hen I was a kid growing up, July was one of
my favorite months. School was a dim
memory, baseball was in full swing (smile),
there were picnics, swimming, long days, and of course
think you might like to do
a little “fun” sailboat
racing, this is the group you want to participate with for a
little competition and a lot of fun.

reflection. Back when I was young, I was worried about

dockside. On Saturday the fifth, the Club will welcome a
perennial favorite - entertainer Sue Palmer, Queen of
Boogie Woogie, and her Motel Swing Band Orchestra. Be
sure to get to the Club early for that event, as it is always
very well attended – Chef Danny will be running specials
for dinner. Then Sunday, the Southwestern Racing Fleet
will hold its second of three Boland series races. If you
our service members going to a variety of “hot spots”
around the world. As we celebrate the anniversary of our
Nation’s Independence with parties, fireworks, and good
food and drink, let’s take a moment to tip our hat and be
thankful for all the men and women who represent our
great Nation, protect our freedom and help so many others
all over the world every day.
However you celebrate in July, make sure to include all
your friends at the Club in your itinerary.

hat an incredible
Vice Commodore’s
Party we just had! If
you can believe it, because, well, frankly, it’s not often I
am at a loss for words, I was caught almost speechless
over the warm and generous things some of the speakers
had to say. I was deeply honored by the whole event and
it will be one of my most cherished memories. We had a
fantastic group of attendees, coupled with delicious food,
great entertainment, and wonderful decorations. All that
together made for a memorably fun event for all. And for
all those who wanted to be there, but were unable to
attend-we felt you there in spirit!
First of all, I would like to give a big thank you to Rear
Commodore Sandra Sherman for putting on such a great
event. She truly outdid herself with this party, and, based
on how well we worked together, I know we’ll continue
to have a great working relationship over the next few
years! Thank you, too, to Sandy Trimpi who worked with
Sandra to create all the amazing decorations. As is typical,
Sandy went above and beyond with the décor! I know
everyone in attendance would like to thank John Trimpi
for hiring my favorite band, San Diego’s finest Beatles
revival band, Help!. The dance floor stayed packed all
night and there were even a few fun battles with beach
balls on the dance floor. And of course, a huge thank you

O
ver half way through the
year and, as you can see
by the number of new
members that have been introduced
to you each month, we have had
some busy sponsors this year. It is
always wonderful to see how many
of you are involved in bringing new
members to SWYC.
This month, I have the pleasure of introducing eight new
members.
Dean & Deborah Wilson and their 4 daughters, are
joining us as regular members. They plan on buying a
boat, but wanted to join a Club first and thanks to their
sponsors, Stephanie Rossis & Mike Callahan, who sold
them on our Junior Program, they felt SWYC was the best
fit. They have 4 daughters, Dina age 12, Laney age 9, and
Dylan & Delilah age 6 and are interested in having them
take sailing lessons this summer. Dean has always enjoyed
sailing and has sailed on his sister’s boat many times. They
look forward to getting involved in the social activities and
race management.
Matt Schmidt & Leila Karp own a C&C 37 currently at
Shelter Island Marina; they sail by SWYC every time they
take the boat out and have always thought about joining.
After meeting their sponsors, Jeff Spangler & George
Karris, and attending Opening Day, they felt it was a
good time to become members. Matt grew up in Munich
and has sailed most of his life. He misses racing and would
like to get involved again as well as teach young members
the basics of small boat handling. While Leila is new to
sailing, she has grown up around the water and hopes to
get involved with the Anglers.
Patrick & Brenda Sgambati have recently sold their
powerboat and purchased their first sailboat. Their
sponsors, Ian Van Tuyl & Mike Johnston, have sailed
with them on many occasions helping them get used to
their new Catalina 30. Patrick is a Technology Manager for
Wells Fargo and Brenda is an Executive Secretary for a
major local Casino. They currently reside in Riverside, but
are looking forward to retiring in a few years. Until then

they plan on spending most of their free time sailing.
Abel & Susana Toledo currently do not own a boat, but
are looking into potential sailboat options. They recently
have become empty nesters, with their three children
between 18 & 22 no longer in the house and are looking
to develop new friendships with mutual interests. They are
neighbors with their sponsor, Dick Adams, and were
introduced to the Club by Carlos & Magaly Caprioglio.
Abel is a physician who loves the ocean, not only sailing,
but he is an avid surfer. They indicated they live within
walking distance to the Club, but considering they run
marathons, that could be further than most of us would
think is walking distance.
William & Cynthia Roush have been active in many
Yacht Clubs over the years, including Bill being a Staff
Commodore from Oceanside Yacht Club. They are looking
to have their boat back in San Diego Bay, so felt that
joining a Club here was important. Now that they are both
retired, they are interested in getting involved in Club
activities again. They have four children and six
grandchildren, two live locally and are potential Junior
program participants. Bill is looking forward to getting
back into racing and making new friends and getting
reconnected with old friends, like his sponsor, Mike Kirk,
who has known Bill for over 45 years. They used to sail
together before Bill and Cindy moved to North County.
Mark Newcomb and his wife Ellie are joining us as Flag
members and plan to bring their Catalina 22 to the Club.
Mark grew up in Point Loma and remembers SWYC as the
friendly Club; it is nice to know things have not changed
in the years since he was a child. He is a pilot for
American Airlines and now that his children are grown, he
is looking forward to getting back into the boating
community. Bob Bernier has known Mark for over 10
years from their time as Pilots for American together and
Jerry Newton knows Mark through his parents. Mark’s
parents were neighbors of the Newtons for over 24 years.
Steve Cobos is sponsoring his brother, Peter Cobos.
Peter currently lives in Las Vegas, but plans on continued
travels to San Diego. Peter has enjoyed the time that he
has spent on Steve’s boat at SWYC and hopes to get a slip

T
he Port of San Diego recently
completed their hazardous
materials site visit. We did a
great job! I can see three reasons for
this. 1. Many of you understand the
importance of keeping hazardous
materials confined. 2. Some of you
read my notice in the Halyard and
cleaned things up a bit around your area. 3. Bob Soderberg’s
team walked the docks and, with my permission, removed the
hazardous material they found. The good news is that there
just wasn’t much they had to remove. So fellow members,
congratulations to you! And thanks!
Member Dock Orientation is here! What is it? We are
starting a new program for members who are placing their
boat in a club slip for the first time. Aligning with one of
our Dockmasters, the member will be instructed as to the
location of safety ladders, safety rings, fire extinguishers,
fire hoses, first aid stations, AEDs, electrical boxes, etc.
They also learn how to properly secure their boats and a
bit about shared slip courtesies. It will become mandatory
for members placing boats in a slip since the first of the
year. Others are very welcome to receive the orientation.
If you want to keep a boat in the water overnight, keep in
mind that we are making 24’ slips available for that. You
can coordinate it with the front office.
In the last ten years, San Diego has experienced two
tsunamis. No, we didn’t have huge waves crushing houses.
But both of them created extremely strong currents in the
bay. The water behaved like that in fast moving rivers. The
added feature was that the water rapidly moved in one
direction and then switched direction and rapidly moved in
the opposite direction. Strong enough that large boats
broke away from their berths and the dock at Bali Hai was
destroyed. During the last tsunami, some boaters decided
to take their boats out to open waters. Because of its
openness to the ocean, the Shelter Island Basin is one of
the most vulnerable areas. Thanks to our General Manager
Craig Wong, the Dockmasters have become aware of a
tsunami preparedness program and will be developing a
plan for our club.
Please remember, if you are planning on taking your boat
out of the slip for more than 72 hours you must file a float
plan. The Front Office, the Treasurer, your fellow members
and I all thank you for your cooperation.
In the fall of last year, the Rules & Regulations regarding
boats at the small boat dock were modified.
2.12.3 The use of the small boat dock is reserved for those
boats, which are normally kept in dry storage on

trailers. The hoist area is to be kept clear at all
times. At no time shall a member moor a boat on
the small boat dock overnight without permission of

It always amazes me to see the variety of ways that
sponsors introduce new members to our Club. Some are
lifelong friends - others have only known the person for a
few months, but regardless; they were able to introduce
their friends to our SWYC family.

time of the year, summer
has finally arrived! From
the standpoint of someone who
has been in school for 11 years,
we are all excited to be done
with school and start being able
to get out on the water every day.

and Jesse O’Dell. Cody is a freshman at the
University of Oregon, battling a senior for the “A”
position on the team. University of Oregon is
currently up against the top schools in the nation
including Yale, Stanford, UCSB, and more. Jesse is
sailing for Brown University and has placed ninth
in the western league. Good Job sailors!
Before summer officially starts let’s take a look at
the juniors’ recent accomplishments. At the start of
May, the local Point Loma High School sailing
team competed in the ISSA national
championships for the Mallory Trophy down on
the San Diego city front. The team won the regatta
by quite literally a foot. If our “B” team skipper
didn’t pop the jib giving himself a legal boost in
speed winning our fifth national championship in
the past 4 years. Next the Point Loma High School
team traveled to Houston, Texas, for the ISSA
Team Racing Championship for the Baker Trophy.
The team sailed an exceptional regatta winning yet
another national championship. Congrats Pointers!
The juniors maintain over 60 boats, trailers,
engines and, yes, kayaks. It takes a lot of hours to
keep things running. We'll have a junior work
party on June 21st to get every little detail
buttoned up for the summer. After school sailing
has finished up for the year and a big thanks to all
May and June are always a very exciting time for
the junior program because our college sailors are
returning for the summer. The beginning of June is
the college national championships. We have two

drove sailors down to the Club. A big thanks to
our long time coach, Eric, who recently finished
his last winter coaching at SWYC. SWYC welcomes
back returning summer instructors Blake Buckner
and Courtney Odou, plus all of the new coaches
including our very own Mercedes McPhee.
Just as a friendly reminder, it’s not too late to sign
up for Summer Camp! Just come by the Junior
Office for a registration sheet or print one out
from the website. And of course, may the winds

he annual Dock Fishing
Tournament on Sunday,
May 18, was a day for
many variety of fish caught and
released. There were sargo,
perch, spotted bay bass, sand
bass, lizard fish, white sea bass,
halibut, yellowfin croaker, bat rays, shovel nose shark
and other rays. There were 110 anglers with 40 fish
weighed in. The big fish of the day was a 8.75# halibut
caught by Maggie Ramos in the 11-13 year category.
2nd was Gavin Simmons with a spotted bay bass and
3rd was Nikolai Halldorson with a spotted bay bass. In
the 6 and under division, 1st was Kade Jaffe with a
spotted bay bass, 2nd Lociano Vitale with a sargo and
3rd Caden Baker with a spotted bay bass. In the 7-10
division, 1st Tayler Kinner white sea bass, 2nd Josh
Jaffe sand bass and 3rd Brooke Bryant spotted bay
bass. Sharks and rays division, Brayden Fisk shovel
nose shark. The 14-16 category, 1st Emily Daly perch
and 2nd Isabella Rice yellowfin croaker. In the adult
division, 1st Vince Martell a nice spottie, 2nd Bob
Bossler spotted bay bass and 3rd Bryce Bossler spotted
bay bass. In the casting contest, Chris Rice with a bullseye won the 17 & under division and Rob Gerhart
within 1 in of the ring won the adult division.
Mickey Cooper's report on the Fishing Seminar on Wednesday, 5.28.2014: The fishing seminar
conducted by Jon Epsten & Rich Richards was quite successful and attended by over 40
anglers from different organizations in San Diego. The guest speaker, Captain Ben Florentino,
offered many insights to fishing inshore and offshore bass of all kinds. His credentials were
not only very impressive but his anecdotes and good humor kept the group amused.
Southwestern Anglers gave away over $250.00 worth of raffle prizes with the bulk being
provided by Luc Ofield and Anglers Choice. Most who attended came away with a much
better knowledge of bass fishing and some very fine tackle to enhance their fishing inventory.
Get out and fish for them halibuts, they are biting off of Imperial Beach. The Christina
Lynn, Snooper, El Mago, Listo, Concubine, Dos Hermanos and Great Escape slayed them in May. Tom Olson reported catching
six halls one day with his fish weighing 26.3# and his guest, Larry Andrew with a 36.65 lber. Bob Woodard got 11 halls the
same day.

Southwestern Cruisers

C
oronado Cays Yacht Club members were amazed to see
an impressive fleet of 20 boats rafted up just outside their
clubhouse. The SWYC Strawberry Cruisers had arrived.
Over the weekend CCYC hosted between 45-50 members of
SWYC, some of whom drove down for a day.
What a weekend! Friday night was the traditional first night wine and hors
d’oeuvres. Becky and Rob Witters Uno Mas, Cheryl and Rocky Wilson Reef
Bandit and Arlene and Ron Dixon Oro Blanco played hosts and cruisers
moved from boat to boat greeting new and old friends.
CCYC included us in a number of activities. On Saturday we were treated to a
tour of Coronado Cays on Duffy Boats. It was fun to learn a bit of history.
Saturday evening there was a Puerto Nuevo buffet followed by dancing.
Sunday offered up a potluck barbecue. The barbecue was followed by
karaoke performances and SWYC’s Ruth Brower Makani Lani showed them how it is done.
Of course there was the traditional bocce ball competition. John and Suzanne Pew Sweetie represented SWYC, having
beaten Susan and Larry Twomey Midnight Voyage in a heated battle of skills. Unfortunately CCYC won, and retained the
OAR Trophy.
Looking ahead, don’t miss the July 4 Big Bang Potluck Dinghy Parade. You can come by land or sea. We will find you a
ride. Bring food to share.
CATALINA HERE WE COME. September is SWYC month in Catalina. Events are planned for the week of September 14,
although SWYC boats will be visiting Catalina all month long.

0 May the first race of our Harbor Series took place
with cool weather and the sun playing peek-a-boo
all morning. Unlike our course of last month, this
one was a pleasant boat ride, with no intrusive lat/lons or
timed runs to contend with. Ten vessels started the event
at Coronado Bridge pier eighteen and proceeded north to
the first mark, Channel Buoy 21, a u-turn, and thence back
down the harbor to the second mark, Bridge Pier twenty.
Following the buoys south brought us to mark number
three, Channel Buoy forty. Across to day mark Private “C”,
then to Channel Buoy thirty four for mark four, and a long
haul up to the finish line at Bridge Pier nineteen. Upon the
conclusion of the race, both boat crews and observers met
at Coronado Cays Yacht Club to experience the culinary
art as practiced by Chef Luciano. With the bridge of
Coronado Cays out on the water, the trophies were awarded
by the club manager, Larry Sangus. In first place and hitting
one out of the park was Mike Fontaine piloting Tuffy in
with an astounding 0.1935 error percentage, the best SDCA
score in the past fifteen years. Ed Denaci aboard Microship
II, tallied a 0.6843 for third place with Jim Lonergan
steering Casa Del Perro Tres in with a count of 0.8672 for a
fifth place finish. In eighth place was Ralph Salerno, your
scribe, aboard Ancora with a score of 1.6323. The
competition is getting tough out there with the first six boats
finishing under 1% of error.
