Lab simulation of tribological materials characteristics with
dynamic excitation
DynaMaTe is a preventive
testing system for tribological
issues. The target is to plot
the dynamic response of
flexible systems to dynamic
excitation along 2 axes.

early stage in the laboratory
and combinations of such
materials avoided. This saves
the costs of expensive rework
or warranty claims and the
acoustic quality of the product
can be improved.
Innovative motor technology
Innovative motor solutions
make it possible to obtain
real-life relative movement
profiles between two parts at
a high dynamic level with this
tester. Simulations can be
carried out in 2 or more

coordinate axes. The
movements
can
be
synchronized. The movement
profiles can be accelerated
and oscillating and especially
stochastic
forms of
movement such as, e.g., the
relative movement of two
parts in a car driving on
cobblestone pavement at 30
km/h.

Modular design for varied application
One axis traverses on a very
long path and can simulate
high strokes such as, e.g., of
a power window, sliding roof
or blind. Another function of
this axis is to move to several
measuring or application
stations.
The other axis is shorter and,
in addition to path control,
also has force control. If
needed, this allows dynamic
variations of the normal force.
Due to the modular design of
the rig, other parameters,
e.g., surface temperatures,
surface
topography,

appearance) and the
application of stress factors,
e.g., heating, dirt, moisture
are possible without changing
the setup of the test
materials.

Tribological examination at
the seal/glass contact
surface
The image shows 3 mm

exposed to sine excitation at
7 Hz. The friction values in the
transversal and normal

Force response of the seal to
sinusoidal relative movement

seen. Besides, stick-slip is
found and the normal force
direction is also excited due
to the anisotropy of the seal.
Abrasion and ageing studies

profiles
The movement profiles on the
road are more of stochastic
nature. These profiles are
important for studies of
contact points as well as
abrasion and ageing because
they reflect the real load
collectives. The illustration on
the right shows a stochastic
exc itati on o f 2 axes
simultaneously and the
response of the elastic
system in form of frictional
forces.

To improve our understanding
of the response of a flexible
system to dynamic excitation,
the definition of material
characteristics can be helpful.
DynaMaTe can be used to
measure the dynamic thrust
tensor.
DynaMaTe system setup
Optional camera system with integrated
and adjustable illumination
DynaMaTe is of modular
design. It consists of a solid
steel frame, horizontal granite
table for the motors and
additional measuring and
application stations, vertical
granite table for the long
moving axis. The long motor is
always of dynamic design. The
short axis can optionally be
fitted with a linear motor or a
spindle-powered motor only
for infeed (no dynamics). The
motors are available for room
temperature or climate
vers i on. Ot h er s ys t em
components include the tribo
measuring head for
measuring friction forces
along 2 axes, a control
cabinet in which the
electronic measuring
equipment and the measuring
cables are mounted and a PC
with all required interface
cards and control software,
measuring software for
setting the parameters for the
measurement, display and
storage of data. The test rig is
protected against accident by
a transparent enclosure. The
operation software uses
simple machine language;
