Although the secular world has put Christmas behind us and the decorations are already visible for Valentine’s Day, we here in our churches are still celebrating the joy of the Christmas Season and no other day, after Christmas Day, speaks to us more about Christmas than today’s feast of the Epiphany. As you all know, the Magi presented their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ Child after they made their long journey from the East following a star. What a beautiful image this is for all of us, that the Magi had to make a sacrifice to present their gifts. Often to give a gift entails making a sacrifice, and your gifts to your parish are a sacrificial offering to the church, the body of Christ. To help make this Christmas Season so wonderful here at Immaculate, many people offered their gifts of time, talent, and treasure, and sacrificed their time to make an offering to the Lord. Many thanks to all who offered their gifts, especially to our Children’s Choirs and Chancel Choir for their gifts of their incredible voices and talents. Special thanks to Preston Dibble, Marcie Alexander, Chris Araya, Joe Mulford for their long hours of hard work. Thanks to Kristin Roney and all who volunteered in making our Breakfast with Santa such a joy filled event. A special shout out to our Knights of Columbus for cooking the pancakes, Santa really enjoyed them! To all our Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Altar Servers, Cantors, Ushers, and all who helped in any way, thank you! The giving of your time and talent is truly appreciated by all. As we begin this new year of 2016, may God continue to fill you with his blessings and may he continue to bless our wonderful parish of the Immaculate Conception. Sincerely in the Lord, Fr. Joe M A R Y’s Mary’s Pantry needs your Help Mary’s Pantry (our emergency food outreach) is in short supply of the following items: cold cereal, pasta, tuna, canned chicken, peanut butter and jelly (16 oz. or smaller). Stewardship Reflection: The Epiphany of the Lord —January 3, 2016— “...the Gentiles are co-heirs, members of the same body, and co-partners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel.” —Ephesians 3:6 Today we celebrate that Christ came to all of us, not just the Hebrews. He made us all one body with Him. We were all given different gifts; we all have different yet equally valuable roles to play in the Body of Christ. Ask God how He wants you to use your gifts so that we may all “be one” in this Year of Mercy. We have come to worship the King! Thank you to all who came out to assist with our Homeless Sandwich Run on Dec. 13th! For $600 worth of supplies (paid for by your private donations after Masses a few weeks ago), the Young Adults were able to coordinate a group of almost 20 volunteers who made over 300 meals that were immediately delivered to the homeless residents’ of Newark Penn Station. Each lunch contained a sandwich with almost ½ pound of meat, snacks, dessert, and a bottled water. We were also able to use our smartphones and connect some souls in special need with local Catholic shelters in Newark! With the colder months ahead, and more funds leftover from your donations, we’ll be looking to continue this outreach in the weeks to come. Be on the lookout for the next announcement if you’d like to participate, or feel free to email us at [email protected] or call/text (703) 434-2512 On behalf of the parish I would like to offer profound thanks to the nearly 75 parishioners who were part of music ministry on Christmas Eve, representing approximately 55 families of the parish community!! In the 11 Christmases that I have served this parish, this is far and away the greatest participation in parish music ministry at any one time. This is in no small part due to the influence of Kristin Roney, our new Asst. Director of Music who joined the parish staff last summer! These parishioners, from Kindergarten up through … ‘older than Kindergarten,’ have spent months in preparation to add beauty and solemnity to our parish’s Eucharistic celebration of Christmas. In the name of our parish and of my name, I say THANK YOU to each and every one of you for making Christmas so beautiful here at Immaculate and I also offer a large THANK YOU to YOU, the parishioners for your support and appreciation of our music ministry here at Immaculate. Merry Christmas and Happy Epiphany! —Preston High School Basketball Festival The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children—which provides partial tuition scholarships for low income students in grades K to 12 to attend Catholic schools—will hold its annual High School Basketball Festival January 9 and 10, at Kean University.
