CAMPING PARADISE DENMARK –
THE IDEAL HOLIDAY!
Camping is probably
one of the finest
types of holiday but
camping in Denmark is
something quite
special.
Welcome to our
Camping Kingdom!

E
njoy yourself in a country where the atmosphere is informal and relaxed, and where the population
is said to be among the happiest in the world. The quality is unusually high, the waters are crystal
clear, and the beaches are fantastic. In our towns and villages you can experience a delightful mix
of the modern and the traditional. And marvel at the wide choice that our 498 classified campsites offer
you.
Immerse yourself in the Danish way of life!
Whether you travel with a tent, your own mobile accommodation in the form of a caravan or a mobile
home or if you prefer to hire a chalet – in Denmark you will always be made to feel welcome. A widespread network of campsites is there for your convenience. And because distances in Denmark are short,
every site invariably offers you a good base for explorations, either on a comprehensive tour of the region, or for visits to nearby attractions, monuments, museums or other world-renowned places of interest. And it is always rewarding to visit some of the numerous picturesque little fishing-villages that dot
the coastline.
Most campsites are located in the immediate vicinity of the water. And if you are staying at one of the
sites that are a little further away from the water, it is worth knowing that nowhere in Denmark is more
than 55 kilometres from the sea.

CAMPSITES
WITH STAR
QUALITY
The Danish Camping Board
has again in 2007
inspected the 498 campsites. The sites have been
awarded between one and
five stars according to their
facilities and quality.
The more stars, the better
the quality. Six sites passed
all the stringent test
requirements and received
the maximum five stars:
*****
Here is an overview of some of the minimum requirements within each category. High Season is
from around 20th June to 20th August. For full details, see the Classification section on the
Danish Camping Board’s website www.danishcampsites.dk
* The site is inspected daily. A telephone box or emergency telephone is provided, as well as an
information board. There is at least one shower, as well as WCs. Some sites have a kitchen.
** In high season the site is supervised during the day. At all other times, a duty manager is
available on call. There is an information board with general and tourist information. Shopping
facilities must be available within the immediate vicinity of the site. Minimum one shower per 25
pitches, plus minimum one sink for laundry. The kitchen has at least one hotplace/gas ring per 50
pitches and hot water. Minimum 25% of the pitches have electric hook-up points. The site
adjoins a playground with adequate fencing.
*** Sites are under round the clock qualified supervision. The entrance is secured between
23.00hrs. and 07.00hrs by a barrier, a chain or a gate. Brochures and information about the area
are available from the reception. There is a telephone box which is open day and night. Babychanging room, and at least one family bathroom per 100 units, as well as minimum one washing
machine and tumble dryer. Grocery shopping at many sites, or very close by. 70% of the accommodation has electric hook-up points.
Additional facilities
In addition to the specified minimum requirements, many sites in the above categories often offer
additional facilities, such as a swimming pool and reception room with television. There may be a
playground, an area for ball-games, a wash-room with its own entrance for disabled people, a
washing-machine and dryer and a separate tent area. Many campsites have servicing facilities for
mobile-home campers for draining used water and toilet tanks and disposal of normal refuse, in
addition to re-filling water-tanks. Check which facilities are available on which sites on the
Camping Board’s website www.danishcampsites.dk
**** Complexes of this category fulfil the highest requirements of the Camping Board, so far as
facilities, buildings, supervision, etc. are concerned. The reception is open between 08.00hrs. and
22.00hrs. during high season. More than 80% of the pitches have electric hook-up points.
Playgrounds and an area for ball games. Common room with TV.
***** These sites have exceptionally good amenities and activities. The complexes have
a large reception, open from 08.00hrs. to 22.00hrs. in high season, and a large shop with the
same opening times. There are separate washing and lavatory blocks, with soap dispenser and
hairdryers - separate children’s section with child size toilets and wash basins. Family bathrooms
for rent. Indoor dining room close to the kitchen, several playgrounds and lounges incl. a TV lounge. Most pitches have their own electricity supply and a quarter of them are connected to their
own main-drainage and direct water supply.

Camping to let
visitdenmark.com/camping-holiday
Welcome home! Become a D
On our 498 classified campsites,
there are 5018 cosy camping
chalets for your use.
Their facilities vary, from the basic
but practical to the very comfortable, with bath, toilet and TV. Many
sites also have caravans and spacious tents to let. Your advantage!
You can arrive with a minimum of
luggage and save yourself a great
expense. When booking, do ask for
full details of the type of equipment
you can expect to find in your chalet, such as kitchen items, bed linen,
etc. to avoid any surprises on arrival.
The alternative chalet holiday
A holiday in a camping chalet is a holiday of a very special kind – you become, albeit
temporarily, a “house-owner” in Denmark! The distinctiveness of the various chalet
categories simplifies the booking process for you. You can learn everything about the
amenities and size of your desired chalet while still at home, thereby simplifying the
planning of your holiday.
Brief Chalet Index
In all, you have five chalet categories.
Category 1: Chalets with the most basic equipment such as fixed beds and lighting.
Category 2: These camping chalets are sturdily and practically equipped.
Above all, there are heating facilities and often also cooking equipment.
Category 3: The chalets are insulated and equipped with a small kitchen including a
refrigerator, also a garden seating area with furniture.
Category 4: Chalets with above-average insulation and superior kitchen area.
Additionally, there is running water, refrigerator, coffee-machine and a covered patio
with garden furniture. Child beds and high chairs can be rented and bed linen can be
washed on payment of a supplementary charge.
Category 4A: Within Category 4 are a number chalets with a private shower and
WC.
Category 5: These have even better facilities. They are well-insulated and equipped
to the highest standards, 20 to 25 sq.m., with separate bed and living rooms,
a covered patio with lighting, hot water and colour TV.

The Camping Pass.
To spend the night on a Danish campsite, and also for camping chalets, a
valid Camping Pass is needed. The plastic card, which resembles a credit card,
has a magnetic strip where your personal details are recorded. With it you
can quickly and easily book into the
campsite – a pleasant start to the holiday.
Danish “House-owner”!
Category 5A: These top-class chalets have shower, washbasin and WC as basic amenities.
Save in the Low Season
Chalet holidays are very popular and for this reason it is recommended that you book
early if travelling in the peak season, usually from around 20th June to 20th August,
which includes the Danish school holidays. Outside this period things are a little easier,
and it is sometimes possible to turn up at a campsite without having booked ahead.
Prices are also lower outside the peak season, and there are great savings to be had if
you are able to travel at other times.
Caravans and Tents for Hire
On many Danish campsites, you can hire caravans and tents. This is generally cheaper
than hiring a chalet, and of course there is no clear classification of caravans and tents. If
you are tied to specific holiday dates, and wish to ensure that the caravan or tent that
you plan to hire is available, it is advisable to contact your chosen campsite to make a
booking in advance, either by telephone or e-mail. They will be glad to give you the
information. Campsites with 4 and 5 stars, and most sites with 3 stars, should have staff
who understand and speak English.
On production of a valid identity document, such as your passport, you can
purchase this on arrival at the campsite. You can also order it quite conveniently before your holiday on www.
danishcampsites.dk
The Danish Camping Pass costs Dkk 90
(approx. £9) and is valid for a calendar
year, in Denmark, Finland, Norway and
Sweden. Couples, families or individuals with children under 18, sharing the
same home address as their parents,
need only one Camping Pass.

SKAGEN – THE CHURCH BURIED IN SAND
16
GRENEN – DENMARK’S EXTREMITY
The Church of St. Laurentii (St. Lawrence) was probably founded in the second half of the 14th century and was once Skagen’s parish church. Towards the
end of the 18th century, the Church was engulfed
by a drifting sand-dune. The road had to be cleared
with shovels when there was a service. Today, only
the tower portion protrudes as a visible sign.

Can you imagine standing with one leg in the
North Sea and the other in the Baltic? At Grenen
that is in fact perfectly possible and even simple.
For here there is a narrow point on the beach
where the Skagerrak and the Kattegat seas converge. Annually about 110,000 ships sail past
this point.

Tour 4. Funen
Our fourth regional tour through Denmark takes you around the “Fairytale Island” of Funen. The
island acquired that name through its world-famous son, the fairytale writer Hans Christian
Andersen (1805–1878). He himself named the third greatest Danish island the “Garden of
Denmark”. Here you will find a splendid climate with vast woodland landscapes, distant sandy
beaches, fishing ports, old half-timbered towns and 123 castles and manor-houses. More than
30 of these are accessible today, some are even used as hotels. Enjoy the good life on your
tour of the island, and don’t miss the opportunity to purchase fresh vegetables, fruit and meat
straight from the farms.
Funen lies to the east of Jutland, to which the island is connected by two bridges across the

Tour 7. NATURE’S GEMS
In an era where everything seems rushed and ever more frantic, we long for oases of tranquillity.
With its unique nature experiences, Denmark offers plenty of oases. They are, as a rule, conveniently located and easy to reach, yet secluded and remote enough to be a real escape from the
hurly-burly of everyday life. Enjoy the endless expanses of the Danish countryside, the deserted
beaches, ancient woodlands - largely untouched by man since the Ice Age - and, of course, water,
as far as the eye can see. Recharge your batteries in the undisturbed dune landscape, where you
can let your thoughts wander, while watching the sun rise slowly out of the sea - or sink into it.

It is not only the children’s eyes that light up at the
sight of Joboland’s attractions. No one escapes dry
from a buggy ride across a water-land with five
slides. There are also magic shows, mini-golf and
bowling up to a hands-on zoo and nostalgic toys.

Oluf Høst (1884-1966) is valued as one of the
greatest painters on Bornholm. From 1929 until
his death, he lived and worked in his house,

studio are museums – always worth a visit. Also

DUEODDE - FINEST SAND
At the southernmost tip of Bornholm is the beach
of Dueodde, which even for sand-spoilt Bornholm
is something special. Over a time-span of around
a billion years, a sand, so fine that it was earlier
even used as the filling for hour-glasses, has evolved out of granite and grey slate.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR CAMPERS
For further details see
www.visitdenmark.com
and
www.danishcampsites.dk
Getting to Denmark  Taking your car or caravan to Denmark couldn’t be easier. From the UK you can
travel by DFDS Seaways’ overnight ferry from Harwich in Essex to Esbjerg on Jutland’s west coast – check
their website for schedules and fares. www.dfds.co.uk From Esbjerg it is easy to drive to just about anywhere in Denmark.
If you prefer to drive all the way, taking you car across the Channel, you can drive up through Northern
Germany and into Denmark. Once in the country, most destinations can be reached reasonably conveniently by motorway. From the Danish-German border, it is possible to reach the north of Jutland in just a
few hours on the excellent road network, or you can drive across the bridges to the Baltic islands, Funen
and Sealand as far as the capital Copenhagen.
Travelling by Car  Danish roads are generally un-crowded, which makes travelling with a towed caravan or mobile home a very pleasant experience. Remember that traffic drives on the right and, at all times,
it is compulsory to drive with dipped headlights. In urban areas, the maximum speed limit is 50km/h. On
main roads, towed caravans may do 70km/h, on motorways 80km/h. Private cars and mobile homes up
to 3.5 tonnes gross weight may drive at 80km/h on main roads, and at 110/130km/h on motorways.
Anyone caught speeding is liable to be fined on the spot.
The legal blood/alcohol limit is 0.5(50mg/100cl).
Breakdown services are available from well over 130 Falck-Stations (Tel: 0045/70 10 20 30) or by way
of the Danish Autohjælp Union (Danish equivalent of AA) with over 60 depots (Tel: 0045/70 10 80 90).
Police, Ambulance and Fire services are mostly accessible by emergency call 0045/112 (no coins needed).
Check www.visitdenmark.com for more information about driving in Denmark.
Disabled Visitors  In around 290 of all participating Danish campsites, the facilities exceed the equal
access legislation, especially for sanitary arrangements. The West Jutland region is particularly good for disabled tourists with purpose-designed separate offers/camping-sites. www.visithandicapguide.com
Camping  In Denmark, there are 498 classified campsites. Their annual inspection and classification are
made by the Camping Board, a group of representatives of owners and consumer organisations. Danish
campsites are assessed according to a star-rating system. It starts with 1 Star for basic sites and rises to
5 Stars for sites with top-class facilities. The prices of the Danish campsites vary greatly, according to location and the time of the year. For overnight stops, a Camping Pass is required; Camping Card International
(CCI) or Camping Card Scandinavia. The latter can be obtained on application from a Danish campsite for
90 DKK (about £9) or online at www.danishecampsites.dk. The passes are in credit card format and valid for a calendar year. If you have a plastic card from a previous year, you can renew this by buying a stamp.
Cards are issued to individuals or couples, and also cover any children under 18 years of age, living at the
same address as the parents. The card is valid in all the Scandinavian countries.
Camping holidays are not only possible in summer. In Denmark, there are 109 all-year campsites. A further
70 sites also accept guests during the winter but booking must be made in advance. The services and facilities available at the sites during the high season, may be restricted at other times of the year, and may
also depend on the number of guests on the site.
In Denmark it is generally not permitted to camp by the side of the road, in parks, in woods, on a beach or
in car parks. Whether you are staying in a tent, a caravan or a mobile home, you must always look for a
classified campsite. This will not only afford you the highest degree of safety but also all the facilities.
About 160 sites offer, under the logo “Quickstop”, quality parking places for mobile homes from 20.00 hrs
in the evening until 10.00hrs in the morning. Included in the overnight stay for four people, for example,
is the facility to discharge used water and to fill up with fresh water.

DNU – Danish Naturist Union  The Danish Naturist Union presents special naturist camping
places under www.dansknaturistunion.dk. If you are looking exclusively for naturist bathing beaches, you will find them under www.strandguide.dk
Currency  The currency in Denmark is the Krone (plural Kroner). One Krone = 100 øre and is
worth about £0.10. £1 = Dkk 10. VisitDenmark’s website has a useful currency converter, see
www.visitdenmark.com or check with your bank for the latest exchange rates.
A good card; the
Camping Club
Scandinavia, is
obligatory for
Denmark. It can
be acquired at the
first camp-site visited in Denmark, but it
is also valid in Sweden, Norway and
Finland. The Camping Club International
Card is also valid in Denmark.
Passport and Visa  EU citizens do not require a visa for Denmark. British citizens must hold a
valid British passport. For information about passport validity and Visa requirements for other nationalities, please check the Danish Embassy’s website www.denmark.org.uk
Car Documents  You will need your car insurance documents (remember to check that you are
fully ensured to drive abroad), the vehicle registration documents, your full British driver’s licence
incl. both the plastic and paper versions.
Food Import  In Denmark, the EU Regulations apply for import of tea, coffee and groceries for
personal consumption only. www.fvst.dk
Pets  According to EU Regulations, domestic animals must be identifiable either by branding or a
micro-chip. Dogs are welcome on most Danish camping-sites.
Dogs and cats must be inoculated against rabies not less than 30 days, or more than 12 months,
before entry. The international inoculation certificate is valid proof.
Animals which are inoculated once a year do not come within the 30-day rule.
Young animals up to 3 months require a veterinary health certificate (issued up to a maximum of 10
days before). Pitbull terriers and Tosas (Japanese fighting dogs) may not be imported.
www.fvst.dk
Health & EHIC   Anyone visiting Denmark on a temporary basis is entitled to free emergency
treatment at a hospital or an emergency department in the event of sudden illness, an accident or
sudden deterioration of an existing condition. In addition also any woman giving birth, provided the
birth could not reasonably have been foreseen to take place during the woman’s temporary stay in
Denmark. The medical care provided for visitors to Denmark in the event of an emergency does
not extend to the cost of repatriation, should this become necessary, and it is always advisable to
take out a general travel insurance. In all cases it is a precondition that the patient has not travelled
to Denmark with the specific purpose of seeking medical treatment.
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is strongly recommended as it entitles you to free or reduced cost medical treatment if you fall ill while on holiday in Denmark. Apply for the EHIC card online: www.dh.gov.uk; by phone – 0845-606 2030 or by post – forms available at post offices.

The Danish Camping
Board’s Quality
Assessment
When you choose a campsite for your holiday in Denmark, you can be assured that our 498
approved campsites have fulfilled a number of criteria to be awarded their star rating.
Each year, representatives from The Danish Camping Board inspect all the approved sites
and stars are awarded based on the amenities available. In addition, all sites are assessed in
terms of quality of the following three aspects: buildings, grounds and facilities.
The factors assessed within each of the three aspects include quality of maintenance, cleaning, choice of materials as well as good workmanship.
The quality of each campsite is assessed in relation to the quality of other campsites with
the same star rating. In other words, the quality assessment of a 2-star campsite cannot
compared directly with the quality assessment of a 4-star campsite.
A coloured bar chart is used to show the overall quality assessment. The quality of the
buildings is expressed by the height of the blue bar, the quality of the grounds is expressed
by the height of the green bar, and finally the red bar indicates the quality of the facilities.
The higher the coloured bars are, the higher the quality that you can expect at a particular
site. Similarly, the size of the white section indicates what a campsite lacks in quality within
the three aspects. If a campsite scores a 100 per cent marks in the quality assessment,
there will be no white section.
On our website www.danishcampsites.dk you can check the quality assessment of individual sites when you search for suitable campsites.
Camping on approved campsites in Denmark gives you quality assurance.
