Steel,
the fabric
of life
We produce over 2 million tons of steel
every year from iron ore and recycled scrap.
ArcelorMittal Montreal steel is used in such
major projects as the Hibernia and Hebron oil
drilling platforms and the new Highway 30
south of Montreal, for example.
ArcelorMittal Montreal is also…
…the largest canadian manufacturer
of rebar for the construction industry.
…the world's largest manufacturer
of steel for leaf springs used in the major
auto maker's light trucks and heavyduty trucks.
…the preferred supplier for the world's
largest welding products manufacturer.
These are only a few examples of the many
uses of ArcelorMittal Montreal steel,
the fabric of life.
Driving local
and regional
economies
With solid roots in our host communities
for decades, we play an active role in the
development of regions in which we operate.
ArcelorMittal Montreal has over 1,700
employees who live near the facilities where
they work. The company generates annual
economic spinoffs of more than $1 billion
in wages and benefits, taxes, investments
and purchases of goods and services, thereby
contributing to growth on Montreal’s South
Shore, in Quebec and in Ontario. We are also
proud to play a role in the success of the
1,600 suppliers who directly or indirectly
support our operations, which also creates
additional jobs.
ArcelorMittal Montreal is the most important
Canadian company in iron ore mining and
processing, boosting the local economy.
Iron ore from the group’s sister company
in northern Quebec, ArcelorMittal Mining
Canada, is processed up to six times before
it is finally used.
Social
responsibility :
more than words
ArcelorMittal Montreal endeavours to give
back to its host communities and minimize
the impact of its operations on the
environment where the company operates.
Every year we support various organizations
in the fields of education, environment,
sports and recreation, health and social
services and arts and culture.
We are one of the main contributors to the
Richelieu-Yamaska region’s Centraide/United
Way campaign, and award scholarships
annually to students at many schools in
Greater Montreal and Montérégie.
• We are the largest recycler in Quebec
processing near one million tons of scrap
at our facilities every year. Steel from
150 years ago is still part of our lives today.
• Close to 100% of the materials that enter
our scrap recycling and processing centres
are recycled or reclaimed.
• Four of our plants have achieved the
GOLD level in the Recyc-Québec ICI On
Recycle ! program with a waste recovery
rate of over 90%.
Our
history
1914
The St. Patrick Street wire mill begins
operations in Montreal.

Stelco Steel builds a tube plant in
Contrecoeur, then opens a rolling mill
in 1965 and steelworks in 1974.

merges with Sidérurgie du Québec (Sidbec)
to form Sidbec-Dosco, creating

The government privatizes Sidbec-Dosco,
selling the company to Ispat International;
it then becomes Ispat Sidbec.
1999
Ispat International purchases Inland Steel,
USA, through Ispat Sidbec.
2004
Ispat Sidbec’s name changes
to Mittal Canada.

in Contrecœur, as well as two wire mills
in Montreal and Hamilton.
