 weeks design, 6 to 16 weeks for cabinets to
be constructed.
Step Five
The hard surfaces in the kitchen: this includes the flooring, counter tops
and back splash. There are flooring tiles in ceramic, porcelain and stone
or you can select a hardwood, cork or bamboo flooring. That decision
depends on the look you are striving for.
Check for stock to be in at least a week and a half before cabinets are
installed.
Counter top options include granite and marble, man-made stones
like Caesar stone, Cambria, flex stone, Corian or laminates (marble isn’t
recommended for a kitchen generally) and all of them (laminate aside)
need to have a template made so they fit perfectly in your home.
A template happens after cabinets are installed. Finished product won’t
arrive for a couple of weeks.
Back splash is selected based on the counter top and is installed after
the counter top is installed so be sure you are looking at something that
is available within the week after your counter top is installed. - 1 to 3
weeks.
Step Six
The finishing touches – like the paint, stools for the island, kitchen table,
chairs and window coverings.
Window coverings generally need to be custom made for your home
– so add a few weeks for that.
Paint colour can be a bit stronger as there is generally very little wall
space to paint when everything is in place. The painting can be done in a
day or so. - 1 to 6 weeks.
Step four
Final Note:
Now comes the time to make some decisions about the layout of the
kitchen and how it will function.
Leave a suitable amount of time for the contractors to be able to do their
work. Naturally many of these things can overlap in terms of a time frame
but you really can’t do much until the cabinets are available to you.
How many people use the kitchen to cook? Will you entertain a couple
or several family members at the island or will it be used only as a prep
table?
Where will you place the appliances you selected to create a kitchen that
is right for your family chef?
Make these decisions with your designer as there are some rules that if
not followed will leave you disappointed later on.
48
Now you can select cabinet styles, stain colours, paint finish or a
combination of both. Styles range from very traditional to super modern.
Perhaps look at your faucet selection to give you a sense of what you
would really like.
CanadianHomeTrends.com Autumn 2012
Don’t get rid of the old kitchen until you are almost ready to install the
new kitchen otherwise you will be eating out a great deal.
Leave yourself a reasonable amount of time to get it done properly.
The kitchen is going to last you a lot longer than the irritation of the
renovation.

raditionally, bathrooms were a room specifically used for bathing and the
water closet. In the past century, these two rooms came together to form
the North American bathroom. If you look back fifty or sixty years ago
this new combined room was small, efficient and a space designed to get
in and out of as quickly as possible. Now it is a room to luxuriate and enjoy the quiet
spa in your own home. It may have something to do with the “ever connected” quality
of our wireless worlds, but the value of “alone time” has demanded more square
footage for our homes than it did in the past.

The ideal situation is to have a large tub and shower, toilet and vanity
where each has elements to make the experience as relaxing as possible.
Although sometimes having that amount of space just isn’t possible
without compromising size of the surrounding rooms. With this particular
client we had to make the choice between a tub and shower in order to
ensure that at least one of them provided a luxurious look. Naturally that
decision is made together with the homeowner to determine what might
suit her best. A shower was the choice. We used the bulk of the room to
create a large shower with two rain heads, a hand held wand as well as a few
body jets to ease muscle pain. We installed a bench in the shower so that
the relaxing experience of the tub could be somewhat replicated as well as
providing the practical element of being able to sit to wash yourself. The
strip drain installed in this shower allowed us to use a consistently large
format tile on both the floor of the shower and the floor of the bathroom
space, so as not to create division and hence keep the room looking large.
The strip drain is also slightly easier to install as opposed to creating a
funnel shape to drain the water. We also kept in mind that this renovation
might well be the last one that she would do, so we planned for the future
and installed grab bars and other assisting elements; being able to stay in
her home would be more and more important to her as time went forward.
The majority of the colour in the room was neutral. This helps create
the spa-like experience and also allows her to change the colour of the
accessories as the trends and seasons change. The different experiences the
room offers, keeps the space feeling fresh and interesting from a design
perspective for a long time.
The toilet as well as the vanity, while looking to be transitional in style also
had a few elements that would allow the room to work for a long time.
With the cabinets, I like to install the Hettich slides and not only because
they are a very good quality German made product, but the Arci-tech
system can support a great deal of weight (almost 200 pounds) which as
a result, can handle the bottles, creams, powders, shampoo etc. They are
also self cleaning, so the humidity as well as the powders used won’t affect
performance. We also installed a mechanical opening system by Hettich, so
that she could open drawers and cabinets with the bump of a knee. Not
essential currently, but as time marches on, grabbing knobs may become
less pleasant on her hands. We selected an elongated, comfort height toilet
which provides a little more luxury at the moment as well as being a little
less difficult to get up from in the future.
The final result is both a spa-like experience where she quickly gets ready
for a day’s work, or evening out, and also a space where she can unwind
from the same day’s work in peace, quiet and tranquility .
