President Ron Howard
I recently was extraordinarily fortunate to be able to attend the Texas
Belted Galloway Association’s Christmas party and visit with a number of
Beltie breeders in that area. Beyond the confirmation that Beltie breeders
everywhere are very special people, I came away with two primary observations.
First, that no matter what part of the country you go, there are some terrific Belted Galloway cattle being raised. We visited farms that few other Beltie breeders had even seen, and
there were some cows and bulls that would have worked well in any herd in the country.
Second, the formation of the Texas Belted Galloway Association was an excellent decision by the group, and with the strong leadership of all involved will be very successful.
But most importantly, it was a good decision because of their unique and common needs.
There is a mix of members who are relatively new to our breed and members who are also
veteran cattle people. They can all learn from each other and support one another.
It is my belief that having strong regional Beltie groups are just as important as having a
strong national organization. We will look in 2011 for ways to support the regional groups
to make them even stronger. The first step will be to invite the president of each regional
group to participate in quarterly teleconference calls to share their work and to see what we
can learn from each other.
Finally, The Texas group gave recognition to Homer and Diane
Mohn for their work in establishing and promoting Belties in Texas.
A well deserved award!

the last two weeks of the month. Advertising bulls … Before advertising a
young male as a breeder we must be sure he is well conformed, tracks properly,
has good legs and feet, and exhibits good weight gains. We should have data
available on his birth weight, 205-day weaning weight, and yearling weight. If
he's reached breeding age (around 18 months), it's definitely a plus to have his
semen checked for quantity and motility.

date and the names of his sire and dam. Further, it is required that registration
numbers be included on bulls advertised for sale in the Hotline and newsletter.

Welcome to Council
We welcome he following individuals who have been elected
or re-elected to serve on Council beginning in January 2010.
Scott Griffith (TX) and his wife, Holly, own and operate the
Bluebird Ranch in the small east Texas town of Murchison.
The ranch has been in the family for over 100 years and for
most of that time has been a cattle operation. In addition to a
herd of about 75 Belted Galloway cattle, they raise commercial cattle, Kiko goats, horses, and grow, harvest and sell
coastal bermuda hay. Some of their grass-finished Beltie beef
is carried at local health food stores. There are a number of
different families that live on the ranch, all of whom gather at
the main house and share a community meal, prayer time and
devotion each week. Scott holds a Master's degree in Business
and previously taught at the local university, as well as, consulted in the financial and aerospace industries. Currently, he
spends much of his time managing the ranch and a real estate
business. Scott is also President of the Texas Belted Galloway Association.
Jerry Moore (KY) and his wife, Jennifer, live in south central
Kentucky in the small town of Smith’s Grove. The Moores purchased their first Belted Galloway in 1992 and began showing in
1999. Their cattle have appeared in shows across the country.
Jerry was the past herd superintendent at the Georgia National
Fair. The family strives for breed preservation, maintaining high
quality animals. On their farm, they also raise alfalfa, grass hay,
tobacco, and sweet corn. Jerry is a high school social studies
teacher and coach. He enjoys his teaching career and raising
Belted Galloway cattle. Jerry has served on Council for a oneyear term. He is currently Chairman of the Show and Sale committees.
Jon Rozelle (AZ) grew up on a small ranch in southern California providing him with deep appreciation for animals and
the outdoors. He enjoys working on his ranch located outside
of Flagstaff, Arizona, where his family rides horses and manage a small herd of Belties. At an elevation of 7,400 feet, just
80 miles from the Grand Canyon, they experience all the diverse seasons that occur in their part of the country. From
snow and frozen stock ponds during the winter to the hot, dry
days of summer, they spend hands-on time with their Belties
virtually every day. Jon purchased his herd of Belties in
January 2000 and still owns many of their original animals
today. Holding a degree in electrical engineering with a minor
emphasis in business, John’s professional career has included
work in the aerospace, medical, and construction industries.
Jon has held the position of President in the Western Belted
Galloway Association and enjoys promoting his unique breed
of cattle. Jon has served on Council in a one-year term and
now is finishing a two-year term. He formerly co-chaired the
BYG Committee and now is the Chair of the Annual Meeting
Committee.

From Vic’s Desk
New England Galloway Group
Executive Director Vic Eggleston
Scot Adams, NEGG President
The Council has spent many hours evaluating the financial
structure of the Society in light of the changes that have taken
place regarding expense and revenue sources since separating the
registration, transfer and membership responsibilities from the
Secretary’s position and transferring them to CLRC. In addition to
providing expanded hours, online membership and pedigree information, the CLRC is providing us with a detailed spreadsheet
which allows the Society to specifically identify revenue and expense sources. We found that we were losing money on semen
certificates and barely breaking even on transfers. Taking into
account that information, in addition to evaluating the goals and
responsibilities the Council has to its members to preserve and
promote the breed, a couple of changes in the fee structure were
developed to be implemented starting January 1, 2011. Three
changes will take place:
1. All membership renewals for 2011 are to be submitted
to CLRC and will have the handling fee included. The
Society absorbed the cost of the handing fee charges for
membership renewals and applications in 2010.
2. Transfer fees will increase in 2011 from $10 to $20 for
those applied for within 30 days of the sale and from
$20 to $30 for transfers applied for between 30-60 days
after the sale.
3. Semen certificates fees will increase in 2011 from $1 to
$2 per certificate with a minimum order of 10 certificates.
Examination of our historical records indicates there has been no
increase in our membership, transfer and registration fees within
the last 20 years with the exception of standardizing the bull registration fee in 2005.
The Belted Galloway Society Council is continually working to
get the greatest possible return from the monetary resources it
receives and appreciates your support.
The New England Galloway Group is pleased to announce that
Iris LaRochelle of Sweet Meadow Farm located in Webster, NH
has been selected as the 2011 Heifer Project Youth Recipient.
Iris is one of the seventeen youths that have received a heifer
since the inception of the program in 1998.
Iris is twelve-years-old and a high honors student. She is a 4-H
member and currently has Black Angus cattle, as well as Hampshire sheep. Iris has already achieved having the champion market steer at two of her county fairs in New Hampshire in 2010.
She also was champion 4-H junior fitting and showmanship with
her sheep.
We wish all the best to Iris as she begins training her heifer in
preparation of the 2011 show season. She intends on showing her
heifer at the Fryeburg Youth Show, which takes place at the
Fryeburg Fairgrounds during the 2011 National Belted Galloway
Sale held the weekend of April 28-May 1, 2011. Consignments
for the sale are being accepted through February 1. All consignment information is posted on www.beltie.org or contact Scot
Adams [email protected] or (207)696-3812.
While enjoying the sale and youth show, please stop by and
congratulate Iris on her selection as our 2010 Heifer Project
Youth Recipient.
