D. 1-3-1862 41 6 In the 33rd year of His Age. He was born in Wilkesboro, lived most of his time in N. and S. C. While a citizen of S.C. he was for two years a volunteer in the Mexican War. The State of S.C. and the City of Charleston each presented him a medal as memorials of good conduct and gallant service during the war. Though a volunteer in the service of his country at the time of his death, by that providence which directs the steps of good men so that hone of them are permitted to slide, he met death in the bosom of his family where his passage to the tomb was smoothed by all that friendship and affection could dictate. He has left a devoted companion and many friends to mourn over their irreparable loss. Agnes Watts, Gage C. The grave of the patriot is often the birthplace of civil liberty and national independence. This grave should remind all who look upon it of this impressive truth.
