ArcelorMittal showcases unparalleled
advantages of steel at automotive R&D event
Around 70 analysts gathered at the Goldman Sachs headquarters in London on June 3 for
ArcelorMittal’s 2015 Automotive R&D event. Daniel Fairclough, vice president investor relations, was
joined by Brian Aranha, head of global automotive and commercial coordination, and Gregory Ludkovsky,
head of global R&D, who demonstrated how steel is providing – and will continue to provide –
innovative solutions to the challenges facing the automotive industry.
Car manufacturers today have two
key requirements, Brian explained
to the audience of analysts. They
operate using global platforms in
which the design is done centrally
and where the same products –
with the same specifications and
quality level – are required in every
region. About 46 per cent of
passenger vehicles today are
produced on global platforms and
this number is expected to grow to
more than 60 per cent by 2020.
With its global footprint,
ArcelorMittal is uniquely positioned
to supply these products globally.
As worldwide regulation
tightens, the growing need for fuel
economy is also a key concern for
manufacturers, as Brian emphasized
in his presentation. In the European
Union, the CO2 emission target for
new passenger cars is 95g/km,
which will be phased in for 95 per
cent of vehicles in 2020, and 100
per cent in 2021. In the US and
Canada, corporate average fuel
economy (CAFE) regulations for
light vehicles call for 54.5 miles per
gallon by 2025.
While the majority of the
required improvements are
expected to come from
powertrain efficiency,
aerodynamics, rolling resistance
and electrification, reducing the
weight of the vehicles is also key.
In fact, car manufacturers need to
achieve a 20 per cent weight
reduction in the body-in-white
(BIW) to meet these targets.
ArcelorMittal’s automotive
strategy is centred around these
key requirements, and has already
proven successful. Our existing
advanced high strength steels
(AHSS) alone are enabling the
weight reduction needed for
manufacturers to achieve their
targets.

Investments
Introduced in 2010, our S-in
motion® range of steel solutions for
C-segment vehicles achieved 20
per cent BIW weight reduction from
2009 baseline. Similarly, S-in
motion® for Pickup Trucks was
delivered in 2014 and achieved a
23 per cent weight reduction from
2013 baseline. This year we will
launch the D-segment design,
which will reach a 24 per cent
reduction from 2015 baseline with
commercially available grades.
What’s more, these solutions are
typically “cost-neutral” to original
equipment manufacturers (OEMs)
– with the higher cost of the steel
grades offset by the lower volumes
required.
But our product development
programmes do not stop here.
Within the next two years, new
grades of steel will be introduced
with further weight reduction
potential of 3 per cent. These new
steel grades include our Fortiform®
range of third-generation AHSS for
cold stamping, as well as even
stronger AHSS for hot stamping,
with Usibor® 2000 (vs the current
1500 megapascal MPa) and
Ductibor® 1000 (vs the current
500MPa).
One way to apply these
materials in targeted areas is
through laser welding, where two
pieces of steel are welded together
by a laser. With this technology, a
part can be formed with thicker
material where it is needed, leaving
the rest in thinner steel, or
specifically providing strength and
crash energy absorption where
needed.
So one of our strengths lies in
the uniqueness and unparalleled
quality of our steels and steel
solutions; but another key
differentiating factor of
ArcelorMittal is our size and global
scale. Our automotive production
facilities are located across Europe,
NAFTA, Brazil and South Africa, in
addition to joint venture facilities in
Turkey and China. To further extend
our footprint and seize the growth

Last night while watching the Opening Ceremony of the Toronto 2015 Pan
American Games, I felt incredibly proud of our team here in Hamilton.
I watched our steel being showcased through unique, vibrant pieces of art
that literally came together as part of the ceremony to form a Games’ first:
a replica cauldron designed with community input. One of the pieces of
steel (called scales) features our company logo, which our Don MacVicar
(Commercial) proudly placed on the pine-cone shaped cauldron. We also
watched in awe as the Games’ cauldron was lit for the first time – together,
that’s 34-tonnes of made-in-Hamilton ArcelorMittal Dofasco steel erupting
to form the Games’ most iconic symbol.
As Official Steel Supplier to the Games’ cauldron, we worked closely with
TO2015 to help bring the vision for the Games’ and People’s cauldrons to life
– all in secrecy as the Games’ cauldron is kept confidential until its lighting.
While working with the Games’ organizing committee for more than a year,
we specified and supplied 10 types of steel, consulted with fabricators and
produced a custom plate steel base for the cauldron. We were even on site
during the assembly of the cauldron helping with assembly/construction
within the cauldron pedestal.
We also helped bring together representatives of 30 communities to provide
input into the Games opening ceremony and People’s (replica) cauldron which
was part of the Ceremony and which will find its permanent home in
Hamilton as a legacy to the Games. In June, we also launched an important
legacy project of the Games: the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Grassroots Soccer
program. The Ward 3 and the stadium precinct program was developed in
partnership with the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton and District Soccer
Association and will give 500 children an opportunity to learn soccer in their
own community, with no cost.
This has been a remarkable and once in a lifetime opportunity. In recounting
his experiences with being a part of the Opening Ceremony, Don MacVicar
talked to me about how the lighting of the cauldron made him reflect on the
passing of the torch from the many employees who have come before us.
Indeed it was a proud and inspiring moment to see the strength and beauty
of our steel together with the power of sport in this incredible event that will
forever be remembered and commemorated.
Soccer fans at the CIBC Hamilton Pan Am stadium lined up in droves to have their photo taken as a keepsake
of their Games’ experience. More than 50 company volunteers, including Elaine (MH&L) and Ivan Horvat
(CTS) above, helped operate the green screen cube during the Games. The experience was very popular with
more than 24,000 people having their photo taken during the men’s and women’s soccer events, including
Games’ mascot Pachi. Many participants shared their photos through email, text and social media.

forms this beautiful cauldron and we can all be proud of our role in these
transformational Games.

On Friday, June 12, as part of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Play Day for schools in Ontario,
ArcelorMittal Dofasco, the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Athletic Trust announced long-term funding
for a new soccer development program in Ward 3. The announcement was made at the CIBC Hamilton
Pan Am Soccer Stadium (Tim Horton’s Field) where the youth program, open to children ages five through
13, will teach basic soccer skills at a world class soccer venue. Approximately 500 children will have access
to the program at no cost as the company will invest 250,000 over 10 years to fund the program. The City
of Hamilton Athletic Trust Fund will also help to fund the program.

The cauldron came to life in the Games’ opening ceremony

Ian Fehrman’s gold medal games
Ian Fehrman (Ironmaking) won a Games’ GOLD with the Canadian Men’s
Softball at the baseball venue in Ajax, ON with a 2-1 win over Venezuela
on Saturday, July 18. The win extended the team’s streak to eight
consecutive gold medals at the Games (2015 marked the return of the
sport to the Games’ after it last appeared in 2003).
There were plenty of ArcelorMittal Dofasco supporters cheering for
Ian, with a couple of particularly loud voices in the stands. With seats just
above the dugout, Ian says he could hear his colleagues Phil Secord and
Chuck Armstrong cheering for him in a round robin game against the
U.S.A. Ian, a shortstop, sealed that game win, making a double play with

Ian, who is a Team Leader at the No.3 Blast Furnace, says “It was
a great experience. Everything we needed was right there in the
Athlete’s Village. There were 6,500 athletes from all different countries
at different houses. I lived the life of a professional athlete for a couple
of weeks.”
He brought the gold medal in to show some of his colleagues
including (above, from left) Ken Bagu, Phil Secord, Ian, Masood Habib
and Chuck Armstrong.
A member of the Men’s National Team since 2005, Ian has also
competed at the 2006 Pan American Championship (Silver), and the
2015 (Gold), 2013 (5th) and 2009 (Bronze) International Softball
Federation World Championships. The 2015 World Championship was
won in Saskatoon just two weeks before the Pan American Games. We
understand that, for now, Ian is hanging up his cleats. Congratulations
on an outstanding softball career, Ian!
Igniting the competitive fire
one relay leg at a time
Seven of our employees had a hand in lighting the Games’ cauldron
flame as they each ran a leg of the 41-day Torch Relay, including Jesse
Love (Security and Loss Prevention above).
The employees and two corporate customers were positioned
between Winona and Waterdown during the torch run on Sunday,
June 21, while Joanne Diemert (Human Resources) participated during
the Toronto leg on July 9. Each carried the torch for 200 metres.
Employees were randomly selected from among the top 10 recognized
and top 10 recognizers through the Thanks a TON recognition
program. The other torch bearers were Kim Hubbard (IT), Jack Popielec
(MH&L), Robert Adzija (Steelmaking), Cyril Mcintyre (Cold Roll
Products) and Guiseppe Carrescia (Pickling and Cold Roll).

Pathways to Education helps
students overcome barriers

The ArcelorMittal Dofasco Corporate Community Investment
Fund supports Pathways to Education, which helps students
overcome barriers that can stand in the way of their education. The
organization provides after-school tutoring, mentoring and financial
assistance to secondary school students. On June 24, Team Orange
helped students and Pathways staff celebrate the end of a successful

Record crowds visited the F.H. Sherman Recreation and Learning
Centre for ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s 31st annual Canada Day
celebrations. The event included a Citizenship Court, a petting zoo,
bouncy castles, and live music, capped off by an incredible fireworks
display. Volunteers and Recreation Park staff worked hard to ensure

Turning bare land into a
Giving Garden
Working with the Neighbour to Neighbour Centre, Team Orange
members helped turn an underused plot of land on the south Hamilton
Mountain into a vegetable garden. Named the Giving Garden, it will be
used to increase the availability of fresh, healthy produce to be
distributed through the local food bank. Greg Macfarlane (Cold Roll/
Tin) and his grandson Liam prepared the soil for vegetable seeds.
Team Orange gives Cancer Assistance
Program walkers a boost
Team Orange helping protect Princess Point Marsh
Team Orange members including Lori Stevenson (Commercial) and Keyvan Tahmasebi (Process
Automation) volunteered at the inaugural Cancer Assistance Program CARE Walk June 6. Team Orange
assisted with registration, monitoring the walk route and helped serve a barbecue lunch. All funds raised at
the event will help the Cancer Assistance Program continue providing free services for individuals with
cancer living in Hamilton and surrounding area. ArcelorMittal Dofasco also supports the Cancer Assistance
Program with a grant through our Corporate Community Investment Fund (CCIF).
Team Orange members, including Adrianne Kolich (Purchasing), partnered with the Bay Area Restoration
Council (BARC) in June to plant native prairie plants along the Princess Point Marsh. The plants will help stamp
out invasive species that threaten the biodiversity of this area and aid the recovery of Hamilton Harbour. This is
the fourth year ArcelorMittal Dofasco has participated in a planting, part of a Sustain Our Great Lakes grant
received by BARC. Sustain Our Great Lakes is a public private partnership that ArcelorMittal supports. The
program’s mission is to sustain, restore and protect the fish, wildlife and habitat of the Great Lakes basin.

$500,000 gift supports Joseph Brant Hospital
Foundation
During the Burlington Sound of Music Festival, ArcelorMittal Dofasco presented $500,000 to the Joseph
Brant Hospital Foundation from our Corporate Community Investment Fund. In recognition of the gift, the
Burlington hospital’s new emergency ambulance bay will be named for ArcelorMittal Dofasco. We also
partnered with the festival once again to offer the Sweet Seats premium hospitality and seating experience.

“If there is an accident there,
it could be a serious one. We are
trying to identify any hazards and
stop the accident before it
happens,” he said.
The team posted a map of
the area on the wall and any time
an unsafe behaviour or condition
is noted, a sticker is placed in that
spot on the map. The information
is also recorded on a card and later
entered into a database.
“It became pretty obvious in
the first few days what spots on
the map were showing up. It
pointed clearly to what needed to

Byrd Accident Pyramid, which

Last year, a team from
Central Trades and Services
machine shop undertook a pilot
project using the Byrd’s Pyramid
concept. They called themselves
the Pyramid Builders and created
a process to seek out hazards,
finding more than 1,000 unsafe
behaviours and conditions in their
area over six weeks. The team
then developed tactics to
eliminate the behaviours and
conditions. The pilot was a
tremendous success and now
other teams are following suit. In
2016, the entire ArcelorMittal
Dofasco organization will use this
model on our Journey to Zero,
which is about preventing
accidents by understanding and
managing hazards.
Robins said the Pyramid of
Steel team found behaviours
including trucks backing up
without a signal, forklift operators
not beeping their horns and truck
drivers not wearing earplugs or a
helmet.
The team is now analysing
the data to decide the next steps.
Robins said possible actions
include moving the pedestrian
walkway and installing an
automatic horn that blasts if
someone is approaching within 10
feet.
Kevin Moffatt, Health and
Safety Process Leader for Material
Handling & Logistics, said
housekeeping rules in his unit
were already very good but his
team still found hazards using the
Pyramid Builder System.
“We have had no accidents in
a long time but we were still
collecting cards,” he said. “As good
as we are, we are not as good as
we think we are. Even though we
are not having accidents,
behaviours still need to change.”
Moffatt said some examples
include employees leaving items in
walkways or entering and exiting
the building improperly. As well,
employees using the area to get to
a nearby office area walk without
work boots, helmets or safety
glasses.
“When we presented the
data to our members, they were
shocked,” Moffatt said, adding
that the team has collected a few
hundred cards and is now
examining trends.
Moffatt says it was difficult
at first to convince employees
that no names are recorded on
the cards and they are only used
for data collection and not to
report anyone for disciplinary
action. He also says education is
needed to help everyone
understand the difference
between conditions and
behaviours. He also cautions that
the reporting process has to be
quick and simple to inspire
widespread participation.
“I do believe the company is
going in the right direction,” he
said. “We need to understand our
behaviours and working
conditions so we can change our
behaviour and the way we think.”

ArcelorMittal Dofasco participants wrapped up a very successful
fourth annual Personal Best program! The six-month program offered
different streams including the Healthwise, Weightwise, Resiliency and
Get up and Go streams. Participants lost a combined 545 lbs of fat
mass and 147 inches from their waists. Congratulations to our draw
prize winners who each received a $50 gift card to SportChek: Kevin
Bialkowski (CTS), Miriam Wright (IT), Michael Bovenkamp (EMT), Greg
Duern (Ironmaking) and Dave Durfey (Finance). Big congratulations to

ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s KOBM Steelmaking Innovation Through
Automation project was been named an American Metal Market Steel
Excellence award winner for Best Operational Improvement. The
award was presented at a gala dinner in New York City on June 9, at
the Steel Success Strategies Conference. The winning project resulted
in ArcelorMittal Dofasco having the only BOF in the world that doesn’t
require sampling. Notably, it is also the first fully automated tapping
furnace in the ArcelorMittal Group, and one of only three in the world.
These milestones have not gone unnoticed by the industry, as this
project was also awarded a worldsteel “Steelie Award” for best
innovation.

In June, Ray Henriksbo (Cokemaking) participated in the bicentenary
re-enactment of the Battle of Waterloo (Belgium) attended by 6,000
reenactors from more than 20 countries. Ray’s unit, The Royal Scots,
had to pass period authenticity standards for clothing and equipment
a year in advance in order to participate in the event, with a
representative from the Waterloo Committee inspecting the unit
and observing their drills on the field. The Royal Scots are part of the
200-man British North American Brigade which enjoyed the honour
of having autonomous command amongst the allied forces that were
at the Waterloo re-enactment. Here Ray, right, in uniform with the

Waterloo took place on June 18, 1815 and saw Napolean defeated by
the allied forces of the Seventh Coalition.
