written up by George Shelvocke (d.1728) describing time as captain o f the privateer
Speedwell, 1 3 February 1719-12 November 1721. The ship was fitted out to cruise
against the Spanish, sailed to the Pacific and attacked Spanish shipping along the
South American coast. A n account o f the voyage was published as A Voyage round

I V s librarian and received by Rear A d m i r a l W i l l i a m Parry (1790-1855) as
Hydrographer at some date between 1828 and 1829. Rear A d m i r a l Francis Beaufort
(1774-1857) when Hydrographer added extra material on the versos o f the inventory,
and marked up those items not required which could be passed to the British Museum;
the marks are thought to date from 1844, the year o f the transfer. It also marks those
items the Admiralty would retain on the terms o f George I V s original transfer.

Hydrographer, relating to the Zambesi expedition o f H M S Pioneer, 1861-1863. The
ship was sent to D a v i d Livingstone (1813-1873) searching for a river route to Lake
Nyasa from the sea. The collection consists o f files o f incoming letters and reports
1857-1863 covering all aspects o f the expedition: construction, fitting out,
establishment o f Pioneer, instructions to officers on expedition, and 60 letters from

often the senior naval officer and only official British representative. This was a
period o f struggles within and between these countries with some groups seeking
independence from Spain and others remaining loyal; Britain was neutral, and many
o f the letters relate to the N a v y ' s attempts to protect British trading rights.

The Board was appointed i n January 1805 b y the Pitt Ministry, and confusingly its existence overlapped with the Commission on Irregularities appointed b y the preceding ministry, which also considered areas o f naval administration. The Board had five members; Sir Charles Middleton L o r d Barham (d. 1813), John Fordyce, A d m i r a l Sir Roger Curtis (d.1816), A d m i r a l Sir W i l l i a m Domett (1754-1828), Serle Ambrose (d.1812), while Sir John Briggs (1781-1865) was Secretary and has been credited with much o f the authorship o f the reports. MSS 252. [Papers o f John Fisher]
A collection o f 25 bound volumes o f office papers relating to the career o f A d m i r a l o f
the Fleet John Fisher, Baron Kilverstone (1841-1920), 1900-1917. These principally
cover his reforms i n naval administration and ship design as First Sea L o r d 1904
1910, but some relate to his period as First L o r d 1914-1915 and as Chairman o f the
Board o f Invention and Research 1915. The volumes have become known as 'the
Fisher Papers', but are more accurately an artificial collection o f papers assembled
subsequently from other members o f the Admiralty Board or colleagues. M a n y o f the
papers were written b y or at the instigation o f Fisher and are accompanied b y his
letters, but others more generally reflect the work o f the Admiralty i n this period.
Aside from Fisher, sources are papers o f 3 First Lords o f the Admiralty: W i l l i a m
Palmer, Earl o f Selborne (1859-1942), Frederick Campbell, Earl Cawdor (1847
1911), Edward Marjoribanks Lord Tweedmouth (1849-1909), and Captain C . N .

Bannerman's Liberal administration, December 1905 - A p r i l 1908. The great
majority o f items are private letters received b y him, but the collection also includes
some copies o f his replies and notes on the correspondence. The collection consists o f
series o f letters received i n each year from; other members o f the Cabinet, from
Admiral o f the Fleet Sir John Fisher (1841-1920) as First Sea Lord, from other
members o f the Admiralty Board, from Admiralty officials, from A d m i r a l L o r d
Charles Beresford (1846-1919), from other flag officers, from former First Lords,
from members o f the House o f Lords, from M P s and from miscellaneous
correspondents. The correspondence appears to have been assembled b y Sir Vincent
Baddeley (1874-1961) (see MSS 264) who was Private Secretary to Tweedmouth, and
the collection also contains a separate series o f letters to h i m b y Fisher.
It includes 81 letters from Fisher (only a small number o f which are published i n
Arthur Marder (ed.), Fear G o d and Dread Nought; the correspondence o f A d m i r a l o f
the Fleet Lord Fisher o f Kilverstone, v o l II 1904-1914, 1956), 83 from Beresford, and
other significant collections from; Sir Edward Grey (1862-1933) as Foreign Secretary,
Herbert Asquith (1852-1928) as Chancellor o f the Exchequer, Rear-Admiral
Hedworth Lambton (1856-1929), Admiral Sir Gerard N o e l (1845-1919), V i c e

A volume which binds together miscellaneous papers produced as evidence at the
court martial o f Admiral John B y n g (1704-1757). In M a r c h 1756 B y n g was ordered
to take a squadron to the Mediterranean with instructions which included the defence
o f Minorca, but on arrival found that most o f the island was already taken by the
French and the British fortress besieged. O n 2 0 M a y he fought an inconclusive

action with a French squadron, and afterwards withdrew, deciding he had insufficient
force to defend the island. H e was found guilty b y court martial 2 7 January 1757, o f
neglect o f duty, and was shot 14 March. M a n y o f the papers are contemporary
copies and include: lists o f ships, sketches and accounts o f the action, correspondence,

had accepted a command i n the Russian N a v y during its war with Turkey. The

o f Russia, or her representatives, and offers advice on the administration o f her navy.

A collection o f 5 boxes o f papers relating to the life and service o f A d m i r a l Sir John
Jervis, Earl St. Vincent (1735-1823), 1756-1822. The collection consists o f the
papers collected and copied from many different sources b y Jedediah Stephen Tucker,
and used to produce his Memoirs o f the Admiral the Right Honourable the Earl o f St.
Vincent, 2 vols, London, 1844. H i s principal source was the papers assembled b y his
father Benjamin Tucker (1762-1829) who had a close relationship with St. Vincent
starting from January 1798 as his Purser on H M S London. Later i n that year he
served as his secretary, and when St. Vincent was appointed First L o r d o f the
Admiralty, Tucker served as one o f the Commissioners o f the Navy, and then briefly
i n 1804 and 1806-1807 as Second Secretary to the Admiralty.
Tucker assembled papers from a range o f people with connections to St. Vincent so
the collection includes papers from; his brother Joseph Tucker later joint Surveyor o f
the Navy, Surgeon A n d r e w Baird, St. Vincent's sister and nephew, and A d m i r a l o f the
Fleet W i l l i a m Parker (1781-1866), the son o f George Parker who was cousin to St.
Vincent. W i l l i a m Parker is responsible for the copies o f many o f the letters b y St.
Vincent, and the collection includes correspondence between Jedediah Tucker and
Parker relating to the publication o f Memoirs ..., as well as their later personal
correspondence. M a n y o f those letters which were published by Tucker were often
edited, or had names and other details omitted because individuals were still alive.

MSS 265. fPapers o f Alfred Dewar]
A collection o f 10 boxes o f the papers o f Captain Alfred Dewar (d. 1969). Dewar
joined the N a v y as cadet i n 1890, Lieutenant i n 1897 and served until 1906. H e then
held no more commissions and undertook naval research into the First Dutch War.
He was recalled to active service i n 1914, worked at the Naval Intelligence Division at
the Admiralty from August 1917. Post-war he worked on official staff narratives o f
operations, and from 1926-1948 he was Head o f the Historical Section. A founder
member o f the Naval Review (1912), he was one o f the group o f young officers who
urged the need for a properly trained naval staff and o f the value o f the study o f naval
history. The papers reflect his historical research and work on the Admiralty staff.

T w o volumes compiled as a record o f changes i n rates o f pay o f different officers i n
the Navy, 1796-c. 1879. These were compiled as a result o f an Admiralty Board
decision i n 1840, but were updated to c. 1879. They were kept as works o f reference,
one i n the Wages Office, one i n the Estimate Division, and may vary slightly i n their
amendments. Previously numbered as Da060, Da091.

Manuscript volume o f 6 plans o f the naval dockyards at Deptford, W o o l w i c h ,
Chatham, Sheerness, Portsmouth and Plymouth, dated at the N a v y Office 1 3 January
1813. These plans sketch the outline o f the yards, but show i n detail only the docks
and slips with comments on their suitability for ships o f different rates. 310mm x

A box o f miscellaneous loose signal codes, mostly proofs or copies prepared at
Admiralty Office, c. 1796-1868. Principally supplements to the standard code
covering signals for communication between H M ships and; coastal stations, Post
Office packets, Customs, cutters, agents at Lloyds, foreign ships, etc. Further private
signals for East India ships, anti-slavery patrols off West Africa [1840s] and captured
foreign codes. Most c. 1808-1815. Transfer from ' M . Branch' 1931.

list has headings for ship names, rate, guns, and Observations' which can include
