In 1946 WHKP signed on the air, and also in 1946 the Apple Festival was born. WHKP is pleased to be one of the major sponsors of this year’s event. WHKP also salutes our apple growers. This hasn’t been the easiest year to grow apples. Several hail storms came through our Richard Rhodes area and some growers lost part of their crop. The good news is the demand for apples is way up. One of our local growers told me that loose apples in the box are bringing $11 a bushel - that’s a great price! WHKP encourages you to visit one of our growers and buy lots of fresh Henderson County apples. We have worked hard providing you all the information you need for this year’s festival. This handy guide contains all the important events. We also encourage you to stay tuned to #1 WHKP for up to the minute information on events. Here in WHKP’s 65th birthday year we are pleased to lead all radio stations in listenership in or coming in to Henderson County. Thanks for listening and make plans now to attend our open house Sunday October 23rd. 4 • WHKP’s 2011 Apple Festival Guide www.whkp.com 2011 Apple Festival Events • Friday, September 2 Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast 7:00-10:00am $6.00 First Baptist Church Please use 4th Avenue entrance Sponsor: Kiwanis Club of Hendersonville 828.697.4267 49th Annual Opportunity Hours Arts & Crafts Fair 9:00am-5:00pm FREE Opportunity House on Asheville Highway 828.692.0575 See advertisement on page 8 Apple Recipe Contest 8:30am-1:00pm FREE First Citizens Bank Plaza Main Street & 6th Avenue Sponsor: NC Coop Extension & NCAF 828.697.4891 Festival Opening Ceremony 10:00am FREE Historic Courthouse Main Street & 1st Avenue Sponsor: NC Apple Festival Apple Orchard Tour (One Tour Only) 9:00am-12:30pm $8.00 Advanced registration required Meet at County Extension Office-Jackson Park Sponsor: NC Coop Extension & NCAF 828.697.4891 Downtown Hendersonville Sidewalk Sales 10:00am-5:00pm FREE Main Street & surrounding Avenues Sponsor: City of Hendersonville 828.233.3216 Friday’s events continue on page 6 Save $1250 36 months instant rebate on qualifying system & equipment no interest financing See your participating independent Trane dealer for complete program eligibility, dates, details and restrictions. “In business for your comfort” 211 Hillview Blvd • Hendersonville, NC 28792 828.697.5255 www.horizonheatac.com License # NC 30744 www.whkp.com WHKP’s 2011 Apple Festival Guide • 5 LYDA FARMS Fresh vegetables & crisp, tasty apples right at the roadside!
