PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BARBARA KINNEY
March 22 was another enjoyable afternoon of music. Thank you Mission Gold, our
good Jammers and Dixie Dominus. Dixie Dominus played for an hour and were
very warmly received. The youngest player is a eighth grader!! All players did a
great job. These young people are our musical future. We plan to have them back
sometime.
We’ve had one member offer to share the raffle duties. So if we could get one or
two more people to join in, a coordinated effort could be made and no one person
would have to be responsible every month. It would put the raffle back on track.
Please see any board member if you would like to help.
April will be a new delight! An eleven piece band will present music from the Bob
Crosby Bobcat charts. These musicians are tops in the Bay area. You won’t want
to sit down all afternoon. Join us April 26 to hear Jambalaya Swing Band. You’ll
love it!!! Barbara Kinney

the African and Italian campaigns. Back When You Wore A Tulip
in the San Jose area he played trumpet I’ll Take Care Of Your Cares
with the Buddy King big band and on Let Me Call You Sweetheart
bass in combos with Bob Russell in Second Line
those earlier days. Later he played with When You’re Smiling
the first Emperor Norton’s Jazz Band.
He was retired from the Del

LET’S CELEBRATE OUR
JAMMERS
Jammers have been a mainstay of this organization since it’s founding
in 1972. For a period in the earliest days, the Board was selecting a well
known musician, usually from the Hollywood area where they were
plentiful, and flying them here as a guest artist. The local guys got to be
the sidemen for the star, who usually had good drawing power. The star
was then taken to dinner and then put on a plane back to L.A. There
weren’t as many dancers then. As more and more nearby good groups were discovered, the meeting plan was
changed to having a guest band to play three sets, and our jammers play the second and fourth sets. It was set up in our
by-laws that our sessions would run that way, and it still works well.
We owe lots of thanks to Jim Harget who raised the quality level of our jam sets from a very low point when he became
Music Director. His best decision was to get Dick Williams to be leader. They recruited professional men who happened
to be successful musicians, too, to help them lead the lesser skilled volunteer ones with actual practice before playing.
That has produced a level of play that often rivals the quality coming from the paid guest band. So kudos to all you good
people who volunteer for jam sets. We know you play because you love to, and we thank you for your wonderful
sounds. We’re proud to show photos of some of you this month. Dick Williams photo was shown last month, and we’ll
try to get more pictures of other musicians for later issues.

JAMBALAYA
The Jambalaya Swing Band patterns itself from the great Bob Crosby and The Bobcats Orchestra.
The Instrumentation is four Saxophones; three Trumpets; one Trombone; Piano; Bass; and Drums.
The Crosby Orchestra consisted of one additional Trombone. The large dance bands of Jan Garber,
Dick Jurgens, Sammy Kaye, and Russ Morgan, to name a few the 1930’s and 40’s bands, generally
consisted of ten-fourteen players. Crosby started in 1935, but didn’t become a “hit” band until he
released “Big Noise From Winnetka” and additional Dixie selections in 1938. His instrumentation was
centered around a Dixie front line or the piano of Joe Sullivan. Bob fronted the band well into the
1980’s and always was a big draw at The Carnation Stage, and The Plaza Gardens Stage at Disneyland.
This band is regularly listed in the Blowin’ Round the Bay feature always found in this newsletter
