Musical Moments at St Martin’s
St Martin’s was host to a real treat in May when
Richard Marsden gave an organ concert to raise money
for Christian Aid. My favourite piece was ‘Cuckoo
Capriccio’ by Johann Caspar Kerll which started with
the sound of one distant cuckoo; before long, there
was a whole flock of them, calling and swirling through
the music (now a new addition to my iPod!) To add the
excitement and raise extra cash, Richard had set
himself challenge of playing Widor’s Toccata in F
without music or mistakes. If you don’t know the piece,
it is very fast and very twiddly and he played it with
great flair followed by rapturous applause. It was
fantastic to hear the organ played so skillfully from the
quiet Gabriel’s Oboe by Enrico Morricone to the
traditional, booming Bach’s Prelude in C.
Many thanks, Richard, sorry we haven’t got enough
space to mention all the pieces you played.
Congratulations on raising £719 for Christian Aid,
giving vital support to the poorest in the world.
A Big Thank You to Mrs Pat Sands
Pat will finish her work for Christians Against Poverty (CAP) at the end of this year. As part of that organisation
she has helped many people solve their debt problems and we record our thanks to her for her tireless work.
Thanks are also due to all those who have assisted Pat in any way with this valuable work.

Jane’s Priesting 4th July 2015
Standing at the entrance of Southwell Minster, the time 5pm
on a sunny Saturday in July, my fellow curates around me,
Training Incumbents, Arch Deacons and Bishops behind me,
the Cross ahead of me.
The moment had arrived; the organ raised its resounding
voice, the congregation lifted theirs too and together we
sang:
“Praise to the Lord the Almighty, the King of creation my
soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation: Come ye
who hear, Brothers and sisters draw near, Praise him in glad
adoration.”
Walking up the aisle, I could not have been more ready than I
was right there, to declare before all, my promise and
obedience to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, to
serve as priest, in Sherwood, in the diocese of Southwell and
Nottingham.
The opening verse of the above hymn says everything,
Praise to the Almighty King of heaven and earth, for he
created and creates, praise him for he restores and saves,
come brothers and sisters, those who hear the good news,
praise and adore the King.
My ordination as Priest marked the end of a 7 year journey of
discovery and change, the discovery of God’s call on my life
and change that inevitably occurs when you dare to tread a
new path with Jesus Christ. Jesus said to his disciples,
“Follow me!”
Sometimes that following leads you to a life you never
imagined, every time it leads to truth in the present, hope in
the future and to the promise of eternal life in Christ.
God’s love for us is absolute, and there is no love like it, it is a love that gives everything, even to the depths of
death on a cross through Jesus Christ. Faith has led me to a life I did not imagine, the life of a priest, one journey
ends and the new one begins, the future is bright — its light is Christ.
