The organization announced its most recent campaign earlier this year, asking for nominations to be submitted by Friday, Feb. 19. “The award has developed into one of the highlights of the year for us,” said Chamber member Joanne Gregoire. “It’s a great way to recognize the outstanding volunteer contribution of a local citizen. But it is also a great way to recognize, in general, the importance of volunteer work in our community.” “We’ve had some outstanding recipients of the award in the past, but there are still plenty of worthy candidates out there.” This is the 18th year the award has been staged in Shaunavon. Gregoire says the award is open to all local residents. The winning candidate is selected by an independent and anonymous committee comprised of local residents. Nomination forms and guidelines can be found at the Town of Shaunavon or the Wellness and Leisure office, as well as online under Events at shaunavon.com Gregoire also encouraged those who have submitted nominations on behalf of others - but haven’t won the award - to re-submit their entries. “We are fortunate to receive so many good entries, but the committee can only select one each year,” said Gregoire. “Just because a nominee hasn’t been selected in the past doesn’t mean they aren’t deserving of the award. Our hope is to be able to celebrate every one of our hardworking volunteers.” This year’s award winner will be announced in early March, with the Citizen of the Year Gala Banquet tentatively set for early spring. Last year’s winner was Kathleen East. So the diabetes educator did the good old routine of taking an orange, drawing up insulin, then injecting it into the orange. He then made the patient repeat this practice routine a few times. The patient goes home, etc. He comes back in a week and his blood sugar is out of control. They ask him if he’s been taking his insulin and he goes “of course.” So they decide to ask him to demonstrate how he injects insulin. CBC Radio’s Saskatoon Weekend host Eric Anderson went grocery shopping with Brooke Bulloch, a registered dietitian and owner of Food To Fit in Saskatoon, to figure out how to bring you the best bang for your buck, Here are some tips she shared for having a healthy diet at a lower cost: 1. Avoid food trends “When it comes to shopping healthy on a budget, I think often it really does come down to watching those prices but sometimes not getting wrapped up in the fads and trends of super foods,” said Bulloch. The basics can be just as healthy as foods that are trendy, she said. 2. Eat your basics Health and fitness popularity has exploded in Saskatchewan and that’s making people a lot more interested in what they are fuelling their bodies with, according to Bulloch. ‘The other thing that people might not realize is that if you like berries and you like that exotic fruit, you can get them frozen.’ - Brooke Bulloch, registered dietitian But healthy doesn’t have to mean expensive. Simple groceries like bananas and oranges are just as nutritious as more exotic fruits and vegetables like kale and passion fruit. .... Eat frozen foods Frozen foods shouldn’t be crossed off the list either. “The other thing that people might not realize is that if you like berries and you like that exotic fruit, you can get them frozen,” said Bulloch. 4. Shop with a strategy Shopping with a strategy helps limit the amount of junk that goes in the cart. “Mine is to hit everything on the perimeter first, then I will go down the middle of the aisles,” she said. This limits how many processed foods make it into her shopping cart, because whole foods are typically found on the outside aisles of the store. 5. Stick to your list A lot of unhealthy food purchases are impulse buys, Bulloch also said that’s why it’s so important to stick to your shopping list. One way to make sure you don’t stray from the list is to not shop while hungry. After much convincing from my husband, I finally agreed to call an old family friend to sing her happy birthday. It was only after I finished singing, that the voice at the other end of the line informed me, that it was the wrong number. “Oh I’m sorry” I said, embarrassed. “It’s ok”, the voice said “you can use all of the practice you can get!” Published by The Shaunavon Standard • Phone 306-297-4144 Email: [email protected] Website: www.yourdailyfix.me ....
