Young readers discover new ways of making art by being introduced to eighteen great artists, learning about the methods, materials, and ideas that made up their masterpieces, and how these can be applied to one’s own creations. Grouped into sections by artist, each one unfolds a series of creative projects in drawing, painting, printing, and collage based on the artist’s own techniques. At the end of the book is a series of biographies about each artist providing the background on how they became artistic geniuses. Marion Deuchars is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning illustrator. This highly illustrated book features not only 20 of the artist’s major works, but in stunning original color illustrations portrays the events of his life and the circle of friends and associates with whom he formed a louche, brazen gang that cut open the belly of the old propriety. The major periods of Bacon’s life on the edge, such as his time spent in Berlin, Paris, and the seedy milieu of post-war London, are portrayed, along with the influential figures, such as Peter Lacey and George Dyer, who shaped both his personal life and his art. Kitty Hauser is the author of Stanley Spencer, Shadow Sites: Photography, Archaeology and The British Landscape 1927–1955 and Bloody Old Britain. She has written for the Burlington Magazine, the New Left Review and the London Review of Books. After a research fellowship at Cambridge University, she taught at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art and the London College of Fashion, and now lives in Sydney where she writes a regular column for The Australian. Christina Christoforou is a London-based illustrator and artist. She started her career as an art director in Greece before relocating to London, where in 2007 she gained an MA at Camberwell College of Arts. Since then, she has produced a poster of rock star hairstyles and was commissioned by the New York Times to draw hair portraits of the Presidents and First Ladies. • The story and work of this great artist is brought to life through specially commissioned illustrations • Includes key works by the artist • Text and illustrations are meticulously researched to ensure historical accuracy • Art history made visual and accessible 978 1 78067 185 7 50 color illustrations 80 pages • 9 x 6 ¾ in US$15.95 PLC • Art Sept 2014 I S B N 978-1-78067-185-7 0 1 5 9 5 9 4 Forthcoming Titles 781780 671857 This is Gauguin George Roddam, illustrated by Sława Harasymowicz Paul Gauguin created some of the most advanced art in a brilliant generation of artists – all of whom struggled against the stifling conformity of the late 19th century’s artistic mainstream. He created paintings whose radically simplified lines and colors echoed the unsophisticated art of the rustic and primitive cultures he loved. After his famously disastrous stay with Vincent van Gogh in southern France, Gauguin escaped European civilization for the Polynesian islands. Immersing himself in the culture, he produced a series of radiant canvases and powerful sculptures – his last great works. From his childhood in Peru to his experiences in Tahiti, the story of Gauguin’s life is recounted in authoritative text by an expert on the PostImpressionists and powerful imagery by an awardwinning illustrator. George Roddam has taught art history at universities in the UK and US. His research focuses primarily on European modernisms. He lives in southeast England with his wife and two sons. Sława Harasymowicz is a Polish artist based in London. Following the release of the graphic novel The Wolf Man, she had a solo exhibition at The Freud Museum, London. She was a member of the V&A Award’s jury in 2010. • The story and work of this great artist is brought to life through specially commissioned illustrations • Includes key works by the artist • Text and illustrations are meticulously researched to ensure historical accuracy • Art history made visual and accessible 978 1 78067 189 5 50 color illustrations 80 pages • 9 x 6 ¾ in US$15.95 HC • Art Aug 2014 I S B N 978-1-78067-189-5 0 1 5 9 5 9 781780 671895 Also available: This is Warhol This is Dalí This is Pollock 978 1 78067 014 0 US$15.95 HC 978 1 78067 109 3 US$15.95 HC 978 1 78067 346 2 US$15.95 HC Catherine Ingram Catherine Ingram Catherine Ingram Forthcoming Titles 5 My Bubble Writer Christmas Book Linda Scott Have yourself a merry Bubble Writer Christmas with this fantastic book! Fully illustrated with images of early computing equipment and the inside story of the online world’s movers and shakers, the book explains the origins of the Web’s key technologies, such as hypertext and mark-up language, the social ideas that underlie its networks, such as open source, and creative commons, and key moments in its development, such as the movement to broadband and the Dotcom Crash. Later ideas look at the origins of social networking and the latest developments on the Web, such as The Cloud and the Semantic Web. Following the design of the previous titles in the series, this book will be in a new, smaller format. It provides an informed and fascinating illustrated history of our most used and fastestdeveloping technology. It is also a history of great families, seen as part of the houses they created, where their descendants, in many cases, still live today. The original photographs show the unexpected as well as the familiar – the private rooms and the servants’ quarters as well as the grand exteriors and state rooms, the gardens and noble landscapes. They include some of the most splendid examples of English art and architecture, from awe-inspiring medieval stone to the beauties of the English Renaissance, the classical grandeur of the eighteenth century, and the excesses of the High Victorian taste; illustrating the work of Inigo Jones, John Vanbrugh, Nicholas Hawksmoor, Thomas Chippendale, William Kent, Robert Adam, and Lancelot “Capability” Brown. Full of memorable characters and anecdotal insight, this book is a glorious tribute to what Evelyn Waugh called “our chief national artistic achievement.” Hugh Montgomery-Massingberd began writing about country houses and their owners in the 1960s. The editor of an index covering some 10,000 houses in the British Isles, he was a prolific writer of books and magazine articles. He died in 2007. Christopher Simon Sykes specializes in photographing architecture and interiors. With several books to his name, his photographs have also appeared in Vogue, Vanity Fair, House and Garden, and The World of Interiors. The Big House, a biography of Sledmere, his family’s house in Yorkshire, was published in 2013. • Refreshingly informal and anecdotal text details the history of the houses and of the people who built and lived in them • All illustrations specially photographed by renowned photographer • Features Highclere Castle, the real-life Downton Abbey 978 1 78067 232 8 420 color illustrations 424 pages • 12¼ x 10½ in US$65.00 HC • Architecture Aug 2014 I S B N 978-1-78067-232-8 06500 9 22 Forthcoming Titles 781780 672328 Editorial Design Digital and Print Cath Caldwell and Yolanda Zappaterra Editorial Design: Digital and Print is a comprehensive guide to the traditional and digital skills that a designer will need for a future career in visual journalism today – the design of magazines and newspapers for a wide variety of markets. Where does all this photographic activity leave the artist-photographer? Post-Photography tries to answer that question by investigating the exciting new language of photographic image-making that is emerging in the digital age of anything-is-possible and everythinghas-been-done-before. Found imagery has become increasingly important in post-photographic practice, with the internet serving as a laboratory for a major kind of image-making experimentation. But artists also continue to create entirely original works using avant-garde techniques drawn from both the digital and analogue eras. This book is split into five sections – Something Borrowed, Something New; Layers of Reality; All the World Is Staged; Hand and Eye; and PostPhotojournalism – which cover the key strategies adopted by 50 of the most exciting and innovative international artist-photographers of the 21st century. Robert Shore is the editor of the visual-arts quarterly Elephant and was previously deputy editor at Art Review magazine. As an arts journalist he has contributed to the Sunday Times, the Guardian, and Metro. He is also the author of 10 Principles of Advertising and Bang in the Middle. • Focuses on 50 of the most innovative, contemporary artist-photographers from around the world • Examines key strategies employed by these artist-photographers • Richly illustrated with 300 photographs 978 1 78067 228 1 300 color illustrations 272 pages • 11 1 ∕ 8 x 8 5∕ 8 in US$40.00 HC • Photography Sept 2014 I S B N 978-1-78067-228-1 04000 9 781780 672281 Also available: Walk the Line A Brush with the Real Marc Valli and Marc Valli and Margherita Dessanay The Art of Drawing Ana Ibarra 978 1 78067 110 9 US$40.00 HC • 2013 24 Forthcoming Titles Figurative Painting Today 978 1 78067 283 0 US$40.00 HC • 2014 Ways of Looking How to Experience Contemporary Art Ossian Ward Art has changed. Those reassuringly familiar styles and movements that characterized art production prior to the twenty-first century have all vanished. Traditional artistic media no longer do what we expect of them. This book provides a straightforward, six-step program for understanding contemporary art based on the concept of the tabula rasa – a clean slate and a fresh mind. Since artists increasingly work across traditional media and genres, the author has also developed an alternative classification system – Art as Entertainment, Art as Confrontation, Art as Joke – designed to help make sense of otherwise obscureseeming works. Ways of Looking transforms a potentially intimidating encounter with cutting-edge contemporary art into a dramatic, sensually rewarding, and thought-provoking experience. Ossian Ward is Head of Content at the Lisson Gallery. But how do you start? How much should you do? How do you use that research? Fashion Design Research is designed to answer these questions and demystify the process for students. Illustrated throughout with inspirational photographs and images of good practice within student sketchbooks, the book begins with the basics of primary and secondary research sources and shows students how and where to gather information. Chapters on market, fabric, and color research follow before the final chapter shows how to gather all the information together, understand it, and use it in a process known as triangulation. Additionally, case studies from a wide range of international designers showcase different working methods. By offering a clear approach to research for fashion design, this book will inspire students to embrace an activity that is both fun and fruitful. Ezinma Mbonu is currently Senior Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Fashion course at UCA Epsom, UK.
