Located just 30 minutes from Stowe, Montpelier is the smallest state capital in the
United States and is home to an active community. Montpelier boasts a vibrant
art and music scene, restaurants, independently owned shops and of course
the Vermont State House, one of the oldest and best preserved state capitols
in the nation. If you’re planning a day trip to Vermont’s capitol, here are some
suggestions to help you make a day of it.
2. Morse Farm Maple SugarWorks
1. Vermont State House
115 State St., Montpelier, VT
The Vermont State House is one of the oldest
and best preserved of our nation’s state capitols.

chambers, we hope you will develop a sense of
what makes this historic building, and the State
for which it was built, unique.
Guided tours are available free of charge and
are available Monday-Friday, 10:00 to 3:30, and
Saturdays, 11:00 to 2:30.

Free sugar house tours and tasting, multimedia
displays in a real woodshed theater, a nature trail,

(802) 828-2291
The museum’s core exhibit, “Freedom and Unity: One Ideal,
Many Stories,” opened in March 2004 and won a national
award. The multimedia exhibit, which represents Vermont’s
history from 1600 to the present, fills 5,000 square feet in
the Pavilion Building in Montpelier. Visitors walk through
time and experience a full-sized Abenaki wigwam, a recreation of the Catamount Tavern where Ethan Allen’s
Green Mountain Boys gathered, a railroad station complete
with a working telegraph and a WWII living room furnished
with period music and magazines.
5. Capital City Farmers Market (Saturdays)

6. Downtown Montpelier Architecture
Stroll the quaint streets of downtown Montpelier and enjoy
the beautiful historic buildings. According to nps.com, the
450 buildings that comprise the Montpelier Historic District
reflect the town’s prosperous past, during which time
many high style and vernacular examples of various 19th
century architectural styles were constructed. Such variety
of styles, and the mix of domestic, commercial, religious,
and institutional buildings speak to the slow but continuous
growth of the town. The Montpelier Historic District is
roughly bounded by Memorial Drive, Bailey Avenue,
Hubbard Park, Vine Street, and Hubbard Street. Residences
are private and not open to the public, but many of the
businesses, institutions and government buildings welcome
visitors.
