I'm down here in balmy St. Croix, wearing my "other hat" - helping to keep leatherback sea turtles alive and well and producing as many baby leatherbacks as they can. I've been involved in research and conservation of sea turtles for years now, and this project means a great deal to me. However, worlds will collide, and when one of my Field Leaders got wind of my belly dance history, he insisted that I "show them some moves". So we're on the beach in the moonlight, resting in between patrols looking for nesting leatherbacks. The only music is the crashing of the waves (which as it turned out provided the perfect rythm) . I'm in my field gear - salt-encrusted windpants and a tee shirt demonstrating shimmies, figure-S's and rib cage circles. My avid pupils are two guys who are doing their level best to convince their bodies to move in ways they never thought they could, and doing quite well, actually. Ironically, the two women in the group preferred to provide encouragement from their reclining positions in the sand. As we all "loosened up", we were able to dance more freely and take advantage of our surroudings, and even the women couldn't resist joining in for some shoulder shimmies. Anyway, the point of this message is to encourage you to share your talent whenever you get the chance, and whenever possible experience the dance in settings you might not normally experience. I know many of you have already discovered the sheer pleasure of dancing in wide open spaces, in forests, on beaches, in the desert - anywhere you find nature as a stage and waves, wind and birdsong as your music. And for those who haven't- do! It will lend a whole new dimension to your dance and to your lives. 'Donna 'Oullon ( 4 c: THE.. FAFYR.U5 June 2000 J ( THE.. All you teachers please take note: we are going back to the old format for the Teacher Listing. Please email or snail mail to me all class dates, class types and class times. Please do not be alarmed at what you see for this month's listing. I was merely going by an old list of what was taught. I needed to be able to do what I could for everyone to start off. Please be as comprehensive as possible when updating your class information to be able to use the more extensive format. (619) 453-0811 2) ) fi.-v~1·et1ess By Patti Pietron Hello! This is my third article for the Papyrus. I love writing and hope you ' re finding the infomation fun and educational. In this article I'd like to touch upon our energetic nature. We human beings are electromagnetic in nature. Our world and ourselves are made up of molecules and atoms. When it comes down to basics, we relate to everything in our universe on an energetic level. That feeling you have when you ')ust click" wiht a person or place you ' ve never experienced before. Your frequency matches, there's a connection . A place that regenerates you, or a place that seems to drain you. Sensing another person in the room without seeing or hearing them, feeling "good or bad vibes". These are all energetic forms of communication. Our energetic field encompass our body and extends out from it. Our aura (energy field) interacts with the energy fields of plants, animals, places, and things. To feel this energy field hold your hands rapidly about 30 times. Slowly begin to move your palms toward each other. As our palms get closer, you'll feel a slight tingle and then a resistance, like a ball is beetween your hands. This is energy. To see this energy, hold your hands so that the tips of your fingers point toward each other about an inch and a half apart. Hold your hands in front of your face at a distance of about eighteen inches. Using a white wall, or white background relax your eyes and gaze at the space between your fingertips . Move your fingertips closer, then further apart. What do you see? Usually people see what appears to be a haze, kind of like a heat wave. This colorless to bluish layer is the first of the seven layers of your aura. It's called the etheric body. To observe this field around plants, I find trees the easiest. Look at the top of a tree and relax your gaze. Soon, out of the corner of your eyes you'll see the same kind of colorlesss to bluish heat wave. You'll notice as soon as you try to look directly at the aura, it disappears. It takes some practice but it's quite special when you succeed! By seeing and feeling this energy, you soon realize that everything is swimming in it. We are all connected through this energetic sea. Each thought or action is like a pebble tossed into a pond, the ripples spreading out to touch even the furthest shores our energy travels to, we know it reaches far and wide. what a good reason for maintaining positive thoughts and loving actions! :3;€ ( 22 THE..FAFYRU5 June 2000 ~J ( .. June 2000 THE.. FAFYRU5 7 ) c.,A-~eldt~ 'l~tc,,·5 t7e 'le~c7e,·5 By Marula In keeping with their mi ssion statement, San Diego's Middle Eastern Dance Teacher's Association sponsored a two-hour workshop featuring Angelika. This was the first workshop offered in the effort to support, educate, amalgamate and inspire active instructors. Angelika graciously drove from Costa Mesa to Cuyamaca College and tutored the "Teacher's Workshop" at a generous discount. The workshop itself was paid for from the proceeds of the last "Student Concert." In my never-to-be humble opinion; what a fabulous , win/win gesture. Not only do the students benefit from the goals and experiences of the concert, but also the teacher's skills are enhanced; and in turn, the student receives improved instruction. The workshop itself consisted of a one-hour lecture and one hour of movement. The lecture covered teaching techniques, terminology, history, structuring your class and of course, many questions and answers . I found this hour to be humbling, inspiring, and full of valuable information. "Humbling?" You ask. Yes, because I found out that a teacher is obligated to his/her students to continue to learn and aspire to present a full spectrum of Middle Eastern dance. (Well, back to the workshops for me!) Congratulations to the Middle Eastern Dance Teachers Association on a job well done! SAMEDA performer's ~irectoru c~ (all are in the 619 area, unless noted) DANCERS.. She wanted her nonprofessional life kept out of the public eye, including her two year marriage to businessman, Doron Ashkenazi. However, her private life only fueled Israel's curiosity, and she made headlines when in 1987, she survived a small plane crash. Incidentally after that, Ofra celebrated February 3, the day of the crash, as a second birthday. In mid February of 2000, for thirteen days of her hospital stay, faithful fans gathered outside waiting to hear of her recovery. Ofra died in Tel Aviv's hospital on February 23, 2000. They reported that she died from a massive organ failure . They refused to say what caused this organ failure, only commenting that this was Ofra 's wish. There has been a lot of mystery and rumor surrounding Ofra's illness at the time she died. FAFYRUS I 9 ) (/Vl,.,..,,w,,,.f to Of,-,,. 1-/,,.z,,. by Titanya Monique Dahlin "Hush now my baby, be still love don't cry, Sleep as you ' re rocked by life ' s stream Dream and remember my last lullaby, So I'll be with you when you dream ... River, oh river, flow gently for me, Such precious cargo you bear Do you know somewhere we can be free? River, deliver us there." These poignant words were perhaps Ofra Haza ' s last lullaby that we heard. Ofra sang the voice of Moses' mother in The Prince of Egypt. This angelic songstress was just starting to be recognized in American music for her incredible talent, though many ofus in the Middle Eastern world of music already danced to her words and praised her soulful voice. Sadly for the world, Ofra died on Wednesday, February 23, at the age of 41. Ofra Haza was born in Israel into a Jewish-Yemenite family. She was the youngest of8 other brothers and sisters. Her family was financially poor, but musically rich in traditional culture and history. Her mother would sing with Ofra when she was little, which later, Ofra attributed to her own talent and success. At age 12, Ofra joined a theatre group in her little village of Tel Aviv Hatikvah. The founder of the group, Bezalel Aloni, immediately recognized her shining talent. From then on, he became her manager and remained loyal until the day she died. With the encouragement ofBezalel, Ofra accepted more opportunities and by the time she was 19, her solo career was on its way. In 1979, she became a "bubblegum sensation" with her first pop hit, The Tart 's Song singing out about everything funny, flirtatious, consumerist. For Israel, her lyrics were about everything a young woman was not supposed to be. "I wanna shout out loud", I'm a Tart!, and Israeli teenagers went wild. I can imagine, at the time that it was the equivalent to Madonna's like a Virgin . Israel ' s radio pop music editor, Benny Duddkevitch, said ofOfra, "she was Israel's first female pop success." Later in her career, she delved into her parent's ethnic roots to consolidate a more "Israel" sound. She began blending Yemenite Jewish poetry to a techno &O's beat. In 1985, she released Yemenite Songs . On the front of the cover, you can see Ofra in full Yemenite wedding apparel. The album became an instant success in Israel. The song, Im Nin Alu which expanded a devotional poem by 17th century rabbi Shalom Shabazi into a modem love song, reached # 1 in the German charts for nine straight weeks, and # I in the European charts for two weeks. As most of you know, Dondi is also a professional actress (with more than 150 television commercials - among other things -to her credit!) She describes herself as a really happy person. I told her that that quality was abundantly evident in her performance of "Little Egypt" in February's One Enchanted Evening program! But even really happy people have unhappy times. She shared a tip she learned in acting: Just before the performance, sit down and think back to a time when you were really, really happy. The song, Im Nin Alu which expanded a devotional poem by 17th century rabbi Shalom Shabazi into a modem love song, reached # 1 in the German charts for nine straight weeks, and # I in the European charts for two weeks. c- 20 Tt,t_ FAFYR.U5 June 2000 C ) J~~~ 2000 Tt,E_ FAFYR.U5 9 ) Her next album, Shaday, continued her international success selling over I million copies worldwide. She received The New Music Award for The International Album of the Year in 1989. She launched a sold out tour through the U.S., Canada, and Japan. Continuing to win outstanding awards, she released her second album, Kirya, in 1992. She was nominated for the Grammy Awards for the best album in the World Beat category. [::: • Throughout her career, Ofra performed with such musicians as Paula Abdul and Sisters ofMercy. She sang in movie soundtracks such as Colors, The Governess, and The Prince ofEgypt. She performed in Oslo when Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Vasser Arafat won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994. (Well, back to the workshops for me!) (619) 453-0811 2) ) fi.-v~1·et1ess By Patti Pietron Hello! :3;€ ( 24 THE_ FAFYR.U5 June 2000 ) ( june THE. 'Donna 'Oullon ( THE.
